egardless of the threat of lawsuit, employers are still asking for passwords to Facebook accounts. So now it’s not uncommon for bosses to ask to see their employees’ Facebook profiles, when does seemingly innocent, or even beneficial “monitoring” turn into “snooping”? In the next three years, this is a question that employees will ask more according to a new Gartner report which predicts that by 2015, 60 percent of corporations are expected to put formal programs in place for “monitoring external social media for security breaches.” By monitoring their employees’ Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn feeds, these companies prevent critical and potentially damaging information from being put out into the social media world. ‘Employees on social media can ... embarrass their employers.’ - Sophos analyst Lisa Vaas. “In other words, the development of effective security intelligence and control depends on the ability to capture and analyze user actions that take place inside and outside of the enterprise IT environment,” Andrew Walls, research vice president of Gartner, wrote in the report, “Conduct Digital Surveillance Ethically and Legally: 2012 Update.” Gartner says less than 10 percent of companies currently monitor employees’ social media profiles as part of their security monitoring programs. It’s a practice that can “both mitigate and create risk,” Walls said. The spike in monitoring highlights the ethical gray area surrounding social networking privacy, especially between employers and their staff. As we highlighted in March, Facebook announced it take legal action against employers who demanded the usernames and passwords of potential job applicants. Lisa Vaas from the security company Sophos agreed that social media does present security risks: “Employees on social media can give away trade secrets or simply act like unprofessional idiots and thereby embarrass their employers,” she wrote. “They can also click on scams in Facebook,” which could harm the company’s internal networks. Vaas has some advice for companies implementing the monitoring programs. “As we move toward workplaces with ever more pervasive surveillance, I’d suggest that organizations take the time to study the privacy laws,” she said in a Sophos blog post. “Those laws continue to evolve. You might be within your rights today, but seen as a leering Big Brother tomorrow.”

9 Sun-Protective Foods By Chris Kilham
Y
ou may be surprised to learn that many common foods offer some protection to your skin from the potentially damaging rays of the sun, from the inside out. This SPF or sun protective factor aspect of foods has to do with the presence of certain antioxidant compounds. Plants produce antioxidants within their own tissues to protect their own cells from premature destruction, due to exposure to heat, light, air, moisture and time. When we consume many of these plant-derived antioxidants, these natural agents provide protection to the cells of our bodies, including skin cells. By eating certain foods, especially those that are brightly colored, you can actually help to reduce damage to your skin caused by exposure to UVA and UVB rays from sunlight. Let’s consider some of the better sun protective foods. Colored peppers The red, yellow and orange peppers that look so beautiful and taste so sweet are colored by natural pigments called carotenoids. These antioxidants convert to vitamin A in the body, and help to protect skin cells by inhibiting the destruction of the thin lipid (fat) layer that surrounds skin cells. Yellow summer squash Cube it and put it on kebabs or brochettes, or just eat it in salads. Yellow summer squash derives its bright color from the protective carotenoids. Eat it because it tastes good- and provides solar defense. Ripe red tomatoes The natural antioxidant pigment lycopene gives the characteristic red color to ripe red tomatoes. This antioxidant is well known for providing protection to the prostate gland, helping to mitigate cases of BPH, benign prostatic hyperplasia, also known as enlargement of the prostate. But like other antioxidant compounds in foods, lycopene also protects skin cells from exposure to the sun. Watermelon Say ditto for watermelon, regarding lycopene. Watermelons get their red color from this pigment as well. When summer rolls around and the sun gets hotter and brighter, eat your share of watermelon to cool your skin cells. Green tea What doesn’t green tea do for health? It enhances cardiovascular function, demonstrates anti-cancer activity, supports the immune system, detoxifies the body, aids weight control, and also protects skin cells from exposure to UVA and UVB rays. The secret ingredients? Antioxidant compounds called polyphenol catechins provide super-powerful defense. You can’t go wrong drinking green tea every day. Continued on page 16

