Testaverde estaverde Inducted nducted into into College ollege Football ootball HOF
Miami Hurricanes great and 1986 Heisman Trophy winning QB Vinny Testaverde was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame at the 56th NFF Annual Awards Dinner held at the Waldorf Astoria. Testaverde was the seventh Miami Hurricane player and 10th overall to be enshrined into the College Football Hall of Fame. He joins Bennie Blades (2006), Don Bosseler (1990), Andy Gustafson (1985), Jack Harding (1980), Ted Hendricks (1987), Jimmy Johnson (2012), Russell Maryland (2011), Gino Torretta (2009) and Arnold Tucker (2008). Testaverde was one of 14 inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as part of the 2013 class: Ted Brown (NC State), Tedy Bruschi (Arizona), Ron Dayne (Wisconsin), Tommie Frazier (Nebraska), Jerry Gray (Texas), Steve Meilinger (Kentucky), Orlando Pace (Ohio State), Rod Shoate (Oklahoma), Percy Snow (Michigan State), Don Trull (Baylor), Danny Wuerffel (Florida), and coaches Wayne Hardin (Navy, Temple) and Bill McCartney (Colorado). One of the greatest quarterbacks in school history, Testaverde was Miami’s first Heisman Trophy winner in 1986, while also winning the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, Maxwell Award and Davey O’Brien Trophy. He led the Hurricanes to three bowl berths, including the 1987 Fiesta Bowl, which determined the national champion. Testaverde, who was a redshirt on Miami’s 1983 national championship team, went 23-3 as a starter playing for legendary coaches Howard Schnellenberger and Hall of Famer Jimmy Johnson. Tampa Bay selected Testaverde as the No. 1 overall selection in the 1987 NFL Draft, and his pro career spanned 21 seasons with seven different teams. The 1998 All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowl selection finished his NFL career seventh all-time in passing yards (46,233) and eighth in touchdowns (275). The Elmont, N.Y., native currently resides in Florida where he plays an active role with the Children’s Cancer Center of Tampa. Testaverde remains among only four Hurricanes to have their jerseys retired at Miami.

Flinn Named All-ACC Miami Hurricanes junior striker Ashley Flinn was among those recognized with all-conference honors, earning a spot on the All-ACC Third Team. The Romeo, Mich., native had a breakout campaign for the Hurricanes, leading the team and ranking seventh in the ACC with 10 goals in the regular season. Flinn recorded four multi-goal performances on the year, including the first hat trick for a Hurricane since 2009 with a three-goal game against Cleveland State. “Coming into the season before we started we asked the team what their goals were,” first-year head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. “The team said they didn’t score a lot of goals last year. My job is to help them score. Ashley and a few other players really took it to heart, and listened to the details in regards to improving.” Flinn’s goals often came at the most opportune moments, including a second-half brace that guided Miami to a 2-0 upset of then-No. 3 Notre Dame. She
ranked second on the team in shots on goal (21), and netted a team-high five game-winners on the year. Timely strikes included a golden goal in overtime against Jacksonville and a decisive strike with 40 seconds remaining in regulation against FAU. “Ashley is determined. She wants to help the team succeed,” Monroe said. “It started to click, and she came up with big-time goals, especially in the beginning of the year. I think she improved as the year went on, and was really able to find success.” Flinn is the first All-ACC honoree since Kate Howarth took home second-team honors in 2011. She led the team with 20 points, marking a new career high and the most for a Hurricane since Howarth registered 29 points during her prolific junior campaign.

MORE ABOUT @CANESFUTBOL *Junior striker Ashley Flinn picked up the first All-ACC honors for a Hurricane since Kate Howarth was named second-team All-ACC in 2011. * Sophomore Jasmine Paterson had an impressive season, ranking second on the team in nearly every offensive category: goals (four), assists (three) and points (11). *Miami figures look to improve in Mary-Frances Monroe’s second season at the helm in 2014, losing just two graduating seniors in Tara Schwitter and Blake Stockton.

The 2013 Russell Athletic Bowl pits two programs built by legendary college football coach Howard Schnellenberger. Coach Schnellenberger is credited with laying the foundation for one of the greatest dynasties in college football history, the University of Miami Hurricanes. Schnellenberger coached the Hurricanes for five seasons (1979-83), posting a 41-16 record and his tenure culminated with the 1983 National Championship – the first of five Miami national titles. Two years later, Schnellenberger took over at Louisville, where he’d spend 10 seasons with the Cardinals (1985-94). He finished 54-56-2 with two bowl wins.

