COMMUNITY ARTS M FA

The MFA in Community Arts program prepares artists to use their artmaking as a means of civic, youth, and community development, and/or to teach at the post-secondary level. 2 Community Arts / MFA Edgar Reyes: El Art Cart

The program provides students with a thorough grounding in theory and practice, beginning with coursework that highlights the relationship between the artist, art, and community. Real-world experience that integrates independent artmaking with community-based projects provides students with the opportunity to investigate how artists help communities articulate their own unique creative identity, and how these communities in turn inspire the students’ own creative expression. This is accomplished through dialogue with community members and leaders, policy makers, funders and nonprofit organizations, and professional community artists in concert with internship experiences, study of community arts theory and practice, and extensive studio work. Students develop proposals for and implement individual community arts projects in their first and second year. Graduates emerge as practicing artists, programmers, project managers, out-of-school teachers, and experts in the growing field of community arts, with some going on to teach at the college level.

PROGRAM FACILITIES & RESOURCES

An expansive, flexible set of spaces designed for collaboration with the community is the program’s home base at MICA PLACE, two miles from the Main Campus in East Baltimore. Students have access to the full range of the College’s studio artmaking resources for realizing their projects—including gallery space for exhibiting work produced in community. Over a long history as a leader in community arts, MICA has developed outstanding relationships with community organizations that offer opportunities for student fieldwork. WHO SHOULD APPLY

The MFA in Community Arts is designed for students with demonstrated ability in visual arts. Some experience in community-based work is a prerequisite. Additional studies in sociology, psychology, urban studies, or other related fields may further strengthen the application. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THIS TWO-YEAR, 63- OR 66-CREDIT PROGRAM VISIT:

The Seminar centers on student presentations about relevant issues and themes in contemporary art. Group critiques, an integral element of the Mount Royal curriculum, are facilitated by the director and one to two other artists-in-residence. The resources of Mount Royal extend beyond the walls of the school. Visits from artists and critics take on an intimate and casual feeling as dinners with the visitors continue the dialog, and often include other guests such as art collectors and dealers. Going further still, the program supplements students’ travel to New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC, to visit gallery and museum shows which have been hand selected by the director based in relationship to the work of each student. In this and other ways, graduates are prepared to add to the discourse surrounding contemporary art as exhibiting artists, faculty, and critics.

MICA’s MFA in Studio Art program is research-oriented and gives experienced artists the ability to integrate critical theory with their studio art practice and develop a professional body of work— along with the flexibility to maintain their ongoing careers while earning an MFA. Through a combination of independent work and intensive, six-week summer sessions at MICA, students in this program develop their unique personal voices and gain an expanded understanding of contemporary art and theory. While independent work in the studio is the focus of the program, residencies provide students with expanded critical dialogue and feedback through regular meetings with mentors, critical studies courses, professionalism courses, technical tutorials, group critiques, and meetings with visiting artists and critics. The first year encourages exploration and experimentation. Gradually, over the course of the next year, a specific course of inquiry begins to take form and the culminating year is spent developing the final body of work for the thesis exhibition. Study culminates in a fourth summer’s thesis exhibition at which time the students give an oral presentation in support of their work. Graduates emerge prepared to add to the discourse surrounding contemporary art and theory as exhibiting artists, faculty, and critics.

PROGRAM FACILITIES & RESOURCES

Expansive individual studios, located in MICA’s Fred Lazarus IV Center for Graduate Studies, as well as a broad array of academic resources and facilities are provided for the candidates while they are in residence during the summer sessions. The Master of Arts in Social Design is an intensive one-year, interdisciplinary, practice-based graduate program that prepares students to understand and address the challenges facing society as they grow their skills, examine the designer’s role and responsibility in society, and bring about social change through design. Students in the program strive to positively impact our world through collaborative, hands-on opportunities supporting a range of communityfocused issues and objectives. Building on MICA’s pioneering integration of art and design with civic engagement, the program allows students to participate in the same discovery and problem-solving processes implemented in the practice of design, but to use a community-focused approach. The program delivers its content through a variety of curricular and project-based learning opportunities in conjunction with visiting faculty and scholars from different disciplines and backgrounds. Students are challenged to understand the social, cultural, political, and economic factors surrounding social issues and are encouraged to work towards tangible solutions in collaboration with other institutions, organizations, and community members. Students emerge from the program with the investigative, problem-solving, and project management skills needed to address and affect social challenges. In the process, they develop their own voices as socially responsible designers and are prepared to assume leadership roles in the profession.