Cocoa Perhaps the healthiest substance you can put in your mouth after water, cocoa is the ultimate superfood, containing 712 compounds, many of which are potently antioxidant and skin-protective. The flavanols in cocoa provide profound protection for the heart, helping to greatly lower the risk of heart attack, stroke and high blood pressure. But the same compounds help to armor your skin cells. The news about cocoa seems to get better every day. Eat the real dark chocolate, consume whole, organic cocoa, and enjoy. Blue and purple berries What do blueberries, black currants, acai, cranberries, blackberries and elderberries all have in common? They are all rich in the potent purple pigments known as anthocyanins. These may be nature’s mightiest of all protective compounds, helping to reduce the risk of many chronic and degenerative diseases, and providing excellent SPF protection. Eat your berries because they are delicious, and enjoy the protection as part of the overall experience. Turmeric root This yellow root contains a profoundly beneficial compound called curcumin that possesses superior anti-inflammatory activity, aids the immune system, enhances the brain, and protects your skin. Curcumin from turmeric is a very popular anti-inflammatory remedy. You can sprinkle turmeric on food, cook with it, or use curcumin supplements. Fin fish The omega 3 fatty acids that have been proven to provide excellent protection for the heart also provide protection to skin. These agents are essential to overall health and well being, and also help skin cells to stay healthy. You can also take omega 3 fatty acid supplements derived from fish oil. Just because certain foods provide protection from the harmful rays of the sun does not mean that you can eat some veggies and then go lie out in the sun all day. But it does mean that if you are exposed to the sun, you will have the protective activity of nature’s antioxidants working in your body to protect your skin from the inside out. Tan responsibly. Use sunscreen before going out in the sun, and enjoy a safe and happy summer season. Chris Kilham is a medicine hunter who researches natural remedies all over the world, from the Amazon to Siberia. Dr. Greene’s book, “Feeding Baby Green,” Gets Two Green Thumbs Up
L
ast year, I attended the “Natural Baby Fair,” in Point Loma, California (a small city in San Diego). Needless to say, I truly had a blast! Five months pregnant with our child, I waddled from booth to booth learning of all the countless ways to have as natural childbirth and birthing experience as possible. The best part of the day was listening to guest speaker and meeting Dr. Alan Greene, author of “Feeding Baby Green.”
In the book, he discusses how he recommends to “white out” American food, especially food given to babies and children that is getting children hooked on junk food. What are “white” foods? Anything from white rice, white bread, rice cereals, juices with no juice, processed and junk foods, all fall into this category. When one considered that the baby is well on the way to developing a taste for certain foods while the mom is pregnant, then what a mom does while she is pregnant is just as important as what she does before and after. In “Feeding Baby Green,” he shows how an entire family can eat well while positively influencing a child’s eating habits from the beginning. Dr. Greene’s quest is a noble one: to get your child hooked on fruits, vegetable, whole grains, fish, and organic meats; to develop an open pallet for all natural spices and flavors as research shows, spices have been shown to have many therapeutic benefits. By following his book, I even tasted things I had never tasted and loved them! Now our daughter loves her food and has developed a healthy relationship with it. In this short, this easy to read book filled with great recipes, suggestions and his own family’s food battles, he navigates a family from pre-pregnancy well into the shift of the baby to eating solids and beyond. My family has truly benefited from his research, conclusions and book. I hope you’ll pick up a copy so that yours will too. Bon Appétit!

Mario Batali,
A Hungry Chef on Food Stamp Challenge
I
t was Day Four for Mario Batali. The chef and his family were eating for a week on the equivalent of a food stamp budget in protest of potential cuts pending in Congress to the benefit program used by more than 46 million Americans. For his family it is $31 per person for the week, or about $1.48 per meal each. Good-bye restaurants, free nibbles on his talk show, “The Chew,” and all the luxury offered at Eataly, the high-end New York City market he co-owns. Hello Trader Joe’s, Jack’s Dollar Store, Gristedes and Western Beef, a low-cost supermarket chain. “I’m (expletive deleted) starving,” said Batali, who’s on the board of the food relief agency Food Bank for New York City, which issued the challenge to celeb pals like Batali and anybody else who wants to know what it’s like. Batali said his first reaction when asked to join was a big “gulp,” then he realized while shopping for Friday’s start of the challenge that with a little forethought it wouldn’t be all that brutal. One lesson: forget organic and anything pesticide- or hormone-free. “The organic word slides out and saves you about 50 percent.” So what’s on the Batali menu through Thursday? Lentil chili with onion, water and cumin was one dinner that came with a complaint from his wife when he bought two bags of lentils instead of one; until he convinced her the extra cost would mean cheap eats for the next day. “Rice and beans is in my lunch every day,” Batali said. “We got a bag of mini gala apples for $3. We bought a pork shoulder roast for $8 and got two and a half meals out of it. I got a whole chicken for $5, but it was spoiled so I had to return it and got a $7 chicken instead. They were out of $5 chickens.” Convenience also has been sacrificed, like running late and the family grabbing hot dogs before a basketball game but couldn’t. His kids are doing well and didn’t have to be dragged into what Batali described as less of a publicity stunt and more of a conversation starter about what it means to be hungry in America today.
