ummer is definitely time to lounge around and do as little as you can; lie in the grass and stare at the clouds. In doing so, your thoughts might turn to the places you’d like to see whilst it’s warm, how you’d like to fill next weekend and where you’d like to take your family over the holidays. We’ve been thinking about these things too. We’re talking about Malvern this month. A cultural hub, full of independent shops, galleries and bakeries, set along views of cascading hillside. If you’re going to be eating out this summer, we highly recommend some fantastic alfresco spots for warm evenings. Sundays wouldn’t be the same without a roast, and the hot weather doesn’t stop us enjoying this tradition. We have a review of the Forest at Feckenham’s summer roast menu. We’ve also been to Birmingham to try out the all new champagne afternoon tea at the Laurent Perrier Champagne Bar at Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse Bar and Grill.

The cultural stuff never stops in the three counties. We’ve got a round-up of the Heart of England Galleries so you won’t be searching around for an exhibition of interest. And if that’s not enough to get you out of the house, then the RSC’s new production The Roaring Girl certainly will. Find out more inside. Make sure you keep up-to-date with all the latest local stories, features and exciting events on our website. On behalf of the team at Edge, have a great July and we hope to see you all again in August. If you would like what you see in Edge Magazine, please show your support by liking our Facebook page and following us on Twitter, as well as checking out our new website at: www.edgemagazine.org

SCULPT YOUR SUMMER BODY At Air Aesthetics Lucinda Bunn

moothing out lumps and bumps without surgery – sounds too good to be true, right? But that’s exactly what CoolSculpting delivers. You can be treated with the CoolSculpting technology on practically any part of the body – podgy thighs, plump flanks and stubborn paunches. So this summer, you won’t need to reach for cover-ups and kaftans, you’ll want to show off your sculpted, smooth curves instead. If you’ve got stubborn bulges that diet and exercise just won’t shift, then CoolSculpting will change your life. CoolSculpting is the only non-surgical alternative to liposuction clinically approved by the FDA*. Using revolutionary technology, CoolSculpting targets and freezes fat cells. CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling to target and crystallise these cells before they are naturally eliminated from your body. The procedure is totally safe. You’ll see the initial results after 30 days and final results after 90 days. CoolSculpting can reduce your stubborn fat by up to 40% in one single treatment. Exclusive to Central England, CoolSculpting is available at Air Aesthetics Clinic of Henley in Arden and Edgbaston. Dr Claire Oliver, an experienced and highly skilled aesthetics practitioner, says ‘the good news is that you can be confident on the beach and shape up in as little as 30 days with CoolSculpting; a safe, non-invasive solution. There are no needles, scalpels and no anesthesia required’, she explains. ‘Essentially, there is no downtime and no side effects. The treatment is revolutionary and achieves permanent results’. Trying to fit in beach prep treatments, frantic gym sessions and investing in pricey suck-in swimsuits can certainly steal the excitement away from a holiday in the sun. Instead, go for CoolSculpting; a pain-free procedure, effortless success and equally cool results. *CoolSculpting is the only FDA and CE Class 2a Medical Device approved for Cryolipolysis in the UK.

SOFT AND RADIANT Three age-defying hand creams Rebecca Burden
W
e all want youthful looking hands that feel nourished and soft but in a market that is heavily saturated in hand creams that promise the secret to eternal youth which are really the best?
Our age, no matter how hard we try to hide it, is always evident in our hands. So, any good hand cream needs to offer two basic but very important things as a base: protection against the elements and sumptuous moisture, anything else is an added bonus. The Hand Treatment by Crème de la Mer (100ml £70) This treatment is one of the pricier options on the market but packs in so many essential ingredients to offer you instant and long lasting results. It’s a very light formula which doesn’t leave any oily residue or a sticky aftermath and you only need around a 5 pence piece size amount to achieve the maximum results. By using algae extracts this cream helps banish fine lines and age spots and offers preventative shield to the wearer for hours on end. This one is definitely a worthy investment for those seeking preventative measures. Rose Hand Cream by Jurlique (40ml £15) For those who crave luxury from a natural source this hand cream is perfect for you. The Jurlique biodynamic range regenerates and renews your skin leaving you with majorly moisturised hands that have the aroma of roses. The formula is made up of organically grown herbs and flowers taken from the brands own farm in Australia making it perfect not only for naturally hydrating your skin but also your cuticles and nails. This one is on the thicker side so takes longer to sink but it’s well worth the wait. My top tip would be to use it before bed, let it sink in overnight and wake up with gorgeous, youthful hands. Hand De-Age Cream SPF15 by Dr Ceuticals (75ml £6.99) This is a must have for those who see ageing as their major concern when it comes to hands. It plumps and tones the skin and through continued use you will see a definite brightness in the skin. With its SPF and intense moisture burst this purse-friendly option is one to pop in your bag and take out and about with you for top ups during the day. No matter which you choose, just remember to pick a cream based on your hands and the appearance you want to achieve. www.bbyb.co.uk belovedburden@gmail.com

