It has been an extremely busy and very rewarding last few weeks. Our senior students, in partnership with their teachers, have been busy finalising assignments and exams. At the time of writing this article, several cricket students, accompanied by Mr Phil Hopton and Mr Jeremy Appleton, have flown to Brisbane to participate in the Five Highs Cricket Carnival. Two teams have departed for their World Challenge to Borneo under the leadership of Ms Dimitra Rozaklis, Mr Peter Hatcliffe, Ms Jess James and Mr Michael Gurr. Ms Kerry Skinner, Ms Michaela Moors and Mr Tim Moors, in partnership with approximately 90 students, are undertaking the final rehearsals for Grease the musical, which will be performed this week. We also welcomed our 300 Year 7 students and their families at Year 7 Transition Day on Monday. If that’s not enough, Mr Glen Little, Mr Alex Garlick and Ms Hannah Wallace Yarrow are in Melbourne for Volleyball and our ISEC students, under the leadership of Ms Chris Goularas and Mr Jim Dounas, are preparing for their annual camp on Thursday. It is impossible to capture all of the things that occur in just a few weeks at Adelaide High, and there are many highlights. I would like to mention just a few: •

A media launch celebrating Sami’s ‘Song Writer of the Year’ Award, coordinated by Ms Kerry Skinner, Mr Tim Moors and the Performing Arts team in partnership with the Prefects was excellent and showcased our new Performing Arts centre beautifully.

Our inaugural Year 12 Graduation, held last month, provided the opportunity for our students and parents to celebrate their time at Adelaide High.
•
We have officially signed off on our PA Centre and will take the time to set it up over the next few weeks. An official opening will be scheduled for Term 1 2020.
•
Mr Taly Trayans received a welldeserved ACHPER Award celebrating his commitment to PE as part of the PE Week celebrations.
•
Our Year 10 students began Research Practices as an important segue to Research Project. Thank you to Ms Cass Mewett for her leadership and coordination in partnership with staff.

The Premier’s Be Active Challenge reception provided the opportunity to celebrate the successful engagement of Adelaide High students.
At the time of writing this article, we are still finalising staffing details and I would like to thank all staff who complete their tenure at Adelaide High this year. I wish to thank our Year 12 students and families leaving the Adelaide High community at the end of this year. Thank you so much to our families who have supported and guided the Year 12 students, whilst working in partnership with us over the years. To our 2019 Year 12 students, there is an invisible tie that will bind you together for the rest of your life. That tie is that you are an Adelaide High School student and now a 2019 Adelaide High Old Scholar, and nothing will ever change that. I wish you all the very best. After comfortably defeating Mount Gambier HS in the semi-final, Adelaide High successfully retained the Callum Ferguson Shield with a well-rounded team performance across the competition. Our Year 9 group has some great depth and we are looking forward to seeing them continue to develop. Well done.

PREMIER’S BE ACTIVE CHALLENGE RECEPTION
Congratulations to the 399 Middle School students (196 Year 8s and 203 Year 9s) who participated in the Premier’s be active Challenge this year and who helped make Adelaide High School one of the Top 50 schools in the Challenge - and the only secondary school in the Top 50!
Thank you to the Middle School Leaders who assisted at the PbaC Reception in Week 6 and who helped mentor the AHS students during the Premier’s be active Challenge and the Turn Your Health Around program.
3 RESPECT ME DAY FUNDRAISER PROUDLY SUPPORTS ZAHRA FOUNDATION AUSTRALIA
On Friday, November 22, the AHS community came together to say ‘NO’ to men’s violence against women and children. This year, the ‘Respect Me’ fundraising event supported the Zahra Foundation Australia. The aim of the fundraiser was to raise awareness among AHS staff, students and their families of the importance of showing each other respect and understanding to generate a safer and fairer place for all members of our community.
This event proudly supported the Zahra Foundation which provides support services and advocacy to enable women and their children experiencing domestic and family violence to claim their right to live free from
violence within respectful relationships and in safe communities.
A series of activities were organised at AHS during the week for both students and staff. The whole school community sent out a powerful message that there is no place for men’s violence against women, no place for any forms of abuse. During Pastoral Care sessions leading up to the fundraiser on the Friday, students had the opportunity to discuss the issue, to make women’s safety a man’s issue too. We need to encourage a culture of respect and equality for all: we also need to empower women and girls ‘not only for school but for life’.

ROWING – PORT ADELAIDE REGATTA The Adelaide High School Rowing season is well under way, with crews contesting their 3rd regatta for the season, hosted by the Port Adelaide Rowing Club, on Saturday, November 23. It was successful day for AHS Rowing, winning 7 races from the 15 crews nominated over the course of the regatta.

SAPOL CLASS MURALS The Year 10 SAPOL leadership class were asked by the Department of Transport to design and paint murals on the topic of Reconciliation. The students designed and painted the murals with the assistance of local artist John Whitney during last term and the murals were

then placed on the train corridor opposite the new Hospital alongside our previous murals from 2017 and 2018. The official ‘unveiling’ of the SAPOL class murals took place in Week 5. Congratulations to the students involved on their wonderful murals on the theme of reconciliation.
5 ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE COMPETITION Congratulations to the Year 10, 11 and 12 French students who took part in the competition organised by the Alliance Française last month. The students had the fantastic opportunity to practise their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills during a 45 minute ‘Concours’. All participants received a certificate of participation from the Alliance Française. The top students in each year level were invited, as well as their families, to attend the annual ‘Distribution des Prix’