“They’re having more peanut butter and jelly than they’ve had in the last 10 years because bread is inexpensive and peanut butter and jelly, if you buy it at the right place at the right time, is cheap,” Batali said. Also, the boys are eating school lunch, as those in low-income families do for free. The Batalis have been joined on the week long challenge by wholesale meat purveyor Pat LaFrieda, who has a new Food Network series, “Meat Men,” Margarette Purvis, who heads the food bank, as well as more than 200 others who registered to complete the challenge. And anti-hunger groups in Las Vegas, Philadelphia and parts of Maryland and Ohio have led similar challenges over the last several months. “Nearly 3 million New Yorkers have difficulty paying for the food they need,” Purvis said. “They live in every single neighborhood. We’re not trying to compare the food stamp challenge to the very real challenges people face. We’re just trying to raise awareness that it’s no longer just the homeless. It’s working families who use the food stamp program. It’s seniors. It’s a lot more children, in every single neighborhood.” Any surprises for the chef? “I thought spare ribs were cheap,” Batali said. “Spare ribs this week are $5.95, so I’m making pasta sauce with two pork chops that were $1.39 a pound. It won’t have as many bones to chew on but it’ll have more edible meat, which at the end of the day is probably a better deal.” Batali has taken his challenge to “The Chew,” where he and his crew will be chatting all week about eating on less. “We, hopefully, aren’t pretending or being like a bunch of yuppies saying, ‘Oh yeah, this is how you can do it. Look, we can grind our own oats!’ We want people to think about calling and talking to their [representative] about cuts to the Farm Bill and the food stamp program,” he said. Subsisting on food stamps, especially when food is made from scratch, is doable, he said, “as a way to live, but certainly not as a way to thrive. You can always have pasta with tomato, but that’s not thriving.”
Ameila Earhart’s Final Resting Place Nikumroro Islands?
P
ossibly. The fates of the great pilot, Amelia Earhart and her navigational guide, Fred Noonan, have had hundreds speculate just what really happened to them during that faithful last flight. The most popular guesses being that they either perished by crashing into the Pacific Ocean after running out of fuel or landed and perished as castaways on the Gardner Island (now called Nikumaroro). Being a huge fan of Earhart, it always struck me as odd that such an accomplished pilot and guide would fly and willingly run out of fuel, not having a back-up plan. To me that is like crossing the desert with no water. It just does not make sense. So when a small cosmetic jar found on a remote island in the Pacific began to offer new clues in the Amelia Earhart mystery. To say I was overjoyed is an understatement. The artifact could have been a jar of Dr. Berry’s Freckle Ointment, a concoction once used to fade freckles. Like my sister and many other women, Amelia had freckles and disliked having them. “It’s well documented Amelia had freckles and disliked having them,” Joe Cerniglia, the TIGHAR researcher who spotted the freckle ointment as a possible match, told Discovery News. The jar fragments were found together with other artifacts during TIGHAR’s nine archaeological expeditions to the tiny coral atoll believed to be Earhart’s final resting place. Analysis of the recovered artifacts was presented at a three-day conference in Arlington, Va. Where the results of the new study of post loss radio signals and the latest forensic analysis of a photograph believed to show the landing gear of Earhart’s aircraft on Nikumaroro reef three months after her disappearance and also discussed. Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of their disappearance, the symposium highlighted TIGHAR’s hightech search to take place July 2 to find pieces of Earhart’s Lockheed Electra aircraft. But according to Ric Gillespie, executive director of TIGHAR, there is an alternative scenario. “The navigation line Amelia described in her final in-flight radio transmission passed through not only Howland Island, her intended destination, but also Gardner Island, now called Nikumaroro,” Gillespie said at a special press event on March 20 hosted by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. According to Gillespie, the possibility that Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan might have made an emergency landing on Nikumaroro’s flat coral reef, some 300 miles southeast of their target destination, is supported by a number of artifacts which, combined with archival research, strongly point to a castaway presence on the remote island. “Broken shards from several