2021-2022 MCOY AWARDS 3

Welcome to the 11th Annual MCOY Awards The American Subcontractors Association of Michigan (ASAM) welcomes you to the 11th annual Michigan Contractor of the Year Awards (MCOY). Within the construction industry, this is Michigan’s premier event for recognizing general contractors and construction managers with a track record of best practices, professionalism and collaboration with the subcontracting community. This prestigious award has tremendous meaning because it only goes to contractors who operate at the highest level. We are proud to have such strong general contractors and construction managers to work with year after year.

MCOY:

A process and criteria that define excellence

T

here are good reasons why the Michigan Contractor of the Year (MCOY) Awards have become such a popular event—and perhaps the biggest reason is that the awards aren’t just about celebrating those contractors who have discovered the “winning formula.” Rather, they’re about improving the overall construction industry where the rest of us live and work. When the annual MCOY Awards were developed 11 years ago, the emphasis was on how to improve working relationships between trade contractors and contractors. The underlying intent is to support those who are doing a great job—reinforcing what they are doing while making it desirable for others to follow suit. The award, by design, is not a “popularity contest.” Instead, it gives the American Subcontractors Association of Michigan (ASAM) members an opportunity to nominate and recognize general contractors and construction managers who exhibit best practices, professionalism, and collaboration within Michigan’s subcontracting community. More significantly, the process educates our general contractor friends about how trade contractors and suppliers view the partnerships that are formed through construction projects. Contractors

are nominated based on the experiences a trade contractor has with the general contractors they work with. The goal of the MCOY Awards is to build trusting relationships; the end result is a community of top-notch contractors and trade contractors working as a team—with owners getting everything they pay for and more. ASAM set out to make a difference through action and responsibility; the popularity of the MCOY event is evidence that members of the construction industry have the same desire to play at a high level. ASAM members evaluated nominees for performance in specific categories that are essential to the contractor-trade contractor relationship. Each member company scored nominees in a confidential, defined process encompassing the following criteria: Bid Ethics & Practices, Safety, Jobsite Supervision, Communication, Schedule Coordination, Project Relations, Administrative Procedures, Payment per Terms and Quality Workmanship. Bid Ethics & Practices – Ensures consistency as it relates to scope of work, plans, specifications and contracts, and provides sufficient time to react to

changes noted in addenda, RFIs, and other communications. Does not knowingly push undue risk onto trade contractors. Respects confidentiality of trade contractor quotes, and does not practice “Post Award” price reductions. Safety – Leads the way in creating a safe jobsite by ensuring each site is clean, neat, organized and routinely inspected. Provides written standards as it relates to jobsite safety, creates a job environment which encourages safety education, proactive site-specific safety planning, and holds all of those involved on a project accountable to follow these standards. Jobsite Supervision – Experienced supervisor who understands effective workflow. Creates a team approach with Trade Contractors. Limits delays and wasteful sequencing, stacking and acceleration. Takes the lead in dealing with site challenges, professionally and in a timely manner, and treats individuals with respect and dignity. Provides sufficient supervisory manpower to meet project needs.

MCOY COMMITTEE John Turner, Committee Chair James Bockheim Matt DeVries Dan Hall Chris Nyenhuis Ann Plummer Mike Waalkes

Communication – Questions and concerns are dealt with in a timely manner so as to keep the project moving forward. Regularly communicates candidly, openly, and professionally, and shares successes and challenges to all of those involved in the project. Schedule Coordination – Builds collaborative, realistic, and dependable schedules. Consistently updates and communicates revised schedules with all Trade Contractors. Understands project flow and Trade Contractor task durations, and proactively solves roadblocks. Effectively sequences the work, and holds everyone accountable to meet the project schedule.

Project Relations – Establishes a spirit of teamwork in the office and in the field. Handles all team members’ concerns and input in a cooperative, reasonable manner. Sets the tone on the job for all to work together for the good of the project. Manages the owners’ expectations, and works to ensure that all Trade Contractors involved maintain a positive reputation. Administrative Procedures – Clearly defines administrative procedures at time of contract issue. Provides a contract and replies to RFIs, Bulletin Quotes, and other change correspondence in a timely manner, and requires all Trade Contractors to do the same. Does not expect the Trade Contractor to take unnecessary risks or make assumptions that may later prove false. Payment per Terms – Clearly outlines timing and payment application requirements. Proactively communicates any payment delays. Recognizes the importance of cash flow to the Trade Contractors on the project. As project progresses, releases retainage in timely fashion. Fights for reasonable Trade Contractor payment terms, and holds owners accountable.

