W

ell summer may not be quite as glorious as the last couple of years... yet. But regardless, it’s time to get out and about. Whether to keep the kids entertained, for a change of scenery or just for an ice cream, we’ve got it covered in this month’s edition. We put a spotlight on Kenilworth, a small and beautiful town located in Warwickshire, often overlooked as a place to visit due to its close proximity to Stratford, Warwick and Leamington, but with its historic castle, Elizabethan Gardens and diverse range of independent shops, cafés and restaurants it’s the perfect place for a trip out. We also take a closer look at Malvern in Worcestershire this month; a local hub packed with independent shops, galleries, bakeries and cafés set amongst the world famous Malvern Hills, great for those of you wishing to take in the views and work up an appetite. We look at the best places in the region for al fresco dining and for those days when the weather is perfect for cracking the barbecue out at home we have spoken to some fine local butchers and hear how Field and Flower can deliver prizewinning meat directly from their farm to your door.

We also caught up with hair stylist Matthew Curtis for some tips on summer up-dos and how to keep your hair healthy when the sun shines and some menu ideas for how to eat clean from nutritionist Mel Taffs. Undo all that good work by checking out this month’s wine article from Laura Clay and our feature on local ice cream producers who are going from strength to strengtheverything’s ok in moderation, right? Make sure you check out our website and Facebook page to keep up-to-date with all of the local stories, features and events going on. I would also like to take this time to wish our senior copy editor Lucinda Bunn all the best for her new challenge as she heads back to university to study for a Masters degree and to say a big thank you for all of the hard work over the years, we couldn’t have got here without you. On behalf of the team, have a great July and we look forward to seeing you all again in August. www.edgemagazine.org

ang out the bunting, summer’s here! .... And where better to spend it than your own garden? We love our garden, especially at this time of year and really do view it as another room in our house. From lazy summer days relaxing on a sun lounger, seeking shade under a parasol or late night BBQs with friends, it’s all about making the most of your outdoor space.

14

www.edgemagazine.org

Being in the garden is all about relaxation so maximise the use of your outdoor space as an additional room and invest in some fabulous garden furniture. There are many styles to choose from, always invest in quality and help justify the cost by choosing materials that look equally good indoors, woods, rattans, that way you have furniture that’s versatile in conservatories & kitchens too and can help

you relive those long Summer days when Autumn starts to arrive. Make sure the table you choose is large enough to take a place setting for each person and still leave room in the centre for such items as salad bowls & wine glasses. Whilst China and glassware looks super stylish there are some equally attractive acrylic ranges now if the party is likely to get a little exuberant and why shouldn’t it? String lights and some elegant lanterns can really bring your patio to life and soften everything with some oversized scatter cushions and lightweight summer throws for when the sun sets. We share many mutual clients with local garden design and landscaping business Isola Garden Design (www. isolagardendesign.co.uk) and Director James Brash is seeing an increasing demand in people wanting an outside space that they will love for years to come. ‘Sorting out the garden’ has sometimes been an afterthought when moving into a new house or renovating an existing one. Nowadays there is a lot of media attention on gardens. Sunday supplements showcasing celebrity gardens, programmes like Gardeners’ World which is no longer just about growing carrots and eradicating slugs but also focuses on the aesthetic potential of an outside space. The extensive television coverage of shows such as Chelsea and Malvern has captured the imagination of so many people and, of course, the ubiquitous ‘make over’ shows have all highlighted this important part of a home. Many of our clients are now turning their attention to the garden as a project in its own right as they would when re-designing a kitchen or bathroom. The building trade is booming again, as is the trend for contemporary glass extensions and bi-fold doors. Beautiful open plan and light rooms are being created which naturally draw the eye to the outdoors. We have also had some fantastic weather in recent summers and the combination of these factors has given the garden a new found importance. Our clients not only want to enjoy their garden in the summer but they want it to look good all year round; as if it were another room in the house or a theatre set. ‘ So, keep everything crossed for good weather....although now you’ve got the ambience just right, you’ll hardly notice if the temperature is not all it should be. Think, klink, drink pink Thoughts on rosé wine Laura Clay

A

s I write, the heating is on and I have a warming cuppa at my side. But such is the British weather a few days ago I was cracking open a bottle of rosé and enjoying it in the sun. Sales of rosé always peak in the summer months, which seems almost too ridiculously obvious to comment on, but why do we associate it with sunny times? Sure it needs to be chilled and is refreshing, but isn’t that the same with white wine and we drink that at any time of the year? Granted, many of the foods recommended to accompany a rosé are lighter dishes such as salmon, prawns and strawberries but I eat those throughout the year. Actually in fact, figures suggest that we are drinking rosé all year round, still sales climax when it is warm. There is of course another very good reason for enjoying pinks from May to September. Generally, rosés need to be drunk young to be at their most lively and vibrant best; new vintages from Europe are released onto the market in April/ May and, as a rosé producer said to me, they ‘hope to have run out by October’. But then, guess what, the wines from the Southern Hemisphere will be hitting our shelves so we can enjoy rosé all year and there is no reason why we shouldn’t. Whatever sceptics may say about rosé wines, and some people are incredibly sniffy and rude about it, it can most definitely be a serious wine, with finesse and complexity, and an ability to refresh and entice from the seductive colour all the way through to savouring the last zingy drop on the tongue. And if the wine is simple and refreshing, so long as there is enough flavour and acidity, well, you know, sometimes that’s exactly what you want.

Colours and styles vary depending on the red grape variety used, how much time the must (pressed grape juice) spends on the skins and whether the wine is fermented or aged at all in oak barrels. The palest pink rosés are made from Grenache, Syrah and other grapes grown in the Côtes de Provence where rosé is the area’s raison d’être. You’ll generally find a more crushed-strawberry or cherry colour from the Rhône Valley and Languedoc-Roussillon rosés. Pinot Noirs from Sancerre and Burgundy, Bulgaria and England; Cabernet and Merlot from Bordeaux; Touriga Nacional from Portugal and Tempranillo from Spain; Cinsault and Mourvèdre blends from Bandol as well as rosés from South Africa, Chile, Australia and New Zealand – all have their own individual style, what unites them is that, almost always, the best are dry. Here’s some to look out for: Château La Sauvageonne, Coteaux du Languedoc, Gerard Bertrand £12.99 from Majestic

The festival will include 50 stalls offering delicious food and drink from local businesses and selected specialist producers, cookery demonstrations and master class workshops by a variety of well-established chefs. Why not join one of the food and drink matching sessions and learn more about pairing different cheeses with beer, wine and cider?