glass containers have been recovered from the Niku 7 Site, the archaeological site on the southeast end of Nikumaroro that fits the description of where the partial skeleton of a castaway was discovered in. Found with the skeletal remains at that time were part of a man’s shoe. Like most archaeological sites, the Niku 7 Site has yielded evidence of activity from several different periods in the island’s history and not all of the glass recovered from the site is attributable to the castaway. Much of the glass, however, appears to be associated with a castaway presence. PHOTOS: Amelia Earhart & Jars Hint at Amelia Earhart Castaway Presence “It seems reasonable to speculate that the bottles were used by the castaway to boil collected water to make it safe for drinking,” he added. Some of the recovered items contained products generally used only by women. So far, the researchers have not been able to match the exact size of the artifact jar to a known jar of

Dr. Berry’s Freckle Ointment of the same size as the artifact jar, but we don’t know whether it was clear glass,” Gillespie said. More important than the exact contents of the jar, The expedition set sail on July 2, 2012. The website says, “The objective of the expedition is to locate, identify and photograph any and all surviving aircraft wreckage.” The team will use sonar-quipped ship and an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle to scan the ocean floor in hopes to find wreckage. Once this is completed, a video-enabled Remote Operated Vehicle will be sent to explore potential wreckage. The Niku 7’s website is working with the Disney Channel crew in hopes of filming the work for a television special scheduled to air later this year. If successful, TIGHAR will help close one of the chapters in the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan, and finally give the little girl in me closure to one of my greatest role models.

Jill Peters Helps Clean Up Lemon Grove, CA
Interview by Mia Abdul-Hakeem, June 19, 2012
On May 27, 2012 I thought was just a regular ole Sunday, editing and proofing submissions for our magazine and I fell into a growing community clean up organized by the people of Lemon Grove, CA. So of course I had to find out the scoop. WHWN : I’m sitting here with Jill Peters, Starbucks maganer of the Lemon Grove office. The reason we got together is I was sitting in here on Sunday May 27th and just happened to fall into your “Clean Up Lemon Grove” event. JILL: Yes, it came about because the city owns the other side of the block and keeps it clean. But this side is owned by storefronts and the landlords and a lot of the small businesses do not have the manpower to clean keep it clean. Sooty, one of my regulars--she is adorable--came in one day and said, “I’m tired! I’m going to clean it! Right now there is graffiti and I’m stepping over stuff!” So I sent her out with one of my partners and they scrubbed graffiti and they cleaned up some garbage and they thought why can’t they do this monthly? And that’s how it started. So it’s really Sooty who gave me the idea and it’s really is community. It was her idea and I started to talk to some of my regulars like, “Hey we’re thinking of doing this clean-up of the sidewalks…” and they were like, “I’ll come out!” WHWN: That’s awesome that some of the business owners would want to get involved… JILL: Well it wasn’t even the business owners, it was some of my regular customers and then Rick Oser from Golden Avenue Elementary School, he and I have done some volunteer projects together, and he heard about it, posted it then came over with his daughters and about ten of his employees and their families. As I was talking about it with him Anne Boyle, a teacher at St. John’s Cross said, “I have eighth graders who need to do volunteer work. Can they come?” I was like, “Of course!” And honestly, I thought it would be like ten of us but it became like 40 plus people! WHWN: I’m getting goose bumps just hearing about this! JILL: It took two weeks to organize it. I went to Costco to get snacks and water, the Dollar Store to get pales to clean with and we used cleaning supplies from Starbucks. We got the final head count organized and went for it! WHWN: Is this the first one? JILL: Yes. The next one is on July 1st as I am out of town that Sunday. The last one we got to clean windows and remove graffiti and do some painting, swept and pick up garbage all along here to the Jack N the Box. WHWN: This is contagious. Hopefully more will pitch in to help. JILL: Yes because they realize that others are thinking the same way and want to clean up their neighborhood. WHWN: It just takes that first initiative to get it going. That’s the hard part, starting. But once someone does, others will join in. Funny how we people are, isn’t it? Continued on page 28