Letter from the President W

elcome to our 11th annual Michigan Contractor of the Year Awards celebration!

First, I’d like to start by congratulating our seven nominees. These companies truly embody the spirit of MCOY— strong communication, professionalism, and world-class workmanship. Tonight’s theme, “Back At It—Together,” is all about celebrating moving into the future as a united industry. MCOY has always been about our trade contractors’ desire to foster meaningful partnerships and to create an industry-wide culture that encourages professional and personal development. This year, after a year away, we want to encourage relationship building with a relaxed and fun evening out at the ballpark. We are very excited to celebrate the best of the West Michigan construction industry with games and live music, after a year of celebration all but lost to the pandemic. Does it make sense to celebrate the best of the West Michigan construction industry together and with live music? After a year all but lost to the pandemic, for me, the answer is a resounding yes. It is a challenge for leadership to create the kind of culture that fosters both high morale and productivity. It’s when we give ourselves the gift of prioritizing rest and good old-fashioned fun that we reconnect with our peers, strengthen our relationships, and get the distance from our everyday stresses we need to come back and address them with renewed vigor and creativity. I very much look forward to spending the evening with you!

MCOY Committee Chair Letter

B

ack in February, when the MCOY Committee sat down to plan our 11th annual MCOY awards, we, like everyone else in the world, had no idea what August 2021 would look like. All we knew was that planning an indoor event for more than 500 people was a non-starter, and that MCOY 2021-2022 would be different this year! After 10 years at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, we knew changing venues would be a challenge, but we also saw it as a great opportunity to try something new. After evaluating many options and hybrid-style events, we knew the most important thing to do was to figure out a way to have everyone together and celebrate in person, and I could not be more excited about the solution we moved forward with.

Lake Michigan Credit Union Ballpark has been amazing to work with. When COVID-19 canceled the remainder of the 2020 baseball season, the ballpark also had to adapt. Since summer 2020, LMCU ballpark has quietly become a premiere venue for outdoor gatherings of all shapes and sizes in West Michigan. They’ve been professional, accommodating, and extremely helpful throughout this process. Thanks, LMCU Ballpark! The day is finally here. We’re Back At It—Together. The stage is set. The votes are in. All we have left to do is enjoy ourselves this evening as we build to the main event, the announcement of this year’s Michigan Contractor of the Year. While I don’t know who the winner is, I know that all of this year’s nominees had to adapt and be flexible to have come through the pandemic so widely revered.

ASAM ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP This year marks the ninth annual ASAM Scholarship. Founded in late 2012, ASAM joined Ferris State University and USI Insurance Services to create the ASAM Endowment and Scholarship fund. This endeavor was established by the ASAM Education Committee. The scholarship is one of the many ways that ASAM provides students a direct connection to trade contractors and suppliers in the region. Motivated by a mutual desire to equip students with the knowledge needed to produce a quality trade workforce in Michigan, Ferris State University’s College of Engineering Technology has formed a close bond with ASAM.

T

he CWDA of West Michigan was formed by three trade organizations (ASAM, ABC Western Michigan Chapter, and Home Builders Association) that want to encourage talented young people to put their hands and minds to work in the growing, exciting, and rewarding field of construction. Every year the CWDA gathers together commercial and residential construction industry professionals for the CWDA Rally. The rally celebrates the construction industry and raises funds to inspire and attract students. This boots-on-the-ground program provides hands-on construction training scholarships to young individuals who demonstrate a desire to join the construction industry. Applicants are screened for the coveted 16-24 slots. The training program consists of learning skills such as basic construction math, blueprint reading, using hand and power tools, safety, communication, and more. Additionally, students graduate with an OSHA 10-hour card, rough terrain forklift license, aerial lift license and a first aid/CPR card. Completion of the course results in upward of 20 companies interviewing these candidates. In the past, 80% of the graduating class has been successful in landing construction jobs in West Michigan. Sustaining and growing our construction industry directly impacts everyone in West Michigan. Your CWDA team is committed to providing construction career exploration, construction training, and preparing youth to join our ranks. This program directly impacts our manpower shortage with hands-on training and education. The ASAM board has voted to increase support and asks that you consider joining these efforts with your generous donations. For more information, visit WeBuildMI.com.

