Exercise 1

A Vocabulary and a Grammar

4

BRANCH Point of Circulatory Division

The study models begin to develop the idea of branching air. Creating channels of air the cubes divide spaces and circulation at sharp points.

5

Beginning to explore more complex ways of dividing spaces, the circulatory channels less become ambiguous. Instead, these models begin to look at the the larger space of the cube and how it can be implied. 6

The final model categorizes the investigation into three main techniques. First, narrow and towering channels circulate air through the model, Second, large objects compete for dominance. Third, sticks imply the larger space of the cube and its boundaries. 7

Ernie Davis Hall’s circulatory system is quite advanced. Through perspectives of the hall we gained a new understanding of how pathways move people throughout the building.

These study models begin to look at how form can coexist with context.

12

Continuing to use branching as a base concept allowed for a deeper investigation into the possibilities of how both the building and the context can brach and create channels.

13

The final model explores the ways in which interior space can branch multi-directionally. Developing ways to branch outwards as well as downwards, the model takes precent from organic masses such as anthills or termite mounds. 14

The model also looks at differentiating spaces by compressing the interior walls. on the lower floor ground takes precedent over the interior space, while on the upper floor it is the opposite. 15

Element House Learning to Learn From Architecture

16

The Element House is a sustainable modular home located in northern New Mexico. The house, designed by MOS Architects, utilizes multiple environmantally sustainable techniques to make the home have a net zero energy consumption. The space itself is formatted on a trangular grid pattern in a way that separates private and public spaces from eachother.

Exercise 4 Design as Synthesis

Andy Goldsworthy is a Scottish natural sculptor, who uses exclusively organic materials to build his pieces of art

Preliminary study models begin to investigate the diffusion of light as well as the overlap of layers to create form
