Victory for local elderly and homeless Local charities supporting the homeless, those with mental illness and other vulnerable residents are celebrating after local Conservative cuts were halted – for now. Lib Dems and many others campaigned to stop these cruel cuts. Local Conservatives proposed these cuts back in November last year. This led to a long period of anxiety for many. The cuts were halted due to use of “one-off” money. This means there isn’t a longterm commitment. Was the decision just because it is an election year?

£1.5m boost to local schools– Lib Dem promise kept The “pupil premium” was a Lib Dem promise at the General Election, and a key part of the Coalition agreement. As a result local schools will now get £430 for every child eligible for free school meals. This can be spent on extra 1:1 tuition, breakfast clubs or whatever the school feels appropriate. The amount will rise each year, and be worth £2.5bn a year.
“School funding has been protected, and this extra funding is great news” says Lisa Northover, local councillor and mother of four.
Conservative value for money: costs us an extra £2.4m a year!
It is hard to believe it but local Conservatives have forced through a “money saving” deal that will cost local taxpayers £2.4m million more to run some council services. They paid a further £2m in consultants’ advice to get this “deal.” Independent experts have backed the Lib Dem view this

IMAX fiasco
The local Conservatives have spent £8.5m of our money on the IMAX, with no real plan as to what to do next. The Conservatives have been forced to admit “it could be 5 to 10 years before a developer comes along.” This is as good as saying nothing is likely to happen. In the mean time businesses are leaving the building so it is becoming an empty, white elephant. Lowering the roof will help improve the view – but cost more money when Day centres and Countryside services are being decimated. The consultation exercise of what should replace the site was a sham. Despite the economic situation now is the time to aspire for a better Bournemouth. It is not the time to waste money and force cuts to frontline services, but that is exactly what is happening. We need a new politics at the Town Hall, that: •Makes your Council Tax go further •Ends the “Council knows best, Council must control” approach •Opens up the council decision making & increases community involvement •Has genuine partnership with private & voluntary sectors to cut costs and improve our Town The standing of local councillors has never been lower. We believe it’s time for change. Lib Dem candidates come from all walks of life.We are more representative of Bournemouth’s residents, and have experience to speak up for you.
There is a better way… To run the Council
• Appoint key councillor posts on ability, rather than party.
For jobs and business
• Work with neighbouring councils and business to market the area for high skilled jobs in creative industries, financial services, education & health, as well as developing more apprenticeships.
For growing up
• Supporting better schools and youth services. This includes tackling the impact of Townsend School closure that has led to cramped schools for a generation of children across Bournemouth.
Give more support and say to local groups especially on planning issues
• Stop over development and protect family housing from uncontrolled conversion to houses in multiple occupation. •More home insulation & more solar panels to cut costs and carbon. •To protect the greenbelt
Ensure street cleaning teams are locally accountable.
To spend your money
• Cutting the waste of the last four years – such as money saving deals that cost taxpayers £2m more a year! • Cut the number of councillors and huge pay rise the Tories gave themselves
For a green & pleasant town
For a caring community • Working to support voluntary, and community sector, and reversing the Tory social care cuts only temporarily postponed.
To get around town
•Promote cycling and bus travel •Residents’ parking schemes where requested •Better scheduling of roadworks
UPGRADE OUR POLITICS ON MAY 5TH Fed up with our “past its’ best” voting system, and the politics we get? With Alternative Vote (AV) you’ll get:
HARDER WORKING MPs With a fairer vote system MPs will need to win 50% of votes in their constituency. At the moment MPs often get less than half of people actually supporting them. With a new system they will need to work harder to get more support. EVERY VOTE REALLY COUNTS Fair votes means an end to tactical voting. Instead you actually vote for what you want. It’s simple: list the candidates in the order you like them: 1, 2, 3 etc. Your vote is never wasted. We have a historic opportunity on May 5th to make politicians work for us, by saying YES to fair votes.
LET’S ALL SAY “YES” TO FAIRER VOTES ON MAY 5TH Find out more and how to help: www.yestofairervotes.org