Winner of the 2010, 2013/2014, 2015/2016, 2017/2018 and the 2019/2020 MCOY Awards Trust in Our Trades We reaffirmed a crucial attribute of trust that we have built with our trade contractors. Key traits we had already been grateful for like trust and integrity were leveraged and amplified in 2020. The year presented new challenges not only to our industry, but also to our world and the people we work with each day. We deeply thank all the trades’ organizations for their service day in and day out and their commitment to building our community.

He eventually settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1933, the young entrepreneur founded Beckering Construction Company. From the beginning, Earl established a reputation for strong work ethics, personal service, quality craftsmanship and a hands-on management approach. In honor of Earl Sr.’s legacy, these qualities continue to be the trademark of our company. In 1962, under the leadership of Beckering’s son, Earl Jr., the company name was changed to Pioneer

Construction to reflect the innovative attitude and expanding services of the rapidly growing firm. In 1971, Earl’s son, Tom, took the reins of the company. Under his leadership, Pioneer Construction expanded to become one of the largest full-service construction companies in the Midwest.

We truly thank all the trade contractors for their unwavering effort and faith as they continued to deliver excellence and build with us. “I remember the first year we were invited to be part of the ASAM event, and we won that first year. Thank you ASAM for fantastic events and raising the bar in the construction industry. It’s truly been an honor to be in this room with this many great people. My dad

Our goal is to nurture trust, learning and growth for clients, trade contractors, and employees. or small family-owned businesses, getting the right succession plan in place can be a long, drawn-out undertaking. Just ask Marcia Elgersma. She and her husband, Al Elgersma, realized more than a decade ago that they needed to figure out a succession plan for Al’s Excavating Inc., the nearly fourdecade-old small business they co-own in Hamilton, Mich., about 10 miles southeast of Holland. At the time, they wanted to outline the roles their children would take on in the excavating company going forward. But that was in the year 2000 and despite their best intentions, the planning process ultimately ended unsuccessfully. “It just didn’t work at all,” said Elgersma, the company’s secretary and treasurer. “We didn’t understand the processes and we didn’t know how to determine who was Percentage of West capable of leading.” Michigan familyIn the meanowned businessses time, the Elgersmas with no succession plan, according to found it was easier the Family Owned to grow their comBusiness Institute. pany to $6 million in annual sales than it was to figure out the transition plan, she said. Marcia and Al Elgersma, the owners of Hamilton-based Al’s Excavating, were typical of many small family-owned business owners in that they lacked a formal succession plan to transition to the next generation of leadership. After a failed attempt to develop a plan, the company tapped a team of local advisers to develop a leadership strategy and succession plan that it plans to launch Dec. 1. PHOTO: KATY BATDORFF business consultants and did a deep dive into the makeup of the family and analyzed which members were qualified to hold the various leadership positions. Such delays in putting together a formal plan of succession are not uncommon among small and middle-market companies, experts say. In West Michigan, 81 percent of family-owned businesses lack a formal succession plan, according to the results of a study conducted by the Family Owned Business Institute (FOBI), a joint project of the Grand Valley State University Seidman College of Business and Western Michigan University’s Haworth College of Business. Simply having a succession plan in place is not really enough for most companies, sources said. Rather, families and other shareholders in the business should do a thorough analysis of the company itself and the different people who could take on leadership roles, said Kirk Koeman,

a partner at DWH LLC, a Grand Rapidsbased business consulting firm. Koeman was one of a handful of people to advise the Elgersmas as they put their plan together. “In the case of Al’s Excavating, it took two years to make changes in the company,” Koeman told MiBiz. “Typically, there is a mindset that the owners’ sons will just take over. In many middle-market companies, that’s not always feasible, and you don’t really know that until someone from the outside talks with people in the company. … These people can still be owners, but they don’t have to be managers.” During the two-year analysis of Al’s Excavating — during which time DWH served as general manager of the company so it could continue operating during a busy construction period — the research showed that members of the Elgersma family from both the second and third Continued on next page

