OBJECTIVE Create a multi-medium visual system for a hypothetical Film Festival celebrating the director of your choice.

6

"ANNOTATED PROCESS" A written description that helps guide the reader by giving necessary context to the content presented. Throughout the course of this book, I will be here to guide you through the process of how I developed this visual system. My annotations will be presented in this style of text (or what we designers refer to as typographic style) and will clarify not only what I am doing, but why I am doing it- and how it ultimately leads me to my final results.

ALL ABOUT ATTENBOROUGH BIOGRAPHY David Attenborough, the Godfather of natural history TV, has introduced generations to the world’s furry and feathered friends. Beyond natural history he’s had a huge influence as a broadcaster, introducing colour TV when he was Controller of BBC Two. His first series Zoo Quest was created in 1954 and took on a new approach to documenting nature- instead of ripping Animals out of their habitats and into stressful environments, Attenborough demanded his show film on location and capture them in their natural ecosystem. This set the standard for all future Nature Documentaries. Since the launch of his famous Zoo Quest series in 1954 to the recent Planet Earth, he has surveyed almost every aspect of life on earth and has created over 45 documentary films. David has dedicated his entire life to learning and loving this planet, and being a constant advocate for preserving our natural resources. He has studied the effects of climate change extensively, and that has been the theme behind his most recent Netflix documentary series. Recently he has been focusing on spreading awareness on climate change & the looming biodiversity crisis that will effect us all.

STORYLINE DIAGRAM DESCRIPTION As a natural documentarian, Attenborough films have no typical ‘protagonist’— however he does have a specific formula to turning natural footage into a compelling story.

TIME

EMOTIONS

Featured below is a Vonnegut Diagram that demonstrates a typical storyline, and the emotional adventure he takes his audience on.

we’re introduced to an ecosystem and an animal that depends on it.

18

we watch that animal as they operate their daily activites

we’re officially investested in the animal’s well being.

introduced to a predator that goes on to kill the animal.

learn about circle of life, and how the predator is a necessary element.

A graph that traces the ups and downs of the protagonist’s journey—frequently referred to as “the emotional arc” of the story.

continue learning about how the ecosystem operates

learn about how climate change is effecting the ecosystem

see how animals react in their new, decaying, habitats

learn how humans are the reason for this devastation

watch animals persevere through the harshest of odds

a hopeful message that motivates his audience to act.

THE INFLUENCE OF ATTENBOROUGH DAVID ATTENBOROUGH First documentarian to film wild animals in their natural environment- setting the standard for the nature documentaries we're familiar with today. His influence is everywhere, and goes beyond the scope of filmmaking and into the world of education & activism

FILM "We looked at Planet Earth II, and all of those Attenborough documentaries, how much emotion can be expressed without human performance, just music editorial storytelling.”

-John Favreau On finding the visual inspiration for the Live Action Lion King Remake

POLITICS "We're not moving as fast as we need to, and part of what I know from watching your programs, and all the great work you've done, is that these ecosystems are all interconnected. We're going to have to have a global solution to this.”

-President Barack Obama Interviewing David Attenborough in 2015

20

This diagram illustrates David's influence on society. As the first man to portray animals in their natural habitats, his impacts on the fields of natural documentaries, science, research, and activism are simply astronomical.

SCIENCE Attenborough's influence on the scientific community has been honored through naming of newly discovered species, Attenborough’s hawkweed, HIERACIUM ATTENBOROUGHIANUM, a small, yellow flowering native of the Brecon Beacons, ATTENBOROSAURUS CONYBEARI, a Jurassic marine reptile.

ACTIVISM "When I was younger, watching Attenborough programs about the natural world and what was happening, what was going on — that was what made me decide to do something about it, so I thank him for speaking up on the subject."

- Greta Thunberg On Beginning Her Activist Journey

Through the Lens of David Attenborough 7 Decades, 7 Continents- Earth: Unfiltered

The festival dashboard features the main elements & details of the festival. This serves as the groundwork & framing for the development of this system.

THE THREAD The "thread" is the common narrative that embodies the director's entire collection of work. This description helps directmy visual conceptualization towards a relevant theme.

David Attenborough spent the last 70 years documenting animals in their natural habitats, exploring their complex environments and dissecting how each species interacts with each other in a way that contributes to their ecosystem. Ultimately, he tells the sad story of a dying planet, and shows his audience how it directly effects the Animal Kingdom.

GUIDING NARRATIVE The guiding narrative is a tool that establishes the perspective of our visual system. Specifying what the audience should see, how they should feel, and ultimately what message should be emphasized.

I am an Arctic Tern, on my cross continental journey from the Arctic to the Antarctic Circle, observing thousands of species along the way. This voyage is incredibly beautiful as always, but feels different— the air is congested and my favorite resting spots up in the trees seem to have disappeared...at least there are way less predators than usual.

Creating an effective visual system requires a blend of cohesive photography, graphic, and typographic elements. In order to create a visual system that represents David Attenborough, I've focused my inspiration on finding a diverse collection of natural elements presented in a visually interesting way.

CONTENT GATHERING PHOTOGRAPHY The photographs I gathered for my visual system are directly from officially Attenborough sources and BBC Media Packs. I wanted to emphasize the diversity of nature he presents throughout his work and feature a variety of species, landscapes, and natural resources. I also wanted to emphasize the essential theme of Climate Change and feature photography that captures the decline of our healthy wild habitats typically featured in Attenborough Programs.

28

While gathering the specific content to be used throughout the festival— I wanted to emulate the overarching feel of Attenborough: through photography, color, and graphic elements.

29

CONTENT GATHERING GRAPHIC ELEMENTS A challenge I ran into was "how do I make my visual system feel authentic to Attenboroughwithout resembling a National Geographic Campaign?" I decided to solve this problem by featuring unique natural illustrations created with bold, earthy colors. This consistent color palette presenting itself on a variety of natural elements represents the connectedness of earth- how we all survive through what this planet provides for us.

34

The poster was our first experimentation with executing our visual system, I explored many different directions- and wanted to take a moment to demonstrate how much experimentation went into figuring out my finalized visual direction. Ultimately, I wanted to find a graphic blend of real-world photography and animated graphic elements.

“THE FACT REMAINS THAT MAN HAS UNPRECEDENTED CONTROL OVER THE WORLD AND EVERYTHING IN IT. AND SO, WHETHER HE LIKES IT OR NOT, WHAT HAPPENS NEXT IS VERY LARGELY UP TO HIM.” DAVID ATTENBOROUGH, 1979 Thank you so much for taking the time to explore Earth Through the Eyes of Attenborough. Creating this project challenged me to think outside the box, and find creative visual solutions that accurately depict the vision and themes expressed in David Attenborough's work.