18

www.edgemagazine.org

Live music by local bands, fun street entertainment, competitions and fun activities will ensure that there is something for all the family at this celebration of all things tasty. The event will be taking place throughout the pedestrianised city centre and admission is free. A brand new event this year is set to get taste buds going when the Worcester Foodie Fortnight will take place at various venues throughout Worcester city centre from 27th July – 9th August 2015. Local and regional ‘foodies’ can enjoy two weeks of taste next month by exploring Worcester’s fantastic food and drink offer at quality local restaurants, cosy cafés, stylish bars and traditional pubs. Special £5 and £10 taster menus, a food and drink trail, sampling activities, breakfast and lunch club offers, competitions and more will be on the plate for the avid foodie. Nadja von Dahlen, Worcester BID Marketing & Events Manager, said “We want people to discover and experience our fantastic city centre food and drink outlets, whether it’s at the Worcester Foodie Festival or venturing into businesses for a tasty treat during the Foodie Fortnight. F

From field&flower

ield&flower is an online multi-award winning meat delivery service based in the heart of the Somerset countryside. Founded five years ago by good friends James Mansfield and farmer James Flower, the boys deliver free-range and grass-fed meat including beef, pork, lamb, chicken and wild game straight from their small traditional farms fresh to homes all over the UK. Their uniquely tailored service allows you to choose exactly what you want in your box and offers the flexibility for you to manage all of your delivery dates too – so you only receive an order as and when you’d like one. Offering complete traceability, James and James only work with one poultry farmer, one lamb farmer, one pork farmer and one other beef farmer (James Flower being their primary) all based in the West Country, guaranteeing to let you know exactly where your meat has come from with every box, as well as notifying you of the breed of the animal, along with its kill and butcher date. Exceptional animal welfare is the top priority for all five farms, ensuring all of their animals are raised slowly with plenty of space to roam freely for their entire lives as well as enjoying a completely natural diet. And this considerate attention certainly doesn’t go unnoticed in the taste of the meat. It’s thanks to their diet and upbringing that the meat is full of artistic-like marbling making it so rich and bursting with brilliant flavour when likened to grain-fed products, not to mention comes with an abundance of health benefits that simply cannot be compared. Grass-fed meat has a much higherquality fat content, with more Omega 3’s and CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid), and is jam packed with antioxidants and up to four times more Vitamins A and E. But that’s not all, field&flower’s meat is dry aged too. Their flagship beef products for example are hung for a minimum of 28 days on the bone,

24

www.edgemagazine.org

a technique that the supermarkets and a lot of butchers simply cannot match because of the time and cost it takes. But it’s definitely worth it. Dry aging the meat before its butchered breaks down the fibres tenderising for that melt-in-the-mouth sensation and further allows for any water to drain, so you’re left with only meat and a final product that won’t shrink in your pan! The lower water content (typically 30% less than supermarket meat) means that field&flower products are perfect for freezing too – there isn’t the crystallization that causes the meat to spoil affecting the flavour and texture, we promise, you really won’t notice the difference when eating their meat fresh or from frozen. Of course there are accolades, press features and high calibre testimonials to match such a world class product too. Named The Independent’s ’Best Meat Box’, they have also won three Taste of the West awards, the Observer Food Monthly Runner-Up award, and crowned BBC Good Food Champions. Not to mention a stream of top chef’s and sports stars lending their support too; “Top quality” says Jamie Magazine, “Superb” says Delia Online and “Truly remarkable” quotes Masterchef’s John Torode to name but a few, as well as England rugby player Anthony Watson, “I never fail to be incredibly impressed with the quality,” and New Zealand rugby player Nick Evans, “There are no better quality meat products than field&flower”. And with renowned journalists knocking on their farm door too, from The Telegraph to The Daily Mail and plenty of leading magazines in between including Grazia, Crumbs and Good Housekeeping all featuring their fantastic products, it’s no wonder why the latest edition of Edge Magazine has called upon the boys to cater for their special Al Fresco dining this month! My food Diary

A day in the life of a nutritionalist

Mel Taffs

F

or me, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It determines how well your body burns fat and kick starts your metabolism, making it vital to get what you need in the morning spot on. Here are just some of the breakfast options that I choose from. Porridge with rice or almond milk, 2 tablespoons of Greek yogurt and a handful of berries. Greek yoghurt (4 tablespoons) handful of raw unsalted nuts, handful of berries. 1 organic egg (poached), 1 slice of rye bread toasted with a light spread of butter. Omelette: 3 organic eggs, 100 grams of goat's or Edam cheese and a splash of rice or almond milk. 100 grams of smoked salmon with 2 organic eggs scrambled. My mid- morning snacks. 100 grams of chicken and half an avocado. 100 grams of turkey and a handful of walnuts. 100 grams of mackerel and a handful of pecan nuts. Carrot batons with hummus. 1 boiled egg with a handful of walnuts. 100 grams of salmon with a handful of pine nuts. Banana with a handful of unsalted nuts. Lunch times prove difficult for a lot of people because it can be extra bother to prepare something healthy at work but these healthy options will keep you feeling fresh and alert whilst satisfying those midday hunger pangs.

Goat’s cheese salad: 4 handfuls of curly kale or spinach, sprinkling of goat’s cheese, half an avocado, radishes sliced, sprinkling of sunflower or pumpkin seeds and a drizzle of olive oil. 30 www.edgemagazine.org

Soup: either homemade or in a cardboard carton. Tuna salad: 100 grams of either grilled tuna or drained tinned tuna in water, 3 handfuls of spinach or curly kale, red or green peppers, green beans, steamed broccoli and olive oil to dress. Scrambled eggs: 3 organic eggs, splash of milk, 1 spring onion, half a tablespoon of unsalted butter and a handful of spinach. Lettuce wrap: 4 leaves of iceberg lettuce, 4 slices of roast turkey, half a sliced cucumber and dress with hummus. Pan fried prawns: 100 grams of prawns, 3 handfuls of spinach, green beans and olive oil to dress. I slice of rye bread and a light spread of butter. My mid-afternoon snacks. Peanut or nut butter on rye bread. 100 grams of feta cheese, cucumber slices in a wholemeal wrap. 100 grams of turkey with cherry tomatoes. 100 grams of mackerel and half an avocado. The evening meal: this shouldn’t be a chance to gorge at home, but instead a way to round off a healthy day. Whatever you eat for dinner will have a direct impact on how you feel the next day. Remember that. Vegetable soup: Either homemade or from a cardboard carton served with rye toast and a light spread of butter. Roasted butternut squash: Place butternut squash in a baking tray with a handful of spinach, broccoli florets, a drizzle of oil and when cooked, a sprinkle with feta cheese. Steak salad: 1 steak grilled, 2 handfuls of watercress, 2 handfuls of rocket, cherry tomatoes, whole avocado and sweet potato mash.

Cajun chicken: 1 chicken breast, Cajun spice mix, 4 mashed sweet potatoes, handful of peas, diced red onion and red pepper. Slit the chicken rub in Cajun spice mix and cook. Boil sweet potatoes and then mash. Add the peas, onion and red pepper to the sweet potato and serve with the chicken placed on top. Baked aubergine: 1 whole aubergine, 2 handfuls of rocket, black olives, feta, olive oil. Bake the aubergine then cut up placing the feta cheese, rocket, olives on top drizzle with olive oil. Salad nicoise: grilled tuna steak, 3 handfuls of spinach, sliced red onion, cherry tomatoes, 1 boiled egg, black olives and olive oil to dress.

Carrot and cod: grilled cod, carrots, broccoli, 3 handfuls of spinach, 1 organic egg, unsalted butter. Boil and mash the carrots with unsalted butter, boil the spinach and poach the egg.

If you feel hungry have a green salad with meals which consists of 2 handfuls of rocket, a handful of spinach, mange tout, chopped spring onion, green beans, olives and drizzle with olive oil.

Cod and mushy peas: grilled cod fillet, 3 handfuls of soy beans, unsalted butter, handful of fresh mint, sweet potato olive oil. Steam the soy beans then mash with butter and add the mint for flavour. Cut sweet potato into chunks drizzle with olive oil and bake.

I also have 3 cups of green tea daily, unlimited water and 2 cups of coffee with almond milk. Alcohol: I would choose red wine or vodka with mineral water and a slice of lemon.

