- one specialising in Special Education and the other in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education. I also have my Certificate IV in Auslan. I will bring my personal experiences to this role as I am hard of hearing. As a student I also attended a Centre for Hearing Impaired.
It has been a delight to show families around our beautiful school each week as part of our scheduled principal tours. Adelaide High School really does have a heartbeat and soul, tangible when you see our students engaging in learning and building the skills and capabilities that will help them thrive, ‘not only for school but for life’. It is with pleasure that I welcome to our school, our new CHI Coordinator, Ms Amy Geue.

My name is Amy Geue and I am replacing Tanya McKinna as the Centre for Hearing Impaired (CHI) Coordinator. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I have been working in Deaf education for over 12 years and I have a wealth of knowledge and experience. For the past two and a half years I have been the Coordinator of the Centre for Hearing Impaired at Avenues College (formerly Windsor Gardens Secondary College). I have completed two Masters of Education
I am very passionate about the teaching and learning of Deaf and hard of hearing students. I am also dedicated to ensuring that teachers and BSSOs actively work together in developing a positive learning environment where students are engaged, empowered and challenged in their learning. The design of our new Performing Arts Centre is progressing really well and our entire Performing Arts team, in partnership with Mr Jim Dounas and Mr Graham Cox, have been engaged in influencing the design of the space. We are really looking forward to having a contemporary space with a Music studio and a Dance/Drama studio. You will see, throughout this newsletter, staff and students engaged in a range of curricular and co-curricular activities that build in our students, skills and capabilities that will enable them to thrive in life beyond school. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and partnership. Kind regards, Ms Cez Green | Principal

GREECE STUDY TOUR 2018 Between April 17 and May 5, 12 very fortunate students, led by Ms Axarlis and Mr Spyrou, were taken on the tour of a lifetime. We spent two and a half weeks touring the fantastic sites that Greece has to offer, the likes of Athens, Delphi, Corinth and Thessaloniki to name but a few. Students also had the opportunity to take part in an educational school exchange with our Sister School, the 7th High School of Corfu. Famous natural sites like the waterfalls of Edessa provided us with a beautiful return to nature, after having experienced the sheer magnitude of cosmopolitan Athens and Thessaloniki. Aside from the touring, along the way, every student was also able to accomplish their own individual goals; for some, learning the language and taking in the sites for the very first time, and for others making enduring friendships with students from the sister school. After touring mainland Greece for the first week and a half of our journey, we were all excited, but also nervous, to meet our homestay families, who at the time, we were unfamiliar with. Despite this, however, they greeted us with open arms and provided a warm welcome and loving home for us to stay in for the remainder of our journey. Corfu provided a taste of the authentic Greek cuisine, way of life and rich history that the island has to offer away from the tourist areas. It was an amazing experience for all involved, and was an incredible opportunity to see how a group of students could unite in such a short amount of time, using the Greek language to form deep bonds with new people and to navigate themselves through the busy roads and bustling markets of Athens. On behalf of everyone on the trip, we express our deepest thanks to our host families in Corfu, with whom we have become lifelong friends, to the Greek Parents Association of Adelaide High School who generously subsidised the trip, and also to Ms Anna Axarlis and Mr Manuel Spyrou who organised the trip and supported us throughout this incredible cultural experience. 3 PREFECTS YEAR 9 SOCCER CHALLENGE Congratulations to 9R14 who defeated 9V128 (1-0) to take out the Prefects’ Year 9 Soccer Challenge this year. All Year 9 Pastoral Care classes participated in the event which is designed to engage students in sport and fitness, while also promoting some healthy
inter-house and inter-class rivalry. Congratulations to all the students who represented their classes in the competition and thank you to the Prefects for organising and running the event.
VINNIES SCHOOL SLEEPOUT 55 students and 3 staff participated in a Vinnies School Sleepout last Friday night in The Plaza and The Hub at school. Like those CEO’s who participate in the CEO Sleepout, the staff and students got a glimpse into the realities of homelessness by ‘sleeping rough’ for a night to raise awareness and funds for Vinnies homelessness services. It was certainly a cold night but we kept warm with soups prepared by the Victory Church and bread supplied by Bakers Delight Brighton.
