ginger ice cream. The warm sticky honey cake was sweet and comforting with the delicious natural flavour of the honey coming through.
I decided on the two course for £10.95 offer at Le Bistrot at the moment; I went for the minute steak with pommes frites. Each steak comes with dressed leaves and a choice of red wine, shallot butter, green peppercorn or a brandy sauce. The steak was cooked exactly as I ordered it. Le Bistrot Pierre’s steaks are all cut from prime pasture-fed Scottish beef and matured for 21 days. The quality really stands out here, it’s incredibly good value for money. For dessert I opted for the sweet gateau au miel with double

The Treatment Rooms A Review Jackie Kamara
T
he Treatment Rooms in Leamington Spa offer specialised treatments you won’t find elsewhere. Open six days a week, the Treatment Rooms have built a reputation on high quality services with sensible prices. Originally above the Body Shop, the Treatment Rooms now has a new premises on Warwick Street. Nikki Christy took over the business three years ago after 8 years as the senior therapist and has been welcoming new customers and returning customers ever since. The highly qualified team are committed to providing a comprehensive range of beauty and holistic treatments using cutting-edge technology and the best products. From microdermabrasion facials and lipomassage body firming to manicures, pedicures, spray tans and waxing; the Treatment Rooms is the place to treat yourself. I recently went to the Treatment Rooms for an Elemis facial and scalp massage as well as a back, neck and shoulder massage. Elemis is just one of the fantastic ranges that the team at the Treatment Rooms use. Each product is specifically designed to feed your skin with the nutrients and moisture it needs. The active ingredients developed by the scientists at Elemis are natural and the company is famed for its anti-ageing range and spa therapies. At the Treatment Rooms, my spa therapist Cheryl described each step of the facial, which started with a consultation to assess what my skin would benefit from. Cheryl used the Elemis Pro Intense quartz products that focus on the renewal actions of the skin, with collagen boosting plant extracts and marine actives too. My skin was cleansed, exfoliated and hydrated. The products felt amazing on my skin and the experience was totally therapeutic. Next, the scalp massage, where Cheryl worked on various pressure points on my forehead and scalp to realign and relax the muscles. It’s a massage that focuses on the head but seems to benefit every part of your body. I felt totally relaxed and flashing schedule reminders and daily stresses just melted away. The back, neck and shoulder massage eased all the tension in my upper back and when I left I noticed my posture had improved. I felt an instant boost after my treatment, my skin was glowing and dewy and I have continued to see improvements. I think the Elemis range is fantastic and Cheryl is very talented. I really recommend it.

In the Kitchen with… The Stag at Offchurch’s, Head Chef, Sean Boyne Megan Ace
How long have you been working at The Stag? I started working for the CD Pub Co at The Stag back in 2011. In January 2013 I was promoted to Sous chef at our sister pub, The Moorings. Then last November I was offered the position of Head Chef at the Stag and I jumped at the chance. Where were you before? I spent the start of my career working around Kenilworth, I then moved down to London to work at the world famous Caprice restaurant before moving back to Warwickshire to work with CD Pubs. Do you ever move between the pubs under CD Pubs’ ownership? CD Pubs is very family orientated; we often help each other out in different sites (The Moorings at Myton and The forest at Feckenham) to cover absences and busy periods. I really enjoy working at the other sites as it opens your eyes to different techniques and management styles. March 2015

What are your fondest foodie memories from your childhood? My first real food moment was when I was 12, I went to my uncle’s house for lunch. He was a chef and I helped him cook the lunch. We made an amazing roast chicken dinner. I was flabbergasted at how such basic raw produce could be turned into such a great meal that brought a smile to my family’s face. From then on I caught the cooking bug and haven’t lost my passion since. What inspired your menu? Amazing, British, seasonal produce! We have the most amazing fish, meat and fresh fruit and vegetables in all four seasons, what more would a chef need to inspire him? As I chef I would hate to live anywhere that doesn’t have such defined seasons, life would be boring. What sorts of customers do you get? The Stag has a great mix of clientele. From the young adventurous foodie to the older refined palate! I think our menu can meet everyone’s needs, even those that aren’t massively adventurous. If you were a customer, what would you order? Apparently I am not allowed to say everything so I suppose if I had to chose I would go for our ‘Aubrey’s beef dinner’ - slow braised ox cheek, pan fried fillet steak, bone marrow & oxtail bon bons, fondant potato, roasted artichoke, wilted spinach, charcutie`re sauce. I believe this dish shows my true ability as a chef, it includes lots of different cooking methods and shows of the amazing produce we get delivered daily!

How would you describe your style of cooking? I was classically French trained and I love using this training to recreate British classics so I would say my cooking style is Anglo-French Do you like to eat out? Where? I love eating out and as a chef many think it’s a busman’s holiday but I really don’t feel like that. I often eat at the many country pubs in Warwickshire and at least once every two months I like to travel to London to see what the up and coming trends are. What do you like to cook at home? I love to wake up on my day off and cook my girlfriend and I breakfast, it’s always-such a great way to start your days off. We both enjoy a good full English and I think mine takes a lot of beating! If I’m cooking dinner I will often cook something simple like one of Aubrey Allens rib eye steaks with a few homemade chips. It’s simple, not too time consuming but bloody tasty! Oh and don’t forget the bottle of red to go with it! Are you offering up anything special for Mother’s Day? We will be offering some of our favourite dishes and our award-winning roast dinners! What else does The Stag have coming up? I have just finished writing the new spring menu (launching the second week of March) so I’m busy preparing the recipes for the other chefs to learn, then pretty much as soon as that’s launched I will start the summer menu. Life’s never boring when you’re a chef!