SPEND TIME AT TUSTAINS The finest jewellery and specialist watches
E
stablished by the Tustain family in 1895, Tustains Jewellers is steeped in its own history. Heirloom jewellery and technical watches are the specialism here. Tom and Joe Milner head up the new generation of experts and jewellery designers at Tustains, to bring their customers a personal, consultative service which continues a tradition of quality as things move forward. And it seems to be paying off. In the last two years they have been included in the Professional Jeweller Hot 100 in 2012 for Retail Titans, WatchPro Hot 100 in 2013, also for retail. They have won a Pride of Warwick Best Customer Care award 2013 from Touch FM and have been named as a finalist in Retail Jeweller Watch and Jewellery Awards 2014 as Best Independent Jeweller. The Tustains team has hand-selected the ranges and brands that are displayed in the gallery. With watches from Breitling and Omega, amongst others, Tom and Joe choose their brands carefully, for quality and style. Tom says, ‘Breitling is such a fantastic brand and we’ve had it in the shop for a year now. Breitling is also a family business and one of the only remaining independent Swiss watch brands’. These watches are cool and practical – ideal for style-conscious professionals. Tom adds, ‘Whilst big faces and gadgets are still popular, we’re seeing a lot of pared down styles with leather straps instead of link bracelets as well as smaller, more fine watch faces with simple dials’.
18
Tustains also provides a bespoke fine jewellery service which runs alongside the luxury range. Joe explains, ‘We sell unique pieces which are designed by us and made by our local goldsmith partner. We often use a stone as inspiration and the piece comes together around that’. Customers also go to Tustains to design their own pieces and to be advised by Tom and Joe as the process goes on. If you had loose stones or a piece of jewellery that you wanted to make into something modern and fresh, you could do so with the help of the Tustains team.
www.edgemagazine.org
The newly refurbished shop interior, which received recognition from the national jewellery press, is designed to provide viewing rooms and space in the gallery so customers can be guided by the Tustains specialists, making it a popular destination for both engagement and wedding rings. Because of their penchant for heirloom pieces, Tom and Joe have an unrivalled range of unique, classic pieces but also design -led brands such as Georg Jensen. It’s really important to Tom and Joe to take time with their customers, so you can walk in or book an appointment, take a seat, have a drink and discuss the kind of piece you’re looking for. At Tustains, you’ll find bespoke modern jewellery, classic designs and unparalleled service. The traditional pieces reflect a timehonoured commitment to quality and owners Tom and Joe have a fresh, personal take on guiding their customers to the perfect match. 89 Regent Street Royal Leamington Spa Warwickshire CV32 4NT 01926 421556 www.tustains.co.uk

STYLISH, MODERN SOFAS At Hatton and Harding David Hatton
T
hinking back to the standard matching three piece suite of the 70s, we’re thankful that upholstery has come a long way. These days there is no obvious trend when it comes to sofas, we just want beautiful pieces that complement our lifestyle and the way we use our homes. Just think of large, modular sofas that maximise seating for open plan living. It’s hard to find somewhere that offers sufficient choice that synchronises with changing lifestyles, which is where our bespoke upholstery service may be the perfect option. We’ve always offered this service but the word ‘bespoke’ often fills people with expensive dread... thankfully we’ve proved it doesn’t have to be this way and, as we advise of the manufacture cost and how much fabric is required, the overall price can be tailored to specific budgets. With so much competition from abroad, it’s nice that more and more people want to buy British and better still, local. Quality upholstered furniture is a big investment, comfort is paramount as is the overall look you want from your sofa, so spend time balancing your style preferences with comfort and durability. You can be indulgently swamped with cushions filled with pure down but if you think the constant plumping may become a little tiresome a foam core wrapped with feathers may give more support and less maintenance or opt for a style with a fixed back which can suit both smart and less formal spaces. Be sensible on size too, we always make a paper template for our clients so that they can visualise the new layout. Sometimes the hardest part is choosing the right style for your home and the overall look that you are trying to create...comfy, cosy, formal, relaxed...it can all be a little overwhelming. We have three favourite styles that are always a good starting point. The Chesterfield is perfect for that ‘Gentleman’s Club’ vibe, just think of Soho House, and was apparently designed to allow men to sit straight so that their suits wouldn’t wrinkle. They’re low slung (so don’t really work if you like neck support) with rolled arms at an equal height to the back. The quilted effect can be all over or quite often the seat cushions are left plain. These classics are being reworked into statement pieces that complement both modern and classic settings and we love these in aged leather or sumptuous velvets. The English rolled arm or Club Sofa is guaranteed to give your room country house style. With a tight seamed back, small recessed arms and soft, generous seat cushions. These sofas are generally skirtless and often on castors, although we prefer them without. Overall look comfortable and loungy and fabulous in washed linen.
20
Finally, the Camelback design began with the 18th century designer, Thomas Chippendale. Upright and crisp it works beautifully to create a formal Drawing Room feel. Its elegance stems from a subtle rise at the centre and angular square arms about the same height. They originally had slim and neat legs, although more recently tailored skirts have been added. Once you have decided on the shape, the options are endless with fabric depending on the look that you are trying to create and you may even decide on combining textures, such as using a piece of embroidery on the back of a plain linen sofa. With an array of upholstery finishes, you really can create a classic of the future. A dream start for Worcester-based kitchen makeover specialists
J
ust one year ago there was nothing. Now, more than 150 kitchens later, the Worcester franchise of the UK's largest kitchen facelift company, Dream Doors, has a portfolio bulging with satisfied customers. Run from a showroom on the Tything by husband and wife team, Mark and Dionne Battin, and senior sales consultant Jean Clutterbuck, the business supplies a cost and time saving kitchen door replacement service, as well as complete new kitchens – all fitted by approved and vetted local installers. “Last year was phenomenal – even better than we could have imagined,” says Dionne. “And the reasons for it? I believe we offer an outstanding product and service, and we deliver it in a manner that ensures total customer satisfaction. When a customer places an order, we only take a 50 percent deposit. The balance is then paid upon successful completion of the work. This means the customer is in total control, which means we have to do a good job! If we didn't fulfil our promises, we wouldn't be here today.” She adds: “Whatever our customers want, we're almost always able to say yes to them. If they need some new doors to fit an existing kitchen, we can supply made-to-measure replacements that can be fitted in just one day. If they want to incorporate worktops and a sink, or even a total refurbishment, we sell some of the best products around at very competitive prices.” For more information contact Dionne or Mark on 01905 887548, visit the website or call into the showroom on your next visit to the city.

