Jim Chagdes Associate Professor, Mechanical and Manufacturing

WE PRODUCE ENGINEERS WITH A STRONG SENSE OF ETHICS, AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW TO COLLABORATE, AND THE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE. Through a model we call Socially Engaged Engineering and Computing, you’ll work on projects with global implications and humanitarian objectives. Engineering Through Miami University’s Center for Assistive Technology, Dr. Chagdes works with student researchers to understand the complex body systems that allow a person to balance upright. The goal? Develop methods to prevent falls in people who often struggle with balance, such as the elderly and athletes who have suffered concussions.


ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS (EWB) In addition to getting involved with local projects, Miami’s chapter of EWB is improving the quality of life for people in Uganda and Rwanda by helping them get clean water flowing in their communities. It’s a way for you to make the world a better place while sharpening your technical skills and gaining international experience.

After an injury forced her to stop playing soccer, Grace developed a fascination with the body’s ability to heal. She worked in Miami’s muscle fatigue lab to develop workouts that minimize time spent exercising and maximize health benefits. “My love for research was born out of a terrible experience, but that experience built the foundation for who I am today.”