16 Student-Athletes Graduate in December
Sixteen University of Miami student-athletes earned their bachelor’s degrees Thursday during Fall Commencement ceremonies at BankUnited Center. Thirteen of the 16 graduates were football players – Malcolm Bunche, Eduardo Clements, Akil Craig, Shayon Green, Allen Hurns, Alex Irastorza, Paul Kelly, Brandon Linder, Sean McNally, Stephen Morris, Clive Walford and Ryan Williams. Green walked during the May 2013 Commencement exercises. Also graduating Thursday was Billy Sanders, who was a reserve tight end in 2010 and 2011. After a 9-3 season, the Hurricanes will play Louisville in the 2013 Russell Athletic Bowl on Dec. 28 (6:45 p.m., ESPN) in Orlando. Also graduating Thursday were soccer’s Jordan Roseboro and baseball’s Alex San Juan and Michael Broad. Roseboro was a four-year letterwinner for the Canes from 2009-12 and finished with six career goals. “Graduation Day is a celebration for not only our student-athletes and their families but for our whole community that has watched our Hurricanes give their very best effort in school and in their sport,” said David Wyman, Associate AD for Academic Services. San Juan played two years for Jim Morris’ team (2012-13), finishing his career with a .264 batting average, one home run and 18 RBI in 64 games. Broad spent four seasons in the outfield for the Canes, playing in 178 games and making 147 starts. Broad hit .273 with 15 home runs and 94 RBI. “Today we honor them for their commitment and contributions they made to our tremendous university and join them in celebrating their academic success,” Wyman said. UTrack Sets Records in 2013 The University of Miami track and field and cross country programs have a lot of success in their history and 2013 was no different. The Canes had 13 different student-athletes qualify for the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary Championships. Miami had entrants in six events on both the men’s and women’s side. All-American triple jumper Samantha Williams and thrower Amber Monroe qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary for the second consecutive year, while Alyssa McClure (100m), Alaine Tate (800m), Taneisha Cordell (800m) and Lea Johnson (hammer) made their NCAA East Preliminary debuts. The women’s 4x100 relay team of McClure, Jokira Jiles, Jasmyne King and Kelsey Balkwill also qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary. The men’s team had four student-athletes compete in six events. Thrower Isaiah Simmons and hurdler Christian Cook qualified for two events each, while Timothy Richardson and John-Patrick Friday qualified for one a piece. The four male studentathletes, who all qualified for the first time in their careers, were the most the Hurricanes have had qualify for an NCAA Regional in program history. While Miami set school records for studentathletes reaching the NCAAs, several track standouts set individual records during 2013. Simmons was the first Cane to break a record in 2013, shattering Vince Wilfork’s indoor shotput record with a mark of 18.17m. In the outdoor season, Simmons also broke Miami’s shotput (18.89m), discus (54.51m) and hammer (51.46m) records. Arguably the most successful Hurricane in 2013, he was also crowned the ACC indoor and outdoor champion in shotput. The men also broke the indoor distance medley record when Luke Fontaine, Christian Cook, Douglas Dourado and Greg Kaczka turned in a time of 10:.02.83. Kaczka also set a new indoor mile record (4:10.98)and an outdoor 1,500m record (3:50.51). 21

Distance runner Sean Pezzulo set the men’s outdoor 5,000m record early in 2013 (14:42.32) and broke Miami’s 10K record in his final cross country race of the year, the NCAA South Regional (31:29.61). On the women’s side, Cordell set the indoor 600m record (1:31.61), while Tate turned in the top indoor 800m time in program history (2:06.09). Freshman Dakota Dailey-Harris was also impressive in 2013, turning in the second-best high jump mark in school history (1.78m) and placing fifth at the U.S. Junior Championships. Miami’s cross country teams closed out the 2013 running season with impressive performances. Lindsi Arrington carried the women all season with excellent performances. Arrington turned in the second-best 5K (17:36.23) and 6K (21;15.53) times in school history. On the men’s side, the Canes saw four runners peak at the NCAA South Regional and turn in Top 10 times in school history. Pezzulo’s record-breaking time of 31:29.61 led the quartet, while Fontaine’s time of 31:51.46 ranks fourth in program history. JaCee Jarnagin (32:10.59, 7th) and Jonas Frenzel (32:20.96, 10th) also turned in Top 10 times in their final collegiate cross country meet. While 2013 was a good year for Miami’s track & field and cross country programs, 2014 looks even better. Miami added Shannon Hatchett, Jerel Langley and Devin West as assistant coaches in the summer of 2013. They join associate head coach Cory Young and assistant coach Damon Griffiths on Deem’s staff. The Canes also brought in seven talented newcomers in Courtney Kennedy, Anthonia Moore, Precious Ogunleye, Shakima Wimbley, Carlos Mangum, Daniel Polinski and Gian Ragonesi. They all are expected to be contributors in 2014 and beyond.

2014 HOME TRACK MEETS After a challenging indoor schedule, Miami opens its 2014 outdoor season with the first of three home meets, hosting the Hurricane Invitational from on March 21-22. They will also host the Miami Invitational on March 29 and the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April 12. “It is always great to compete in front of our home crowd,” Miami director of track and field and cross country Amy Deem said. “Having three home meets gives us an opportunity to showcase not only our team, but also bring quality track and field meets to the university campus and South Florida community.”

