Fall 17 is about fantasy and opulance, taking its cue as far back as the 17th century. Like today, it was an era when the quest for wealth and power was consistent with modern times. This season, MIA mimics the elements of historical times with the use of lavish and textured surfaces that excite the senses while igniting the imagination. By mixing unexpected materials and finishes, we give you many ways to update basic silhouettes with a luxe and fem-leisure attitude.

THE MULE
IS HAVING A MOMENT
Mules are simple shoes with a complicated story. A backless style, available in various silhouettes, mules can be a sandal, a clog, a sneaker, a low or high heel, and can easily be worn both casually or formally. Most are designed with a closed toe but its open-toe variation, commonly referred to as slides, are also defined as mules. Originally, the mule was an indicator of social status. Since the common laborer had no use for a shoe that could easily slip off nor guard against weather conditions, their impracticality made them a luxury item; a sign of prestige indicating to others that one lived an aristocratic lifestyle. It was their opulence that made them the go-to shoes of the wealthy during the Baroque period of the 17th and 18th centuries. Their association with luxury and high society is what has kept the mule alive for the modern woman. A mainstay in the shoe world since their resurgence of popularity in the 1950’s, mules have been having a moment. Renown designer brands like Miu Miu, Balenciaga, Michael Kors and Victoria Beckham have all helped bring back the popularity of this style in a big way. Today, a street-style staple worn by celebrities, editors, and bloggers, the mule has become the go-to shoe for any fashionista’s wardrobe.