Salmon salad: smoked salmon, watercress, spinach, cherry tomatoes, sliced red onion, half an avocado, olive oil. Place all ingredients together and drizzle with olive oil. Serve with sweet potatoes baked or rye bread.

Cravings for sweet foods? Then I will have a spoon of nut butter or 2 squares of 70% dark chocolate. Want to change bad eating habits for life? Lose weight and keep it off? Need tips on exercising? Email: melanietaffs7@gmail.com / call 07792421080. July 2015

Deliveroo

Food you love, delivered to your door Megan Ace

G

et amazing food from an incredible selection of local restaurants, delivered in an average of just 32 minutes. ‘We want to make it easy and feasible for people to use our service daily, not just for special occasions. That's why we only charge a small, flat £2.50 fee per delivery.’ I managed to grab 2 minutes of Deliveroo's Regional Manager Jacob Lourie’s time and here’s what he had to say about the rapidly expanding business. Can you tell me a little bit of your background and what inspired you to get started in food business? My background is from the online offers industry, so it›s been nice to move over into a more food-orientated role. I love great food, and I also love

32

www.edgemagazine.org

trying different cuisine types. One of my favourite parts of the job is to taste the meals from different restaurants, and Birmingham has a great selection. Have you seen a shift in people wanting the convenience of delivered food and less so for eating out? Definitely, amongst all generations people are beginning to find new ways to get food in more and more convenient ways, and it›s great because it›s allowing people to experience great restaurants when they may previously wouldn›t be able to. Eating out at restaurants is still great, and there's definitely something you can't beat about being in a great restaurant, but there are so many times when eating in is more fun!

Who do you currently deliver for? Asha's, Chung Ying, Hamburgers by Anderson, Bodega, Shogun Sushi, The Plough, and many many more. We have 80 restaurants in total in Birmingham. We work with some chains, including Handmade Burger Co, GBK and Carluccio's Do you also work with independent eateries? Yeah, 90% of our restaurants are independent. We love working with great independents, especially those who do fantastic food but are a little less well known, as we can really work with them to boost their exposure. You have a great social media following. How did you build that? We have had a presence in the city for the last 3 months, and we work closely with our restaurants to boost each other's social presence.

See the whole drama unfold. Test drive the all-new Audi TT Roadster. It’s not just features like the electric hood that opens or closes in 10 seconds. Nor the Audi Virtual Cockpit and optional Super Sports seats with head level heating. In fact, there’s a whole sky full of reasons to experience the sheer drama of open-top driving – on a test drive in the all-new Audi TT Roadster. Call your local Audi Centre to book a test drive.

If you had a three-course meal delivered, what would it be and where from? I’ll allow three separate eateries, if needs be. I couldn't possibly pick between all our restaurants, I'd get in trouble!! What’s next? More cities! Leicester is coming before the end of June, Derby and solihull in August, and then Worcester and maybe one more in September! restaurants@deliveroo.co.uk www.deliveroo.co.uk

Name a sweet to commemorate the Battle of Evesham

The 750th anniversary of the Battle of Evesham has proved inspirational for a popular Evesham sweet shop. Mr Chill’s Emporium is well known for developing unique sweets in recognition of Worcestershire’s historic heritage. His latest recipe is a wild strawberry and mint combination - which will officially launch for the anniversary of the battle next month. Mr Chill is asking local people to visit the shop before July 17 with suggestions for naming the new creation. The winner will be given a three kilo jar of the sweets. David Chill explains: “Wild strawberries were widely enjoyed at the time of the Battle of Evesham. My new sweet will have a soft mint centre, to reflect the popularity of the herb in the thirteenth century”.

One Festival of Food & Two Weeks of Taste in Worcester Visitors will be in for a treat with a multi - Michelin award-winning chef headlining the Worcester Foodie Festival in August. Following last year’s inaugural Festival the Worcester BID led event will return to the city centre on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd August with Jean-Christophe Novelli taking centre stage. The ‘nation’s favourite French chef’ will be running free cookery demonstrations on the main stage in the High Street on the Saturday. The festival will include 50 stalls offering delicious food and drink from local businesses and selected specialist producers, food and drink matching sessions, cookery demonstrations and master class workshops by a variety of well-established chefs. Live music, street entertainment, competitions, free face painting and fun activities will make sure that there is something for all the family at this celebration of all things tasty. The event will be taking place throughout the pedestrianised city centre and admission is free. A brand new event this year is set to get taste buds going when the Worcester Foodie Fortnight will take place in Worcester city centre from 27th July – 9th August 2015.

Building on last year’s successful Festival, local and regional ‘foodies’ can enjoy two weeks of taste next month by exploring Worcester’s fantastic food and drink offer at quality local restaurants, cosy cafés, stylish bars and traditional pubs. Special £5 and £10 taster menus, a food and drink trail, sampling activities, breakfast club offers, competitions and more will be on the plate for the avid foodie. We want people to discover and experience our fantastic city centre food and drink outlets, whether it’s at the Worcester Foodie Festival or venturing into businesses for a tasty treat during the Foodie Fortnight. Get hands on with history At Kenilworth Castle this summer

F

or the perfect way to entertain your little history hunters this summer holiday, look no further than Kenilworth Castle & Elizabethan Garden in Warwickshire. Take the whole family to the English Heritage run Castle for a summer packed with time-travelling adventures to inspire young minds. They can let their imaginations run wild as they marvel at jousting knights, learn to curtsey like a medieval princess, and experience the thrill of a castle under siege – all at one of England’s greatest ruined castles. The holidays kick off with Kenilworth’s biggest event of the year – a brand new Medieval Festival on 18th & 19th July. An authentic medieval joust and knights’ tournament are at the heart of the festival. Teams of knights and squires will compete in challenges of skill and strength in spectacular arena shows in this fast-paced sporting event. This is a real competition with pride and victory at stake. With hundreds of medieval characters setting up camp in the castle grounds, there’s much more to the weekend than armour-clad competition. Expect jesters, falconry, live

46

music, encampments of medieval townsfolk in every area of the castle, hobby horse jousting for young (and young at heart) knights, authentic food and drink, a bustling medieval marketplace and more historic fun and games than ever before. Every day throughout August, the castle will come alive with historical high jinks for young explorers to enjoy. At weekends there will be quests, storytelling and characters to meet – whilst each week will see the start of a different themed adventure. Children will love discovering a treasure trove of Medieval Toys and Games from 3-7 August, being transported back in time to Kenilworth’s past as a party palace in Terrific Tudors from 10 – 14 August, and joining the castle’s Victorian Archaeologists to unearth some buried secrets in Awesome Archaeology from 17 – 21 August. Budding young knights and princesses can even practise their curtsies and combat skills when they sign up to the Knights & Princesses Academy from 24 – 28 August.

The summer holidays will finish with a bang as over the bank holiday weekend the castle will be under Siege! With battle camps on opposing sides of the rebellion, intrepid time-travellers can experience a siege from both within the castle walls, and attacking from the mere. Expect flaming siege machines, massed ranks of attacking troops, and a truly historic day out the whole family will enjoy. Kenilworth Castle is open from 10am – 6pm every day throughout the summer. Delicious treats to fuel historic days out are available in the Stables Café, and a lively audio tour brings the past to life.

The Fellows guide to auctions

V

isiting an auction house can provoke anxiety in a first time bidder.