ECO WARRIOR The eco-friendly gardener Karl Strawbridge
O
ne of the fundamental principles of creating a sustainable eco-friendly garden is to reduce, reuse and recycle. Eco-gardening is simply a way of making the garden more self-sustainable by reducing the energy/water demands of the garden, by promoting recycling and by attracting wildlife. Eco-gardening is a major step in helping the environment and reducing your environmental footprint. Choose an organic method for nourishing the soil, irrigation and in controlling pests and diseases, with a little effort you can encourage an eco-friendly garden. First of all...invest in a water butt and collect water from the roofs. Use this to water the garden. You could take this a step further by reusing the grey water from the house that would normally be discharged into the drainage system. Create a compost bin to recycle your green waste, lawn clippings and prunings. This is really beneficial when used as it both nourishes and feeds the soil but with the added benefit that when used as a mulch on the soil it helps retain more moisture in the ground so reducing the need to water. In turn this also reduces our dependence on shop-bought peat composts. Plant nectar rich plants for the bees. They do so much good work in the garden and cause no harm to the flowers. Encourage wildlife into your garden for a good ecobalance. Birds will consume many of the common pests of the garden so by investing in bird nesting boxes you will improve the diverse range and quantity of birds in the garden. Wagon House Gardens at the Jinney Ring has a good range of bird nesting boxes for tits, robins and even barn owls. Frogs simply adore slugs and snails so even a small pond or water feature will encourage a healthy frog population. Protect your plants from damage by slugs and snails with organic methods. Coffee grindings are readily available and free from coffee shops. When used around your susceptible plants, they’ll deter the slugs. Egg shells are also a good deterrent as snails do not like crossing the sharp edges. All these remedies are easy to administer without the need to resort to the blue pellets. Not all bugs eat plants, many eat other bugs. So, by encouraging the beneficial ones like ladybirds, you can maintain a natural balance. Reduce your dependance on weedkillers and insecticides as these destroy the beneficial bugs too. If you have to resort to weedkillers use an organic or natural product where possible. Eco-friendly gardening is inspiring, fun and so easy. Hanbury Road Hanbury Bromsgrove Worcestershire B60 4BU 01527 821421 www.wagonhousegardens.co.uk

SUMMER ROASTS
Savour Sundays outdoors Alice Perrey
M
y favourite thing about Sundays is meeting with friends and family to enjoy the Great British roast. Of course, it’s particularly enjoyable when you’re not the designated cook. The Forest at Feckenham is one of Edge’s favourite haunts, first time visitors will be delighted by its friendly informality, warm welcome and relaxing convivial air. Service is always impeccable and nothing is too much trouble. We sat in the lovely bar to enjoy our drinks and peruse the seasonally changing menu, which is chocka with lovely ingredients, many sourced locally. The Sunday lunch menu has interesting starter choices with chorizo and butter bean moules marinière, or crab, fennel and apple salad – there was a great choice. We opted for a charcuterie sharing board, homemade pâté de champagne, guindilla chillies, giant caper berries, mortadella which had been infused with pistachios and green peppercorns. It was excellent. The warm chorizo was really flavoursome, so much so, I now have the recipe. There is an extensive selection of main course. All of the meats come from Aubrey Allen as does the roast sirloin of beef. For those not wanting to indulge in the traditional roast there are plenty of options to whet the appetite with pan-fried hake, fondant potato and wilted spinach or Cannon of Cornish lamb, slow roast belly, rosemary pommes Anna, crushed peas, mint jelly, jus. My partner went for the roast beef which was cooked to perfection as ordered nice and pink, accompanied by the hugest Yorkshire pudding, reminding me of my grandmother’s specialty. The roast breast of chicken was succulent and both were served with crunchy roast potatoes and a nice selection of veg with braised red cabbage and a red wine jus, seasonal greens of courgettes and cabbage, laced with samphire adding some bite. The wine list has plenty of interest with around ten wines by the glass and well chosen bottles from around the globe. We asked for advice and we were offered a bottle of Beaujolais not yet on the wine list but apparently going down well with the locals – it was light for a red wine and particularly appealing on a warm afternoon. Puddings included generous portions of Belguim dark chocolate tart, American baked cheesecake, one of my favourites, panna cotta and a French cheese board. We shared a dessert from the specials board, the raspberry and pistachio tart with rich chocolate sauce and pistachio ice-cream, which we loved. Whilst the general manager Lucas wasn’t on duty Karen the deputy manager looked after us, as did Anthony, our waiter, and we couldn’t fault the service. The Forest at Feckenham is the perfect setting for your summer family get-togethers. 1 Droitwich Road, Feckenham, Worcestershire B96 6JE 01527 894422 www.theforestatfeckenham.com