TALK THE TALK Building our understanding of the significance of oral language in the classroom is a major focus within the English learning area. Creating an environment where teachers ‘vacate the floor’ and encourage students to engage in academic conversations, allows students to become more confident meaning-makers. Research shows that teachers who provide opportunities for students to consider, ask questions, clarify and reflect on their understanding in a structured conversation, improves literacy and the ability to tackle more complex ideas at a high level.
Furthermore, some Year 9 classes created their own board games based on an independent novel they had studied. Part of this process was for students to articulate and share their ideas verbally, allowing
students the chance to talk about their texts in a new, transformed manner. It is so fantastic to see our students sharing their perspectives and building student agency. We look forward to continuing our practise in developing metalanguage and more structured conversations in our classrooms. Sandra Greenan: English/EALD Leader
The English team are working hard to provide more opportunities for students to discuss texts, share ideas and question one another in a supportive and engaging environment. For example, some staff are trialing Socratic Seminars, which is a student-led discussion aimed at improving comprehension and the use of metalanguage (language about language).

YEAR 8 FRENCH EXCURSIONS ‘Petanque, Croissants, Crepes….Some memorable experiences!! A term full of fun activities where the Year 8s were first of all invited to take part in a ‘Pétanque class’. Pétanque is a popular French sport and cultural experience for people of all ages and also quite fun and competitive. Two experienced teachers and current Eastern Suburbs ‘Pétanque’ players brought their equipment to AHS and, after an information session in class and a short demonstration, the students had the opportunity to play the game in teams with hands-on coaching. While playing, their French teacher and the Pétanque coaches moved around to offer guidance and encouragement to all students who thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
One morning, the Year 8s also shared a traditional French breakfast with ‘croissants’ and ‘pains au chocolat’ with their classmates. Later this term, they had the opportunity to develop cultural understanding and oral communication skills in French by reinforcing the vocabulary learnt in the classroom when they visited the French café -creperie in the city. They all enjoyed ‘crepes and galettes’, delicacies from the Brittany region in Northern France, where our sister school is from. This was a worthwhile experience from a linguistic, cultural and social point of view as students had to use French language to order food and interact with French speaking restaurant staff. 2020 VET enrolments
STUDENT PATHWAYS UPDATE
I have secured VET enrolments for current Year 9 – 11 students in these 2020 courses: At Certificate III level: Business, Fitness, Screen and Media (Games Design), Screen and Media (Visual Effects), Sport and Recreation, Information Technology, Animal Studies, Visual Arts (Painting and Drawing) and Food Processing. Successful students will generate SACE Stage 2 credits and be able to use their qualification to help them secure an ATAR. The new Multi-Trade Construction course, partial Certificate III courses, such as Digital Photography and Lighting (from Certificate III Visual Arts (Photo-imaging)) and Plumbing Plus (from Certificate III Roof Plumbing) and only selected Certificate II courses (such as Automotive Servicing Technology) allow students to generate Stage 2 credits. Most Certificate II courses allow students to gain Stage 1 credits. Our students have chosen: • • • • • • • • • • • •

In addition to securing SACE credits, there are lots of other benefits to VET students, as they are able to experience at first-hand what an industry area is like and start to develop the associated skills, in addition to employability skills. As soon as their VET enrolment in the course is confirmed, the students concerned will be able to negotiate to drop a non-compulsory Year 10 or SACE subject, in consultation with parents / carers and their House Manager. This is best done at the start of 2020, once timetables are released.

What to do if your son / daughter has enrolled in a purchased VET course for 2020? •
Look out for a confirmation or acknowledgement letter or email from the RTO delivering the training so that start date and time, uniform and other details are clarified.
•
Unless specified otherwise by the RTO, school uniform is to be worn to each class.
•
Some RTOs ask the students to complete an online literacy and numeracy test and / or to complete more forms as soon as possible after the enrolment takes place.
•
Ask your son / daughter to prepare an electronic folder on their computer in which they can store all relevant information. I also ask students to store hard copies of forms and other information in a folder or binder.
•
In the event of your son / daughter needing to miss a VET class for illness or some other purpose, it is vital that the trainer and I are notified, preferably in advance.
•
Students are required to attend each week, arrive punctually and stay for the duration of the class.
•
For full year courses, due to the practical nature of many of the courses, no more than three absences are permitted during the training program. It is best for students to liaise with their trainer, in the event of known absences or lateness, to see what work can be done in advance or as a catch up later, so they do not fall behind.
•
It is an expectation that VET must take precedence over all other events.
•
Whilst at VET, as per what happens at Adelaide High School, students are to keep mobile phones (on silent or switched off) and airpods in their bags. Students can check their messages during their allocated break times.
•

If Structured Work Placement is a compulsory requirement of the VET course, you can help them investigate or even secure industry placements. Most 2020 VET students would be ready to start completing some of the required hours / shifts in the April school holidays. Those dates are: Week 1: Tuesday 15 to Friday 17 April. (4 days) Week 2: Monday 20 to Friday 24 April (5 days)
There will be other opportunities during the July and October school holidays and during Student Free Days and weekends for undertaking work placement. Students can obtain all relevant documentation from me.
Short courses Short courses have again been popular this year amongst our Year 10 – 12 students They are offered annually, are affordable and can benefit students who are looking for part time work. I promote mainly the following: Barista, Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA: for students who are almost 18 years or who have turned 18 years of age) and First Aid. Depending on the course, should your child be considering doing a VET course, some of this training forms part of that certificate. For example, •
Barista is included in Certificate III Hospitality training