The CD Pubs Group A Business Profile Lucie Abu-Zalaf
The Forest at Feckenham
The youngest of CD Pub Co group, The Forest opened in September 2013 and has quickly earned itself a reputation as one of the best places in Worcestershire to eat and drink. Good food, local and well kept beers, ales and ciders and a strong wine list matched with relaxed and informal dining are what have put this place on the map. Whenever you pop in, you’re greeted with a warm welcome. Whether dining in the restaurant, having a light bite and playing board games in the bar, or just coming for a quiet drink and to have a read of the Sunday papers, The Forest will make you feel at home and at ease. The new menu is landing in late March, bringing a lighter feel as the weather brightens up and one thing to certainly check out is Sunday Lunch at The Forest, hands down one of the best places you can go for a roast.
The Moorings at Myton
The Moorings reopened in 2010 and has gone from strength to strength. Conveniently located at Myton, between Warwick and Leamington Spa, it’s a perfect place to escape the bustle of town without having to go too far. Serving classical, well made food with a contemporary twist in an imaginative and stylish location is what has lead to its success. The young and energetic team at The Moorings are incredibly knowledgeable about their trade and have also been awarded the Leamington Warm Welcome Award 2014, which sits nicely next to their Pub of the Year award. 22 www.edgemagazine.org
With spring-slowly- arriving, the idyllic canal side location is looking forward to utilising this relaxing waterside space again to the max, serving up a few old favourites alongside new dishes for you to try. And if the weather isn’t kind enough to go alfresco just yet, at least you can enjoy the fab food in a gorgeous interior setting!
The Stag at Offchurch
The Stag was the first of CD Pub Co groups pubs and one in which they fast earned a glowing reputation. The Stag offers quality food with good value for money. Using locally sourced ingredients, the Anglo-French cuisine is served up in a relaxed pub atmosphere, with unfaltering service. The 16th century, thatched exterior gives way to a beautiful and airy modern interior. Boasting a warm welcome inside and a beautiful garden for warmer days and nights outside, The Stag can cater for all types of engagements. From intimate dinners, to private parties and even small wedding receptions hosted in the conservatory, if you head down you will easily see why have earned a reputation as one of Warwickshire’s finest pubs and have been awarded Regional Best Food Pub of the Year in 2014 by the Great British Pub awards. From a mouth watering lunch time menu to a thoughtfully created evening one and, of course, serving the kind of Sunday roast that you would expect from this quintessential British looking pub surrounded with rolling countryside. You can see why the CD Pub Co group realised they had an award winning formula with The Stag and looked to roll it out further.

Status Menswear Get the right look Michael Abu-Zalaf
S
tatus Menswear in Leamington Spa has been catering for the clothing needs of Warwickshire’s men for more than 20 years. I popped in to find out what they are all about as part of our town feature, here is what I found out about them. Firstly, Status is not like your ordinary clothing shop. Not only does it stock a wide range of highly sought after brands, has 2 separate suit lounges and a fantastic shoe department under one roof, but it also offers a quality of service and attention to detail I have rarely seen outside of London. In a nutshell, it is a one stop destination for all your male clothing requirements and should be the first port of call for every man in the area next time you need some clothing. If you need something casual for an afternoon with friends, or a holiday, or you need something more formal for work, or a special event; no problem, Status can take care of all your clothing needs.
More impressive than their vast range of casual attire is the formal wear side of the business. Whether you are looking to buy a nice suit for work, or need to hire one for a special event, to go anywhere but Status would be madness since they actually have the largest selection of suits and shirts in the Midlands. The ability to offer an on-site alterations service is just the cherry on top in a long list of accolades. The only way to see exactly what I am talking about and just how much there is on offer at Status is to go there for yourself and take a look. If, like me, you like nice things and appreciate a great service, you will find a shop you will always just pop into when you are in the area. Their Spring/Summer 2015 collection is starting to hit the shelves, I would highly recommend going down and taking a look.
It struck me that it would be particularly good place to go if you are looking to buy a present for someone special and are unsure about what to choose. As I walked round speaking to each of the staff members, I was surprised to find out the depth of knowledge they had about the labels they stocked, making them perfectly placed to offer great advice. As impressive as their knowledge was the sheer range of labels they stock, including Armani, Hugo Boss, Jeffery West, Paul & Shark, Eton, Hackett, Duchamp and Oliver Sweeney, to name but a few. At first I was surprised they knew so much about it all, but it made sense when I found out that the dedicated team of staff at Status have a total of more than 50 years of collective service between them in the business. For the last 3 years, the business has been owned and run by Nigel Burton, who has stamped his mark on the place not only by updating the shop, but also by bringing in new and exclusive brands to cater for the needs of his clientele. These brands include well known labels such as John Smedley, Without Prejudice and 7 For all Mankind, but also more unique brands such as One Like No Other, of which they are the sole supplier in the region. With only 200 of these jackets available in each design world-wide, it is unlikely that you will be bumping into anyone wearing the same as you at a party. March 2015

Spring Denim Style Emma Jenkins
D
enim is a BIG trend this season, but we’re not just talking jeans. Think denim jackets, shirts, skirts, dresses, bags and tops, anything goes and variety works best. I swear by my skinnies but slouchy, distressed boyfriend cuts, structured dark denim boot cuts, 70’s flares and flattering high-waisted styles were all seen on the S/S 15 catwalks. If a pair of jeans is as far as you can push the denim trend, then a wellfitting pair is a must, but here’s my tip; don’t follow the denim shape trends (jumpsuits, dungarees and culottes aren’t for everyone!), just go for a style and wash you love and feel fab in. There’s so much variation to choose from! I always like my style to have a little edge or feel a little understated, personally I’d happily wear ‘double denim’ in a jean AND shirt combo, but this isn’t everyone’s taste. Denim is durable, styling it can be really simple. Sleek dark washes in a flattering fit look great dressed up. A distressed denim jean (think rips or worn patches) is stylish for a day look combined with a pair of converse.