I started playing basketball at the end of my junior year of high school. I never really liked sports. The high school coach came in at lunch and asked me to try out so I gave it a try. At first it wasn’t fun until I started realizing I was good at it. Then I started thinking about my future with basketball. I just kept on playing. Hopefully I will make money one day, be a professional in the NBA or overseas. I choose Miami … for one it is Miami. As I was being recruited, Coach L made me feel like I was a part of the family. I felt like there was a good connection. Coach L was a big part of the reason I came here. As he was recruiting me, it was more school-wise because he already knew I could play. He was making sure I went to class, doing well on tests, getting my homework finished. I felt like he cared more about me than the basketball side of it. I like the way Miami plays and the way Coach L coaches. He helps the big guys get touches on the ball. The coaches have helped me understand the game of basketball more. It’s more mental from a Division I standpoint. They help me understand plays and what I need to do, like pick and pop. They have been teaching me about that. Division I is more physical, there’s more pick and pop and screen. JuCo is just freelance. It’s more physical here. My teammates let me know you can’t be soft, and you have to go hard every time. I was raised in Ann Arbor, Mich. My older brother played football, but I really didn’t like sports, so I stayed at home went to his football games sometimes. I grew up being the average kid, going to school and trying to have fun. Seeing my success through sports, with basketball especially, has made me like basketball more. I am starting to understand other sports. I really love basketball now. My family is my biggest support system now. I have cousins that play basketball and my mom played basketball. They really support me, tell me to keep my head up, keep pushing, don’t give up, and I really love them for that. All of them live in Michigan. I am trying to get my dad on an airplane. I didn’t like planes, but I like them now. But before I got on my first one I was pretty scared. My fear was crashing (laughs). I’ll never forget the first try out I had for basketball at 5 o’clock in the morning. It was my junior year. When the coach told me to tryout, I thought it was going to be in the afternoon, after school, but when he said 5 o’clock in the morning, I hesitated to even try it. My mom told me to just try it so because it was something to do. I went and made the team. I’m happy I went. I woke up at 3:50 a.m., to walk to school so I could be awake to try out. Becoming a man was a process, knowing about school and knowing that I needed school more than basketball. That changed by attitude, my personality. Basketball helped me become a more mature person. The best part of my game is pick and pop. I like to shoot now. I have to lean more towards going to the basket. I can’t shoot all the shots, but also screen and roll and play defense. I’m a bigger and faster guy. I’m a forward, and defense is a big key now. I love jumping. I have learned responsibilities of not just basketball but with school. You have to go to class, get homework done, and study. I learned a lot with school and being a more responsible person. Right now the degree means more than anything else because I have two years left. I have to make sure I have all my homework done and go to class. It’s more important than worrying about basketball all day. Coach L and I have a great relationship. When I’m doing something wrong in practice, he will call me over and let me know. We talk about anything. He tries to look after us as much as he can. He makes sure we are doing all right, in school and in basketball, makes sure we are eating right. Coach Konkol also checks in with me every other day about classes - am I going to classes? Am I learning? Stuff like that. He makes sure I am doing all right. My name is James Kelly and I am a Miami Hurricane.

SCHEDULE/RESULTS (19-12)
Canes Shine Under Gandara The first season in the Jose “Keno” Gandara era was a successful one as the University of Miami volleyball program made its fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Gandara, who took over the volleyball program in March 2013, earned his first win as a NCAA head coach on Aug. 30, when Miami defeated Austin Peay, 3-1. Gandara collected his first home win when Miami beat LSU in five sets on Sept. 14. The firstyear head coach tallied his first ACC win when the Canes defeated Boston College in five sets on Sept. 28. Gandara also guided the Canes to their first NCAA Tournament appearance under his tutelage. The Hurricanes dropped their first round match against Oregon in three sets, but 2013 was still a successful first season under Gandara. Miami had four players earn All-ACC distinction, including Savanah Leaf and Emani Sims (first team), Alexis Mourning (second team) and Ryan Shaffer (third team). The Canes defeated No. 12 North Carolina at home and earned one of the coveted 64 spots in the NCAA Tournament. Leaf was Miami’s top attacker, leading the Canes with 442 kills. She was also dangerous with her serve, notching a team-high 38 service aces. The junior ranked third in the ACC and 59th nationally with 3.81 kills/set. She tallied double-digit kills in 24 matches, including a career-high 25 in ther win over No. 12 North Carolina (Nov. 3). Sims and Mourning combined to be two of the top middle blockers in the ACC. Sims led Miami with 153 total blocks, ranking third in the ACC. Her 1.32 blocks/set ranked fourth in the ACC, while her hitting percentage of .345 ranks fifth-best in the ACC. Not far behind Sims is Mourning, who ranked sixth in the ACC and second on the team with a .344 hitting percentage. She also set the Miami single-match record for total blocks with 17 in the victory over Boston College (Sept. 28). Shaffer anchored Miami’s back row defense all season and became the school’s all-time digs leader. Entering the season with 1,562 digs, Shaffer passed 25
HURRICANESPORTS MAGAZINE
Jamie Grass (1,621), Lane Carico (1,715) Cassie Loessberg (2,008) and ranks first in school history with 2,120 digs. Fellow senior Alex Johnson also made history this season. The captain became the second player in Miami history to collect over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career, joinign two-time AVCA All-American Lane Carico. Miami’s right side hitter ended her career all over the school’s record book and with the distinction of starting all 125 matches in her collegiate career. Setters Blair Fuentez and Caitilin Donahoe helped pace a potent Miami attack. Fuentez led the Canes with 864 assists and ranked fourth in the ACC with 9.93 assists/set. She was also an asset with her serve, registering 26 aces over 87 sets played. Donahoe had 64 assists in a victory over Long Beach State early this season and closed out the regular season with a 50-assist game in Miami’s win over Clemson. Misty Ma’a rounded out Miami’s starting lineup, contributing in several aspects as an outside hitter. The sophomore finished the season strong, recording nine or more kills in five of the final eight matches. While Miami will have to replace seniors Johnson, Shaffer and Julia Giampaolo, the Canes will bring back a lot of talent in 2014. All-ACC selections Sims, Leaf and Mourning, as well as Ma’a, Fuentez and Donahoe, will be key components of next year’s team. Factor in reserves Kelsie Groot, Lauren HowardChavez and Eryn Croft and you have nine players who are familiar with Gandara’s system. Sprinkle in a talented recruiting class that includes Georgia Player of the Year Haley Templeton, All-Dade selections Sylvia Hernandez and Brooke McDermott and Houston standout Sakile Simmons, and Gandara’s experience and you have the recipe for another successful season in Coral Gables.

