I am currently enrolled at the University of Idaho, where I plan on receiving my Masters of Architecture in the Spring of 2013. I received my Bachelors of Science in Architecture, with a minor in Art from the University of Idaho in 2011. I finished my undergraduate studies with an overall GPA of 3.45. During my time at the University of Idaho, I have learned a tremendous amount about art, design and architecture. I hope to further my education through an internship that will allow me to continue to grow as a designer and future architect.

My design for the Boise fire station was based around two main concepts, first of which was efficiency. Firefighters need to be as efficient as possible with their time; therefore it is key that the building they work in allows for a swift exit. They need to be prepared at a moment’s notice; dressed and in the truck in under one minute. My design incorporated a straight circulation path that would help allow a firefighter to get to where

5

they need to go without getting stuck in a cluster of endless turning hallways. The second concept that helped guide my design was the community. Firefighters and the people they serve should be intertwined together. Fire stations should be looked at as beacons for citizens. They should allow for community orientated programs such as lectures and training exercises that better inform people on fire safety.

The Piazza dei Ponziani project, located in Rome, Italy was a design for a summer studio in Rome. For this project, I decided to take the Piazza, which was used for parking, and create a space that could transform into an open air market. When the market is closed, the stands simply break down and turn into benches. I designed the Piazza to be covered with an operable sail system that allows the users to determine what type of environment they want to have.

The Moscow Swim Center was a project from my third year at the University of Idaho. The project was located in Moscow, on the Moscow Pullman Highway directly north of the Student Rec Center. The design incorporated an elevated walkway so that students could easily cross the buys road below that fed directly into the swim center. The building was broken up into four different sections which can be seen from the street level through the roof heights. The tallest section of the building housed the high rive

11

platform while the lowest roof housed the children’s play area. Each roof height represented something different occurring in the space below it.

The Cambie corridor is now the hotspot for a future of Transit Oriented Developments (TODs) because of the insertion of light rail stations into the suburban communities immediately surrounding the Downtown Peninsula. Assuming these developments take hold within the densification projections for the next ten years, these stations will become hubs for residential, social, and commercial interaction resulting in nodes of density. If we are to claim a sustainable focus for the future of Vancouver, congestion of program should be the new development, not sprawl. For this to take place the current zoning ordinances for the city must be revised into congested and diversified land use zoning. This congestion of program lies in diversity in the existing neighborhood infrastructure. This includes diversified programs, building type, cultural community, residential demographics and green to urban space ratio, resulting in the increased proximity of necessary services within a radius of diverse transportation options.

The St. Croix Marine Research Center, located on the island of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands, was a lab building dedicated to studying coral reefs around the island. The site was located o the grid, so the structure needed to be designed as a net zero building. In order to accomplish this, my design took full advantage of solar, wind and rain water collection. Building orientation, along with the use of a double facade helped cut down on the reliance of a mechanical system to cool the building.

This project, located outside of Lewiston ID, consisted of a cabin design for a future development project on the Snake River. The design was geared towards wealthy outdoors people that were looking for a home away from home, where they could come fish and take part in other outdoor activities. Connecting the inhabitants of the cabin to he landscape and site, while minimizing the disturbance to the natural environment was key to the design project.

The City of Ketchum is very interesting. The town is famous for its “world class” resort, Sun Valley. Because of this, property values are astronomically high. Due to the high housing cost, the average home buyer in the area is around 70 years old. People that work in the town are forced to live in outlying areas and commute in each day. Not only is this unsustainable, but it is extremely taxing on people who commute to town every day for work.

29

This project was designed to cater to the local, low wage worker in the area. The project consisted of small shops and a restaurant on the ground level, and affordable housing above. Re-densifying and bringing both youth and lower income people back into the area was the main focus of the project. The intent was to create a public space where people of all income levels could interact with one another on the same level.

Farming Phoenix was my graduate thesis project at the University of Idaho. The project was located in downtown Phoenix on Washington and 2nd. The goal of the project was to create a research facility that could invent and test new technology in the field of urban agriculture, while at the same time produce food for people living in the city. In total, the building could produce food for over 5,000 people living in the area. The design also included a covered plaza surrounded by shops, restaurants and a market where produce could be sold. The idea behind the plaza area was to attract people to the site so that they could see the relation between their food supply and the building producing it. The goal was to get people to pay attention to where their food came from. Instead of eating food from hundreds, and sometimes thousands of miles away, the distance traveled from production to consumption would be measured in footsteps. Energy creation and usage was another key design issue. Seeing that the program would use a substantial amount of energy, it was important that the building could produce its own energy. With the addition of a on site digester, food waste from around the city, roughly 80 tons per day, would be collected and brought to the site. From this energy producing system alone, the building could oset all of its grow lights and still have energy left over.
