Program Note Wushu Duel was composed for Xiao Dong Wei and Jim VanValkenburg. Scored for Erhu and Viola the work is a duel/duo inspired by the practice of martial arts. In some ways, the martial arts tradition is not unlike the practice of music making. It is from these common links such as practice, harmony, control, perfection and peace that the work combines these two instruments in the fashion of a tournament between masters and of east meeting west. Both musicians being the musical representation of martial arts masters, display their great meditative control and skillful physical technique over their craft in musical combat. © 2013 Michael-Thomas Foumai.