WELCOME BACK TO THE U
New Beginnings for URowing The University of Miami rowing program brought back former assistant coach Dave Sanderson to head up a program that placed fourth at the 2013 ACC Championships. Sanderson, who was an assistant coach at Miami under Debra Morgan in 2006, returned to Coral Gables in August after leading Barry University to four straight NCAA Division II Championships from 2010-13 and the 2013 Sunshine State Conference team championship. Under his guidance, the Hurricanes have already begun to flourish. Miami made the most of its lone fall regatta, turning in a strong showing at the Head of the Hooch. The Canes were highly competitive on the Tennessee River, winning two races and earning four Top 10 finishes in what was a successful weekend in Chattanooga. “All the crews raced hard and with lots of poise,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said.. “It was great to see all their hard work in practice pay off in the races.” The 2013 Head of the Hooch was an excellent way to end the 2013 year and open the Sanderson Era. The Hurricanes placed fourth in the conference with 27 points, up two spots from 2012, thanks to strong performances from the two Varsity 8+ crews. Other highlights from the 2013 championship season include Miami’s victory at the 2013 San Diego Crew Classic. The Canes took home the Cal Cup after placing first in a highly competitive Grand Final race. Miami’s Varsity 8+ entered the Cal Cup Grand Final as the top seed, but it was the University of San Diego who opened the race in front. The Toreros, who were racing on their home course, led by as much as a full boat length during the first 1000m. But the Canes surprised the Toreros at the 1000m mark with a move that ended with Miami 29

taking over the lead with close to 500m to go. Miami’s late charge led to a Hurricane win by a boat length over San Diego, with the University of British Columbia following in third position. A pair of rowers earned All-ACC honors following the 2013 championship season. Senior Katalin Horvath and then junior Breanna Hayton earned All-conference honors after helping guide the Hurricanes to the best season in program history. It was Horvath’s third All-ACC selection and Hayton’s second. Horvath and Hayton also earned CRCA South All-Region honors. Beyond the water, Miami saw several of its student-athletes earn recognition for their success in the classroom. Four members of the University of Miami rowing program were named National ScholarAthletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. Hayton, Hannah Hawks, Hannah Meister and Nichole Zayan were among 401 Division I rowers honored by the CRCA as National ScholarAthletes. Honorees maintained a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and participated in at least 75% of races at the varsity level (1V, 2V, 4V). Five Miami rowers were named to the 37-member All-ACC Academic Team. Senior Katie Stanzilis was joined by Hawks, Hayton, Horvath and Zayan as Hurricanes honored by the conference for their athletic and academic achievements. To be nominated for the All-ACC Academic Team, student-athletes must have recorded a minimum of a 3.0 GPA in the winter semester and have maintained a 3.0 career GPA at their respective schools. While 2013 was a productive year for Miami rowing, the Hurricanes are looking to be even better in 2014. In January, Miami will focus on training for the spring season set to begin with a scrimmage against Michigan on March 8. DECEMBER 20, 2013
Miami head rowing coach Dave Sanderson is in his first year at the helm of Canes rowing, but it is not his first stint in Coral Gables. Sanderson spent a year as an assistant coach at Miami under Debra Morgan in 2006. Assistant Taurii Coyne also is a familiar face to URowing. Coyne is a 2007 graduate of the University of Miami and was a volunteer coach for the Canes in 2006-07 and 2009.
SAN DIEGO SUCCESS The Hurricanes will travel to California to compete in the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic in early April. Miami’s 1V8+ won the Cal Cup at the 2013 San Diego Crew Classic. After their victory in the Cal Cup race a year ago, Miami will compete for the Jessop-Whittier Cup in 2014. Miami’s 2V8+ will look to bring home the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy.
READING, WRITING & ROWING The Hurricanes excel on the water and in the classroom. A year ago, Miami had five studentathletes earn All-ACC Academic honors and four rowers were selected as CRCA National ScholarAthletes. The Canes bring back 22 rowers from a program that placed fourth at the ACC Championships a year ago, including CRCA National ScholarAthletes Breanna Hayton and Hannah Meister. Hayton, who was also a 2013 All-ACC Academic selection, helped the Canes take first place in the Championship 8+ race at Head of the Hooch, while Meister was a member of the winning crew in the Women’s Open 8+ in Chattanooga.
@CanesVB Earns Four Nods on All-ACC Team
Four Miami Hurricanes were named to the All-ACC Volleyball Team Wednesday, the conference office announced. Junior outside hitter Savanah Leaf and junior middle blocker Emani Sims earned first-team honors, while junior middle blocker Alexis Mourning (second team) and senior libero Ryan Shaffer (third team) were also recognized. Sims, Mourning and Shaffer pulled in their second career all-conference recognition, while it was the career-first for Leaf. Miami’s four all-conference selections were tied with Florida State for second-most in the league and just one behind Duke, which led all schools with five honorees. Sims leads the team with 134 blocks this season, averaging a team-high 1.32 blocks per set. Her hitting percentage of .341 ranks fourth-best in the ACC, while her blocks-per-set average of 1.32 ranks third-best in the conference. Leaf has enjoyed another impressive season for the Hurricanes, ranking third in the conference in kills-per-set (3.83) and leading the team with 433 kills. The San Anselmo, Calif., native also ranks sixth in the conference in service aces-per-set (0.34) and second in points-per-set (4.55). Not far behind Sims is Mourning, who ranked sixth in the ACC and second on the team with a .338 hitting percentage. Shaffer averages the second-most digs of any player in the conference at 4.79, and leads the team with 542 digs. She is also Miami’s all-time digs leader with 2,104 digs in her career.

