returned as our Old Scholar Keynote speaker. I have included his reflection below. I had the enormous privilege of returning to my old school, Adelaide High School, some 50 years after leaving, to speak at their leadership assembly. Welcome to the 2020 school year. A special welcome to the families of Year 8 students. We have had a very positive start to the year and I thank you again for your partnership and support. The term has been extremely busy and filled with a range of diverse experiences, both within the classroom and through co-curricular programs and clubs. Our first newsletter for 2020 highlights many of these experiences and showcases the outcomes our students achieve. I acknowledge our staff returning to Adelaide High in ongoing positions and in contract positions. We have a number of new staff members joining us this year and it is with pleasure that I introduce them to you: • Chelsea Sawley - Bilingual School Support Officer • Andrea Facheris – Literacy Intervention Officer • Pamella Mesquita – Learning Intervention teacher • Isaac Aitken – English teacher • Sam Beales – Outdoor Education teacher • Nick Joy – HPE teacher • Jayce Golding – English teacher • Annie Matsouliadis – English teacher • Jasmine Christie-Rosser – Drama and English teacher • Kathleen Meyers – Accounting teacher • Edward Bonner – Science teacher • Melissa Phillips – Teacher of the Deaf • David Tamlyn – Science teacher • Maddi O’Brien-Dent – Art and RP teacher (rejoins us after 2 years leave) One of the many highlights of the last few weeks was our annual Leadership Assembly. It was an opportunity to watch our students shine and embrace both formal and informal leadership opportunities at Adelaide High. Des Penny, Co-CEO Proteus Leadership,

Several hundred student leaders, teachers, assistant principals, parents and the graduating class of 2019 were in attendance, along with local politician, Peter Malinauskas MP and the senior leaders of the school led by Principal, Cezanne Green. Two things really stood out to me during my visit: 1. How incredibly positive and proactive the school was in celebrating who they were and their commitment to creating a great learning culture. 2. How hungry the students were for leadership, seeking insight into how they could be better leaders. The motto of the school is not only for school but for life and I truly sensed that this was exactly what was being communicated by the staff and adopted by the students. During the presentation I spoke about my underwhelming academic record and some of the humorous things that I could still remember after 50 years, albeit at times the students looked at me as if I was an alien. “What do you mean there were no computers and mobile phones?” It really makes you appreciate what has changed in that short period of time. During my presentation to the students I spoke about what I believe are the keys to becoming a successful leader, both at school and in life, and they are: • Insight – Learning to respond rather than react • Integrity – Being honest and transparent • Privilege – Never forgetting the privilege of leadership • Ask WHY? – Foster a spirit of discovery • Be Brave – Sometimes we win & sometimes we learn • Don’t wait for opportunities – Look for them & grab them

FROM THE PRINCIPAL (continued) • Be Grateful – Look at what you have, NOT what you don’t have Some of the feedback blew my mind like, “sir you changed my life today.” Whether we are at school, or well into our leadership life, these qualities are still as relevant as ever and I hope that time does not stop us from also seeking ways to be better leaders. So, to all of the students and staff at Adelaide High School, thank you for the privilege, you have certainly taught me a lot and I am deeply humbled by the experience. Learning is at the heart of Adelaide High School and our strong culture and proud ethos; not only for school, but for life, provide the conditions for rich learning to occur. At AHS, we are committing to a revitalised pedagogical approach (the ‘how’ of teaching), one that is underpinned by modern research and reflects contemporary learning. Teachers are working towards a 3D pedagogical approach: Direct, Dialogic and Discover, that supports explicit teaching, intentional dialogue and independent discovery. Our next student free day in March will provide staff with professional learning around this concept.

PREFECT SEMINAR On Tuesday, February 4, the 2020 Prefects met for their first meeting of the year, the Prefect Seminar. The Seminar allowed us to discuss what we would like as Prefects to achieve in 2020 at Adelaide High School, and most importantly, it was a perfect opportunity to socialize and get to know one another.

The profits gained from other fundraising events (BBQs, casual days etc) will be contributed to AHS-related projects.

Chaired by our Head Prefects, Maaike and Jack, the seminar begun by discussing what we, as the Prefects for 2020, want to accomplish for the year to come, and how as a group we can be remembered in future years (for good reasons, obviously). The majority of the seminar was spent brainstorming what school events we should run. After long deliberation, it was decided that the Prefects will run a car boot sale to raise money for the Australian bushfire appeal, specifically for those affected by the bushfires on Kangaroo Island.

Finally, we worked in our committee groups for the year, such as the Melbourne and MacRob Exchange committees, and various other fundraising committees.