Will an unintended twitch in the halls of a London auction house leave you working out how to pay for an Old Master? Or will you be standing in a draughty warehouse trying to decipher a string of bids relayed in a high speed monotone? Thankfully the reality is much less intimidating, and modern auction houses like Fellows, who are based in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, are fun and friendly places. Auction dos and don’ts Do your maths. Decide the maximum you want to pay for each piece, and stick to it. Getting caught up in auction frenzy is all too easy and you could find yourself bidding far more than you'd planned. Don't forget to factor in the buyer's premium - an additional fee paid by the winning bidder to the auction house. Normally this is a percentage (15-30 per cent) added on to the final hammer price. Do jump in when your item comes on the block. Auctions move fast. If you wait, the hammer may come down before you've worked up the courage to make a bid. Don't miss the preview. You need to check any antiques and try on jewellery or watches you plan to bid for! Fellows holds viewing days where you can call in to the saleroom without an appointment to view lots for a specific auction. Check www.fellows.co.uk to make sure you have the right date, or if you can’t travel to the saleroom, contact the department to ask questions and view detailed condition reports and 360° images in the online catalogue. Do register to bid and get a paddle number for the auction. You can't participate without one. Don't get into in a bidding war just because you're feeling competitive. If you beat another bidder, you may end up wishing you'd lost once you're stuck with paying far more than you planned. Do make sure you want to buy. If you make the winning bid, you're committed to complete the purchase.

48

www.edgemagazine.org

Don't put in your maximum too soon. The auctioneer will increase the price incrementally until the bids run out. Alternatively, you can place a commission bid before the auction Do look at the types of bid you can place. Commission (or absentee) bids are maximum bids which the auctioneer places on your behalf; handy if you can’t make the auction in person, but does mean you can’t retaliate. Telephone bids are an alternative to travelling to the saleroom, an experienced member of staff will call you before your lot is due to be sold, and relay the bids to you over the phone. Live bidding on online platforms is also a very popular way to buy auction trinkets, you can hear what’s going on in the saleroom through live video and audio, and will know immediately if you have won your lot from anywhere in the world which has an internet connection. “What’s it worth?” Free valuations Fellows have built up long-term relationships with clients by providing unrivalled customer service to meet the needs of each individual; whether you are searching for a piece of wedding jewellery or a vintage wristwatch. Antiques Roadshow style valuation days are held at locations around Worcestershire and the West Midlands, most recently at the beautiful Belfry Hotel in Sutton Coldfield, and The Arden in Stratford upon Avon, as well as Aston Villa Football Club. Call in with your unwanted antiques, jewellery and watches to find out the history and value of your item. Visit the website to view the diary of these external valuation days, or pop into the office on Wednesdays from 10am-4pm to speak to a specialist. Buying and selling items at Fellows could not be simpler; along with the helpful team, the firm has top quality salerooms and developed technology for online bidding. If you are a collector, vendor, or someone who is curious about the world of auctions, you can participate with complete confidence at Fellows. Visit www.fellows.co.uk to view auction catalogues for sales coming up over the next few weeks, or call 0121 212 2131 for more information.

Lucinda Bunn

or For Lorna and Paul O’Toole, interior design is more than creating a beautiful home. It’s about bringing your aspirations to life and making your home, well, ‘euphoric’.

With 20 years of experience in interior design, Lorna has built a reputation for her creativity, unique ideas, attention to detail and interpreting her clients’ personal style. Now, with the help of her husband Paul, who is a master joiner by trade, the team at Euphorium Design Consultancy offer bespoke interior design solutions and a comprehensive service from concept to installation. As a luxury design agency, Lorna and Paul have had nationwide and international success having worked on a range of top-end new build developments, prestigious private clients, celebrities’ houses and holiday homes. ‘We’re known predominately for working with developers to create unique show homes that are ‘different from the norm’, explains Lorna, ‘but we also love to design residential developments for private clients too. So much of what we do depends on building a personal relationship with our clients – you really have to get to know someone to interpret their lifestyle and what inspires them, to create a beautiful yet practical and functional design space’. Each process begins with a consultation where Lorna and Paul can visit your home and discuss ideas. A design concept and scheme is then created, bespoke to every project and individual based on their brief. Design boards, technical specification and floor plans, which show every element of the scheme in detail are then presented to each client, who has complete sign off and then you are well on the way to the creation your perfect home. Paul continues, ‘The thing that sets us apart is the fact that together we provide a complete service, from initial brief, to concept, trend forecasting, design specification, supply and fit. We also project manage everything which relieves our clients of any stress. We offer both full house schemes and individual rooms design such as kitchens and bathrooms, which are my speciality. We also offer extensions, conservatories and bi-fold door installation. Most of the products in Lorna’s designs are bespoke and I also make many of the furniture pieces too, making the majority of what we create, totally individual’. SUN-KISSED TRESSES

At Matthew Curtis Hair Design

S

ummer is a great time to work your hair into practical up-dos, embrace beachy waves and get those gorgeous golden natural highlights. But it’s as important to protect your hair from all the swimming and sunbathing and Matthew Curtis and his team have some great tips for low-maintenance summer hair that’s on trend too. Braids are perfect for the summer. You can braid your hair, leave the house and you don’t have to give it a second thought. Braids keep your hair out of your face and set it too. Here’s how you can recreate these catwalk styles.

Mohican braids at Shore Road by Pooja SS15 Collection Show Step1 - Start off by applying TRESemme oil to damp hair and blow dry the hair smooth creating a sleek finished look Step 2 -using a soft bristle brush, brush smooth the hair on each side of the braid low into a tight pony on either side and secure with elastic. Step 3 - Section off the top of your head braiding down the middle from the front of the hair line to the nape of the neck and then attach the 2 sections from the ponytails and continue to Dutch plait the hair (an inside out plait- taking the sections under instead of over) and braid all the way to the hairline securing in place with a snag band. Step 5 - Twist the plaits into themselves and pin in place creating a low chignon into the nape of the neck. Step 6- Finish with a TRESemme Freeze hold spray. TRESemme smooth and silky shine spray is perfect to get a glossy feel to this look.

54

www.edgemagazine.org

Low pony braids at Lie Sangbong SS15 Collection Show Step 1- Start off by blow drying the hair smooth ensuring the nozzle is on the dryer to keep a sleeker smoother finish and you use cashmere touch hydrating serum, give your look a parting at the front on a diagonal for a different unique look Step 2- Run TRESemme serum through the midlengths and ends, to reduce any frizz or flyaways. Step3- bring the hair in tightly to the nape of the neck and plait the hair only 2 inches down and tie with a bobble or elastic Step 4- Finish with TRESemme 24hour hold hairspray- for extra gloss add TRESemme shine spray. Both looks were featured at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. www.mbfashionweek.com

TOP TIP: Protect your hair this summer from the sun’s harmful rays. The sun will dry out the natural oils so it’s important to protect your hair like you would your skin. There are plenty of UV protective products on the market at varying price point. Work these products into your hair before you braid and you’re good to go.

