Intro-Geometries from Aldo Van Eyck
First of all, I looked into Aldo Van Eyck’s concept of forms and play. The playgrounds he designed perform more than purely geometry but also association.

“Playing” in Architecture
When play is related to architecture, certain means of organization is needed for a guiding process. For example, Sou Fujimoto’s children’s centre in Japan and the City Museum in St Louis MO.

Types of Play
According to Caillois' Play Typology, there are four types of play: competition, chance, balance and mimicry.

11
Competition
One of the competition with playing is racing. Speed, distance and number are the categories of racing. Speed is refering to racing the same distance with fastest velocity; distance means using the same amount of time to race the further space; number means using the same speed and compete the number of series.

Chance
Chance is the unexpected excitement during the process of playing. It includes awarding winning, finding ways in maze, rotating to pass and meander to cross.

Mimicry
Mimicry deals with acting out the same form or action between the other shape or forms. It can be about differently posistioned circles. It can be also about following the adjacent movements step by step.

Diversity Analysis
This map shows the diviersity analysis in St Louis. Whereas the North and South are separated with black and white, tower grove area has a diverse overlap of many races, including black, white, hispanic, asian and other races.

Racial Diversity Observation
When I visited the site, I saw scenes that are variable. In the residential street, an Asian senior is sitting on a chair to enjoy the sunlight. She sat there with 45 degrees towards the street direction. She sat there in silence, glancing at the surrounding with peace.

Building Ages
looking at building ages in St Louis, this area also has few recent constructions and building ages are approximately more than 100 years old. That means the site is waiting for a new construction to happen.

Meanwhile, there are a few buildings on E. Arseal street that are non-residence. These buildings have some disadvantages and are not as effective as entertainments on Grand Blvd. How could these buildings serve better the community?

The non-residnet buildings on arsenal street are less popular than the ones on S Grand Blvd. But when play structures are connecting the facade, this street is possibly more attractive to visitors and the neighborhood.

Urban Fabric Reference
Superflex by BIG is about a large scale urban fabric condition. It requires a larger site and more populations. Whereas the Arsenal street is narrower and has the purpose of attracting more people. Thus the play structure will emphasize more on the linear side of geometry.

45
Program Idea
International Institute used to be an high school academy and was bought and transformed into an adult insitute for immigrants and refugees. The building has an courtyard that could potentially be where the “play space happen.
46
Program Idea
From Arsenal street, the international institute is segregated from the busy S Grand on the West side. In order to allow the population come from S Grand Blvd into Arsenal Street, certain construction need to take place in the link between I. I. and the busy street.
47
Program Idea
Since the link from I.I. to Grand blvd is clear, there’s an tendency to either break through the street side of the building or differenciate it.
48
Program Idea
This play structure is going to be tightly engaged with what exist in building now.
49
Program Idea
The Play types are balance and chance. These playing geometries help guilding the start of a simple organization. And they also makes it easier to apply more details into the whole play structure.
50
Program Idea
These diagrams show how simple geometries could respond to in between spaces. Though the diagrams are not showing the actual dimensions, it is still useful to research into how play types are fitting into buildings.
