2016: IN REVIEW MICHAEL HOLDEN

INTRODUCTION Hello and welcome to my 2016 motorsport photography portfolio. This year, I have seen my career go from strength to strength, with my work now being published in leading classic and performance car magazine Octane on a regular basis, along with having the opportunity to develop my technical and creative skills both within an academic environment and in my personal time. Having graduated from the University of Chester with a First class honours in Graphic Design and Photography in November 2016, I am now ready to devote more time to this profession, with the intention of now building a successful long-term career as a motorsport photographer. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy viewing my work. I will see you at a racetrack in 2017!

MOTORSPORT PROJECTS

FAST LAP For my final Graphic Design degree show exhibition at the University of Chester, I aimed to combine my Graphic Design and Photography skills with my passion of motorsport. My project was centred around club motorsport as I felt this discipline barely got a mention in the media (unless sadly there has been a serious injury or death). From this, I devised a range of fanzines that solely promote club motorsport, entitled Fast Lap. My aim with the designs of these publications was to strip away the glossy features one normally sees in magazines and instead offer a raw, unvarnished alternative. In order to achieve this, I printed all these spreads on a risograph printer, as I felt the textures were able to replicate the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;feelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of club motorsport. Alongside this, I also prepared physical items and A1 posters (original images printed on a risograph printer) in order to show my concept can work in numerous settings. (All photographs and articles in the fanzines were completed by myself)

GREASE, SWEAT AND TEARS For my final Photography degree show exhibition at the University of Chester, I undertook a project that would display a visual narrative of what occurs ‘behind-the-scenes’ of a typical club motorsport event, entitled Grease, Sweat and Tears. The project was influenced by my passion and determination to pursue a long-term career as a motorsport photographer, whilst emphasising my ardour for club motorsport. Having attended a number of these events in my younger years (and to this present day), I have found these ‘grass roots’ events to be more enjoyable to watch live and to interact with. This series of photographs also evidence that it does not matter what category of motorsport one watches, the passion, adrenaline and determination these families and friends share is universal across all disciplines, and is a true testament to grass roots motorsport.