Golfweek: Rizzo puts Miami back on the map In case you missed it in an earlier HurricaneSports Magazine, head coach Patti Rizzo and @ HurricanesGolf were featured on Golfweek.com after posting one of the program’s best fall seasons.
By Beth Ann Baldry Golfweek.com From 1970 to 1984, the University of Miami women’s golf team won five national championships. The players on Patti Rizzo’s current squad weren’t even born when the Hurricanes experienced their heyday. Miami’s last NCAA Championship appearance: 1992. For Rizzo, 53, to get players to buy into the rebuilding process, she had to sell herself. With a ranking that had plummeted out of the top 100 and the program having no recent reputation of winning, Rizzo pulled out her LPGA card and went to work. “I know what it feels like to stand over a putt and have to make it to win a tournament and $250,000 if it goes in,” said Rizzo, a four-time winner on the LPGA and the 1982 Rookie of the Year. Now in her fourth year at the helm in Coral Gables, Rizzo has her alma mater ranked 39th in the country, a substantial improvement over recent

years. Miami’s low points came in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons, when the Hurricanes finished 117th and 116th, respectively, in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings. “It’s kind of like they let golf fall off the map,” Rizzo said. While at Miami, Rizzo was a standout amateur, winning the World Amateur, Trans National, Eastern Am and Mexican Am titles in 1980. She earned victories at the North & South Amateur, South Atlantic Amateur and Harder Hall in ’81. She also nearly captured the LPGA’s Florida Lady Citrus in Orlando as an amateur, losing in a five-person playoff. Rizzo played a 40-tournament schedule in her prime, competing on the LPGA as well as in Europe and Japan. In 1989, she was ranked ninth in the world. A victory in Japan led to a one-year exemption to play the JLPGA full time. Rizzo got an apartment in Tokyo and became the tour’s “Unofficial Money Queen,” leading the circuit in earnings, although the money title wasn’t officially recognized because she hadn’t gone through JLPGA Q-School. Cousineau Named Wendy Wyland Award Recipient
USA Diving announced University of Miami redshirt junior diver Cheyenne Cousineau the recipient of the 2013 Wendy Wyland Award Monday. The award is presented annually in the memory of 1984 Olympic bronze medalist Wendy Wyland, and recognizes a diver who represents a love for the sport, is an extremely hard worker, an exceptional competitor, has courage in dealing with adversity, a rare determination and tenacity to come back from injury or illness, a “never quit” attitude, has respect for fellow competitors and performs beyond expectations. “I’m extremely honored and blessed to receive this award,” Cousineau said. “To be thought of as demonstrating the qualities that the award entails by my peers and the leaders in USA Diving is an incredible feeling, and something that I’ll cherish forever.” Cousineau developed a blood clot in her brain that caused a stroke and seizure during the summer before her freshman year at Ohio State University. A day after her 19th birthday, she was told she would never dive again. Now 22, Cousineau has returned to diving and has established herself as one of the best in the country. After redshirting her first year with the Buckeyes, Cousineau overcame the odds to win the 2012 Big Ten Championship in the platform event, and earned All-America recognition at the 2013 NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships this past spring in Indianapolis. She represented Team USA in synchronized 10-meter at the 2013 FINA World Championships, and won the national title on that event in August. “After being told I would never dive again, and making the world team three years later, is just icing on the cake,” Cousineau said. “God gave me a second chance at life, and to be able to honor Him through my sport is all that I’m striving for. It means so much to know that I’m making a difference in the sport of diving.” She decided to transfer to Miami and team up with head coach Randy Ableman for her final two seasons of collegiate eligibility this summer. “To come back from that and do what she’s done, when they told her she would never dive again, I got a little misty when I heard her full story,” Ableman said. “She is an extremely hard worker, and it’s just great for our team to have someone like Cheyenne join us here.” Despite her once bleak prognosis, Cousineau is now training for the 2016 Olympic games and a chance to compete for Team USA in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. “She brings so much positive energy. I’m very thankful that she chose Miami and really looking forward to her future,” Ableman said. “She’s a very hard worker, a super nice girl and was a major find for us to come to the University of Miami.” 34

