DUNGENESS SPIT HOSPICE SEQUIM_WASHINGTON
The Dungeness Spit is located on the north-western tip of Washington State. It is currently the largest spit formation in the United States (5.5 miles). A spit land formation is the geomorphological event caused by waves hitting the shore at oblique angles. This event is followed by deposition ultimately causing the formation. The spit offers a unique variety of phenomenological experiences related to air and water; two elements that begin to describe human existence.During a brief visit to the Dungeness Spit, evidence of air and water had made its presence known through a series of bodily experiences. The senses became extraverted and the mind relaxed. The dull roar of incoming waves, followed by their whisphering departure focused the mind on rhythms of breath, movement, and life. The conceptual basis for this project aims to simplify ‘being’ and ‘living’ in order to appreciate these phenomenological experiences. Palliative care in the form of a hospice program was chosen to further investigate the concept and site. The investigation led to a series of comparisons between the vestige of waves and humans. The waves contribute energy to the spit, carrying thousands of tons of sediment annually. People contribute energy and time to the ones that surround them during a lifetime. These instances are arguably only moments, unlike the evidence which continues to perpetuate through time. As the project matured, the emphasis became more about the surrounding environment and less about the prominence of the architecture. Focus on form was replaced with attention to light, air, and sounds eminating from the site.