Le Petit Spa Urban sanctury

Lucie Abu-Zalaf & Megan Ace

N

estled right at the heart of Birmingham’s bustling city centre, at the front of the Mailbox, you will find super trendy hotel, Mal Maison. Our destination was Le Petit Spa, to see if you really can find calm and tranquillity in the middle of such a busy city. Walking in through the hotel reception we were shown downstairs to the back of the hotel and into the spa where we were warmly greeted and asked when in our afternoon we would like to have our lunch and refreshments. With Megan being quite pregnant and me being, well, me, we of course opted for straight away. So after filling in the mandatory health questionnaires and selecting our menu choices we were shown back upstairs to the brasserie where we were seated at a pleasant table by the window, allowing a good view of all of the city’s lunchtime goings on. As we were on a

56

www.edgemagazine.org

‘let’s be healthy’ kick, we both ordered salads-mine a chicken ceasar and Meg’s a blue cheese and pear, although it was a bit of a battle between that and the Mal Maison Club which sounded absolutely amazing. When our food arrived we were both extremely pleased with our choices and the afternoon got even better when I was presented with a glass of champagne and Megan with a deliciously refreshing virgin mojito. A good start to the afternoon! Sauntering back downstairs we changed into our robes (casually dismissing the slightly small but well appointed gym) and went to check out the spa’s facilities. Making the most of what is actually not a huge area, the design team have done a fantastic job to ensure that the spa does feel extremely well appointed and relaxing, which can be tough with hotel spas as I often think that sometimes you can almost feel like you’re locked in a

basement dungeon. Not here though! After a soak in the bubbling jacuzzi and a quick trip to the sauna and steam rooms, we changed back into our robes and headed to the relaxation room. And what a perfectly relaxing room this was. Decorated with calming colours, soft lighting and lengths of bamboo, furnished with luxurious day beds and plenty of magazines and newspapers to hand, you would have absolutely no idea that you were right in the heart of a busy hotel in the countrie's second city. We had two hours before our treatments were due to begin. Two whole hours. It was amazing. As anyone with today’s hectic lifestyle can understand, this was bliss. We chatted, snoozed, read a little and only occasionally checked our phones. The time went in the blink of an eye and we were then collected by our individual therapists and whisked off to our treatment rooms.

I experienced the Half Day Holistic package, which included an aromatherapy facial, aromatherapy back massage and a Jessica Zen Pedicure. Le Petit Spa uses ESPA products, which is always such a treat to the body and all of your senses. My back massage was perfect, worked out all of the knots that tend to accumulate with a toddler and a career without crippling me or making me wince too much and after having my face analysed with a special light, my facial began. From warm to cool and concluding in pink mud mask and a head massage, when it was time to get up and go for my pedicure I had totally wound down and was feeling more calm and zen-like than ever. The one good thing about being pregnant, amongst others, of course, is the amount of Yummy Mummy/ Pre Natal massages you can indulge yourself in. ‘It’s for the baby’s benefit’ has swiftly become my mantra. The Yummy Mummy package offered here is extraordinary. A 2 ½ hour treatment which includes a Full Body Exfoliation, a Back Massage an Oriental

Scalp Massage, a Jessica Prescriptive Manicure or Jessica Zen Spa Pedicure, Lunch and Mal chocolates. My therapist seems to have descended from the heavens and quickly reminds me of my inner peace. Right there, in that moment, you not only feel like the luckiest person alive to be being treated in such a way, but that you are weathering the most herculean task in the world, which you should proud of. Growing a baby, that is, not being massaged. I find I don’t often have the time to appreciate this; my toddler simply doesn’t have the patience for me to do so. I asked my therapist to go pretty firm during the massage, which she was more than happy to do – a rarity I find, whilst pregnant. But these girls are ESPA trained, so they know how to massage. And massage superbly well. I opted for the pedicure to give my pregnant, elephant feet the attention they deserve. At least my miracle worker can attempt to make them look like they belong to a human.

My full body exfoliation and massages are delivered in silence with candle-lit warmth, understanding and a sensitivity towards my body and my baby, which fills me with joy just thinking about it. I drift in and out of sleep and wake up thinking I must be dreaming. The whole afternoon felt like pure luxury. I almost felt guilty I was enjoying it so much - surely this can’t be work?! With places to nap, read, eat and ponder, this inner city house of tranquillity will most definitely be on my to-do list when I next visit Birmingham.

Meet Mark Petchey: professional tennis coach and commentator Mark Petchey was speaking at a pre-Wimbledon National Tennis Roadshow by David Lloyd Leisure

P

erhaps best known for his work with Britain’s tennis superstar, Andy Murray, Mark Petchey has had many lives in tennis. As a young boy he joined a local club before turning professional after he left school. Little did he know he would end up developing upcoming talent and commentating for the BBC and Sky Sports. Most recently, Mark has been on a leisure tour with the David Lloyd team in a campaign aimed at getting Britain’s kids to pick up a racquet. We caught up with Mark to find out more. So what’s the David Lloyd leisure tour all about? Well, we’re going to be meeting lots of kids today and I’m hoping to give them an opportunity to play and have fun. We’re demonstrating the innovative REBO™ wall which offers the perfect ‘hitting partner’ solution. It’s great because it doesn’t take up much space. Often schools are reluctant to set up tennis courts because it’s more economical to have a football or hockey pitch which is understandable. But with the REBO™ wall, space isn’t an issue. It’s also great because you are setting the speed of the ball and therefore the difficulty for yourself. With tennis, as with most sports, it’s just having the opportunity to try it and like it and that’s what we’re hoping to do with the clinic. Tell us about how you got into tennis. I joined my local tennis club in Essex; my parents played too so I was exposed to tennis at a young age. It was all very competitive at the club I joined, it’s produced fine players. But I didn’t go to an academy or anything. I stayed in school and had a very normal childhood. It wasn’t until after school that I realised my passion for it and I worked really hard to get into the top 50. Of course, the more I played the better I got and the more I understood the game.

60

www.edgemagazine.org

What about coaching? The coaching side of things came more unexpectedly. I stopped playing professionally in 1998 when my wife and I were expecting our first child. I was asked by a friend to advise on these two young players and decide whether they had the potential to go far. I went out to Australia to see them play and then things just went from there really. How did you meet Andy Murray? Well, I first saw Andy play in Scotland – he’s always had the X factor. He was between coaches and I said I would look after him for a while. We bonded and we ended up working together for a year. We had a good connection. It just so happened that during that time he went from outside top 300 to inside the top 50. What would you say are the most important requirements to make a champion? Talent and hard work. But talent isn’t necessarily more important – it might give certain advantages on the court but it’s the passion and drive which keeps you out there training each day. It’s an unbelievable amount of hard work that goes into being a professional tennis player let alone a champion. Which tennis player have you loved to watch? John McEnroe was always a source of inspiration to me. He had so much talent and he was an unorthodox player. His was also the first Wimbledon final I ever went to. His is a style of tennis I always tried to emulate.

How can our readers keep up to date with this summer’s tennis events? There’s a lot going on this summer, of course there’s Wimbledon to look forward to, the Queen’s Club Championship, grass court events etc. You can find out more about all of these on the LTA website. If you’re hoping to get back into tennis this summer or if you’re hoping to give it a go for the first time, you can also find leisure centres and local courts on the LTA website too. David Lloyd offer a great coaching programmes and junior tennis programmes for the summer holidays. To learn more about the tennis programmes on-offer, go to www.davidlloyd.co.uk For more on the Lawn Tennis Association and upcoming tennis events, go to www.lta.org.uk