B-Rad Named Preseason AA Miami Hurricanes junior lefthander Bryan Radziewski was among those recognized with preseason AllAmerica recognition from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). Radziewski earned one of five starting pitcher nods on the preseason All-America second team from the NCBWA. A 2013 All-ACC first-team selection, Radziewski helped anchor the Miami pitching staff with a dominant redshirt sophomore season. The Miami, Fla., native finished the year with a team-high nine wins and a miniscule 1.78 ERA, striking out a career-high 109 batters in 91.0 innings. He ranked among the best in the ACC in a number of pitching categories, including ERA (1.78, third), opposing batting average (.175, first), wins (nine, ninth), strikeouts (109, fourth), shutouts (two, second) and complete games (two, third).
Baseball Looks Ahead The annual Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft has hardly been kind to the Miami Hurricanes in recent years. In 2012 alone, three of the first 14 selections were Hurricane commits – including the No. 1 overall draftee. Another three players signed contracts after being selected in the top three rounds, leaving Miami without its top six signees. Now in his 21st season at the helm in Coral Gables, head coach Jim Morris and his staff caught a wellearned break this summer. Four of Miami’s freshmen decided to bypass the chance at professional baseball in favor of the Orange & Green after being selected in the 2013 MLB Draft: outfielder Willie Abreu, catcher Zack Collins, righthander Derik Beauprez and outfielder Jacob Heyward. Aided by those decisions, the Hurricanes landed the highest-rated recruiting class in recent memory, hauling in the No. 2 ranking from Perfect Game, No. 4 from Collegiate Baseball and No. 6 from Baseball America.
“The fact is Gino [DiMare] and J.D. [Arteaga] worked very hard on this class,” Morris said. “Gino coming back as our recruiting coordinator has had a big impact. Having such a high ranking correlates to having a good team in the spring, and I’m excited about this group of guys.” The baseball team checked in at No. 13 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper annual preseason poll, marking the team’s best preseason ranking from the publication since 2010. Miami will return its entire starting rotation in 2014, including Louisville Slugger All-American lefthander Bryan Radziewski and USA Baseball Collegiate National Team member Chris Diaz. The duo combined to make 30 starts this past season, and both finished among the top three in the ACC in earned run average.
His 16-strikeout, complete-game shutout of Virginia Tech, a performance which earned him ACC Pitcher of the Week honors, was among the most dominant performances by any starting pitcher all season. For his outstanding campaign, the southpaw was recognized with 2013 All-America honors from Louisville Slugger (second team), Rawlings (third team) and CollegeBaseballInsider.com (honorable mention), as well as a spot on the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list and the ABCA 2013 All-Atlantic Region first team.
Lowell to Speak at Banquet Former World Series MVP and four-time Major League Baseball All-Star Mike Lowell will be the keynote speaker at the 2014 First Pitch Baseball Banquet, head coach Jim Morris announced. Lowell, who graduated from nearby Coral Gables Senior High with a perfect 4.0 GPA, was selected by the New York Yankees in the 20th round of the 1995 Major League Baseball Draft after a stellar four-year college career. He went on to win three World Series championships – one with the Yankees in 1998, another with the Marlins in 2003, and his final one with Boston in 2007.
NEWS AND NOTES | AROUND THE LIGHT ***Much has been made of the Hurricanes returning all three weekend starters from last season’s staff, which combined for a 3.38 ERA. Baseball America profiled lefty Andrew Suarez in its first top 100 college player rankings of the season.