HIGH TEA At the Marco Pierre White Champagne Bar Lucinda Bunn
T
he ceremonious excuse to indulge in delicate finger sandwiches and sumptuous cakes is never one to turn down. Of course, with the addition of Laurent Perrier’s finest vintage champagne, afternoon tea becomes something else entirely; it’s an escape from the dull and dreary and a taste of something fine and fanciful. At the Laurent Perrier champagne bar at Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill, afternoon tea is served with the panoramic view of Birmingham’s cityscape. On the 25th floor of this iconic building, you can see the modern metropolis as a whole for the first time. This is no quaint and cosy tea room but rather a contemporary showcase of the second city. Champagne to start and a flute of the Laurent Perrier Rosé Brut; a highly expressive bouquet with extraordinary depth and freshness. Seated in the champagne bar with its metallic leather seating, white grand piano and long bar, this is the way to indulge. Part of the ritual of course is taking in the beauty of each elegant pastry, the myriad of delectable, piquant treats. The three tier cake stand includes exquisite finger sandwiches with smoked salmon, roasted ham et al, alongside freshly baked and still warm from the oven scones, clotted cream and jam on the side. There is no correct way to eat your scone as we discovered. Smothering on lashings of clotted cream with a dollop of jam on top works just as well as the very popular jam base, clotted cream peak method. The delicate little cake miniatures are the real showstoppers here, with petit chocolate éclair, a square of carrot cake, a small brownie and an individual take on a Victoria sponge. Each bite is sweet and heavenly. If you like cake and champagne then there’s no better way to experience both. Tea brings the whole ensemble together. A subtle herbal blend cleanses and refreshes whilst the black tea options make a fine choice. This is the post-lunch, pre-dinner treat that the Laurent Perrier champagne bar at Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill has elevated to the 25th floor. HOMEMADE AND WHOLESOME Longfellows Restaurant: A review Lucinda Bunn
T
he food at Longfellows, Catherine de Barnes, is simple and rustic in the best way possible. The family-run business sees husband and wife team Doug and Christine as head chef and front of house, respectively and that definitely shines through. Sitting in the garden, which has sun-soaked spots and a covered dining area, there’s a lot to like about Longfellows. It’s the kind of restaurant that feeds you and doesn’t make a fuss about it. With starters like smoked haddock filled pancake with tarragon cream sauce and Gruyere cheese or black pudding, crispy bacon and cider cream sauce, this is comfort food to enjoy with friends. We went straight in with the mains. The alfresco setting called for a fat, juicy prawn skewer with a sweet and spicy dipping sauce, served with a tian of rice. From the specials menu, we ordered a stilton and red onion puff pastry tart in a chilli and tomato sauce. The mains were served with salads and sides of roast potatoes and ratatouille. It’s flavourpacked cooking, for sure. It’s everything you love to eat at home, prepared freshly for you. This is food that makes its mark through assertive flavours rather than tedious good looks.
34
For dessert, cafetières of coffee and raspberry crème brûlée. The obligatory crack of hardened golden sugar into a rich and creamy inner with the plump soft fruit adding lightness and colour makes for a great dessert. Add homemade crumbly shortbread, and it’s sweet success. No quibbles here. There are plenty of other dishes on the menu which deserve a mention. Baked salmon with chorizo and pesto, thick cut pork chop coated in mustard and breadcrumbs shallow fried and served on buttered spinach with cider cream sauce are two and hot black cherries with brandy on vanilla ice cream and brioche and banana bread and butter pudding are three and four. The restaurant is spacious and the service is warm and friendly. You can sit, eat and drink and feel cared for. The Longfellows menu is fresh and ingredient-led and in the sweet garden, there’s no better place to spend a summer evening. 255 Hampton Lane Catherine de Barnes Solihull B91 2TJ 0121 705 0547 www.long-fellows.co.uk