During the evening we heard first hand experiences of those doing it tough, which brought home to the students the realities of the difficulties suffered by many in our community. Its not too late to support our Vinnies School Sleepout. Please support our efforts by making a secure online donation to one of our House teams. • https://ahsadey.gofundraise.com.au • https://ahsmacghey.gofundraise.com.au • https://ahsmorriss.gofundraise.com.au • https://ahswest.gofundraise.com.au Thanks so much for your support!

AUSTRALIA’ BIGGEST MORNING TEA FOR AHS STAFF The Adelaide High School staff held our annual morning tea to raise funds for the Cancer Council SA on Tuesday May 22, with the Staff Association organising catering for this event. The Cancer Council does a wonderful job of impacting those affected by cancer, and the money raised supports cancer research, prevention and support. 2018 marks the 25th year of this fundraiser. Last year, the simple act of South Australians hosting a morning tea raised $1.1 million locally and contributed to $11.9 million raised nationally. I am so impressed by the generosity of our staff, as this year we almost doubled the amount raised in 2017. This year we raised $1,434.40, compared to $747.15 last year. Thanks to all my colleagues who participated and donated so generously, and to everyone who assisted with the preparation of the event. Ms Livia D’Aloia | ABMT Host for Adelaide High School
YEAR 8/9 KNOCKOUT NETBALL The Netball season is well and truly underway and the first Knockout competition didn’t disappoint. Nine Year 8/9 girls represented Adelaide High School at Henley Beach, competing against strong sides in St Michaels and Nazareth College in Round 1. The first game was played against Nazareth and, although a little slow to start, the Adelaide High School girls dominated the play in the second half of the match, winning both quarters. Alex Georgantas and Poppy Gilfillian-Silk shot consistently, bringing the margin back to just 8 points in the last quarter. The second game however, saw our players a little out-matched in most areas. To their credit, they held their own and took back control of the match against St Michaels in the second half. For a group of girls who had not played together prior to the competition, they did very well. Evidently, there is much talent coming through for Netball, a sign for a strong Open squad in the years to come. A great day and well done to the following players involved; Alex Georgantas, Noella Hebhardt, Millie Shipton, Amy Frisby-Smith, Poppy Gilfillan-Silk, Marisa Doufos, Tijana Turic, Vassiliki Kontopoulos, and Darcy Kavanagh Ms Ashleigh Bandiera | Netball Coach
STUDENT PATHWAYS UPDATE Career Exploration and Planning: Expos and Open Days I went along to The Adelaide Careers and Employment Expo at the Wayville Showgrounds on Saturday, 26 May and I found it very informative! If you went along, I hope you enjoyed it too.
Adelaide High School Newsletter
There were so many exhibits from a plethora of organisations - our four universities, tafeSA, private Registered Training Organisations, Group Training Organisations (like Maxima), how to apply for government jobs / traineeships, volunteer organisations etc. There was even an area where one could get career advice and assistance with résumé writing.