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend
Lot 172

iamonds, diamonds, diamonds! Our Antique and Modern Sale held on the 12th March features a huge range of diamonds to fall in love with. Lot 172 is an old-cut diamond single-stone ring, weighing 2.46cts. The individual character of this old-cut really shines through but if a modern brilliantcut appeals to you more, then lot 193 may be preferable. At 1.51cts, and flawless clarity, this diamond is close to perfect. A beautiful pair of diamond ear studs also feature as lot 201 - weighing an impressive 7.37cts in total. Also on offer are over 70 lots of Designer pieces - From Boodles to Bulgari, Cartier to Chopard, and Theo Fennell to Tiffany. Highlights include a Cartier charm bracelet featuring the iconic LOVE, ‘Double C Décor,’ and cross charms, an instantly recognisable and stylish accessory. Lot 287 is another statement piece, a Chopard ‘Happy Diamonds’ pendant in the form of a heart and a perfect gift for the one you love, estimated at £1,000-1,500.
Lot 287 28
www.edgemagazine.org
lots 343 and 344 Another item of interest is lot 372, an Edwardian emerald and diamond brooch, by Irish jewellers ‘West & Son.’ Opened in 1720 West & Son were commissioned by royalty, as well as the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. In 1849 Queen Victoria was gifted two brooches crafted by the jeweller and inspired by ancient Irish brooch design. Upon receiving the brooches, she admired them as “...beautiful souvenirs, made after… very curious old Irish ornaments.” The West & Son brooch in our sale is Edwardian, with an old-cut diamond panel intersected by an emerald set bar, perhaps an abstract allusion to the ancient Celtic sword and shield symbolism that was employed in Queen Victoria’s brooches? For a modern take on green gemstones, we have a tsavorite garnet and diamond necklace and matching ring are offered at £1,000-1,500, and £200300 respectively (lots 343 and 344). Displaying a brilliant range of colour, the rich greens graduate from a vibrant
Lot 193 forest green, to a more subtle springlike green. Tsavorite was discovered in 1967 by Campbell Bridges and was first introduced by Tiffany in the 1970s who comically said at the time: ‘For centuries only giraffes and other African animals knew about Tsavorite…now…the world’s largest and finest collection of Tsavorite is finally available to all, and not just closed-mouthed giraffes.’

T
he Wood Norton is a beautifully crafted hotel with original 19th century, French decorative interiors inspired by the family who built it and their French connections. Set in the beautiful Worcestershire countryside, between Pershore and Evesham, the Wood Norton provides the historic setting for couples on their big day. The house, completed in 1897 for exiled European royalty, is a glorious example of high Victorian opulence, with stunning terraces and vistas all taking full advantage of the view beyond. A beautifully-crafted new formal garden laid in 2012 in parterre style, much as the French royalty that once lived here. Inside, the house is a real oasis; panelling and carvings adorn almost every room on the ground floor and state bedrooms on the first floor, with the furniture and furnishings adding a contemporary touch with a splash of colour. The Grade II listed mansion has all the modern makings of a contemporary

Infinity Beauty A Fabulous Facial

Owner Judy Hall is without doubt, a master of her trade. A magician, if you will. This must have been my 10th treatment with Judy and I consider her to be the very best at what she does. I quietly weep during my hour or two with Judy. Genuinely, I do as I have arrived in heaven. There’s a wonderful atmosphere in the room, created with tasteful sounds, the aroma of relaxation and a warmth coming from the heated bed. She is sensitive, silent and respectful and I am in love. Her product choice is ESPA – a favorite of mine and reasonably priced. It’s
impossible to leave the stress-free hide out without something in your hand and ESPA should be proud to be affiliated with Infinity Beauty. Prices are fair, and for a bi-weekly, or once-a-month treat, treatments here are definitely worth adding to your monthly expenditure.
New team member Frankie specialises in holistic theriapies such as Indian head massage, reflexology and hot stone massage, as well as pregnancy massage.
Infinity Beauty offers customers a wealth of top-to-toe treatments at the beautiful, luxurious salon, from facials, waxing, eyelash extensions and pedicures to Gel Polish nails and Universal Contour Body Wraps. They also offer more specialist treatments to complement their beauty range to include sports and deep tissue massage carried out by Monika Lindstrom Sports Therapist BSc (Hons).