Caprice Dennis’ family continues to expand with UM women’s basketball team Michelle Kaufman Miami Herald
Caprice Dennis was just 15, but she knew it was time to make a brutally difficult grown-up decision. It was time to leave home. She had just finished her freshman year at Detroit Pershing High School, and craved more stability and rules than she was getting at home. Her mother, Gwendolyn Gray, was raising her alone and loved her dearly, but was having trouble getting her to school and staying on top of things. Dennis’ grades were slipping, and she wasn’t spending enough time in the gym. Seeking more discipline, and a father figure, Dennis reached out to her coach, Shawn Hill. The coach and his wife, Kenya, had nine children of their own, but offered to take Dennis in, so long as she didn’t mind doing chores, and sharing a bathroom and a bedroom. Dennis wasn’t sure how her mother would react, and was thrilled when Gray gave her blessing. So, the young teen packed her bags and inherited siblings India, Nijzah (a Pershing teammate), Shawn Jr., Brittany, Ron, Paire, Kenya, Tharren, and Paris. They piled into three bedrooms and a basement equipped with three sets of bunk beds. They shared one bathroom. Kenya Hill, who worked at the Doubletree Hotel, used her hospitality skills to run her house. There were strict schedules for showers, brushing teeth and breakfast. Everyone was out of the house by 6:30a.m. At night, all nine kids did homework and the older ones helped the younger ones. “The decision was harder for my mom than me, but she realized it was best for me, and I’ve gotten so far based on that decision,” Dennis said. “I really appreciate her letting me go. No knock to my mom, but I just hadn’t had anyone to discipline me or force me to get good grades. It was always like, ‘It’s OK, you’ll do better next time.’ When I moved in with Coach Hill, it was like, ‘No, you’re going to do this or you’re not going to play basketball.’” A short time later, another teammate, Monique Howard, also moved in, making it 11 kids in the house. Dennis considers the Hills as surrogate parents. “I call my high school coach Dad. He said, ‘I’m going to treat you as if you’re one of my children and my children don’t come home with less than 3.5 [GPA].’” Dennis’ grade point average leaped from 2.0 to 3.3. She became more focused, polished her game, and by the time she was a junior, she was averaging 26 points per game and being recruited by more than a dozen top programs, including Michigan, Michigan State, Kentucky, Kansas, Miami and Texas. She initially committed to Kansas, but then decided to explore more options. She visited UM and fell in love. She especially enjoyed the camaraderie she witnessed during a team dinner at coach Katie Meier’s house and a conversation with Meier over breakfast the next day. “I loved the atmosphere,” Dennis said. “We had a team dinner at Katie’s house and it was amazing. There were games everywhere, everyone was interacting and smiling. I could just see the team chemistry is what I wanted. I came from a team that was like family, so I wanted that. On the final day, I sat down at breakfast with Katie and it was amazing. It was about how I fit in, how she runs her program, how enthusiastic she is, how she breaks down every little stat. I love that. I immediately knew I wanted to play for her.” Meier was equally impressed with Dennis. She asked the recruit for her impressions of the practice she watched, and Meier was “stunned” with the high-level observations she made. “She’s so complex, and that’s a compliment,” Meier said. “She’s got a great mind. She’s got a lot of levels in how she thinks through decisions, a lot of depth, and it shows on the basketball court. She can think very quickly and solve problems. “She’s got a lot of toughness and a private area you just can’t get to. It’s highly motivating for me to try and figure out what she needs from me. She never asks for anything. She’s a survivor, feels like she can handle things on her own. She’s a very independent young lady, very interesting person.” The 5-9 sophomore is having a breakout season, leading the Hurricanes (5-3) with an average of 19.6 points per game. She spent her freshman year adjusting to the rigors of the college game, and said it was frustrating at times. She came in at 120 pounds, had never lifted weights, and she now weighs 135 and is much stronger. She remembers taking a charge and being pancaked by a 180-pound opponent. “Caprice showed flashes of what she could do last year, but she had no stamina, no strength,” Meier said. “It was a big adjustment. This year, totally different. She’s a gamer. When the lights go on, you’re like, ‘Oh my God.’ She’s courageous, confident and crafty. Sky’s the limit.”

@MiamiWBB Visits Sylvester Cancer Center CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The University of Miami women’s basketball team visited the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center on Wednesday. Head coach Katie Meier along with nine players and assistant coaches packed on the Metrorail outside the BankUnited Center and headed to the health district. “Today was an amazingly special experience for our team and our staff,” Meier said. “It’s a great opportunity to share our blessings and meet wonderful people who are showing such courage.” Upon arrival, the team entered Alex’s Place, the center for treatment of children. The players signed posters, exchanged telling jokes and played on a Nerf basketball goal. “This was an extraordinary and humbling experience,” senior co-captain Maria Brown said. “We were welcomed with smiles and warm spirits! This was an opportunity that I was very grateful to be a part of! Following the stint in Alex’s Place, the team went upstairs to the in-patient unit and took photos, visited with patients and signed more autographs. “As the holiday season approaches, we just all try to get a little bit more humble and a lot more grateful for the blessings that we have in our lives,” Meier added.

HurricaneSports.com: Even witHurricaneSports.com: Even with your busy schedule as a professional football player in the NFL, do you still follow the Hurricanes on Saturdays? Harland Gunn: I try to. I try to find out the score, and find out how they are doing. I do keep up with them. HurricaneSports.com: What did you think of the team’s win over the Gators? Harland Gunn: That was awesome. I wish I could have been there to see it in person. To see it in the news, I was very proud of them. HurricaneSports.com: Are there former Hurricanes teammates that you are still close with and speak with regularly? Harland Gunn: Not on a regular basis, just because all our schedules vary. But if I see one of my friends at the game, we’ll also text each other then. Nothing too consistent. HurricaneSports.com: On the Falcons, you’re teamed up another ProCane, Matt Bosher, what’s that like? Harland Gunn: It’s awesome. Bosher is great. He’s a great guy, and every time we see each other and acknowledge each other. We talk a lot about the Hurricanes. But I always have somebody to reminisce with, which is always good. HurricaneSports.com: What does #NFLU mean to you? Harland Gunn: It helped me realize that I was a part of something greater. There is a high standard, and it motivated me as an individual player. Realizing that the standard is high changed my approach coming in and going to work everyday. HurricaneSports.com: How do you think being a Miami Hurricane has prepared you for life in the NFL? Harland Gunn: The structure of the meetings, the style of offense, and the workload prepared me pretty well. The. How everything was structured helped me the most. I also had class, so I had to learn how to manage my time and take care of my work as soon as I got it. When I was there, we had three different offensive coordinators. I learned a lot mentally, and physically from the practices. A lot has felt the same based off my experiences at Miami. HurricaneSports.com: Do you have any favorite memories from your time as a Hurricane? If so, which/what are they? Harland Gunn: On Friday, before games, we would all go in the ice tubs. All of us would get in there, and there’s tension before the game, but it was cool because you were with all of your friends.