GRA DUA TE LIBERAL ARTS

INTENSIVE EXPLORATION IN THE LIBERAL ARTS— INCLUDING INTELLECTUAL HISTORY, CONTEMPORARY THEORY, ART HISTORY, SOCIAL SCIENCE, AND THE HUMANITIES— PROVIDES ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS WITH A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE AND THE SOCIAL, POLITICAL, AND HISTORICAL CONTEXTS FOR THEIR CREATIVE PRACTICES. Graduate liberal arts programming at MICA is uniquely designed to support the intellectual development of candidates for graduate degrees in art and design, and all graduate students at MICA develop a firm foundation in these areas. The liberal arts are at the heart of the educational experience at MICA and are essential to a creative leader’s understanding of the power, scope, tenor, and potential of his or her emerging creative voice. From the exploration of poetry to the investigation of the evolving global sociopolitical landscape, students develop an enduring connection to writing, research, critical and abstract thinking, and sound reasoning; they ask pertinent questions and pose, test, and prove radical theses. The broad range of liberal arts offerings allows graduate students to pursue their own interests and gain knowledge that expands their understanding of the world and enriches their creative practices. Topics focus on global modernisms and contemporanieties from aesthetics and critical theory to literature, cinema, site-specificity, politics, urbanism, ecology, and curatorial practice. In particular, programming in cultural studies, community-based practice, gender studies, philosophy, sociology, and history provides a context for students to explore diversity, multiple identities, social movements, and the value and influence of different cultures, peoples, and histories. Students gain insight into the systems and institutional structures that have informed the social, political, and economic development of communities and they acquire the intellectual tools to imagine a new future and work to initiate change. Class sizes in the seminars, lectures, and symposia are small and students are active participants in the learning experience. MFA students are required to take at least 12 credits in liberal arts, but many elect to take more. With the addition of one three-credit course, MFA students may choose to complete a concentration in Critical Studies of 15 credits to further their skills and abilities in writing and criticism as a way to complement and extend their practices in fine arts or design.

While pursuing their degree, MFA students at MICA have the opportunity to prepare for teaching at the college level through coursework and teaching experiences in the undergraduate classroom. The successful completion of three Graduate Teaching Internships and a graduate course, Philosophy and Pedagogy, earns an MFA student a Certificate in the College Teaching of Art and provides students firsthand preparation for teaching at the college level. Graduate Teaching Interns are paid a modest stipend to work closely with an experienced undergraduate faculty member to support the teaching of an undergraduate course. Graduate students are able to have up to two internships each semester of their graduate study. CONCENTRATION IN CRITICAL STUDIES

MFA students at MICA may build and sharpen their research and writing skills by pursuing a concentration in Critical Studies as part of their graduate study. Students who complete the concentration earn a mark of distinction that demonstrates their dedication to the history, theory, and criticism of art and design and may begin to work as writers, critics, editors, and researchers. Students are encouraged to develop publishable work through this program as a means of expanding and enhancing the creative and scholarly portfolios that they build during their time at MICA. The concentration requires 15 credits of coursework in the liberal arts and can be completed as part of the requirements for the MFA degree. Liberal Arts offerings, elective offerings, the certificate in college teaching of art, and the graduate concentration in critical studies affirm MICA’s prominence as a community of ideas that values advanced and thoughtful pedagogy relevant to a diverse and rapidly changing world.