The annual game and fish dinner At Wroxall Abbey Hotel and Estate
T
he 4th annual Game and Fish Dinner 2015 held at Wroxall Abbey Hotel and Estate marked the end of the shooting season and thus a celebration of the local game. The team of chefs, led by executive chef Jonathan Wearden, created an 8 course menu for special guests and Wroxall shoot guns and their friends. And what a treat it was. Dating back to the 12th century, Wroxall Abbey is as rich in history as it is in beauty. The history, the heritage and the grounds make an evening like the Game and Fish Dinner a wondrous experience. The theme for the menu centred on the local game and fresh, seasonal ingredients. The Wroxall Abbey Hotel and Estate team are passionate about environmentally friendly food and they

Steve Picker believe in the best of British seasonal produce. As guests arrived, they enjoyed canapés of smoked salmon roulade and seasonal pâté, served with a glass of Rosé Brut, selected by Wroxall’s sommelier. This was served in the newly renovated ‘garden lounge’ which provided the perfect elegant setting for such an occasion. The main course was the centrepiece of this fabulous evening, aptly titled ‘Five Ways Pheasant’, in tribute to the local landmark roundabout and of course the areas of the Wroxall shoot around it. The chefs playfully showcased texture, taste and depth with devilled spatchcock pheasant, breast in bacon, pulled pheasant, leg confit and pheasant faggot. it. The deep flavours of the meat with sides of seasonal vegetables are the finest examples of local pheasant and a credit to the Wroxall kitchen team. The dinner was served in Sonnets restaurant, which is a beautiful wood-panelled dining room with a roaring log fire. To complement the main course, guests were tantalised with lighter dishes of lobster bisque and wild boar and venison sausages. Of course, those who prefer fish could have opted for the paupiettes of lemon sole instead of the pheasant. Each course at the Game and Fish Dinner was paired with the finest wines from the hotel cellar which became great talking points, comparing notes. To finish, it had to be an English sherry trifle, paired with Croix Milhas, a French dessert wine, expertly chosen to complement the sherry and bring out the acidity of the soft fruit and the sweetness of the flavoured cream. The cheese sampler was served with Dow’s Trademark Port. No expense was spared here and Wroxall’s carefully considered cheese course brought the evening to a close with each table sampling the delights of stilton, Warwickshire cheddar truckle and Somerset brie. The Game and Fish Dinner was timely this year and fell on the very last day of the shoot; a day of role reversal, where for years, the beaters and gamekeepers are given the opportunity to shoot while the regular shooters take their places. It’s a great tradition at Wroxall and it makes for a very entertaining day and on this particular year, a fun filled evening too. The Jockey Inn reopens after a stunning three-year refurbishment
T
he Jockey Inn, a fabulous new gastropub on the Worcestershire/Gloucestershire boarder, finally opened it’s doors to welcome the public after a three year refurbishment. With two notable chefs at the helm, this rural delight promises to entice diners from across the two counties. The Jockey Inn is a stones throw away from Upton-uponSevern, in the heart of the picturesque village of Earls Croome. Equidistant between Tewkesbury and Malvern, the restaurant will be serving a blend of contemporary British cuisine with a focus on simplicity and heritage. Michelin trained Head Chef James Garth spent over 10 years at Colwall Park Hotel, while his Sous Chef Piotr Antkowicz joins from Ellenborough Park, near Cheltenham. The Jockey Inn has been closed for over three years. It was purchased in 2011 by owner Rebekah Seddon-Wickens and her family. An experienced property developer, Rebekah has lovingly overseen the complete multi-million pound redevelopment of the property. Rebekah said: “Our ethos throughout has been to try and create an exceptional rural dining experience which is relaxed in atmosphere yet exudes well-executed menus delivered by a team whose passion for food and wine is infectious. “We are delighted to be finally opening our doors this weekend and we are really looking forward to welcoming our first guests.