eff Helminski, co-founder and managing partner of Auxo Investment Partners in Grand Rapids, successfully leveraged his atypical experience and path into the world of private equity in multiple deals last year. Helminski has a diverse professional background, including experience in manufacturing engineering, high-volume assembly operations management and real estate development. His firm, Auxo, now specializes in investing in and growing founder- and family-owned industrial, manufacturing and business services companies. While he has managed dozens of transactions involving hundreds of millions of dollars during his career, Helminski believes last year’s transactions stand out as significant in establishing Auxo’s partnership-based model and the firm’s closely-aligned relationship between investors and fund managers. With a fully subscribed fund, Helminski had the ability to invest in 10 to 15 companies in the first few years after building Auxo from scratch. Last year, Auxo

evaluated hundreds of opportunities and closed on several transactions, including deals for Prestige Stamping Inc. and Andrie LLC. “Both companies had a strong focus on people and culture with honest, hardworking, down-to-earth people throughout the organization from the shop floor to the C-suite,” said Helminski, the winner of the investor category in the 2019 MiBiz Dealmakers of the Year Awards. “The sellers of the businesses, both families, cared deeply about the legacy of the company, the employees and making sure they found a successor that was going to provide them with not only sustainable employment, but hopefully, greater opportunities going forward.” The businesses found a perfect fit in values and approaches with Auxo, according to Helminski. The October 2018 deal for Prestige Stamping was Auxo’s fifth acquisition in 13 months. The Michigan-based niche manufacturer of custom-engineered stampings for the fastener industry selected Auxo as the buyer even though the company was not the highest bidder, according to Helminski. The reason: The seller was concerned about the future of the company’s employees and younger generations of the founding family that remained in the business, which aligned better with Auxo’s values and longer-term investment approach. In February, Auxo acquired Andrie, a bulk marine transporter of specialty products including cement, liquid asphalt, light oil petroleum products, and calcium chloride throughout the Great Lakes. Andrie operates a fleet of 19 tugs and barges out of Muskegon, Helminski’s hometown. The company, a mature industrial business and “market leader in the niche that they serve within their sector,” checked important boxes for Helminski. The acquisition also followed the firm’s December 2017 deal to buy Metairie, La.based M/G Transport Services, an operator of inland barges. The two firms now operate as Auxo Marine, a newly formed platform company. When Helminski launched Auxo with partners Jack Kolodny and Fred Tedori, the team made “a very conscious decision” to be based in Grand Rapids. “Part of that was because the values of West Michigan align with our values, but also, to put us this close to a large number of the kinds of businesses that we’re interested in connecting with throughout the Great Lakes region,” Helminski said.

Being based in the same community as many family- or founder-owned businesses is important when the firm is communicating with a potential target, he added. “My background is not the prototypical path to being in the private equity investing world,” Helminski said. “When I’m having a conversation with a family that is thinking about this transition that is often partly emotional and partly financial, I can talk to the family and say ‘here’s my story, here’s my background, this is the way I grew up in West Michigan.’ It makes a difference.” Even so, specializing in the acquisition of family-owned businesses also comes with its own set of unique challenges and opportunities. “What’s interesting is when (the businesses) have been so successful and there’s a big enough end market that they could try and grow into that they often just haven’t done yet,” he said. “In knowing that they need to do certain things differently or

professionalize certain aspects of the business that haven’t yet been professionalized, or haven’t been developed into a more scalable function within the company, that’s going to take change.” Stabilizing long-standing, familyowned business cultures while at the same time growing profits is “one of the most difficult things” Auxo does. “It’s a delicate balancing act between these two seemingly competing interests of stability and maintaining that which is great, with changing enough to accomplish the growth at a higher rate than what they’ve historically done,” Helminski said. Pre-transaction, the firm researches not only a potential target’s financial viability but also its culture and talent. “We have a roadmap to be able to see what things are sacred and we want to really protect within the business, and what things can be done better if the company is going to grow and scale up beyond the point that they’ve achieved today,” he said.
