Regional industry leaders pave the way in infrastructure China and Macao are once again leading the way in regional infrastructure connectivity, with a fresh round of discussions soon to take place. Ministerial officials from across 50 countries and regions, leaders from over 30 international industry associations, and senior executives from 40 renowned financial institutions locally and worldwide will be converging in Macao for the fifth International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum (IIICF) in May this year. Seeking to address the vision and planning of topics ranging from regionally connected infrastructure, financial solutions and multi-form cooperation to physical connectivity and economic cooperation, the forum themed “Infrastructure Connectivity Provides New Impetuses for International Cooperation” is expecting another 1300 delegates from global leading contractors and service providers in attendance. Jointly organised by China International Contractors Association and Macao Economic Services, the upcoming IIICF will be taking place at the Venetian Macao on May 8-9, 2014.

recent years. Not resting on its laurels, the Macao SAR government has kicked off several large-scale infrastructural projects, including the urban light-rail, reclamation of marine lane, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Cross-Sea Bridge and the Hengqin Industry Park. It has also offered support to a number of private construction projects, which play a combined role in accelerating Macao’s economy by creating job opportunities and raising its competitiveness. Arising as a key programme of mutual cooperation between Mainland China and Macao to bolster the expo industry, the IIICF is an important part of an agreement signed between the Chinese Ministry of Commerce and the Secretary for Economy and Finance of Macao SAR Government in September 2012. In addition to bring the world closer to Macao, it has provided a wide platform for China to cooperate with other countries, while affording Macao with conveniences in gaining a more international expo industry. Upholding its reputation as a highend, professional and authoritative forum, the fifth IIICF has extended

invitations to government ministers and executives from leading enterprises in the infrastructure industry and multilateral financial institutions. It also seeks to attract up

Why participate?

The fifth IIICF will highlight the promotion of infrastructure markets and projects, and provide a platform for exhibiting, business talks, and business receptions to help participants connect and boost mutual cooperation. Participants will be able to: D Exchange ideas with government officials and industry leaders from across the world, while getting the latest industry information; D Deliver speeches or recommend speakers in line with theme and contents of the forum to share insights and experience; D Co-organise discussion panels or business talks for in-depth liaison with the target clientele and establish relationships for further partnerships; D Take part in the exhibition that runs concurrently with the forum and present services and products to potential customers; D Present infrastructure projects and carry out investment promotion activities; D Hold signing ceremonies to demonstrate the fruit of cooperation.

China sets the tone The IIICF is in line with recent attention given to regional infrastructure connectivity, which was one of the topics discussed at the 2013 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting last October. Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted the importance of a well-connected infrastructure across Asia Pacific and the need to construct sub-regional economic corridors to achieve integration. To boost and speed up infrastructure connectivity, he also called for the necessary establishment of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. This is not the first time the Chinese leadership has strongly emphasised on the need for regional infrastructure connectivity. Reform strategies on a national level, inclusive of pushing forward the construction of the Silk Road economic belt and marine Silk Road, were highlighted at the 3rd Plenary Session of the 18th Central Committee of the CPC. Its trade and diplomatic strategy also encompassed a need for preferred loans, special-purpose funds and financial institutions as a realistic support for infrastructure cooperation and connectivity. As a strong driving force in globalisation to accelerate economic growth and regional economic integration, infrastructure connectivity has been a rising trend elsewhere. The African Union passed the Program Infrastructure Development for Africa (PIDA) in January 2012, mapping out a series of cross-border and trans-regional infrastructure development programmes from 2012-2040 that required a total investment of US$360 billion. Similarly in Europe, a consensus was reached between the Council of the European Union, the European Parliament and the European Commission on the Connecting Europe Facility, which aimed to strengthen the connectivity of transportation, energy, telecommunications, and other sectors among EU markets with an investment of 29.3 billion Euros from 2014-2020.