As a team, we have worked tirelessly to create a brand new destination for people to come and enjoy dinner and drinks with friends and family.” Working with renowned interior designers, Harrisons, the restaurant’s design pays great tribute to both the horse and the jockey. Saddles, boots, buckles and other racing memorabilia feature highly throughout the venue. Each space at The Jockey Inn has a unique concept to give an individual personality. Guests will find themselves entering through “The Tack Room.” With leather saddles protruding off chunky hooks, the aura of The Jockey is evident from the minute guests walk through the door. Earthy natural materials, including slate, oak, wicker and other textured wood, have been used heavily to create a rural chic ambience. Large fireplaces dominate the bar and the restaurant making cozy, homely and intimate spaces. A large glass ambient-controlled feature cellar sits at the heart of The Jockey. Displaying some of the finest wines from floor to ceiling, the glass cellar is a talking point for diners and wine lovers alike. Interior designer Mathilde Le Villain said: “Paying tribute to the restaurant’s racing heritage, as well as creating a home from home ambience, has been at the core of my work. We wanted a hint of style, sophistication and individuality while also enabling an ambience where people still feel relaxed and at ease. If you don’t fancy cooking at home one night, we don’t want people to think twice about heading to The Jockey. We are a place for every day dining as well as special occasions.” The Jockey Inn menu features simple yet delicious dishes that allow the provenance of the ingredients to speak for themselves. The restaurant will be able to seat 60 diners with a further 60 diners accommodated in The Bar. Riesling rocks It’s time you knew how much Laura Clay
T
here are good reasons why you, the wine lover, doesn’t drink wine made from particular grape varieties. But often this stubborn refusal to learn to love what some of us think of utter deliciousness is sadly based on myth and outdated prejudice. The most maligned of these dejected grape varieties is the exquisite, uplifting and tragically under-valued Riesling. Not pronounced nor spelt Rizling, and definitely nothing to with Laski Rizling, god forbid, which is altogether a different animal and one best avoided. Riesling on the other hand is regarded by most wine experts as one of the, if not indeed the, most delicious and rewarding of all white grapes. I join a long line of winewriters who over the years have attempted to persuade wine-drinkers that Riesling really is what they want to be pouring in their glass. Based on current sales figures we are not being very successful. Jancis Robinson, the queen of wine, admits that despite her banging on about Riesling for the last 35 years it still needs all the support it can get. The wine trade doesn’t get why the consumer is resisting Riesling’s charms. If it were because most people like less flavoursome wines then Sauvignon Blanc wouldn’t sell as well as it does. If it were because people fear it will be too sweet, then they wouldn’t be drinking Blush Zinfandels. Here are 5 excellent reasons to drink a Riesling: It’s likely to be lower in alcohol Rieslings are beautifully aromatic However sweet it may be, and many are not at all, the acidity is crisp to the point of zingy A very broad statement this, but if a winemaker is making a wine from Riesling he tends to be making a serious wine rather than plonk. Very importantly, dry Rieslings are foodfriendly. And versatile.
58
www.edgemagazine.org
Now let’s dispel the myth – Riesling is not that sweet German wine of the 1970s. That was made from a far inferior variety or two and was dosed up with plenty of sugar. Those elegant fluteshaped bottles which most people steer clear of do indeed suggest a German wine, possibly even a Riesling, but it may not necessarily be sweet - 60% of German wine is Trocken (dry) or HalbTrocken. But if it is a sweeter wine-style the bracing acidity will cope with it and balance it out. Look for wines which say Kabinett and Spätlese for a meduim sweet wine, Beerenauslese and Auslese for much sweeter. Alsace, once part of Germany but now firmly in the north-east of France, in the beautiful Vosges mountain area, produces its own distinctive and very elegant style of wines made from Riesling. These are wines to savour; they will refresh, entice and, with all fingers crossed, enchant you. They are clearly labelled by grape variety and, unless stated otherwise, they will be dry. I urge you to give them a go. There are plantings of Riesling in Australia, most particularly in the Clare and Eden Valleys, in South Africa, New Zealand, Washington State, Austria and many other European and New World wine producing regions. Would they bother if this wasn’t truly a great grape variety?
For your chance to win a bottle of each of these two award-winning wines from Alsace answer the question below. Domaines Schlumberger Riesling 2011, Les Princes Abbes Blanck Furstentum Grand Cru 2009 Is Alsace a French or German winegrowing region? Natural dyes And how to use them Lucinda Bunn
T
here are studies to support the theory that wearing fabric that has been naturally dyed is good for you; your skin and your wellbeing. Others attest to the negative effects of synthetics and artificial dyes. But regardless, this is a fun craft to do and an inexpensive way to transform garments and to live in colour.
Natural dye sources
Reds and pinks – beetroot, blueberries, strawberries, cherries, raspberries and hibiscus flowers. Blues and purples – purple cabbage, blackberries, grapes, purple iris. Greens – artichokes, spinach, nettle. Orange – yellow onion skin, carrots. Brown – coffee grinds, walnut hulls.
The method is simple.
All you need is some white vinegar and boiling water. Put your dye ingredients into 2 parts boiling water and boil away for an hour. As it simmers, add 1 part vinegar and 4 parts water to a separate pot. Plunge your fabric into the water and vinegar and bring to the boil. Leave for an hour. Rinse fabric in cool water before dipping it into the strained dye. The longer you leave it the deeper the colour! When you have reached your desired hue, remove fabric from dye and leave it to dry. TRY THIS
Shibori is a traditional Japanese tie-dyeing technique. By wrapping and twisting fabric around a wooden stick and then binding it with rope in circles around the material, you can create interesting designs. The traditional dye colour is indigo. March 2015

Scentalicious sweet peas A pop of green goodness Karl Strawbridge
S
weet Peas (Lathyrus odoratus), although originating from Sicily and southern Italy, are now an essential favourite of the English summer garden. Think of sweet peas and you imagine ruffles of fragrant pastel hues but there are also the more dramatic darker purples, blues and maroons.
Sweet peas are usually allowed to scramble up sticks, cane wigwams or a trellis. Dwarf varieties are equally great for pots and hanging baskets. When your plants have formed two sets of proper leaves then pinch out the tips to encourage branching, this will help produce more flowers, they can easily reach two metres up the canes or support.
Sow the seed directly into the soil in late March or early April, a good tip is to soak them overnight in lukewarm water to soften the seed coat. Plant five or six seeds per cane, they like plenty of deep root room, moisture or dampness, and a sunny spot. However to get the very best from your seed also consider sowing in the autumn as this will enable you to have a stronger, earlier flowering plant to last all summer. Alternatively Wagon House gardens at the Jinney Ring craft centre will have potted sweet peas available for you to plant in the spring.
By growing on the cordon method you will get less blooms but larger flowers with up to 4 or 5 or even 6 individual flowers per stem. Nip out all the tendrils and side shoots from every leaf axil tying the plant as necessary for support, this will encourage larger longer stems as all the plants nutrient diverts into the flower stem, it is really suitable for exhibition purposes or flower shows, but equally flower arrangers will love to use these blooms.