I was also really impressed by the large Defence Force exhibit. There was lots to see and lots of people to talk to about their endless opportunities on offer. The Defence exhibit included displays from The Force behind the Defence Force, which you may have seen advertised in the media recently. There were also representatives
5 STUDENT PATHWAYS UPDATE with lots of information, including brochures and pamphlets, from private defence companies, such as SAAB Australia, Navantia, Finncantieri, BAE Systems, Raythion and Lockheed Martin. This event is run in May annually and is open to people of all ages. It complements The Tertiary Studies and Career Expo, which our Year 10s attend at the Adelaide Convention Centre each April, as part of their PLP work. Hopefully, if you missed one or both of these events this year, you can always go along next year. Our students and parents / carers are cordially invited to the East Adelaide Career Expo, which will be held at Marden Senior College on Thursday, 16 August from 12 noon till 1.30pm. There will be representatives from the universities, tafeSA, The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA), the Motor Trade Association (MTA), Maxima, the International College of Hotel Management (ICHM), the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Association, Chartered Accountants ANZ, Tabor College, CDW Studios, Clip Joint and the Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE). In the next few weeks the universities and other local institutions will be advertising their annual Open Days, which will take place in August. Once again, people of all ages (including parents and carers) can participate, gather information, view the facilities and talk to representatives. Purchased VET courses Several students have enrolled in Semester 2 VET courses or courses that will commence in Semester 2 and conclude next year. Students who complete all the requirements to a satisfactory standard will earn SACE credits, develop industry skills, start to develop industry contacts and strengthen their employability skills. So far our students will be doing: • The Basics to Retail Cosmetics (Media Make Up Academy) • 3D Games Design and Digital Effects (Marden Senior College) • Certificate II Game Programming Foundations (AIE) • Certificate III Hospitality (Salford College) – to conclude next year. • Certificate II Automotive Servicing Technology (QAT) – to conclude next year. VET students who are doing full year or Semester 2 courses need to ensure that all work is completed by mid-November to enable marking, resulting and the uploading of results to Schools Online by school staff. This includes the required number of work placement hours / shifts, if applicable, to your child’s particular VET course and the submission of the completed Log Book to their trainer. Observing this deadline
is particularly crucial for Year 12 students who need to finalise their SACE and secure an ATAR, if they wish to consider tertiary study for 2019. It is also important to Year 10 and 11 students as well, as sometimes some RTOs charge extra fees to mark work or conduct assessments submitted past the stipulated due dates.
VET Food Processing Pathway In Semester 2 a group of Year 11 Adelaide High School students will undertake four units in Certificate II Food Processing, which are integrated into Home Economics. The course will be delivered at school by Ms Nikiforos and is run in collaboration with tafeSA. As part of the Term 3 course counselling process, current Year 10 students will be able to select this subject for 2019, for which they will earn 20 Stage 1 credits, and current Year 10 students will be able to select the Year 10 subject, which will earn them 10 Stage 1 credits. Please see me, Ms Nikiforos or Ms Kriaris if you have any queries about this opportunity.
School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) Any vacancies that come up in different areas are circulated to students, so it is important for prospective students who wish to get into a trade to update their résumé and perhaps consider doing work experience to get some initial exposure to an industry of their choice. Ask your son / daughter to see me to discuss options and to receive the paperwork. Part of the paperwork includes completing a booklet, designed to ensure they understand their rights and obligations in terms of workplace safety. Doing this training is a compulsory cross-sector requirement. I will pass on to the students concerned the Adelaide High School Workplace Safety Booklet, in addition to the Workplace Learning Agreement Form, which must be completed and submitted to me before any placement can be confirmed.
Week 10 of Term 2 In summary, I urge anyone with any queries to make a time to see me very soon. I would like to have processed all VET enrolments, short course applications and workplace learning paperwork by the start of Week 10, Monday 2 July. I will be unable to process paperwork on the last day of term, July 6. Places in VET courses, short courses and even school holiday work placement positions fill quickly, so it is best to get in

NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY (NCCD) All schools are required to collect information about the numbers of students that they provide adjustments to under the Disability Discrimination Act (1992) and Disability Standards of Education (2005). From 2018, this data will be used as the basis for national funding. The NCCD involves the collection of; • the number of students receiving adjustments to enable them to participate in education on the same basis as other students • the level of adjustment provided to students • student’s type of disability if known
Under the model the definition of disability is broad and includes learning difficulties, health and mental health conditions. If your child is identified for inclusion in the Collection, the required information will be included in this year’s data collection. If you have any questions about the data collection, please contact Liz Horrocks on 81100472. Further information can be found at: http://www.education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-dataschool-students-disability. Dr Liz Hrrocks | Senior Leader: Learner Intervention