Audi Service Review Delivering Premium Lucie Abu-Zalaf

W

e’ve all been there, happily getting into your car about to head out, starting the engine and up pops that little, most inconvenient light telling you that your service is due. Or generally overdue in my case. Now, the big question is whether to take it to a main dealer or whether to call the garage at the end of the road. There are many benefits to having your car serviced by a franchised main dealership. At the top has to be the knowledge and security that your warranty will be preserved, while some independents can be warranty approved, a franchise can guarantee this and it will go a long way to protecting your car’s residual value. At Audi, it also ensures that your car is worked on by highly trained technicians, experienced in dealing with your specific car and only genuine Audi parts are fitted, all helping to prolong the life of what is often a purchase which is only second in value to your home. However, as I tend to swap my cars fairly frequently, residual value doesn’t often enter my head. I know it should, but I’m easily distracted by what I want next. For me, the main reason to have my car serviced by Audi is the convenience and cost. In the past main dealership servicing was synonymous with high costs, but that is rarely the case these days, with fixed rate servicing and MOTs, your Audi can be serviced for as little as £159 and an MOT for £49.99 which includes MOT protection covering you for up to £750 on a wide range of repairs should your Audi fail. I called in to Worcester to arrange my service and they couldn’t have been more accommodating. I was offered a coffee and a biscuit while we discussed when would be the best day to go for. Once the date was decided I was then asked whether I would be dropping the car into the garage myself or if I would like it collected from home or work and if I would need a courtesy car. As a working mum, this was music to my ears. A day without a car when having to get the little one to nursery and then me to the office fills me with dread. While you may save a small amount these days on a service by going to an independent garage, if you factor in being without a car for the day and having to go to the garage to drop your car in, I don’t think there is any comparison.

Listers Audi Worcester Bromyard Road, Worcester WR2 5EA 01905 421000 Listers Audi Coventry 503 Fletchamstead Highway,

I was also emailed a video of my car while it was being looked at to show me any extra work that was suggested, a brilliant touch for putting your mind at rest and showing you that they aren’t adding things onto the bill for no reason and of course checking before any work was completed.

Coventry, CV4 9BY

All in all, what is often a real pain in the backside, was made incredibly easy by Audi so next time your Audi is due a service or MOT, give them a call and enquire about their fixed rate servicing and MOTs, you’ve got nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

£10,000 awarded to local causes through Lovebrum

L

A proud moment for Birmingham

oveBrum, the charity launched earlier this year to unearth hidden gem projects in the city, has completed its first round of member voting and has awarded three causes a total of nearly £10,000. Homelands Festival, Ups and Downs, and Serve Our Brummies have been chosen by LoveBrum members, after the first online voting process for the charity. The Homelands Festival aims to put on an event at Sanctuary’s Homelands retirement living scheme in Birmingham, bringing together residents with children from the Perry Beeches Academy, and other groups across Birmingham. The project has been awarded £1,000 to hire the event marquee and provide food and drink for the 150 guests attending. There will also be a selection of games, including traditional lawn games, that will be supported by the LoveBrum funding. Over the last few years students from Perry Beeches have attended Homelands to interact, eat with, build for and camp with the residents. Homelands Festival is the next step in promoting the value of inter-generational activities and the importance of combatting social isolation.

64

www.edgemagazine.org

Ups and Downs is a support group for children with Downs Syndrome and their families; meeting regularly to help and support each other, as well as make new friends. The charity has been awarded just under £5,000 from LoveBrum, to help fulfill the needs of its rapidly growing membership. Speech and language is an area of development that often has significant delay in children with Downs Syndrome, and most children use Makaton as a way of communicating alongside speech. Some of the money from LoveBrum will go towards training a trustee to complete the Makaton tutor course so they can deliver training to parents at the earliest opportunity. Makaton resources can be expensive, so the money will also help the charity purchase books and DVDs to build up a resource library from which parents can borrow items. This will come in addition to paying a Speech and Language Therapist to provide Up and Downs with small group sessions to ensure the children are receiving some regular Speech Therapy.

The final project selected by LoveBrum members is Serve Our Brummies, which was set up to feed homeless people and those who have fallen on hard times in the city centre. It is run by volunteers who are on hand to give support and advice, as well as provide a sandwich, some soup, and a hot drink. It is part of a registered charity, which was created to provide the homeless with food and clothing, and the money awarded by LoveBrum will help to fund the ongoing services for 12 months. “We had a phenomenal number of projects put forward for our first round of funding; all of which were very deserving. It was a difficult task but eight were put forward to our members to vote, and over the course of one month we saw the votes come in thick and fast,” said PJ Ellis, CEO of LoveBrum. “After all of the planning and promotion that has gone into launching LoveBrum, I’m delighted that we’re finally at the stage of giving money to people who are doing amazing things for our city. In the charity’s first 12 months, we’ll promote 40 causes and raise a minimum of £120,000 to fund 12 projects. Even the projects that were unsuccessful this time round will be supported; the LoveBrum Academy providing advice and support to help them flourish and grow, which is what it’s all about,” he added. LoveBrum is funded solely by its members and events; all individual memberships go into the funding pot to help projects like Homelands Festival, Ups and Downs, and Serve Our Brummies. Membership costs just £20 and gives you the chance to vote in each funding round. The charity boasts lean running costs but also relies on corporate support to help with every day overheads, so that every penny from fundraising goes directly to the causes. LoveBrum recently announced that Prologis, H-J Wealth Planning and FleetMilne had all signed up as corporate members, with an additional eight companies signing up as service patrons.

“We still need more people to support LoveBrum; whether that be signing up as Patrons, Corporate Members or Individual Members. Whatever help you can give will help us raise more money for our causes. LoveBrum only supports local projects that deliver real change and together, we can really make a difference, and the best thing is that it’s our members who make the decisions so I would encourage everyone to get involved. Reading about our three winning projects gives you an idea of just how vital LoveBrum’s funding is,” Tim Andrews, LoveBrum chair added. Primrose Hospice Find out how you can help

P

eople are usually surprised when they come to Primrose Hospice. Many people think of hospices in a negative way, expecting doom and gloom. However, Primrose is a warm, wonderful and positive place, offering many services for people with life-limiting illnesses and their families, across North East Worcestershire. Our Day Hospice is open four days a week, providing sessions where people can meet others in a similar situation, enabling them to support each other, as well as receiving support from us. Our care team works closely with local GPs, District Nurses and Consultants. We also give patients access to specialist nurses, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and a lymphoedema service. This is alongside counselling, support and access to a specialist palliative consultant. Patients receive pain and symptom management, emotional support and our Day Hospice sessions gives carers some much needed respite. Our Coppice Centre provides a range of free counselling services, complementary therapies, Citizen’s Advice Bureau advice, and a range of support and bereavement groups. We also have a specialist children and families worker who supports young people through bereavement. Making memory boxes is one very popular activity, allowing families a way of remembering their loved ones whilst being supported by our staff. Our Primrose at Home service is vital, free support for people at the end stages of life, who wish to be cared for in their own home. The care is provided by experienced specially trained Health Care Assistants and we offer both day and night shifts to allow people to remain in familiar surroundings. This gives family members a much need break during the day and peace of mind while they sleep. Primrose Hospice needs to raise over £1.6 million per year in order to provide our services for free, but we only receive about 20% of our funding from the NHS. This means we rely heavily on local people to fundraise for us, across a range of events each year.

66

www.edgemagazine.org

How can you help Primrose? We are always looking for people to fundraise for us, either by holding an event, or by taking part in one of our sponsored challenges. You can walk, run, cycle and even parachute for Primrose! We are also offering places in this year’s Rainbow Run, a 5k run where you are showered with coloured powder! Alternatively you can set up regular giving or simply make a one off donation. Our Christmas Lights of Love Appeal is a great way to remember someone you have lost, whether they have had help from Primrose or not. We are always looking for volunteers. Our 400 plus army of volunteers do everything from driving our patients, gardening and admin; to providing family support services, counselling and complimentary therapies. You can also support us in our six charity shops, including our furniture shop in Headless Cross, Redditch. You can find out more about the hospice, and how you can help us, on our website www.primrosehospice.org. We are also on Twitter: www.twitter.com/primrosehospice or on Facebook by searching ‘Primrose Hospice’.