We were also individually assigned Year 8 and Year 9 Pastoral Care classes to visit once a week to provide as much support as possible for the younger students.

However, the major takeaway from the seminar was that the 2020 Prefects are all determined and dedicated to making this school year great. George Rutty | Prefect

PERFORMING ARTS NEWS The Arts at Adelaide High School have started 2020 with much excitement. The Performing Arts staff have relocated into the new learning area and are exploring contemporary practice in their teaching. Student leaders were inducted at the recent Leadership Assembly and have since been working closely with ensemble staff to be the conduit between student and teacher, warming up the ensemble and undertaking rehearsals with their peers. These leaders have also taken guests on tours and speak passionately about how much they love their new space and the learning they do in all Arts subjects. To that end, we were given some excellent feedback from parents who attended the inaugural morning tea with the Principal. We have added to the school website a detailed calendar of term 1 events and included the forthcoming performance dates to assist families with planning. https://www.adelaidehs.sa.edu.au/co-curricular/the-arts/ performing-arts-calendar We have also added our co-curricular rehearsal times and staff responsible for the programs, so parents can plan before and after school activities much easier. If your child is keen to participate we hope this provides you the opportunity to know who to contact should you wish to receive more information. https://www.adelaidehs.sa.edu.au/Co-Curricular/The-Arts/cocurricular-session-times The Arts have embraced the Festival and Fringe season taking students to see live performances. Year 12 Drama and Creative Arts saw Dance Nation, performed by the State Theatre. Year 11 Drama students explored technology and lighting in Patch’s performance

Adelaide High School Newsletter

“The Lighthouse” and Year 9 Drama students will visit Tandanya for the installation Yabarra. Thank you to the staff who work extra hard to provide theatrical opportunities for our students. Music students attended a workshop with guest speaker Michael Griffin. He reinforced to our students that a learning mindset and deliberate practice has the greatest influence on progress in their performance on their instruments. It is about the quantity and quality of practice time that develops skills. His salient advice will be further explored by the staff on music camp. Ms Kerry Skinner| Leader: The Arts

5 SWIMMING CARNIVAL The annual Interhouse Swimming Carnival was held on Thursday, February 20 at the Adelaide Aquatics Centre. This year the extended pool time saw the inclusion of new events including multiple heats for the U14s in 25m freestyle and new novelty events - the Body Board Relay and the Ping Pong Scramble. All of these allowed for greater student participation. There were also a number of outstanding swimming performances throughout the day. Congratulations to the individual age group winners and runners up for their outstanding performances. Congratulations to the following students who set new records in the following events: • U15 Boys 50m Freestyle: Rei Tanaka 27.14 • U15 Boys 50m Breaststroke: Rei Tanaka 33.78

WELCOME TO FRENCH ASSISTANT CHLOE DU Bienvenue! Adelaide High School would like to welcome Chloe Du from Paris who will be working with our school community every Wednesday and Thursday this year as the French assistant. This is a wonderful opportunity to have an assistant. Chloe will be working with middle school students of French as well as tutoring our senior school students who are preparing for their French exams. Chloe has

only been in Adelaide for a couple of weeks and is already enjoying her new life ‘down under’. If you see Chloe around school, say ‘Bonjour’…and strike up a conversation in French or in English! To Chloe, ‘Bon séjour en Australie’ ! Enjoy your stay in Australia. Ms Mireille LeDolédec | Teacher of French

SUPPORTING TRANSITIONS 2020 – the start of a new decade, and back to school for another year! For most this means changes, whether that be challenging new subjects, different teachers, a shift in locker location, or for some, starting as a new student at the school. For me, one of the biggest changes has been taking on the role as Pastoral Care Worker solo as Andrew Babirat takes a year of leave. With all of these types of shifts I have come to understand that there is a difference between change - a shift in external situations – and transition - the processing and response to change. Situational changes

are part of life and each of us cope with these in different ways. Transitions, the adaptive processes, can however take some time. Having a challenge mindset is a help as it allows us to see the growth opportunities and deal more positively with the stress that might come with the transition. Another form of assistance can be being able to talk about these changes as a way of processing them. My role as the Pastoral Care Worker in the school means that I am someone students can talk to as they go through the transition

that comes with changes they may face, such as school situations, friendship changes or family concerns. Other ways I support students to make connections, which help with transitional times, are through the Thursday Morning Breakfast and Thursday Tabletop Games. I generally work Tuesdays and Thursdays, and students can email me or come to my office area (in the back of the Library) to arrange a time to meet and talk. Ms Bec Burfitt | Pastoral Care Worker

Adelaide High School Open Night Wednesday 18 March 2020, 4.30pm – 8.00pm Special entry programs in languages, cricket and rowing. See the school website for further details and bookings.

