1. LA VILLE ET CHASTEAU DE NICE £650 Scarce first available view of Nice and the Castle published by Belleforest. In 1575 Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia was translated into French and published in Paris by François de Belle-Forest. However there were only a few maps of France in the pre 1580 edition of Munster and Belleforest added more French maps. Nice was one of those. Very rare as there was only one edition of Belleforests Comographia. 3. NICAEA CIVITAS

Superb copperplate view of Nice from "Theatrum Sabaudiae" by Johannes Blaeu. From Blaeu's 1682 or 1721 publication of Italian cities. The Duke of Savoy invited Johannes Blaeu and sons to create a work of the cities etc in Savoy; known as a 'Town Book'. Very decorative with two devices of cherubs holding the coat of arms of Nice. Banner title. Legend below with twenty-eight references to places in Nice. The quality of work is exceptional and now it is almost impossible to find original prints from this book. The lithograph has been trimmed and laid down probably in nineteenth century. Light foxing not obtrusive.Would frame perfectly. 20. DEPT DES ALPES MARITIMES Very attractive Levasseur map of Alpes Maritimes. Rare in so much as it was the only edition of the Atlas to include Alpes Maritimes after the creation of Italy and the consequently the Deapartment of Alpes Maritimes. 23. RUINES DU MONUMENT DE LA TURBIE PRES DE MONACO Rare large eighteenth century engraving of La Turbie The Trophy of Augustus Near Monaco. The Tropaeum Alpium (Latin for "Victory Monument of the Alps", French: Trophée des Alpes), was built by the Romans for the emperor Augustus to celebrate his definitive victory over the ancient tribes who populated the Alps. 24. TORRE DELLA CITTA DI TORBIA NELLA CONTEA DI NIZZA Attractive small copper engraving by Salmon of La Turbie. Original antique print of the Tropaeum Alpium, a Roman trophy (tropaeum) celebrating the emperor Augustus's decisive victory over the tribes who populated the Alps. The monument's ruins are in La Turbie (France), a few kilometers from the Principality of Monaco. This print originates from 'Lo stato presente di tutti i paesi e popoli del mondo naturale (..)' by Thomas Salmon. 26. MONACO COAST OF GENOA Rare attractive and large lithograph of Monaco by J.D.Harding (17971863) member of Society of Water Colour Painters. Superb tinted lithograph..Good size Litho. Harding's 'Sketches at Home and Abroad' was a milestone in the development of colour printing. For the first time more than one lithographic stone was used, allowing different tones to be printed. Harding drew his own sketches onto the stones, which were then printed by Charles Hullmandel, the leading lithographic printer. The print run was limited to 1000 copies. Attractive view of the popular French Riviera resort and town of Villefranche-sur-Mer by Albanis Beaumont (1753-1810). Printed by T. Bensley, and published for William Faden in London. Beaumont was born in Piedmont, but naturalised in England. This print is from a scarce book of Travels through The Maritime Alps from Italy to Lyons, across the Col de Tende by way of Nice, Provence. This is a superb quality aquatint ..rare in the the 1790's. Mint condition only other example I can find is a cleaned version at £1,000.. 35. PLAN DE VILLE ET PORT D'ANTIBES Highly detailed, engraved port plan of Antibes, France on the French Riviera or Cote d'Azur, based on information that was current as of 1720. Highlighted by a colored compass rose oriented with north to bottom right, this old antique chart / plan shows Antibes surrounded by Vauban-style defensive walls. Key noted features include "le Chateau", land and sea entrances (ports), le mole or jetty, the Fort d'Antibes and a beach leading to Nice - "Plage qui conduit a Nice." Numerous soundings, underwater hazards, and anchorages are noted in and near Antibes harbor. 38. LE PORT D'ANTIBES EN PROVENCE Superb and now quitre rare large elephant folio engraving by Cochin from Vernet. From the Series Ports De France.Claude-Joseph Vernet's greatest commission was a series of pictures of the ports of France (Paris, Musee de la Marine). Galleons in the harbour, Fort Carre .The Fortified town of Antibes with the Cap Behind. Figures in foreground. This is a fine example of the quality of French Eighteenth century engraving. Antibes is one of the rarer and most sought after. Uncoloured as issued. Very good condition. Highly recommended. 