CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF
Gail
D. SEROTA
MIAMILAW UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI SCHOOL OF LAW
Gail
D. SEROTA, JD ’79,
was a lawyer, community leader, wife, and mother.
She fully dedicated herself to whatever she did—school, career, family, community— often simultaneously.
After graduating magna cum laude in 1975 from Princeton University, where she met her husband, Joseph H. Serota, JD ’78, Gail came to Miami Law, turning down an offer from Stanford Law School to be with Joe. Graduating second in her class, Gail clerked for federal appellate Judge Peter Fay, then began her career as a lawyer at the law firm Arky Freed, which later became Stearns Weaver, where she was named partner. Soon after that, Joe and his two law partners started Weiss Serota & Helfman. It wasn’t long before they realized Gail’s talents would greatly benefit the firm; she worked there for 25 years, becoming a partner along the way. Gail’s leadership and enthusiasm also benefited her community. She served as president of the PTA, on the Village of Pinecrest Planning Board, and later as a member of the Village Council. She was President of the Princeton Club of South Florida and President of the Sisterhood at
the Bet Shira Congregation. Gail was immersed in her community, and her community benefited from her service and leadership. To honor her life and memory, Gail’s family, colleagues, and friends have chosen to name an area of the University of Miami School of Law that held special meaning to Gail. The spacious Reading Room in the law library will be named The Gail D. Serota JD ‘79 Reading Room. One of the most beautiful spaces within the law school, the reading room was a place of great meaning to Gail and holds special memories for the Serota family. Two of Gail’s sons, Michael and Nathan, fondly recall hours spent studying in the Daner Law Library Wing, exactly where Gail and Joe also spent time during their three years at Miami Law. With this deep family connection to the School of Law and its Reading Room, it is fitting that Gail’s exemplary legacy will be honored in this space.
