The American Subcontractors Association of Michigan (ASAM) welcomes you to the twelfth annual Michigan Contractor of the Year Awards (MCOY).

The award, by design, is not a “popularity contest.” Instead, it gives American Subcontractors Association of Michigan (ASAM) members an opportunity to nomi nate and recognize general contrac tors and construction managers who exhibit best practices, profes sionalism, and collaboration within Michigan’s trade contracting com munity. More significantly, the pro cess educates our general contractor friends about how trade contractors and suppliers view the partnerships that are formed through construc tion projects. Contractors are nomi nated based on the experience trade contractors have with the general contractors they work with. The goal of the MCOY Awards is to build trusting relationships. The end result is a community of top-notch contractors and trade contractors working as a team—with owners get ting everything they pay for and more. ASAM set out to make a difference through action and self-responsibility; the popularity of the MCOY event is evidence that members of the con struction industry have the same desire to play at a high level.

Communication - Questions and concerns are dealt with in a timely manner so as to keep the project moving forward. Regularly commu nicates candidly, openly, and profes sionally, shares successes and chal lenges to all of those involved in the project. Payment Terms - Clearly outlines and communicates contract pay ment terms & requirements. Proac tively communicates any payment delays. Recognizes the importance of cash flow to the trade contractors on the project. As project progresses, releases retainage in a timely fashion. Fights for reasonable trade contrac tor payment terms and holds owners accountable. Project Onsite Supervision - An experienced supervisor who under stands effective workflow. Creates a team approach with trade con tractors. Limits delays and wasteful sequencing, stacking, and accelera tion. Takes the lead in dealing with site challenges, professionally and in a timely manner, and treats individu als with respect and dignity. Provides sufficient supervisory manpower to meet project needs.

ASAM members evaluated nominees for performance in specific catego ries that are essential to the con tractor-trade contractor relation ship. Each member company scored nominees in a confidential, defined process encompassing the follow ing criteria: Administrative Proce dures, Bid Ethics & Practices, Com munication, Payment Terms, Project Onsite Supervision, Project Rela tionships & Collaboration, Quality Workmanship, Safety, and Schedule Coordination. Administrative Procedures - Clearly defines administrative procedures at the time of contract issue. Provides a contract and replies to RFI’s, bul letin quotes, and other change cor respondence in a timely manner, and requires all trade contractors to do the same. Does not expect the trade contractor to take unnecessary risks or make assumptions that may later prove false. Bid Ethics & Practice - Follows and ensures the integrity of the bid pro cess for both publicly and privately bid projects. Ensures consistency as it relates to the scope of work, plans, specifications, and contracts, and provides sufficient time to react to changes noted in addenda, RFI’s, and other communications. Does not knowingly push undue risk onto trade contractors. Respects confi dentiality of trade contractor quotes and follows fair post-bid procedures by not engaging in bid shopping.

4 2022-2023 MCOY AWARDS T here are good reasons why the Michigan Contractor of the Year (MCOY) Award has become such a popular event—and perhaps the biggest reason is that the awards aren’t just about celebrating those contractors who have discov ered the “winning formula.” Rather, they’re about improving the overall construction industry where the rest of us live and work. When the annual MCOY Awards were developed thirteen years ago, the emphasis was on how to improve working relationships between trade contractors and contractors. The underlying intent is to support those who are doing a great job—reinforc ing what they are doing while making it desirable for others to follow suit.

Project Relationships & Collab oration - Establishes a spirit of Welcome to the 12th MCOYAnnualAwards

Within the construction industry, this is Michigan’s premier event for recognizing general contractors and construction managers with a track record of best practices, professionalism, and collaboration with the trade contracting community. This prestigious award has tremendous meaning because it only goes to contractors who operate at the highest level. We are proud to have such strong general contractors and construction managers to work with year after year. A process and criteria that define excellence