Sweet peas can suffer from Aphid attack in early summer so check your plants regularly and frequent watering is a must. Once your Sweet peas are in full bloom regular picking and deadheading to prevent them setting seed will promote even further blooms so in effect the more you pick the more you get it’s that easy. If you love having a bunch of fresh flowers in the home then these delightful scentilious beauties are a must. Pick them early in the morning when their scent is at the sweetest. Having visited the best of the interiors trade shows at the start of the year there seemed to be a stylish trend towards coastal chic. Make no mistake though, this is no ‘kiss me quick makeover’; think luxurious beach clubs, pristine white sands and azure sea for the inspiration to create your own ‘Hamptons Hideaway’. Hamptons Beach style comes from the Hamptons Region of Long Island in New York. Audi TT: A Review The TT is back- and it’s better than ever Lucie Abu-Zalaf
B
ack in 1998 when Audi first introduced the TT, it caused quite a stir. Based on the VW Golf chassis it was brought to market as a fun and sporty offering and certainly caught the eye. Audi have now released the third generation TT, with very similar underpinnings as previous models, but I have to say, this one really turns heads. Not that I was expecting it to be rubbish, but this little car really did exceed all of my expectations. I say little car, and although it is the shortest wheel base to use VW’s MQB platform, despite being pretty much the same length as the outgoing model, they have added an extra 37mm to the length of the wheel base and this little amount really has helped with the ride comfort and handling. I drove the 2.0 litre S Line TFSI Quattro S Tronic. Bit of a mouthful there and to simplify it down if you’re not familiar with how Audi do there naming, means that I was in a 2.0 litre, petrol engine that generates 227 BHP with four wheel drive and an automatic gear box. The S line trim gives you larger wheels; 19 inch alloys over the 18 inch ones that come with the base line sport model, sportier looking bumpers, deeper side sills and a gloss black grill. The new
66
www.edgemagazine.org
TT is certainly more angular looking than its predecessors, sharp bonnet lines and kind of mean looking headlights really man this car up, while the rounded wheel arches and sloping boot, still make it instantly recognisable as a TT. I filled up for petrol before, sadly handing it back and even the girl in the petrol station remarked ‘Wow, is that the new TT? That’s beautiful, love those lights’ so when I said head turning, I really did mean it. The interior has been designed with precision to be as sleek as the outside. Less is definitely more. Centred around Audi’s virtual cockpit system, everything is displayed on a High Definition 12.3 inch screen right in front of you. You can choose whether to have the speedometer and rev counter as the standard size displayed digitally in front of you in classic mode, or to shrink them down in infotainment mode to enable you to have a clear as day vision of the excellent satellite navigation system, bring up your phone book, album artwork from your mp3 player or monitor the trip and car settings. All right in front of you. Removing the display from the centre dashboard, really simplifies the interior of the car, even the climate controls have been embedded into the circular air vents, as have the controls for the heated seats. Don’t think this has taken the TT back to the old days of twiddling knobs though; everything is digital, just very minimalist. The sat nav can be programmed by voice control, which works well or by writing the letters on the touch sensitive pad, located in the fascia by the gear stick and once set up, pretty much everything can be controlled easily through the buttons on the steering wheel.
The ride in the TT is relatively hard, as you would expect with a sports car, but through the drive select you are able to customise the cars level of comfort and performance. In some cars, the only obvious difference between Eco, Comfort and Sport modes is what is displayed on the dashboard, not in this one though. Driving along in Comfort, makes the Audi exactly that, refines the ride slightly, the engine is incredibly quiet and you benefit from start-stop technology to help save fuel. Select Dynamic, or Sport mode, and the car becomes a different beast. It modifies throttle response, steering weighting and shift speeds in the S-Tronic version. Even the noise from the exhaust is adjusted to give it a racier sound. The nippy 2.0l engine also has a combined figure of 44.1 mpg, which I was impressed with considering the performance of the car. The TT does come with back seats, although I can’t say I’m entirely sure why. With plenty of room in the front for you and a passenger, you can’t really get a fully grown adult in the back, not with too much comfort anyway. It does, however have isofix points, meaning that it might be a bit of a squeeze, but you can safely get a child in there. Just as long as it’s a small one! The boot space on the TT is impressive, much bigger than I was expecting and enough room to head off for a week away, do the weekly shop and fit the pushchair in. Although maybe not all at once! Another key focus of Audi is to offer exceptional service, before, during and after purchasing your car. Their showrooms are light and airy, staff are

friendly, incredibly knowledgeable about all the cars they stock and you don’t get the feeling they want to pressure into anything. I dealt with Andrew Lacey from Listers in Worcester and cannot recommend him and them highly enough. There are a fair few gizmos to master on the TT and he patiently ran through it all with me to make sure I could benefit from all and spent the time to ensure I was more than happy before I departed. The coffee’s pretty good too! Audi have tried really hard with this model to ensure the TT is not only a great drive every day, but also a real, pure sports car and that the service they offer is as good as the cars they produce. In my opinion they have hit the nail on the head. s a freelance genealogist, he provides a complete range of services from one-off searches to full scale projects to trace family trees, all over the British Isles and in many countries abroad, from United States to Greece, and investigates all aspects of surname origins, heraldry, house histories and much more besides. He has researched, presented and appeared in many TV and Radio programmes about genealogy, which have helped the subject become the main-stream activity it is today. These have ranged from C4’s Extraordinary Ancestors to BBC1’s Gene Detectives which he co-presented with Melanie Sykes, and has made guest appearances on Who Do You Think You Are?
He has written 13 articles for The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and has written extensively on many aspects of history and family for a wide variety of publications, from The Sunday Times to Your Family Tree. His first book, Tracing Your Family History, was published by Collins in 2004. Since then he has written many other books, one Who Am I? The Family Tree Explorer, introducing genealogy to children, was ‘highly recommended’ recently on Blue Peter. Joan Griffis wrote in The New Gazette “of all the how-to-books I have ever seen, Adolph’s are the most beautiful”. Anthony has researched and presented information to a wide range of celebrities including Gary Lineker, Stephen Fry, Joanna Lumley, Michael Palin, JK Rowling, and in 2013 another family tree
took up a little more time than most . . . the family tree of H.R.H. the Duchess of Cambridge and her son H.R.H. Prince George. He is an enthusiastic speaker, well trained, with a wide range of experience, so this afternoon’s talk should be fascinating, not only to those setting out on their own family tree, but to anyone interested in ‘who we are’ and ‘where we come from’. He is particularly keen to answer questions and we plan to have ample time for this. He will have a number of books for sale, which he is happy to sign. Anthony, it transpires, is an 11th cousin once removed of the Duchess of Cambridge and a direct decedent of Thomas Cromwell, Earl of Essex, who introduced parish registrars to England in the 16 century.

