Program notes On June 4th, 1989, the Chinese government forcefully brought to an end a student led pro-democratic protest in Tiananmen Square. To this date, there are many conflicting accounts around the suppression of the protesters. While initial reports indicated that over 10,000 were killed, later official reports have estimated the death toll to be much less to as much as zero casualties. The true number remains a mystery. While some reforms have manifested, the topic, known as the Liù-Sì Túshā or June Fourth Massacre remains a forbidden topic in Mainland China. Due to strong censorship within China, historical records have begun to change and for many of the younger generation, the incident has been erased, completely rewritten or re-interpreted. All media, film and literature regarding the incident have been banned. In 2006, students from Peking University, many of whose students participated in the 1989 protest, were asked to view photos and film of the famous “Tank Man,” a protestor halting a parade of tanks a day after the incident.” Students could not identify what was happening in the photos and alleged it to be a parade or form of artwork. Having never lived through the incident, the experience can only remain in the imagination of the composer. While I have strived to create a work that does not criticize the event, it is difficult to reconcile the strong emotions associated with human rights, politics and the loss of life. My aspiration to compose a work on this subject stems not only from my parentage but also from being compelled to express the tragedy of loss and to explore the bravery and brutality of human behavior. I have accepted that my personal feelings on the incident have in some way shaped the piece. The work is scored for solo violin, chorus and large orchestra and employs text and music from the Chinese National Anthem as well as text from two other Chinese poets connected to Tiananmen Square. The conception of the work is based on creating an enclosed aural experience, with the audience at center. Offstage ensembles are placed around the hall to envelop the audience in an artificial “square.” The orchestral and choral forces do not represent singular identities however the solo violin is symbolic as leader or voice that invigorates the masses at large. The work is divided into four movements of which exist six subsections. I. Qǐlái! (Arise!) The work begins with a series of silent episodes that are violently interrupted by savage percussive flourishes. The chorus gradually materializes from a thick obscure texture into the emergence of a singular pitch. The explosive interruptions persist as the chorus and strings gradually intensify until the chorus cries out “Qilai” (Arise). The build up leads to the entrance of the solo violin employing abrasive gestures in a dance-like dialogue between chorus and orchestra. The chorus continues to invigorate the orchestra to rise leading to a climatic cadence. II. Xiāngxìn (We Believe) Beginning with an expressive melody in the violin, the chorus recites the creed-like “We Believe” by poet Wang Dan. As the orchestra gradually re-enters in sparse orchestration, the violin comments with violent strumming. The chorus proceeds to sing the text with passages interweaving with solo violin and strings. III. Qiánjìn (March On!) A second climatic episode harkens a quasi violin cadenza. Referencing the crazed gestures from the first movement, a tripartite duel between onstage/offstage percussion and the recitation of Wang’s poems develops into the resurgence of the explosive episodic gestures at the beginning. Gradually fragments of the Chinese National Anthem begins to ascend, although the orchestral forces adamantly try to suppress the rise of the Anthem, the solo violin leads the orchestra and chorus to unify the Anthem leading to a brutal and savage resolution. IV. Qín àidài māmā (Good Mother) The final movement takes fragments from an anonymous poet, the poem is entitled “I’m Calling You, Mother.” A Hymn like melody, the violin carries a bittersweet theme with the chorus pleading to their mother to heed her children’s cries leading to a final outburst to rise.

I’m Calling You, Mother Anonymous The following poem was written by a medical student in Changsha on June 9, 1989 and given to Andrea Warden. The poem was accompanied by a note: “On your departure, all I have to give you is a passionate heart dedicated to fighting for democracy and freedom, I’m hopeful that my country will become strong and prosperous, and I hope that you and I, my teacher, will meet again one day in a world that democratic and free.” Good mother, why do you close your eyes so tightly? I hear your heart beat like thunder Why do you hold everything in? Your heart will be destroyed by the sound of thunder The children you raised will have no place to rest The mountains and rivers you embrace will turn red with fresh blood Why do you close your eyes so tightly?