First, I’d like to start by congratulating our eight nominees. These companies truly embody the spirit of MCOY—strong communication, professionalism, and worldclass Tonight’sworkmanship.theme,“The Game Evolves,” is all about adaptability. If we’ve learned anything these past two and a half years, it’s that when it comes to our industry, things are constantly changing. The world is always serving up new circumstances for us to react to and negotiate. Successful companies are the ones who can embrace these challenges and continue to seek out emerging opportunities. We also have an opportunity every year at MCOY. Not only to celebrate the best of best in West Michigan Construction, but to celebrate what makes the West Michigan Construction Industry so special. We have a uniquely collaborative culture here between general contractors and construction managers and their trade contractor partners, and MCOY helps us keep that culture alive. Tonight, and throughout the rest of the year. From the MCOY Nominee series events to the conversations we have with the GCs and CMs after every MCOY. MCOY fosters crucial conversations, and gives us valuable insight into how we can all continue to evolve in a positive direction together. Very much looking forward to spending the evening with you! John Turner, President, ASAM P.S. While there can only be one MCOY Award winner, the annual celebration is an opportunity to celebrate all of the companies that work year-round to improve our construction community. ASAM offers an impressive list of resources (such as the business practice interchange, construction advancement forum, safety initiatives, and other benefits) that are strengthened through the collaboration of our members. Whatever your goals in the construction industry, ASAM offers you a community to help you achieve them. You and your company have much to offer to ASAM as well. At this year’s MCOY Awards, let’s celebrate the success our community has already achieved and look forward to greater success together.

Most companies are blessed with steady work, and at the same time we find ourselves watch ing the market economy. FIRST COMPANIES

F irst Companies is a second-generation, family-owned construction management partner that has been rooted in the West Michigan community for more than 55 years. Our team proudly and passionately serves people with real estate, construction, and property management services, delivering high-quality spaces where businesses thrive. First Companies’ construction capabilities include new builds, remodels, and renovations of industrial and medical facilities, office and retail space, and recreational and mixed-use projects. Our work comes to fruition with the help of dozens of local contractors, many of whom have had relationships with First Companies since its inception. Buildings are our area of expertise, and people are our passion. We value our reputation for quality, integrity, and excellence in everything we do. We are proud to make West Michigan a more beautiful, engaging, and desirable place to live with the partnerships and projects we support.

O ur story began in 1891. Four young engineers in Grand Rapids, Michigan had a vision to build a great city. Their resumés were written in the lines of their hardened, calloused hands. Our founders cared about people, first and foremost, and established an employeeowned construction company that eventually became Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. (or O-A-K, as we call ourselves). Industry trends came and went, marketplace demands evolved, and O-A-K continually transformed. We believe the most successful companies are constantly adjusting to what they’ve learned. We’ve done a lot of adjusting since 1891. Today, we manage the building process, not just the construction itself. We have carried out that vision to build a great city in Grand Rapids, and have expanded into Kalamazoo, Michigan; Fort Myers, Florida; and Castle Rock, Colorado. At our core, we are culturally humble and driven. We imagine if we met those four young engineers today – 131 years later – they would tip their hats.

O riginally from the Netherlands, Earl Beckering Sr. worked his way to the United States of America as a carpenter aboard a ship. He eventually settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1933, the young entrepreneur founded Beckering Construction Company. From the beginning, Earl established a reputation for strong work ethic, personal service, quality craftsmanship, and a hands-on management approach. In honor of Earl Sr.’s legacy, these qualities continue to be the trademark of Pioneer Construction. In 1962, under the leadership of Beckering’s son, Earl Jr., the company name was changed to Pioneer Construction to reflect the innovative attitude and expanding services of the rapidly growing firm. In 1971, Earl’s son, Tom, took the reins of the company. Under his leadership, Pioneer expanded to become one of the largest full-service construction companies in the Midwest. Now, in the fourth generation of family ownership, Tim Schowalter has positioned the company as a recognized leader in sustainable building and construction technology while maintaining the heritage of quality construction delivered on-time and within budget. As the prime construction employer in West Michigan, Pioneer has a multi-talented workforce of over two-hundred people. Many team members have worked with the company for over 15 years.