his is blue green algae and is extremely rich in proteins, iron, beta-carotene (30 times more than carrots), vitamins, minerals, trace elements. It is an extremely rich, complete algae that is perfect for athletes, convalescents and the everyday person. Spirulina can be purchased in almost any health store in capsule form and powder. It also contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B7, B8, B12, D, E, K and also omega 6. Chlorophyll is also present in spirulina and has a purifying action in the body. Below are just some of the benefits that you could have if you added it into your daily diet. Balance: Stress: Memory Promotes general well-being, balances the nervous system, reduces stress and anxiety, nervousness, depression, insomnia, promotes restorative sleep, improves concentration, memory problems and reduces high blood pressure. NEXT STOP SOUTH AFRICA Complex blends from the cape Laura Clay
www.edgemagazine.org
I
f you have yet to visit the wine lands of South Africa put it on your bucket list. Get yourself out to that beautiful country where, as well as wine tasting and within a couple of hour’s drive of Cape Town and the wineries of Stellenbosch, you can take in safaris, laze on white sandy beaches, gaze in wonder whale-watching, climb mountains, swing through tress on zip wires, indulge in fine dining and play golf. But you don’t have to travel 6000 miles to enjoy South African wine – you just have to nip down to your local wine merchant and buy a bottle. I’ve been banging the South African wine drum for years but now, more than ever, they are worth making a noise about and what I particularly like is that they have their own identity, their own distinctive style with a pride in their uniqueness with no need to copy wine produced in other countries. On the white wine front, Chenin Blanc is the daddy, the key to South African wine, so much so that it has its own name there, Steen. There is twice as much Chenin Blanc in South Africa as there is in the Loire from where it originates and South Africa can also boast the largest holding of old Chenin Blanc vines anywhere in the world, often deemed to produce the most interesting and complex of grapes. And, as in the Loire, it makes all sorts of different styles from dry, fruity to all levels of sweetness including the most unctuous dessert wines. What makes them so good is their levels of acidity which also make them great food partners with their pure balance and freshness, equally important incidentally in the MCC wines. Nothing whatever to do with cricket, MCC stands for Méthode Cap Classique – a sparkling wine made by bottle fermentation, just as champagne is. The grape variety South Africa can truly call its own is Pinotage. Bred there in 1925 as a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault (called Hermitage in South Africa), there are few plantings elsewhere in the world. It has come in for some criticism over the years for its pungent aroma but the best examples these days are stylish and serious. And, a surprise to me when I recently tasted examples from 1982 and 1966, they can age. A Cape Blend must have between 30 and 70% Pinotage in its make-up and may well become South Africa’s signature red style, though I have to say I have been hugely impressed with their wines made from Shiraz, which actually blends very nicely with Pinotage, too, and other grape varieties. Kleine Zalze in Stellenbosch makes top-drawer Shiraz selling for just under £30 which delivers with every drop and then some, but their Shiraz blends are more affordable and widely available. The range is great value at every price point and worth seeking out. And by the way, the Kleine Zalze wine estate is an amazing place to stay should you take my advice and make South Africa your next holiday destination. www.bywine.co.uk

…Sunday lunch should be mellow and magical…
Tom Robinson - Head Chef at The Forest Where better to spend Sunday lunchtime than in a relaxed country pub like The Forest? As head chef here, I make sure my team put real devotion into the food. Though I say it myself, our roasts are in a class of their own, particularly when accompanied with some exceptional wines and beers.

THE LOCAL KITCHEN Everything that's cooking in the three counties
Bocus d’Or Chef 2017 Announced Steve Love, founder and head chef of Loves Restaurant, Birmingham, has recently been awarded a place on the 2017 Bocus d’Or National team representing the UK. Steve, alongside Adam Smith, head chef at the Devonshire Arms Hotel in Yorkshire, fended off other competitors following a tense one and a half hour cook off at the capital’s Hotel Olympia in May. In the allotted time, chefs were to prepare, cook and present three different hot garnishes, five portions of each suitable for decorating a chicken ballotine. Steve and Adam impressed the judges with taste, complexity, precision, classic technique, innovation and the harmony of each dish. THE SECRET MESS A café review Lucinda Bunn
I
n the pretty town of Upton-upon-Severn, you’ll find the Secret Mess. The story behind this cool café is a simple one; business partners Ron Lines and Vanessa Steel have created a modern British menu with a difference to bring together foodies to try something new. The kitchen is the secret here, where Ron’s exciting flavour combinations and innovative culinary creations come into play. Using local ingredients where he can, Ron takes his favourite classic dishes and injects new life. Think mascarpone topped pears, gently grilled and served with a blue cheese and walnut salad or pan-fried black pudding served with the Secret Mess’ own pickled raspberries. Homemade cakes and fresh coffee is also a big feature of this popular eatery. But they don’t just serve the classics. Some of Vanessa’s most recent favourites have been a beetroot cake with a lemon and lime cream filling and a chocolate cake with an Aero mint ganache. Ron is happy to accommodate customers with special dietary requirements whilst there are some great veggie options on the menu already. With warm and eclectic décor, the Secret Mess has made quite a name for itself since its launch on Church Street in December last year. And now Ron will be putting
46
his talents into the Secret Mess Cookery School where you can learn the basic skills, master the art of dressing plates and even get tips on buying locally. Ron says, ‘If you can read, you can cook’, he explains, ‘it’s all about working out what ingredients can go with what, how to make them last and how to make them shine. Its practice and know-how; the first step is giving it a go.’ The menu at the Secret Mess is changing constantly, partly due to seasonal produce and partly because of Ron’s creative method. ‘I wake up with different ideas each morning and I head straight to the kitchen to try them out’, he says. In the winter months, Ron has concocted popular dishes in the café such as a Mediterranean fish stew with a daily selection of seafood in a tomato and basil sauce and the very rustic cinnamon beef casserole with the not-so-secret ingredient of dark chocolate. But this summer, lighter bites are making the menu like New York classic hot dogs with jalapeños and individual tart of four onion marmalade served with melted goats’ cheese and dressed with leaves. For more information on the cookery school call the Secret Mess on 01684 594892 and for more on the food, you’ll have to go and try it. Church Street, Upton-upon-Severn WR8 0HT