7 AMY WORSWICK: 2020 VITAE MEDALIST Amy was a student at Adelaide High School from 1985 – 1989. Amy worked in the Bookroom/Library during the school holidays throughout her time at Adelaide High and continued this while she studied at University. Amy went on to study at the University of Adelaide and was appointed to Adelaide High School as an SSO in 1996 and worked in the Library and the Bookroom. Having completed her Diploma of Teaching, Amy accepted a contract position at Adelaide High School from January 2008 and was permanently appointed to Adelaide High School in 2010. During her time at Adelaide High Amy

has supervised school sport teams and participated in many MacRob exchanges. Amy was involved with scoring and calculating statistics for Cricket at the school, including the Five Highs Cricket Carnivals.

Over many years, Amy has given countless voluntary hours to support the school and students. Ms Cez Green | Principal

She has supported countless Outdoor Education camps and excursions and established the school’s Maths Club. In partnership with the school’s groundsman, Amy established a recycling programme for the school. Amy has been a member of the Old Scholars Conversazione team for many years and has served on the Old Scholars Committee.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP TRAINING DAY Braving the dreary weather and having to return to school on January 21 before the academic year commenced, the first test this year’s student leaders faced was finding the energy (and courage) to arrive at 8.40am, while still in summer holiday mode. The Student Leadership Training program, intended to foster discussion of ideas, initiatives and possible improvements to the school within each leadership group, has become a yearly tradition for the ambitious cohort. Throughout the day, many opportunities were provided for student leaders to become familiar with one another, strengthen their leadership skills and jumpstart plans for the upcoming year.

to the role, and the necessity of teamwork for success. We then participated in a few exercises to stimulate our minds and develop our quick thinking and public speaking skills, with students being given a topic and needing to present a minute presentation with no research, as well as come up with a fundraising idea for the recent bushfire devastation relief. This encouraged everyone to put forward creative ideas and get out of their comfort zones to solve problems effectively. Subsequently, the skills and knowledge we had quickly developed were put to the test, with groups splitting up to attempt event planning.

To kickstart the morning, we were led through a presentation about the significance of student leadership at Adelaide High School, which gave us valuable insight into what it means to be a leader, the importance of our commitment

Afterwards, we had the chance to work in our respective leadership groups, planning agendas, forming committees and establishing goals to work towards throughout the year.

The final planning session was centered around House groups, with each team fervently brainstorming strategies and tactics to win the coveted SJ Dowdy Cup. The student leaders began the year in quite a strong position, and the team of people on the day really proved to be a strong, determined and focused group, who all possessed innovative and original ideas that will really make 2020 a year to remember. The day, however, would not have been possible without the amazing efforts of many staff members who worked tirelessly to organize such a helpful, valuable event for us to take part in. The enthusiasm, collaboration and dedication shown by all provided a very promising outlook on leadership at Adelaide High School for the upcoming year. Charlotte-May Fleming | Prefect

STUDENT PATHWAYS UPDATE Welcome and Welcome back to all! I would like to share with you some interesting statistics that the Hon J Gardner MP Minister for Education released on December 17, 2019: 2019 has seen a record 2,815 students complete a VET Certificate III as part of their SACE, compared with 2,488 in 2018.” This translates to 43.4% of SACE completers included VET in their studies.” He said “I am encouraged by the record numbers of students that have included VET as part of their SACE this year, and our VET for School Students policy will continue to ensure that VET qualifications are further aligned with industry needs and are ensuring job outcomes for our young people. According to the 2019 SACE data for our school, Adelaide High School had higher than the state average for Certificate III and higher completions in 2019. In addition, 10% of the 2019 cohort used VET to complete their SACE. I am so proud of the achievements of all of last year’s students and thankful for the support we receive from each of the Registered Training Organisations with whom we work. 2020 is going to be another busy year! Feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance.