39. HARBOUR OF ANTIBES A very rare sepia aquatint of Antibes. Superb view of the popular French Riviera harbour of Antibes by Albanis De Beaumont (1753-1810). Printed by T. Bensley, and published for William Faden in London. Beaumont was born in Piedmont, but naturalised in England. This print is from a scarce book of Travels through The Maritime Alps from Italy to Lyons, across the Col de Tende by way of Nice, Provence. This is a superb quality aquatint ..rare in the the 1790’s. Mint condition Beaumont was born in Piedmont, but naturalised in England. Between the years 1787 and 1806 he published a great number of views in the south of France, in the Alps, and in Italy. This print is from a scarce book of Travels through The Maritime Alps from Italy to Lyons, across the Col de Tende by way of Nice, Provence, Languedoc etc. Prints of this calibre and of this region are uncommon and desirable. 40. ANTIBES Rare plan of the port of Antibes. By William Heather (1764-1812) was and engraver and chart publisher in London. After working at first for the teacher in navigation and publisher John Hamilton Moore Heather set up in business on his own in 1793. He first specialized in publishing charts of British waters. English text ...'Dangerous rocks etc'. Depths and anchorages. Only detail is J.S. is John Stephenson the engraver. Original / early colour Slight pleasant toning Very good condition for this rare little map. Heather specialized in supplying charts to the merchant trade, operating from the Navigation Warehouse at 157 Leadenhall Street, at 'The Sign of the Little Midshipman', a ship's figurehead suspended outside. The premises were immortalized by Charles Dicken's 1846 novel 'Dombey and Son' as the shop kept by Sol Gils: the 'Little Midshipman' was illustrated in the book. 43. DESCRIPTION DES ISLES DE STE MARGRITE & ST HONORAT Full title: Description Des Isles de Ste. Margrite et St. Honorat et des Forts et Redouttes que les Espagnols y ont faintz et la Reprise de partie desditz Forts et Redouttes par l'Armee Navalle de sa Majeste Commandee par Monsieur le Comte de Harcour . . . 1637 Tavernier’s very rare large map of the Bay of Cannes with the Isles Lerins of St Marguerite and Sy Honorat. The map shows the battle of the Isles de Lerins, during the Franco-Spanish War (Thirty Years War), fought between March 24 and May 13, 1637. The battle resulted in the Spanish surrender of the two islands of Sainte Marguerite and Saint Honorat to the French. Map has been professionally cleaned and has later hand colour . Very good condition Melchior Tavernier was a member of a large family involved in the publishing trade in Paris in the early years of the seventeenth century. Early in his career, he apparently collaborated with Henricus Hondius, as at least one of his early maps references Tavernier as the seller of a map engraved in Amsterdam, by Hondius. 44. PLAN DE LA BAYE DU GOURIEN ET DES ISLES ST MARGUERITE A manuscript map based on the Ayrouard map of the same name. The Ayrouard map came from 'Recueil de Plusiers Plans des Ports et Rades et de Quelque Cartes Particulieres de la Mer Mediterranee. 1762'. Cannes marked a Cane. Much detail and a good quality manuscript map probably executed around 1800. A couple of stains but overall good condition for this unique map. 46. CANNES VUE PRISE DE LA PLAGE PRES DU CASINO The very rare Cannes lithograph from supplement to Nice et Savoie ..Alpes Maritimes. This is the most sought after of the 2 Cannes plates Depicts where the Croisette is now and Le Souquet in the background. Nice et savoie was a highly succesful plate book from the 1850's and after the creation of the Alpes Maritimes in 1860 a supplement was printed in 1864 and a few of the towns in the newly created department were included. These include Antibes & Cannes. Very few were actually printed and consequently these lithographs are rare. Duotone lithograph in mint condition. 48. MARSEILLE Beautiful birds eye plan of the oldest city in France, probably derived from Sebastian Munster's similar plan. The harbor is defended by three large forts, with a floating gate guarding the harbor entrance. The city is dominated by the 12th century cathedral and a cartouche at top contains the key to the major buildings. Levantine trading ships are shown in the surrounding sea and harbor, and people are shown seine fishing from an offshore island. Uncoloured as originally issued. Interestingly this map came from Theatre Geographique de la France Contenant les Cartes et Description Particulieres des Provinces d'iceluy Royaume. A Paris, Chez Melchior Tavernier, Graveur & Imprimeur du Roy pou les Cartes Geographiques, 1643. Tavernier used or bought the french regional maps from Blaeu/Janzoon or reprinted the plates. An attractive and detailed map of the French region of Provence. Sailing ships and decorative compass roses adorn the waters of the Mediterranean, whilst the French royal arms appear boldly near the title cartouche. Finely engraved and with attractive original colour, this map exemplifies the Blaeu style. The family's publishing endeavours ensured their maps were, and still are, renowned for the consummate care and attention apparent in every stage of production - using only the best paper.