ESCAPE THE CHAINS High street alternative, Rock Follies Vintage Alys May
R
ock Follies Vintage is situated in the grade II listed shopping centre, Reindeer Court, in the middle of Worcester City Centre. They pride themselves on offering an alternative atmosphere to the high street. As you walk into the shop it glistens with glass beads and gold broaches while nostalgic music fills the air. It would be easy to spend hours in this little cave of excitement as you flick through the rails passing through decades, finding an individual piece, sat next to another unique item. Rock Follies Vintage offers a glimpse into the past with a synthesis of the present making 1920’s gowns transferable to the contemporary woman’s wardrobe, and 1950’s suits for the modern man. They stock an eclectic and beautiful range of vintage clothing for both men and women along with vintage jewellery, re-worked lines and unique vintage collectables. Lynda Case, creator and owner of Rock Follies Vintage says, “We offer something different to high street brands as we offer a full alteration service, a complete personal shopping experience and unique items that won’t blend you into the crowd.” Rock Follies Vintage offers sparkle and glamour all year round, although the rails cater to seasons, you will always find vintage classics and displays that will catch your eye. If you walk past the shop you will be enticed by the award-winning shop window and immaculately dressed models both male and female that are relevant to current seasons and trends. The window reveals an amazing selection of vintage collectables, home ware and stunning vintage ensembles that are but a few of the items on display. The window takes you on a journey through decades of the bygone era from edge to edge. On entering the shop the standard of the display remains. There is a time line of picturesque ensembles from the 1920s to the 1980s that runs along the top of the entire shop. “We’ve had dresses and suits go to Buckingham Palace, vintage weddings and Goodwood Revival. We have a collection of clothing and accessories suitable for afternoon tea, casual wear and even bridal gowns. So there’s a little something for everyone in our shop”, says Lynda. There aren’t many places you could go to pick up an original 1920’s glass bead handbag, a 1950’s wedding dress, a vintage camera, a pair of Levi’s and a fine bone china tea set. But at Rock Follies Vintage there’s an endless opportunity for something different. Rock Follies Vintage was recently voted as a top finalist in the National Vintage Award as Best Regional Shop. The shop is open Tuesday – Saturday 10am to 5:30pm and on Sundays 11am to 4pm.

THE FARM ANIMAL SANCTUARY A safe and secure home Hannah Griffiths
F
ounded by Janet Taylor, the Farm Animal Sanctuary has provided compassionate caring for hundreds of animals over the past 25 years. After walking into a Worcester livestock market one freezing, wet February morning, Jan was met with a sight that shocked and appalled her. Described in her words as ‘like passing through the gates of hell’, Jan made her way through the market and a sea of frantic bleatings, distressed animals and terrified cattle. Jan stood and watched as orphan lambs were auctioned, some only 48 hours old, hanging motionless from their front legs as they were shown off. Jan’s eye caught sight of one lamb that was being carried in a box; its lifeless body was being marched away after the auctioneer informed a worker that the lamb wouldn’t make it to the end of the sale. Jan quickly reacted. Handing over £1, she bundled the little lamb inside her jumper, turned the car heater up on full and raced to the vets. The lamb survived hypothermia, dehydration and gut infection. Jan named him Taro and he lived until he was 15 years old but Jan’s heroism and the passion to save as many animals as possible from a devastating life continues. In the months that followed Jan rescued over 60 of the sickest animals from various cattle markets bringing them to a safe and secure home at Manor Orchard Farm in Evesham. Now 25 years on, Jan and her small team of volunteers care for over 600 animals and birds rescued from neglect, slaughter and abandonment.

know they are safe. They look contented, confident and peaceful, the young ones so full of life. Not enough people seem to care about them, and there are not enough places for them to go. We do need your help and your support to keep the sanctuary going, please don’t forget them. ‘The Farm Animal Sanctuary has always treated each creature in its care as an individual. Jan knows them all by name and habit: what they like to eat, where they go when they are in a bad mood, how they leap about when they are happy and how wily they can be in preparing to breach a fence or nick someone else’s food. For this reason almost above all others I love being the patron of such an enlightened set-up: despite being on the brink of penury for much of its existence it nevertheless continues to offer safety and a loving understanding to animals who have been thrown on the scrap-heap. The newsletters talk of the farm animals as others would write of friends and family; scrapes, mishap,s triumphs, losses and terribly funny incidents; you realise that you are reading about living beings with different characters and needs. The Farm Animal Sanctuary is beyond reproach.’ The sanctuary needs to raise £2,500 a week to keep the existing animals and any future animals comfortable and safe and the only way Jan and her team can do that is with your help. Every penny that is donated to the charity is spent entirely on the sanctuary animals and their welfare. For more information and to find out how you can help please visit the Farm Animal Sanctuary website.
Jan’s passion to save these animals and many others like them is what makes this charity special. And with the help of patron Joanna Lumley, Jan and the team are continually improving the lives of animals that in different circumstances may not have made it.

