CHATROOM by Debra. L. Taylor (Singh) 2011-2012

Chat-room is the result of a project that took place online in a live Chat-room; whereby the artist engaged in dialogue with users and, drew their portraits during each interview. The project enabled the artist to gain private and intimate details of the characters portrayed, which otherwise would not normally be divulged to a complete stranger. Here the lines of intimacy and privacy become blurred between the simulated

world and the world of physicality. The saying, "nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors", comes to mind when one looks at society; ordinary people about their ordinary lives appear to be just that, ordinary and unassuming. Many of those the artist engaged with were just that; daring to express their darker sides in the virtual world, where they feel safe to do so and, where they will not be judged.

He says he feels excited watching me draw him and he starts to play with himself. Although his body is hidden, I can tell what he is doing. A little film of sweat starts to appear across

his forehead, which is highlighted by the light filtering in through a nearby window next to his desk. The webcam connection is suddenly lost, but I have managed to capture his portrait in pencil.

“Do you use the chatrooms for other social interaction other than sex?” (He looks instantly into the webcam, the light reflecting on his lenses.

I have an uncomfortable feeling about him and I’m not sure why). “No, but without the internet, I would resort to magazines or wanking in the bathroom LOL!”

“Hello perfection, would you like to duo an inferior man; who will do anything you say, humiliating or painful so long as it’s not permanently damaging? I can tie up my

balls with elastic bands, hang weights from my balls, drop and swing them, and jam them in a drawer; but, that’s just a few ideas, the limit is your imagination”.

“Does being online increase your social confidence?” “No, but I am able to be more explicit online, cos theres less boundaries.”

After he has answered all of my questions, I ask if I may finish drawing him. Unaware that I’d already made a start, he becomes agitated and cuts our webcam connection.

It is difficult getting him to co-operate. he keeps asking me to show my body. I try and sketch quickly as I think he might disconnect at any moment.

He seems a little nervous. Could this be because he fears descovery from the people in the room next door?

The piece is made up of a series of twenty small, acrylic portraits, all of which were made from original drawings created live, in an on-line chatroom. The project also formed part of the artist’s dissertation, taking some four or five months in the making. The drawings took on average ten minutes each to complete and, are more true to life than their painted counter parts. Here, the paintings have been rendered deliberately in muted palette and tone to simulate the

abstracted view of a society through the screen. To further enhance this, the finished painting has a sheet of glass suspended over the entire work; adding reflection just like the screen of a monitor. The portraits have their individual stories to tell. The artist was party to intimate details, thoughts and desires that would otherwise not be divulge to a stranger in the physical world. Here the artist attempts to convey this with the aid of this accompanying book.
