COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER HILARIE BASS, J.D. ’81

Founder and President of the Bass Institute for Diversity and Inclusion Chair, University of Miami Board of Trustees

Over her illustrious 37-year legal career, Hilarie Bass broke through numerous gender barriers to reach the pinnacle of success, serving as co-president of the global Greenberg Traurig law firm and president of the 400,000-member American Bar Association. Yet the higher Bass, who currently serves as chair of the University of Miami Board of Trustees, rose in legal circles, the fewer women she saw at the top—a disparity she is now determined to end in C-suites everywhere. In 2018, Bass stepped away from her legal career to launch the Bass Institute for Diversity and Inclusion, an organization dedicated to helping top corporate, nonprofit, and law firm leaders create strategies for retaining women and elevating them to senior management roles. The move was the consummate second act by the former actress whose education and experience as a lawyer made her the ultimate problem solver. As the University of Miami School of Law alumna likes to say, “Solving problems is what I love most.” As president of the American Bar Association (ABA), she focused on the high rates of anxiety and depression among lawyers and on eliminating fees and fines assessed against people in the criminal justice system who could not afford them. She also traveled the world, speaking about the insidious damage of implicit bias in the workplace and the importance of retaining and promoting female leaders. At Greenberg Traurig, she won hundreds of millions of dollars during numerous trials, but she is proudest of the pro bono case she pursued on behalf of two children whose gay foster parents were prohibited from adopting them. Her advocacy eventually led to the abolition of Florida’s decadesold ban against gay adoptions. “I still have people approach me on the street to thank me for giving them the ability to have a family,” she told Attorney at Law Magazine. “It brings me to tears every time.” A South Florida native, Bass was the first in her family to earn a college degree and, without the vagaries of show business, she might never have made it to law school. She started performing at age 12 and won the prestigious Silver Knight Award for Drama as a senior at Miami Coral Park High School.

After graduating with a degree in political science at age 20 from George Washington University, she headed to the bright lights of New York City, where she studied under Lee Strasberg at the famed Actor’s Studio. Waitressing between gigs for three years, she landed a number of roles in off Broadway shows and a recurring part in “Somerset.” But when the NBC soap opera was canceled, she returned to Miami, enrolled in the School of Law, and found her professional home. During her second year, she interviewed with Greenberg Traurig for a summer associate position and was offered a job on the spot—long before she graduated at the top of her class. As she moved up the ranks of the firm, serving on its executive committee for more than 20 years, as global chair of its 600-member litigation department for eight years, and as co-president for six years, she established the Women’s Initiative and fought for greater roles for women in the top ranks. But, during her ABA presidency, an in-house study confirmed how little had changed in the nearly 40 years since she had graduated. Although women still made up about half of law school classes and new attorneys, the number of female attorneys who were still practicing at age 50 had dwindled to just 27 percent, leaving a significant gender parity gap in senior leadership. It was after reviewing those findings that Bass decided to exit the firm and devote some of her considerable energy to helping managing partners and CEOs understand why women leave companies and the factors that can help make them stay. A member of the University’s Board of Trustees since 2003, she also devotes considerable time to her alma mater, especially since assuming the “24/7” role of board chair in May 2019—a role she relishes. “My education and experience as a lawyer have trained me to be a problem solver,” she said. “When clients came to my law office, my role was to identify solutions, provide them with options, and help them work their way through the issue. I enjoy serving in that same role as UM board chair.” For her lifelong and tireless devotion to improving the lives of others, the University of Miami School of Law is honored to welcome Hilarie Bass as commencement speaker.

ACADEMIC REGALIA The custom of wearing academic dress stems from the Middle Ages, when scholars were also clerics and wore the habits of their monastic orders. Significant parts of academic dress are the gown, the hood, and the cap. Each

has a particular significance and is worn in accordance with standards established by the Academic Costume Code of the American Council on Education.

GOWNS Gowns recommended for use in the colleges and universities of this country have different characteristics. The gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves and is designed to be worn closed. The gown for the master’s degree has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist. The gown for the doctor’s degree has bell-shaped sleeves. For the doctor’s degree the gown is faced down the front with black velvet and three bars of black velvet are sewn across

the sleeves. These facings and crossbars may be velvet of the color distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains. For all academic purposes, including trimmings of doctor’s gowns, edging of hoods, and tassels of caps, the colors associated with the different subjects are as follows:

Agriculture Maize Architecture Violet Arts, Letters, Humanities White Commerce, Accountancy, Business Drab Dentistry Lilac Economics Copper Education Light Blue Engineering Orange Fine Arts Brown Forestry Russet Journalism Crimson Law Purple Library Science Lemon

Medicine Green Music Pink Nursing Apricot Oratory (Speech) Silver Gray Pharmacy Olive Green Philosophy Dark Blue Physical Education Sage Green Public Administration, Foreign Service Peacock Blue Public Health Salmon Pink Science Golden Yellow Social Work Citron Theology Scarlet Veterinary Science Gray

President Julio Frenk wears a black robe with four black velvet bars. The fourth chevron indicates this is the presidential regalia. The gown features orange and green piping as well as a doctoral hood lined in orange, green, and white— reflecting the official University of Miami school colors. TAMS The graduation tam is for those who have graduated with a masters or doctoral degree. Unlike the mortar board cap which is square in shape, the tam is actually circular in shape and are usually made out of velvet. What is common

between the mortar board cap and the tam is that both do have tassels attached to them which hang on one side when worn. These tassels serve the same purpose and are used during the celebrated turning of the tassel ceremony.

CORDS White cord—Summa Cum Laude Orange cord—Magna Cum Laude Kelly Green—Cum Laude

Hunter Green—Completed the pro bono challenge of seventy five hours of pro bono service during law school career HOODS

Hoods recommended for use in the colleges and universities of this country have the following characteristics. The length of the hood worn for the bachelor’s degree is three feet, for the master’s degree, three and one-half feet, and for the doctor’s degree, four feet. The hood worn for the doctor’s degree has panels at the sides. Hoods are lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree; more than one color is shown by division of the field color in a variety of ways, such as chevron or chevrons, equal division, etc.

The binding or edging of the hood is velvet or velveteen, two inches, three inches, and five inches in width for the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s degrees, respectively, while the color is indicative of the subject to which the degree pertains. For example, the trimming for the Juris Doctor degree is purple. No academic hood should ever have its border divided to represent more than a single degree.

SOME PERMISSIBLE EXCEPTIONS Members of the governing body of a college or university are entitled to wear doctor’s gowns (with black velvet), but their hoods may be only those of degrees actually held by the wearers or those specially prescribed for them by the institution. In some colleges and universities, it is customary for the president, chancellor, or chief officer to wear a costume similar to that used by the head of a foreign university. The chief marshal may wear a specially

designed costume approved by his or her institution. Persons who hold degrees from foreign universities may wear the entire appropriate academic costume, including cap, gown, and hood. Members of religious orders and similar societies may suitably wear their customary habits. The same principle applies to persons wearing military uniforms or clad in special attire required by a civil office.

KENTE CLOTH Kente cloth is woven by the Asante people of Ghana and the Ewe people of Ghana and Togo. The origins of West African weaving are obscure; however, European textile traders arriving on the West Coast of Africa in the late 15th century reported observing the finely woven cloth

at the time. Only men produce kente cloth’s narrow band weaves, which are 2 ½ to 4 ½ inches wide, on horizontal treadle looms. Certain Ewe cloths are historically specific to particular rites of passage, such as marriage or the birth of a child.
