The Summer Scholars Program at Miami University is a two-week summer experience for accomplished high school students who will be juniors or seniors in the fall of 2014. The program provides students with the experiential learning opportunities that prepare them for college and future success: • Dive deeply into a specific academic topic, engage in hands-on learning activities, and forge relationships with influential Miami faculty members and experienced professionals in your chosen field. • Gain a significant advantage in the college admission process by attending helpful seminars with admission experts. • Connect with other elite high school students in an ideal college environment. • Receive priority consideration for Miami merit scholarships and top undergraduate programs such as the University Academic Scholars Program.

1 BO BRINKMAN, Associate Professor and Graduate Director, Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Co-director, Miami University Augmented Reality Center, Ph.D., Computer Science, Princeton University ADVENTURES IN COMPUTING: CODING, “MAKING,” AND PROJECT DESIGN Dr. Brinkman works with students in computer science and graphic design, teaching them to develop high-impact augmented reality applications. He also focuses his work and teachings on exploring the social and ethical implications of computing and interactive media.

3 NISHANI FRAZIER, Assistant Professor of History; Affiliate of the Black World Studies Program, Miami University Heanon Wilkins Fellow; National Endowment for the Humanities grant recipient, Ph.D., Columbia University AN INTERACTIVE QUEST FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE: FREEDOM SUMMER 1964 Dr. Frazier’s teaching and research interests include American history, African-American history, and the 1960s. Her current book project examines the philosophical evolution of the Cleveland chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality.

4 NICOLE JOHNDROW, Adjunct Professor, Department of Theatre ACTING FOR THE STAGE: A PRACTICAL APPROACH A New York City musical theatre actress and cabaret performer, Johndrow’s theatrical credits include the National Tour of Cats and the off-Broadway musical revue Back In Pictures. She has most recently been seen on stage starring in her one-woman, critically acclaimed autobiographical show, Mixtape Confessions: The Diary of a Teenage Optimist.

JAY SMART, Associate Professor of Psychology, Ph.D., Experimental Psychology, University of Cincinnati VIRTUAL TECHNOLOGY TO SOLVE REAL WORLD PROBLEMS One of Dr. Smart’s primary research and teaching interests is ergonomics—specifically, the exploration of human motor control and psychological issues concerning the use and design of virtual environments.

Through informative seminars packed with inside tips from experts, you’ll learn to navigate the college application process and gain a competitive edge on scholarships and financial aid. You’ll live with other Summer Scholars in a residence hall with a head adviser and an experienced staff of student counselors. Rooms are air-conditioned, Wi-Fi accessible, and furnished with beds, desks, dressers, and a refrigerator. You will eat in our award-winning dining halls and experience campus facilities such as our libraries, Armstrong Student Center, and Goggin Ice Center.

A busy social calendar will ensure that you’ll have fun outside of your academic module, too. Trips to Kings Island amusement park, a Cincinnati Reds game, and other activities – from broomball to outdoor concerts – will help you get to know your fellow Summer Scholars.