New ISA's

What the changes mean for you? Tom Ware

I

n the last election, all three main political parties sought to impose further limits on the tax reliefs associated with pensions. In this context, ISAs have become more important for financial planning. The Chancellor showed ongoing commitment to ISAs in the recent budget with increased flexibility and the launch of a new ‘Help to Buy’ ISA.

Help to buy ISA The Government also announced the first ‘help to buy ISA’. First time home buyers looking to save for their deposit can now get tax relief on their savings under the new scheme from autumn 2015. The ISA provides 25% tax relief on savings up to £12,000.

From autumn 2015, savers with Cash ISAs will be able to dip into their savings and replace them without it counting towards their annual subscription limits. Previously if savers withdrew money from an ISA during one tax year, that part of their annual allowance was automatically lost. Any new contributions would then erode a saver’s annual allowance.

If someone saves the full £12,000, under the new scheme, the government would add a further £3,000 to their savings, giving them £15,000 towards the purchase of their first home. This tax relief isn’t given at the point of saving, but is instead added when the saver buys the house. The government has set a limit of £250,000 (or £450,000 in London) on the property value.

Under the new system, any additional contributions will have to be paid within the same tax year as the withdrawal for them not to be counted. These new flexible funding rules do not apply to stocks and shares ISA. This is presumably intended to discourage investors from dipping in and out of stock markets rather than looking longer-term. These changes come on top of other recent amendments to the ISA system, including an increase in the allowance to £15,240 and changes to allowable investments.

The new scheme is technically a Cash ISA and as a result it won’t be possible to subscribe to two separate Cash ISAs (Cash & Help to Buy) in the same tax year.

ISA inheritability

Personal Savings Allowance

The key change that came in at the start of this tax year is ISA inheritability. Spouses and civil partners whose partners died after 3 December 2014 are now eligible for an increased ISA allowance equal to their late partners ISA value at the date of their death. The surviving spouse will be able to use the additional allowance by topping up an existing ISA or opening a new ISA with an ISA manager of their choice.

The Government introduced a personal savings allowance in the recent budget, which will have an impact on cash ISAs.

This means that the surviving spouse can continue to benefit from tax free investment returns. The spousal IHT exemption will mean there’s no IHT due if the surviving partner inherits the ISA funds, but the funds will still be considered an asset of the estate and would be subject to tax if passed to anyone else.

The subscriptions can be made to a cash or stocks and shares ISA, and can be in cash or inherited non-cash ISA assets. There is a time limit in which the claim must be made. If the date of death is after 6 April 2015, the claim must be made within three years for subscriptions in cash and 180 days for subscriptions “in specie”.

Investment plans and funds may involve risks to both capital and income. Past performance is not a guide to the future and the value of investment can fall as well as rise. You might not get back the full amount invested particularly if an encashment is made in the early years. The descriptions of tax rules are based on Churchill Investments’ understanding of law and HMR&C practice. Tax rules are subject to change. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. Churchill Investments plc is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

The new allowance will be introduced on up to £1,000 of a basic rate taxpayer’s savings income, and up to £500 of a higher rate taxpayer’s savings income each year from 6 April 2016. It will be in addition to the tax advantages available through ISAs. The Personal Savings Allowance will not be available for additional (45%) rate taxpayers. Banks and building societies will no longer have to deduct 20% income tax on interest from non-ISA savings from April 2016. Many have suggested that it sounds the death knell for cash ISAs. After all, savers investing the maximum £15,240 in a cash ISA at a rate of 1.5% could only expect an annual return of £228.60. That said, rates could rise in future and regular savers could expect to exceed the allowance after investing for a number of years.

Keeping hens happy All you need to know about caring for hens and enjoying home-laid eggs

T

here is little to no economic benefit in keeping chickens at home for eggs these days but the difference in freshness and quality beats shop bought eggs by a long way and the pleasure in seeing a group of hens scratching around the garden providing you with a daily dose of amusement as well as organic bug control makes them so worthwhile. Before you take the plunge, it’s important to consider whether you have the time, resources, commitment, knowledge and facilities to care for hens. It’s also worth noting that keeping hens is not always synonymous with keeping your garden as you like it. Pecking beaks wreak havoc with delicate, emerging flower buds and dust-bathing birds have a habit of spraying your foliage with soil. It’s important to bear this in mind. Where to put them There are lots of different options for enclosures; plastic, eco-recycled plastic, wood etc. Your choice depends on how long you want it to last and how much you want to pay. But a good tip is to get something a little bigger than what you think you’ll need. This means each hen has her own space. The sizing options for most coops are provided on the basis that all hens want to roost together. They don’t always and a pecking order may develop leaving some hens isolated. If it’s a bigger coop, everyone has a chance to roost. Remember, your coop should have floor space, perches and nest boxes. What to feed them

All chickens need constant access to fresh water. Their drinkers must be cleaned regularly and it’s also 70 www.edgemagazine.org

important to think about weather conditions. If it’s icy out, make sure your hens have fresh water – and not just melted ice. It’s not hard to get your hands on the right feed which will depend on the age of your hens and the breed. Chickens also need insoluble grit in their food to help digestion. If you replace feeders and drinkers, try and be consistent with the style so the hens know how to use it. The routine Keeping chickens is a big commitment and it does take daily, weekly and monthly routines to keep your hens happy. Daily: refresh water, a ‘stop and observe’ health check, collect eggs, scatter corn as a treat and close the pop hole at night and open it in the morning to protect your hens from foxes and other predators. Weekly: chicken houses should be cleaned out at least on a weekly basis to stop the build-up of organic matter. Clean feed hoppers, provide fresh greens, 5 minute health check. Monthly: On certain months in the year, you can give your birds vitamin supplements, or preventative treatments for bugs and diseases. If you get a chance to speak to someone who already keeps hens it’s a good idea. They can show you the ropes, share their tips and guide you as you go. If not, there is plenty of help online, you just have to look for it.

Anyone keeping 50 or more chickens is required to register with the Great Britain Poultry Register. However, we recommend that anyone with chickens registers so you get disease alerts, updates and guidance.

WHICH BREED TO CHOOSE? It’s a tricky decision to make. But here’s tip. If you do want to keep your garden in its best shape, bantams could be the answer. Although they lay less frequently, they don’t dig and scratch so much. The appetite for plants is also smaller.

Butterfly and bee friendly At Wagon House Gardens Karl Strawbridge

B

utterflies, the insect that we associate most with those long summer days fluttering on the buddleja which they find so irresistible. However the butterfly is in decline worldwide and our butterflies are in trouble mainly because their natural habitat is being eroded away and they react quickly to changes in the environment. We can do little to stop these changes but we can do more in our gardens to support and encourage butterflies to visit and help reverse the decline by planting nectar rich plants. Butterflies feed primarily on nectar but also on rotting fruit, they consume only fluids and they prefer the more simple flowers as this makes accessing the fluids easy, so resist planting the doubles or multi-petal cultivars of plants as they are not so butterfly friendly. Lots of common garden plants are butterfly friendly, lavender, hebe and hydrangeas, the everlasting wallflower erysimum bowles mauve, which is planted abundantly in the gardens at The Jinney Ring Craft Centre to attract the butterflies and of course, by far, the best nectar rich favourite the buddleja.

