The Junkanoo Festivals of the Bahamas, the Haitian Creole Kanaval, and the Cuban Calle Ocho celebration have all come together and tell the story of the melting pot that is this warm weather paradise.

In 1940, the 18-floor Lord Tarleton Hotel on Collins Avenue between 40th and 41st streets was the tallest building in Miami Beach at that time. The Thompson Miami Beach opened in November 2014 carefully taking into account its design history. Today, after a few incarnations, the 380-room hotel preserves the building’s Art Deco features and 1950s architecture. Everywhere you look you’ll find pops of color and casual glamour with a bohemian vibe. A boardwalk separates the poolside colorful bungalos from the beach. It was here that we chose to to capture the summer vibes that are such a big part of the culture in Miami.

To get a true taste of Cuban culture, a trip to charming Little Havana is a must. As you approach the heart of the neighborhood at SW 8th Street—known as Calle Ocho by the locals—you may feel you’ve been transported to another time and place completely separate from the lavish South Beach hotels or modern downtown high rises. The streets are colorful with both painted and mosaic tile murals. They depict symbols of Cuba, like tropical fruit, musical instruments, dominos, and cigars, while others illustrate Cuban legends, from poet and revolutionary Jose Marti to the singer Celia Cruz who once performed in the neighborhood. Music permeates the streets at all hours of the day - whether it’s blaring from speakers at Lily’s music shop, an impromptu performance by local band Timba Live, or the beat of rumba heard through open doors at Top Cigars. The sound of dominoes clacking from Domino Park is also a common tune to be appreciated.

Cubaocho is a unique place located in the heart of Little Havana, where a large collection of Cuban history and Cuban art is displayed and available free to the community. Home to one of the largest privately owned Cuban art collections in the world, Cubaocho is the linchpin of the arts renaissance now flourishing in Little Havana. The enormous, and famous, pre-revolutionary 1937 work “La Rumba” by Antonio Sánchez Araujo is on display here.

Like most everything in Miami, this swinging bar and live-music venue on Calle Ocho has a dubious past. First opened in the 1930’s, its history includes a clientele that represented the finest of Miami’s criminal underbelly and a shady repertoire of former owners. Entertainers such as the legendary Count Basie would hold daytime jam sessions where members of the audience were invited to come up to the stage and “strut their stuff” musically, while often accompanied by the great musician himself.
New owners Bill Fuller and brothers Zach and Ben Bush have kept the place legit, resurrecting the bar’s architectural charms (and great mojitos) and keeping the nowtrademark neon sign aglow since 2015. Ball & Chain Bar and Lounge 1513 SW 8th Street Little Havana, Florida

LOS PINAREÑOS FRUTERIA
1334 Sw 8th St Miami, FL 33135
provides a taste of island life in a building that looks like it was airlifted from a rural town in the Vinales region of Pinar del Rio in Cuba. 20 minutes from the beach, you can enjoy a glass of guarapo, a batido, or an inexpensive cafecito at this, one of the remaining true monuments to all things Cuban on Calle Ocho. Hang out and feel like a local! Chat up the owners (in Spanish) or the owner’s son, Angel, who grew up in Miami and lived in Northern Virginia before returning to help his parents run the store - you will learn so much not just about tropical fruit, but about juicing, and about the local culture and Cuban experience.
If you want an authentic experience this is the place to visit. Roosters hang out in back, and tourists and locals wander in to pick up a perfectly ripe florida mango or mamey fruit. Local newspapers and the locals, all agree - this is the home of the finest, tastiest fresh-pressed sugarcane juice anywhere.
“a monument to all things Cuban on Calle Ocho.” They get it fresh every day, cut in nearby West Palm, and they run it through the press 3-4 times, which produces much more flavor than a single pass through the wringer. Shake it up, drink it cold, and enjoy your new addiction!

HISTORIC DOMINO PARK Maximo Gomez Domino Park is a landmark on Calle Ocho, and is always full of neighborhood domino players - usually older men who have mastered the game over years of practice. Named after the famous soldier Maximo Gomez who fought for Cuban independence from Spain, Domino Park sits on the corner of Calle Ocho and 15th Avenue. It is surrounded by shops and restaurants. The park is free and opened to the public during sunlight hours, and you’re sure to find a loud, spirited domino game going on at any time of day. Calle Ocho, or Eighth Street, is the unofficial capital of Miami’s Cuban community. Known for its food and restaurants, Cuban coffee windows (or ventanitas), cigar shops, music and cultural activities, Calle Ocho is the main artery of Little Havana. The lively street, just west of Brickell Avenue and Downtown, hosts several festivals and art fairs throughout the year but it’s alive every day with the hustle and bustle of local activity and tourists exploring the authentic neighborhood.

Nestled in the heart of Little Havana stands Miami’s legendary creamery Azucar (1503 SW Eighth St.), home of iconic Cuban and tropical flavors like flan, plátano maduro, passionfruit, and the trademarked Abuela Maria, classic vanilla ice cream with guava, chunks of cream cheese, and Maria cookies. The giant ice-cream cone above the entrance may be what lures in tourists and locals alike to this Calle Ocho sweet shop, but its Azucar’s use of high-quality, handmade ice cream — the kind abuela used to make — that keeps them coming back for more.

Port-au-Prince’s annual carnival is one of the largest Mardi Gras carnivals in the Caribbean and North America. In Haiti, carnival is also heavily influenced by local customs, such as Vodou religious rituals, and Haitian music. The carnival is celebrated with music, bands and parades. Revelers wear masks and costumes, as they do at other carnival celebrations in the Caribbean, North America, and Central and South America. Music is central to Haiti’s carnival. Musicians perform zouk, rap kreyòl rap, konpa (Compas), and mizik rasin. On the streets of Little Haiti in Miami, as well as in neighboring Haitian Cafe’s found throughout the city, the tradition of Kanaval and the colorful array of street art is very much alive.