Struggling with Insomnia, Junior Seau Used Prescription Drugs for Years
F
ormer NFL great Junior Seau, who committed suicide, suffered from insomnia for years and relied on prescription drugs to help him sleep. USA Today interviewed more than 50 friends, family members, neighbors and former teammates in an effort to piece together possible clues on why the former Chargers linebacker shot himself in the chest in his San Diego-area home May 2. A common theme that emerged was the 43-year-old had persistent sleeping troubles, and possible misuse d the prescription drugs that were meant to help him sleep. At least four friends told USA Today they believed Seau took Ambien, or a generic form of the drug Zolpidem. The prescribing information for Ambien warns that suicidal thoughts can be exhibited by depressed patients taking the class of drugs. Friends reported that Seau drank regularly, despite warnings against taking the drug and consuming alcohol, on top of continued use of the drug even though he was not getting a full night’s sleep. “He told me he usually woke up around one or two and couldn’t go back to sleep,” said Nancy Emsley, who knew Seau from the local gym. Emsley said Seau “just rolled his eyes” when she told him he needed to sleep for eight hours after taking Ambien. Mark Walczak, who played with Seau in the 1990s, said he saw Seau use sleeping medication in 2005 when he visited the 12-time Pro Bowler in Miami, where he played for the Dolphins. Though Seau never reported a concussion in his 20 NFL seasons, sleeping disorders are common in people who have experienced traumatic brain injuries, University of North Carolina researcher Kevin Guskiewicz told USA Today. Seau’s family has not publicly announced a decision on whether they will donate his brain to researchers studying the long-term neurological effects of concussions suffered by athletes.

JILL: Yes, Sooty said she felt crazy. She then said she’d begin to believe, “Am I the only one who cares?” I reassured her that she was neither crazy nor they only one to feel that way. When she saw the turn out and was teary-eyed saying, “You don’t even know how much this means to me.” Because she walks from her house to here every day with her dog and wants to enjoy the walk. At first she was like, “I’m ready to move out of Lemon Grove!” But this reignited some passion for her to want to stick around. And as far as community service goes, as she’s doing it, store managers are coming out saying, “Thank you. Next month we’ll help you do it!” It’s going to be huge!
The next one we’re going to scrap gum off the sidewalks, pick up the trash, do graffiti removal again and do the windows. My ultimate goal is that by September, people will come out to Lemon Grove’s first Art Fair. Ann and I connected right afterwards and was like, “The kids and I loved it! We are looking forward to the next one.” I mentioned we should go bigger; cleaning it up so we can have the art fair. I mentioned it to a couple of my customers who are artists and they were happy to help. They were like let’s get tents let’s get this and that... Anne at that point mentioned they are doing a school art fair and why don’t we come hand and hand. We’ll do the school fair on Saturday and the art fair on Sunday. WHWN: That’s perfect to make it a weekend event. JILL: Yes, we can get people out and we’re really busy on Sundays with people going to church. So as go to church or it lets out people, come here. Now they can grab their coffee and walk down a really clean sidewalk go to the art fair and farmer’s market. WHWN: It’s like giving Lemon Grove a facelift. JILL: Yeah, exactly! I want it to be as pretty as La Mesa. I drove through to look and see what is different. Well, the buildings are painted and I think it drew in more business owners. So hopefully we can do the same. WHWN: Maybe contact some local painters that can donate their time and supplies to help out. Because I really think that that is what It is about; a community coming out to help itself. Especially if they are advertising while they are painting; wearing their company uniforms, like I saw some of the kids wearing their uniforms advertising their sports team. JILL: Exactly! That’s such a great idea! It’s exciting to be a part of something from the start. To watch it grow and take off; knowing that if I’m not here, the community, the business owners—all will continue this forward. WHWN: This is awesome and exactly what this magazine is looking for: people like you. JILL: Thanks. It is really a community effort. The next one is July 1st, though I want to standardize it so it is the last Sunday of the month. So people can know that it is ongoing event for them. Then in September we are doing the Art Fair.