For three weeks this summer from July 17th to August 9th The Butterfly Conservation Charity are inviting you to monitor the butterflies for 15 minutes on a bright preferably sunny day in your garden and submit the results to them. The Big Butterfly Count is a national survey aimed at assessing the health of our environment. If you would like to be involved go to www.bigbutterflycount. org. It’s not all doom and gloom the high brown fritillary is fighting back. The striking orange and black butterfly last year experienced its best season for ten years and we can all help with creating a better environment to support the butterfly and also the bees which are equally as an important visitor to our gardens. Butterflies and bees are important as pollinators. Bees are also being affected by habitat changes. Planting nectar rich simple plants will help to support the bees also. It’s not difficult to encourage a better ecology in the garden and by selecting plants that display a butterfly or bee friendly symbol on the label can contribute to a better more sustainable environment for these insects to thrive. To control weeds and pests if you have to use

sprays try to use those based on fatty acids and plant oils as they pose little danger to bees and by spraying in the evenings when the flowers are closed, it can be a simple but effective way of helping the insect population. Enjoy your garden this summer with all those pretty nectar rich flowers around which are often much more fragrant, mindful that you too are contributing to a better garden environment.

Art in the Park

Jephson Gardens, Royal Leamington Spa

L

eamington Spa is set to come alive with creativity with the return of Art in the Park. Set in the stunning surrounds of Jephson Gardens, this colourful two day festival will take place on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd August.

Organiser Carole Sleight said, “The aim of the festival was to celebrate the wide diversity of local artists and create a space to demonstrate their skills and show their work, whilst also inspiring others to take up an artistic pursuit”.

This free-to-attend event supported by Leamington Studio Artists and BID Leamington will celebrate the diversity of local artists, craftsmen, performers and musicians and there will be something for everyone.

“As well as celebrating talented artists from all disciplines, the Festival makes the arts accessible to the community and gives people of all ages the chance to enjoy and try art in the beautiful setting of Jephson Gardens,”.

Visitors will be able to enjoy the work of over 85 exhibiting artists, workshops, demonstrations as well as live music, theatre and dance performances from Motionhouse Dance Theatre Company and Pauline Quirke Academy.

Carole continued, “We need help from volunteers and by people spreading the word to make sure that Leamington gains a reputation as a town with a vibrant art scene and an established yearly arts festival.”

A highlight this year will be the opportunity for the community to take part in a collective painting project. Lead by local artist Andy Farr, this will involve over 300 people creating a large painting representing the community’s associations with Leamington Spa, that will be hung over the entrance of Leamington’s Library. Visitors can expect to enjoy a weekend filled with art, creativity, inspiration and fun with opportunities to try their hand at making a range of items such as clay pots, flora and fauna inspired screen prints, or even their own t-shirts, with the help acclaimed sculptors, painters and craftsmen. Families can also enjoy the children’s tree animal creation and watercolour challenge, the poetry jukebox or dancing with paint! Even artists have time for a tea break so in the midst of all the fun there will be time and space to sit back and enjoy a range of delicious food and drink on offer. There is also the chance to visit the then newly opened award winning RHS Chelsea Flower Show Garden that is returning home to Jephson Gardens in August. 76

Stephanie Kerr, executive director of BID Leamington, commented, “In its first year, the Art in the Park Festival demonstrated a huge desire among local artists exhibiting and people attending for such an event to celebrate the wealth of artistic talent within Leamington. “It’s fantastic to be supporting the festival as it makes a comeback this year and rightly becomes part of the town’s annual calendar of events.” For more information volunteering email carole@artinpark.co.uk Full event details can be found at www.artinpark.co.uk.

The Rhythm Club

K

atie’s mission is to bridge the gap between grass roots performing arts and the professional industry, which she believes is currently dominated by London’s West End. Now a member of the Worcestershire Ambassadors Group, Katie sees an opportunity for her to promote the industry effectively in the region. Having grown up in Worcester with a passion for dance, Katie went on to train at the renowned Bird College for Dance and Theatre Performance in London. The highlight of her performing career came in 2011 when she made it to the finals of BBC One’s ‘So You Think You Can Dance!’ winning her a local and national fan base as an Artist. This introduced some unique opportunities including joining the Akram Khan Dance Company for the London Olympic Opening Ceremony and assistant choreographer for BBC1's Strictly Come Dancing amongst other things.

The creative arts are vital to the local economy and Katie hopes to give regional theatre the boost it so desperately needs. This dynamic independent company will nurture and showcase hidden talent in Worcestershire, working across the performing arts to produce the very best in contemporary entertainment. This cabaret show will have you dancing in the aisles with its rhythm pounding, show stopping display of song and dance! Some of the country’s leading performers, along side the best of Worcestershire’s talent delight in this quirky jazz club styled theatrical spectacle… tap dance at its very best! Featuring some well loved tunes, a live band and some spectacular dance performances - this is not a show to be missed! “Think Fred and Ginger for a new generation!” The Rhythm Club is a family friendly show with something for everyone.

Katie Love Artistic Director Sabrina Productions ‘The Rhythm Club...2” is playing at Number 8 community theatre, Pershore on 23rd, 24th, 25th July at 7.30pm. Visit www.sabrinaproductions.co.uk, facebook/sabrinaproductions or follow on twitter @Sabrina_Katie.

The Secret Life of Chinese Gardens 9th June 2015- 20th September 2015

This exhibition explores the symbolic nature of Chinese gardens and their harmonising effect. Architecturally, Chinese traditions emphasise hierarchies and celebrate social life. But gardens take on a very different role in Chinese society. These secret spaces connect man with nature, often as settings of romance and creativity. The Secret Life of Chinese Gardens brings together various artistic depictions of favoured Chinese garden plants and romantic scenes from Chinese literature; calming the mind and inspiring the senses. The Johnny Cash Roadshow Saturday 11 July

Takehisa Kosugi SPACINGS 22 July – 27 September 2015 Ikon presents the first major solo exhibition in the UK by Japanese composer and artist Takehisa Kosugi (b 1938). A pioneer of experimental music in Japan in the early 1960s, he is one of the most influential artists of his generation. Closely associated with the Fluxus movement, Kosugi joined the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in the 1970s, becoming Musical Director in 1995, and working with the Company up until its final performance in 2011. This exhibition will feature three sound installations, including one made especially for Ikon. Often comprising everyday materials and radio electronics, they involve interactions with wind, electricity and light, making sonic relationships between objects. Kosugi was first drawn to music by his father’s enthusiasm for playing the harmonica, and recordings of violinists Mischa Elman and Joseph Szigeti, which he heard while growing up in 82

post-war Tokyo. He went on to study musicology at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music during the late 1950s. He was inspired by the spirit of experimentation coming from Europe and the US, while simultaneously intrigued by traditional Japanese music, in particular Noh Theatre, and its concept of ‘ma’ - the conscious appreciation of the inbetween-ness of one sound and another. “That sense of ma in traditional Japanese music, the sense of timing is different from Western music. In my imagination time seems to stretch and contract. It’s not just linear.” Jazz was of similar inspiration, Charlie Parker in particular: “…I was totally stunned by him. That spontaneity and freedom, that beauty in the moment.” Ikon Gallery, 1 Oozells Square, Brindleyplace, Birmingham B1 2HS 0121 248 0708 / www.ikongallery.org Open Tuesday-Sunday, 11am-5pm / free entry