Cream of the crop Independent Dodderhill Girls’ school tops the latest league tables for the region
I
ndependent girls’ school, Dodderhill School, in Droitwich Spa is celebrating being the ‘cream of the crop’ after topping the latest league tables.
Dodderhill was named the best performing school in the county for GCSEs in the league tables showing how Worcestershire’s secondary schools performed in the latest round of GCSE and A Levels, published on Thursday 29th January. The results revealed that 92 per cent of Dodderhill’s pupils achieved five A* to C grades, including English and maths, placing it firmly at the top of the table. Headmistress of Dodderhill School, Cate Mawston, said: “This is a fantastic result for Dodderhill. I am very proud of all of the girls that have contributed to this wonderful result.
“ Tomorrow I will be amazing.” At Dodderhill School in Droitwich, we believe that children can achieve anything, just as long as they have the support, nurturing and individual attention that every one of them deserves. That is perhaps why this is such a happy and friendly place for girls aged 0-16, and why our 2014 GCSE results have ranked Dodderhill as the best performing girls’ school in Worcestershire*.
What could your child achieve tomorrow? Visit www.dodderhill.co.uk or call 01905 778290.
“Dodderhill is deliberately small because it values the uniqueness of every individual child. It offers a bespoke education with excellent academic achievement – Dodderhill’s exam results are consistently amongst the best in Worcestershire. “At Dodderhill we adapt our curriculum to meet the needs of our pupils, not the other way around. This ensures everyone is challenged, stretched and stimulated at the appropriate level. It is not unusual for girls to take AS examinations with their GCSEs.” Mrs Mawston added: “We extend a warm invitation to you and your family to visit us and experience what makes Dodderhill School different. Our pupils have described Dodderhill School as “not just a school, but a family” and a “second home”. “The best way to appreciate the ‘Dodderhill difference’ is to visit us on a normal school day. The unique Dodderhill community needs to be seen in action to be truly appreciated.” Dodderhill School provides continuity of education for girls from six weeks to seven years old. The classes have no more than 16 pupils each and there are not more than two classes per year group. This is to enable tutors to acknowledge the uniqueness of every child and focus on their individual achievement. Restaurant owner turns waiter at Salvation Army dinner for the homeless
T
he owner of an upmarket Birmingham restaurant turned his hand to waiting on guests, at a special dinner for residents of The Salvation Army’s William Booth Centre. Itihaas on Fleet Street celebrated its ten year anniversary at the end of January by inviting 25 of the city’s most vulnerable people to dine on a menu of authentic Indian cuisine, carefully prepared by the restaurant’s chefs, and overseen by the owner’s mother. In an unusual and heartwarming twist, the guests were served not by waiters, but by the restaurant owner himself, Raj Rana, members of his family, his mentor Sanjay Anand MBE, and MP Mahmood. Former Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor John Lines, was also in attendance at the event. Mr Rana explained the reasons behind the gesture: “The Salvation Army does fantastic work and we really wanted to help with their efforts to rehabilitate people who are homeless. People who are homeless are all too often ignored or even turned away in our society; we wanted to welcome them to Itihaas and make them feel special. Inclusion is hugely important in breaking the cycle of homelessness.” Birmingham’s William Booth Centre on Shadwell Street provides a range of vital services for people who have fallen on hard times and find themselves living on the street.
As well as providing a place to stay, The Salvation Army centre places importance on helping people get back on their feet. Activities and workshops aim to develop skills and build confidence, with the eventual goal of facilitating self-reliance and access to job opportunities. Garry Murphy, service manager at the William Booth Centre, said: “There is no’ type’ of person who could become homeless. We see people from all walks of life whose lives have taken a turn for the worse. Many different factors are involved. Increasingly debt, joblessness and economic hardship can be seen as contributing to people ending up on the street. You could say that for many people they’re just one pay cheque away from homelessness.” He continued: “The dinner at Itihaas has been fantastic for our residents. Everyone at the restaurant did a great job in making them feel welcome and at home. Positive steps like this show that, no matter what they’ve been through, the future can be bright.” Itihass 18 Fleet Street Birmingham B3 1JL 0121 212 3383 www.itihaas.co.uk