irst off, thank you so much for taking time to let us catch up with you. Man! You’re always making major moves, from jet-setting with Curren$y to your outreach program on Autism. We are very proud of you and you will always have a home with Who’s Hot? & Who’s Not! as one of the leaders! So thank you for allowing us to document your work. WHWN: So what’s new in your world? EF: Just readjusting to home life after being on tour for 2 months, working on some events, music, etc. WHWN: Tell us more about you outreach on Autism. It touches so many families and now is finally getting the much needed attention as family stop hiding behind the belief that their child doesn’t have a problem, to speaking with others and sharing tools that help improve the lives of those living with it. EF: I help spread awareness through my website, djefcuttin.com where I have a tab that tells all about Autism from my perspective, being a parent of an Autistic son. WHWN: See that’s why your leadership has made the WHO’S HOT! list because you make it a priority to help pass on knowledge you have gained through your own life experiences. We are honored to have you grace our magazine. Please give all the contact information, media, and website, anything we can use to post and keep in the magazine and on the website going forward. EF: Definitely. As I mentioned earlier, my website is djefcuttin.com, also you can find me on Twitter, ReverbNation, Facebook, Instagram. and Datpif (/efcuttin). Continued on next page
WHWN: What is #TeamCuttin up to? EF: Plotting on a world takeover LMAO!!!! Seriously, spreading the awareness about me and my abilities, something the tour greatly helped me with. Also making people aware about the fact I produce as well. Also I’m working towards forming a consultant company in the future, so I can start to charge people for all the free game I been givin out LOL WHWN: You mentioned events on the 23rd and in July. Please give details so we can include them. Of course as you continue, please keep us in the loop so we can keep our readers in contact with you. EF: Actually since we talked I added an event. Starting July 16 I’m throwing Day Parties every Sunday at NV Lounge. July 20 is The Silent Disco. Go to Youtube and search Silent Disco because its too tough to explain. This Saturday the 23 I’ll be at NOLA SummerJam backing Monsta Beatz, a very dope duo best known for their work on all of Curren$y’s projects. WHWN: You just got back from tour with Curren$y, how was it? Anything you liked the most or disliked? EF: That was an incredible experience!!!! 56 cities, crazed fans, me actually signing autographs, it was definitely one of my life’s highlights. I really liked the fact the fans loved every act on the tour as opposed to being partial only to Spitta and Styles P. Of course I liked the copious amounts of high grade smoke I consumed LMAO!! I also liked the bond we formed out there with the fans, and each other. Didn’t care too much for the Border Patrol getting back into the U.S., who hacked us up after GOOGLING who Curren$y was (!!!). Also I wasn’t thrilled with some venues playing The Reefer Nazis. But that was about it. It was truly a life-fulfilling moment for me. Continued on page 33

Autism Awareness I’m writing this 2 make you aware of the issue of Autism. This is very important to me for a variety of reasons, most importantly the fact that my youngest son is on the Autism Spectrum. Autism is a neurological disorder that affects one’s ability to socialize and assimilate into “normal” society. Right now the rate of children diagnosed with this disorder has skyrocketed to 1 in 100 children, and more alarmingly 1 in 70 male children are diagnosed with Autism. Older doctors tend to shun the diagnoses and will say things like, “Oh, he’ll grow out of it.” and things like that, but I urge all parents who sense something is “not quite right” to seek help. If detected early, you can implement things that will help your child as he/she gets older, as opposed to ignoring it and then becoming angry or frustrated with the child. Most children on the spectrum often have unique gifts. For example, my son is a natural drummer and plays scarily good without as much as having a single lesson. The key is to find a way to link with the child using his/her interests, as they will be few, and nurture those to the max. The hardest thing of all is being able to afford the schools that specialize in educating autistic children, as public schools are rarely equipped to do so. Sadly, it’s going to take some high ranking official with an autistic child to introduce legislation to help combat this problem, but until that day comes, it’s on us to do what we can for our children. It’s important to make sure your child meets the “milestones” during the first 2 years of life and to have him/her checked if you notice that they have not. It’s a fight for the long haul, so expect lots of disappointment in the system, but never take it out on the child, for their fight is a helluva lot harder than ours. April is Autism Awareness month, please educate yourselves on this epidemic, even if you have “typical” children, so you will be able to identify and even help an Autistic child or adult. — Thomas Edwards (DJ E.F.