Speaking as patron of the charity Joanna adds; ‘It’s such a joy to see the animals who have found their way to the sanctuary. They

LEAVING A LEGACY Thousands don’t. Will you? Tina Circus
W
e’ll all need to engage the help of a solicitor at some point in our lives, whether we’re moving house, going through a divorce, setting up a business or even facing a dispute with a neighbour or employer. Whilst the list above won’t apply to everybody, one thing that really should be part of every adult’s ‘must do’ list is to draft a Will, regardless of your age. Tina Circus, Head of Wills, Trusts and Probate at Thomas Horton LLP Solicitors, explains: Many people believe they’re too young to make a Will but if you have assets, and certainly if you have children under the age of 18, you should use a Will to dictate who those assets go to and who should look after your children if you, and anyone else with parental responsibility, dies. It’s particularly important to make a Will if you’re not married or not in a registered civil partnership, because the law doesn’t automatically recognise cohabitants as having the same rights as husbands, wives and civil partners. So even if you’ve lived together for many years, your partner may be left with nothing if you haven’t made a Will. Some people can be put off making a Will if they feel their family situation isn’t straightforward and they have no idea where to start. In this case, it’s more important than ever to make a Will as complex family connections could cause all sorts of issues for your loved ones in the event that they’re left behind. “Having a Will in place ensures that the people you care about are protected no matter what your personal circumstances are.” If you own everything jointly with your spouse or partner then you might assume that everything would go to them in the event of your death, and whilst this is sometimes true with property and investments, it is not always the case. What about personal, sentimental possessions that you might want to pass on? Your grandfather’s medals might only go to your eldest son if you set this wish out formally. And a Will goes further than just dealing with property and possessions. It allows you to appoint executors to deal with paperwork, to organise funeral arrangements and give to charity if this is what you’ve stated. It can be difficult to focus on the long-term when major changes might be on the horizon, such as marriage, having a baby, divorce or retirement, but a Will can be written to allow for things that are about to happen, for example in contemplation of marriage. Once any Will is written, it will need to be reviewed at regular points as
Tina Circus, Head of Wills, Trusts and Probate at Thomas Horton LLP Solicitors
your life and circumstances change and a solicitor can tell you what amendments may be necessary to update your Will, for example your inheritance tax liability may change as you accumulate more assets or simply as the value of your house goes up. To make a start, think about the information your solicitor will need and make a note of everything so it’s clear in your mind. Your solicitor will need to know: ● What you own ● Who gets what ● Your family situation and any beneficiaries ● Your chosen legal guardians for any dependant children
● Any other wishes – funeral arrangements, organ donation etc. ● Executors of your Will “Taking the first steps now means that you have done the groundwork. Many clients are surprised how straightforward the process is and feel a great sense of relief when they know that they’ve made their wishes legal and official.” For further information on how Thomas Horton can help you to write a Will, call 01527 871641 or visit www.thomashorton.co.uk

An individual approach to education
St George’s School
Edgbaston
JOIN THE ST GEORGE’S SIXTH FORM COMMUNITY
S
t George’s Sixth Form Centre, in Edgbaston, recently underwent an extensive redevelopment. It now provides state of the art facilities and an exciting and stimulating environment in which to study. Mr Loveday, recently appointed as Head of Sixth Form has ambitious plans to further extend and develop the already highly successful and thriving Sixth Form.
Give your child the very best start in life with an education at St George’s School, Edgbaston. A fully co-educational independent day school and nursery, offering a caring and friendly community for children from 4 months of age to18 years.
“Our Sixth Form truly encapsulates the St George’s ethos of providing an individual approach to post-16 study,” says Mr Loveday. “With a wide variety of subjects on offer along with the enrichment provision, students further develop into well-rounded young adults who are wellplaced to succeed in an ever changing world.” Students who have enjoyed the St George’s experience through upper school will be familiar with the vibrant atmosphere and will have benefited from the extensive teaching and learning on offer. The focus is on the needs of the individual and with teaching support in most classes the learning is further enforced. Every year a number of pupils choose to join St George’s Sixth Form from other schools and they quickly feel part of the school community. Hana Aziz has just joined Year 12: “My two younger brothers are at St George’s and they are doing very well. We like the family environment, the smaller class sizes and the support that’s available if required.” It is the community nature of St George’s, combined with excellent A-Level results and on-going university entry success which makes the school an obvious choice for those seeking the best education experience.

