Pie which has been dubbed “The Day the Music Died” The song was written in 1971 and hit the number-one spot in 1972 for 4 weeks straight. Today it is considered one of the greatest classic rock songs ever written. Mclean first heard about the accident while folding newspapers for his paper route on the morning of the accident. (The line “February made me shiver/with every paper I’d deliver”) The song itself does not mention any of the people who died in the crash but when asked about this the Mclean responded with… ”You will find many interpretations of my lyrics but none of them by me…. Sorry to leave you all on your own like this but long ago I realized that songwriters should make their statements and move on, maintaining a dignified silence.” An interesting note in this whole story is that Waylon Jennings and Tommy Allsup were supposed to be on the plane as well. Jennings gave his seat up to Richardson “Big Bopper” because he was running a fever and Allsup gave his seat up to Richie Valens over the flip of a coin. In keeping with this blog and the meaning of American Pie I think it is important to understand who the 3 legends were. American Pie Video
