Freshman Caleb Patty always thought he’d go to Purdue University. Posted on Sep 6, 2012 However, when he by Alyx Arnett realized Purdue didn’t offer the radiography degree he wanted, Indiana University Kokomo became the obvious choice—and one that comes in at $10,000 cheaper per year, he said.

“It’s really easy to get to my classes and get around,” he said. “Plus, the teachers are all friendly because the classes don’t have 200 people in them.” Patty is just one of 3,719 students who made the choice to come to IU Kokomo and helped the campus reach an enrollment number higher than any enrollment number the campus has seen in its 67-year history.

Last week, Chancellor Michael Harris spoke to students, faculty, and staff in Alumni Hall to celebrate the recordbreaking number of students. “We did it, record enrollment of 3,719 students, which is historic,” he said. “It is against all odds. It is against the demographics. It is against the trajectory, and it’s because we believe and work extremely hard with immense belief toward our goals.” More academic programs, increases in financial aid, state-of-the-art facilities, innovative advising structure, a growing campus life, and affordable tuition are all reasons Harris attributes to the growing number of students, as well as hard work from everyone at IU Kokomo.

“I want to be very clear; this isn’t accidental … We were smart. We were very strategic. We were very intentional. We knew what we were doing, and the results are here. And we’ll continue to do it. The reason I know we will continue to do it is because I know what we’re doing is what is needed and what is right,” he said. Enrollment is up 12.1 percent from last year’s 3,318 students, the largest percentage of growth seen among all of IU’s campuses this year. Chancellor Harris noted that the growing number of students is not the result of the campus accepting everyone who applies, either.

“I want to emphasize that everyone says, ‘Well, that’s because you just let everyone in.’ Well, actually, I have news for you. We have denied more (applicants) this year than any year we remember in the past I don’t know how many years,” he said. In addition, the number of full-time students is at 70.2 percent, an increase of 6.4 percent from last year. “We’ve also continued to grow in the number of students who are full-time students, which is another indication that this isn’t someone in New York taking online courses,” he said. Chancellor Harris went on to note the difference in the unemployment rate between those over 25 years old with a four-year degree and those without. Without a high school diploma, the unemployment rate is at 12.7 percent, compared to 8.7 percent for those with a high school diploma, 7.1 percent for those with an associate’s degree, and 4 percent for those with a four-year degree. “We’re making sure that generations to come will be qualified for a meaningful life and a life of prosperity where they’ll be able to provide for themselves,” he said. “So once again I want to congratulate all of us and express immense appreciation because I truly know and truly understand how much hard work this takes. This is a huge move. This is not a blimp on the trajectory. This is huge. This is unprecedented. This is historical.” Next year, Chancellor Harris said the goal is to have an enrollment of 4,100 students. “There’s no doubt about it. Indiana University Kokomo is the place people now look to for innovation, for entrepreneurship, for new ideas, for new thoughts, for what’s happening, for what’s current, for what needs to be done,” he said.