THE ROARING GIRL The RSC’s new production Laura McMillan
‘I care not what people think of me, I please myself’ is Moll Cutpurse’s motto. She lives by her own rules, breaks taboos and has everyone marvelling at her sense of freedom in a society dominated by men. She has more girl power than the Spice Girls and is being called the ‘Jacobean Pussy Riot.’
T
he Royal Shakespeare Company’s The Roaring Girl, is a fictional dramatisation of the life of the ‘Governess of London’s underworld,’ Mary Frith (also known as Moll Cutpurse), written by Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker. First published in 1611, the play transports audiences to the crooked city world of cutpurses, rebels and drag kings. Directed by Jo Davies, The Roaring Girl presents the character of Moll Cutpurse, a woman who lived as a pickpocket dressed in men’s clothing. She was a reformed thief and was labelled a whore for her behaviour, which challenged and transgressed the gender roles prescribed by society. The most notable thing about Moll though, was that she didn’t care about what people thought of her; she had a voice and she used it.
70
www.edgemagazine.org
The RSC are teaching a valuable life lesson, to not be afraid of what other people think. Lisa Dillon, who plays Moll, comments that Moll was ‘the original girl power’ stating that ‘people like the Spice Girls coined the phrase girl power (but) they had no idea what they were talking about.’ she was ‘a dynamite, cool chick out of her time. She was born out of her time. Her philosophy about herself, about life, was out of her time. She is inspirational in that way.’ The play published in 1611 still has relevance today in its ‘inspirational’ portrayal of a strong woman, with director Jo Davies attributing the Roaring Girl persona to both Lady Gaga and Madonna as women who ‘put themselves out there… ahead of the game and say actually I want to change the parameters, I want to change the terms that you are talking to me on.’ The Roaring Girl is set in a London fuelled by greed and desire where Sebastian is in love with a girl his father won’t allow him to marry so he turns to fearless and feisty ‘roaring girl’ Moll Cutpurse for help. Cutting a joyously independent path through the underhand scheming and petty vendettas of the London underworld, Moll proves more than a match for any man, taking on Sebastian’s father and anyone else who gets in her way. Audiences are calling the performance exhilarating, wild, buzzing and fantastic as the combination of music, wild energy and humour culminate in a very dynamic performance. With performances in the Swan Theatre until September 30th there is no excuse not to go and see one of the few Jacobean plays where, as Jo Davies says, ‘a woman doesn’t end up dead or married.’ Visit the RSC website at www.rsc.org.uk/roaring to buy tickets and find out more about the production.

AN ARTIST’S VIEW The trials of watercolour painting Robin Holder
A
bout ten years ago, whilst trying to capture the early morning light effect silhouetting an old oak tree, I must have thrown my easel nearly 30 yards across Chapter Meadow in a fit of temper, the only warning to any passing dog walker being the preceding volley of expletives. Why? Well if you have ever set yourself the challenge of painting the landscape in watercolour, en plein air, you will understand completely. Unfortunately, watercolour has a reputation as a simple, easy medium to learn, nurtured by images of Victorian ladies painting flowers whilst sipping tea and eating sandwiches. Alas the reality is somewhat different and I’m sure behind this gentile façade, one or two of them couldn’t half chuck a water pot! I once read a quote by an art critic who said of watercolour; “To build up a composition from light to dark, while leaving patches of white paper to represent the highlights, requires the forward planning of a chess player, the concentration of a Zen master and the dexterity of a brain surgeon”. How true this is. So if you are one of those up to your waist in the quicksand of watercolour painting, too stubborn to give up but desperately needing a lifeline, I may be able to help. Throughout this year you can join me in one of my studio workshops, be inspired on an evening foray to capture the fading light or indulge yourself with an on-site, paint day where everything is organised including a pub lunch and I promise, your easel will not take flight! VUE’S SEVEN SCREENS At the Hub, Kingfisher Shopping Centre
T
he Hub at Kingfisher Shopping Centre is Redditch’s new leisure destination. With some of the UK’s favourite eateries and all your favourite high street retailers, the Kingfisher has something to entertain the whole family. Now, you can take your trip to the hub into the evening with the Vue’s seven screen cinema.
Vue cinemas provide perfect picture, crisp sound and comfortable seating. The Sony 4K digital cinema experience delivers a new level of picture quality from every seat, spectacular detail even on the largest screens and world-leading 3D images. You can’t get film like this at home.
The Hub is the name for the redevelopment of the food and entertainment section of the Kingfisher Centre. Nando’s has officially opened the home of legendary Portuguese flame-grilled Peri-Peri chicken. The allnew Pure Gym is also in action, providing visitors and members a full programme of fitness classes, as well as the use of over 220 pieces of brand new kit and equipment. The fitness facility which is now open 24/7 offers over 40 free classes per week including Pure Spin and Pure Pump and free parking for the first two hours for gym goers.
At Vue, the Hub, you’ll find stepped, stadium style seating, delivering a full, uninterrupted view of the entire cinema screen so you can enjoy the latest movies and this summer’s blockbusters wherever you are in the auditorium.
But if you’ve got relaxation on your mind, there’s always Vue next door. Complete with four 3D digital screens, stadium-style seating, digital surround sound and a huge choice for every type of film fan, get ready to experience the future of cinema at the multiplex in Redditch. There are great transport links for rail, taxis and buses so everyone can head to the Hub for fun with friends and family.
Make a day of it with shopping at the Kingfisher Centre before heading to the Hub for a kid-friendly lunch and a film at Vue in the afternoon. Or maybe an evening out with friends, enjoying dinner at Nando’s or the Real China - the ultimate Oriental eating experience – and popcorn and ice cream at Vue’s multiplex. The cinema is open 7 days a week until late; an outing you can enjoy any time. Kingfisher Shopping Centre Redditch Worcester B97 4HJ www.kingfishershoppingcentre.co.uk