The Addington Fund A farming charity that means business Ian Bell
74
www.edgemagazine.org
I
nspired by Canon Richard Addington, the Addington Fund first appeared in 2000 to support the pig farming community in East Anglia affected by the outbreak of classical swine fever. Richard did the job and the fund went into abeyance. In 2001 the then Archbishop of Canterbury wanted the church to respond to the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD); step forward Richard Addington who transferred his cash reserves, but more importantly passed on his ethos of providing practical and financial support alongside pastoral support. Based in Warwickshire on the site of the National Agricultural Centre, Addington came into contact with over 22,000 farming and rural businesses, distributing £10.3m at an operational cost of 1.4%. Fast forward 14 years; Addington is drawing to a close a similar type of response work on the Somerset Levels, supporting the farms severely affected by last year’s serious flooding. However, the focus of the Fund is now on the provision of housing for the farming community. In the aftermath of FMD, from data collected from over 22,000 applications for assistance, it was manifestly clear that some businesses would not survive. Not because of sloth or extravagance, but from the financial reality that the business was no longer sustainable. The major factor, for the tenanted sector; where on earth do we live. The Strategic Rural Housing Scheme was introduced to help families in such circumstances. A revolving property portfolio seeks to acquire properties,
on the open market, to meet the needs of individual families. Over the years a thread has evolved; to help a family to the maximum effect they need choice and in the vast majority of cases wish to remain in the local vicinity. Staying local allows children to remain in the catchment area of their current school, allows families to have the support of local family and friends and for those seeking further employment it is far easier in an area where they are known. And very importantly, for the wider community, it allows families to continue to contribute to the social fabric of their village. As time has gone by, it was becoming an increasingly grey area; is this a business struggling to be viable or a retirement issue? The answer was to widen the criteria to a farming family needing to exit their farm and in doing so losing their home. Other opportunities have been presented; barn conversions and work/live units, all with an aim to support the farming community. In Worcestershire, a landowner donated two open-market building plots and developers had to build at cost-resulting in two three-bed properties costing just over ÂŁ90,000 each. Why is Addington the charity that means business? Supporting businesses through difficult times, allowing farming families to exit their farms with dignity, but also a charity that has a business model. The charity has the ability to generate sufficient income from its own resources to cover all day-to-day running costs. Every donation received reaches the farming families for whom it is intended.

Quantitative easing in Europe What this really means Tom Ware
A
fter much speculation, the European Central Bank (ECB) finally announced that it would begin quantitative easing with immediate effect in January. The figures are eye-watering: the ECB will buy back €1.1 trillion in assets, including government bonds and EU institutions at a rate of around €60bn per month. The quantitative easing package has been long awaited and was greeted with enthusiasm by markets, which rose following the announcement. Nevertheless, there remain some reservations over the impact of quantitative easing on an economy. Some economists believe that it is largely ineffectual, while others believe that it may lead to long-term inflation. The theory behind quantitative easing is that central banks buy assets, such as government bonds, or high quality corporate using money that it has ‘printed’ (created electronically). It uses
this money to buy the assets from investors such as banks or pension funds. This is designed to increase the amount of cash in the financial system, encouraging financial institutions to lend more to businesses and individuals. This in turn should encourage them to invest and spend more, thereby boosting economic growth. Many look to the experience of the US and UK, where quantitative easing appears to have been effective and seems to have contributed to rising asset prices and confidence plus economic recovery. A recent Bank of England report estimated that the quantitative easing programme between March and November 2009 helped to boost the UK’s economy by between 1.5% and 2%. However, the largest quantitative easing programme remains that of Japan, where the results are still unclear.

What is the likely impact for the Eurozone? The quantitative easing programme has been put in place to relieve the deflationary pressures in the Eurozone economy. It has already contributed to a weakening in the Euro, which should ultimately have a positive effect on the Eurozone economy as a whole. If it acts to boost growth, this would be good news for the global economy – the Eurozone is the world’s second largest. But perhaps its most important function is to shore up confidence – that policymakers are committed to promoting growth, that they are committed to supporting the currency union whatever it takes and that they will continue to do ‘whatever it takes’. There are other considerations, however. The Greek elections and the election of the anti-austerity Syriza party have thrown the political situation in the Eurozone into disarray. Antiausterity parties appear to be gaining traction in other places such as Spain. This may ultimately undo some of the good work achieved by quantitative easing. The impact on asset markets is not entirely predictable: However, quantitative easing would usually push up the market price of government bonds by increasing demand. This reduces the income available on those bonds. When it has been introduced elsewhere, it has usually proved positive for stock markets. European shares were one of the worst performers in 2014, and investors will be hoping for a better year in 2015.
Currency market volatility One of the key side-effects of quantitative easing is greater volatility in currency markets. The Euro has already dropped significantly since quantitative easing seemed assured and many are predicting further depreciation. For some years now, currency markets have been relatively benign as interest rate policy in the major developed markets of the Eurozone, Japan, the US and UK all headed in the same direction. Now, however, the US and UK look likely to tighten rates, while Japan and the Eurozone continue to announce measures to stimulate their flagging economies. Currency markets are at the forefront of this. Equally, at a time of low global growth, currency devaluation remains a key way for governments to boost economic growth (because exports become more competitive) and there is likely to be more ‘competitive devaluation’ from countries struggling to generate growth. A stronger sterling may be good for holidaymakers, but it has implications for investors. Currency is likely to make a greater impact on investment returns over the next few years. Last year, much of the difference between the performance of the US and European markets could be attributed to currency considerations and this disparity is likely to continue. It means that hose investing in global markets need to be more alert to currency considerations.

Colourful, raised and flat work pictorial panels, fine white and polychrome samplers and dress accessories will be included in the exhibition. The embroideries were created through individual use of stitches, colourful silks, metal threads, pearls and semi-precious stones. The exhibition also includes a remarkable casket that was formerly in the collection of HRH Princess Margaret. It is covered with beautifully worked embroidered panels depicting stories from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The embroideries illustrate the themes and concerns which occupied the minds of the young women making them. They often depict biblical stories at a time when religious issues, including the use of images, aroused great controversy. The exhibition will be on display at the Ashmolean Museum Broadway on the High Street until 7th June 2015. The museum and shop are open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Admission charges apply.