2020 VET enrolments Nearly all Years 10 – 12 VET students have commenced their training, which is conducted at a number of Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). Upon successful completion of all requirements to a satisfactory level, students either secure SACE Stage 1 or 2 credits, in addition to their qualification / statement of attainment. Most full Certificate III qualifications can assist in ATAR generation, needed for university entrance. The chosen 2020 full Certificate III qualifications are: Business, Fitness, Screen and Media (Games Design), Screen and Media (Visual Effects), Sport and Recreation, Information Technology, Animal Studies, Visual Arts (Painting and Drawing), Make Up, Food Processing and Christian Ministry and Theology. Students have also enrolled in these courses, which attract Stage 2 credits: • Digital Photography and Lighting, from Certificate III Visual Arts (Photo-imaging) • Plumbing Plus (from Certificate III Roof Plumbing) • Certificate II Automotive Servicing Technology

Adelaide High School Newsletter

The chosen Certificate II training courses, which offer Stage 1 credits, are: • Certificate II Information Technology • Certificate II Electro-technology (Career Start) • Certificate II Construction Pathways • Certificate II Engineering Pathways • Certificate II Horticulture • Certificate II Salon Assistant • Certificate I Construction (Plumbing) / Certificate I Construction • Certificate II Animal Studies / Certificate I Animal Studies • The Basics to Retail Cosmetics (a ten week course)

Other training opportunities The Rosewater Trade Training Centre offers a midyear intake for Certificate II Construction Pathways. Interested, eligible students (who are over 16 years) will need to see me very soon to ascertain if they meet all criteria and then to enrol, as this course fills very quickly. Other Semester 2 intake courses will be advertised soon. I have invited students in Years 10 – 12 to enroll in the Queensford College short courses advertised for Term 1 and the coming April holidays, namely RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) for students who are 18 years or almost 18 years), Barista and First Aid. There will be more training opportunities advertised later in the semester. Whilst there are no SACE credits on offer, they add to skill sets and supplement résumés. I will also advertise the details for the Construction Industry White Card course as soon as they are available. For all courses I request the prompt return of completed paperwork and contact with the Finance office at Adelaide High School so that I can secure a place.

Important reminders Students are reminded that undertaking VET takes priority over all other commitments or they run the risk of falling behind and incurring extra fees. Many RTOs have advised that they will also charge late submission fees to students who submit work and log books past stipulated due dates, especially the final due date of mid-November, 2020. Students who ignore final deadlines will be unable to have their results entered and counted for the 2020 academic year. It is crucial that Year 12s observe due dates, to allow for work to be marked, results to be entered and copies of verified documents to be sent to the SACE Board of SA. This is vital for SACE and ATAR generation for those students.

This term students who have their regular VET course on Tuesdays must attend as normal, even though there may be a special event at school, such as the Student Free Day on Tuesday, 10 March and Athletics Carnival on Tuesday, 24 March. This applies to VET students who have allocated training on the evening of Wednesday March 18, when we will have our Open Night. VET students who need to complete structured work placement as a compulsory part of their course and who are planning to organise a placement for the coming April holidays, must provide me with the completed Workplace Learning Agreement Form by the start of Week 8, Monday, March 16. Only students who have completed the specified online workplace safety course and provided me with a copy of their certificate of completion by March 16 will be permitted to undertake work placement. I wish all the enrolled VET students all the best for their training. I remind all students and families that communication, full regular attendance, engagement and perseverance are crucial to their training success.

Career Expos The annual Tertiary Studies & Career Expo Adelaide (TSCEA), incorporating the SA Work & Skills Expo, will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Sunday April 5 from 10am – 4pm and Monday April 6 between 9.30am – 2.30pm. 2020 marks the 11th anniversary of this event. Young people will be able to talk to representatives from a variety of institutions. Parents / carers are welcome. For more information, visit https://www. careersevent.com/event/adelaide-careersevent/

The Adelaide Careers & Employment Expo will be held on Friday May 22 from 9am to 3pm and Saturday May 23 from 10am to 4pm. It is a leading careers, training and education and employment event in SA, which offers the opportunity for students, job seekers and career changers to connect with organisations for guidance, clarity and opportunities in relation to career options. There will be over 100 exhibitors

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE Adelaide High School will again be involved in the Premier’s Reading Challenge this year. The Premier’s Reading Challenge is a literacy engagement program which was introduced by the Premier to encourage students to read more books, enjoy reading and to improve literacy levels. The Challenge requires students to read 12 books between the beginning of the school year and early September. As well as developing students’ reading and literacy skills, participants also gain House points for the SJ Dowdy Cup. Reading Record Sheets and information have been emailed to all students and the record sheets can be filled in electronically this year. Hard copies will also be available. The PRC website is http://www.premiersreadingchallenge.sa.edu.au/ prc/pages/home and on there students will have access to the reading lists. In an effort to support students in title selection, the Library’s fiction collection has been genrified and we are already seeing the benefits of the reorganisation of the collection. We encourage all students to be involved in the Challenge and ask parents / carers to support this initiative and encourage their child to read at home.