Williams Takes Silver at World Cup Race
Former University of Miami track star and Olympic gold medalist Lauryn Williams continues her quest to compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics. Williams, who was named to the U.S. bobsled national team in October, earned a silver medal along with her teammate Elana Meyers at this past weekend’s World Cup event in Lake Placid, N.Y. Williams and Meyers’ time of 1:53.78 was the fastest of any American sled at the World Cup. The duo finished just behind Canadians Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse, whose time of 1:53.66 secured the gold medal. Prior to the World Cup race in Lake Placid, Williams announced a partnership with UHealth Sports Medicine. Through the partnership, Williams will receive support from the exemplary medical team at UHealth Sports Medicine, led by Lee Kaplan, M.D., associate professor of orthopaedics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The three-time track and field Olympian won a gold medal in the 2012 Olympics as part of the U.S. 4x100m relay team and took home a silver medal in the 100m at the 2004 Olympics. Williams is also a three-time gold medalist at the World Championships and won the NCAA Championship in the 100m in 2004. A nine-time All-American at Miami, Williams has gotten off to a strong start in her bobsled career. She earned her first bobsled medal, a silver, on Dec. 7 at the World Cup race in Park City, Utah and claimed her second silver on Dec. 14. Williams is scheduled to compete again on Jan. 5 in Winterberg, Germany in the fifth of eight World Cup races. She will also travel to Switzerland and Austria for World Cup races leadingup to the 2014 Olympic Team Selection Announcement on Jan. 19, 2014.

Cousineau Earn Nat’l Award USA Diving announced University of Miami redshirt junior diver Cheyenne Cousineau the recipient of the 2013 Wendy Wyland Award Monday. “To be thought of as demonstrating the qualities that the award entails by my peers and the leaders in USA Diving is an incredible feeling, and something that I’ll cherish forever.”
S&D Enjoys Solid Fall Aided by some impressive times on the final day of competition, the Miami Hurricanes swimming team ended its run at the Georgia Tech Invitational in sixth place. “Our team took another big step forward this week,” head coach Andy Kershaw said. “We had high expectations, and in general we met, and in some cases exceeded, those expectations.” Facing some elite competition at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center, the Hurricanes earned 382.5 points over three days. Miami’s point total came without contributions from its diving counterparts, who spent the weekend at the UT Invite in Austin, Texas. “We all know there is a lot more in the tank, so having achieved the times we did without fully tapering is a great sign of things to come,” Kershaw said. The University of Miami diving team wrapped up its trip to the 2013 University of Texas Invite at the Texas Swimming Center.
Reigning ACC Women’s Diver of the Year Kara McCormack had another strong showing for the Hurricanes. McCormack, who captured second place in the 1-meter finals in the tournament, added another second-place finish in the platform. In front of her hometown crowd, McCormack ended the event with a final score of 303.90. Sophomore Tanner Wilfong and senior Zac Nees continued momentum with top five finishes in a competitive field of platform divers. Wilfong captured fourth with a score of 397.95, while Nees took fifth with a final score of 351.10. The performance capped another solid weekend for Nees, who earned fourth in the 3-meter Friday night with a final score of 421.85.
Cousineau developed a blood clot in her brain that caused a stroke and seizure during the summer before her freshman year at Ohio State University. A day after her 19th birthday, she was told she would never dive again. Now 22, Cousineau has returned to diving and has established herself as one of the best in the country. Whitty Honored at ROWONTARIO Conference
The University of Miami women’s rowing program had one of its members honored at the ROWONTARIO Conference this past weekend in Toronto. Sophomore Alison Whitty was recognized for her success at some of Canada’s most prestigious regattas. The St. Catharines, Ontario, native won the U/19 Ontario and Canadian Henley Championship over the last two years and moved up to U/23 this summer and won both the Double and Quad at the RowOntario Championships and Canadian Henley Regatta. It was his first year competing in that category. “The coaches and the rest of the team are proud of Ally for this well-deserved award,” Miami head rowing coach Dave Sanderson said. “It is wonderful to see UM rowers racing and succeeding outside of the college season.” Whitty’s success on the water has also helped Miami in her time rowing with the Hurricanes. Last year, the freshman sat at the 3-seat in the Open 8+ at Head of the Hooch that placed second, as well as bow-seat in the Championship 8+ that placed third at Hooch. In the spring of her freshman year, Whitty was a member of the 1V8+ that won the Cal Cup at the 2013 San Diego Crew Classic. She also helped the Canes place fourth at the ACC Championships. Whitty’s sophomore season is off to a strong start. She sat at the 7-seat in the Championship 8+ at Head of the Hooch that placed first. In addition, she sat in the 1-seat in the Championship 4+ (A) that placed second at Hooch. Miami rowing is back in action on March 8, 2014 when it will scrimmage against the University of Michigan.
