Brazil's President promises major reforms In an effort to tackle protests that have been sweeping the country for several days, President Dilma Rousseff has proposed a referendum on political reforms and has also promised to boost spending on public transport and focus on health and education as part of what she called "five pacts" with the people.
Ms Rousseff met leaders of one protest faction before meeting with state governors and mayors. She told a televised news conference: "My government is
listening to democratic voices. We must learn to hear the voices of the street. We all must, without exception, understand these signals with humility and accuracy.
"Brazil is ready to move forward and has made it clear it does not want to stand where it is."
Rousseff's five Ms "pacts" with the people covered political reform, fiscal responsibility and extra spending on health, transport and education. She proposed holding a referendum to establish a
Constituent Assembly that would eventually amend Brazil's constitution, and said her government would allocate 50 billion reais (ÂŁ16 billion) for new investments in urban mobility projects and to improve public transport.
The president also stressed the need for fiscal responsibility from governors and mayors, suggested tougher penalties for corruption, and warned against any repeat of the violence that was seen last Thursday. Regional mayors and

It was a busy weekend all round so it’s quite good for once to be back at work.
Friday saw three different events. The first was a Pimm’s afternoon over the road at Speed Finance which was very well attended, then there was the Garden Party at Dog and Cat world in aid of their Gift Of Life cat rescue with music and dancing with a fabulous buffet. Also on Friday The Jersey Boys strutted their stuff to a packed audience at The Olive Tree in Coin who thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Phew... and that was just Friday! Saturday was the Animals In Distress mid-summer dinner and dance with Frankie B doing the honours entertainment-wise. He was ably accompanied by Ricky Leach in his snazzy new jacket of purple crushed velvet with black brocade trim for the lapels and pockets! And on Sunday we had a very nice lunch down at Almanacer just 100 metres or so from the seafront at Torremolinos. I have to admit that I had “eyes bigger than belly” syndrome

On Monday evening, there were fresh demonstrations in several cities, although they appeared to be smaller than those that led to clashes with police last week. Two women were killed at a protest in the central state of Goias, not far from Brasilia. Police said they were killed by a driver who sped through a roadblock they had set up with other protesters. The deaths brings to four the total number of lives lost in the unrest.

€2 billion to boost Downsizing jobs for young people Employment Minister Fátima Báñez announced on Monday that Spain is to receive €1.5 to €2 billion from the EU to help combat youth unemployment. She said the total amount that the EU is planning to spend on the problem, assuming that the European Council approves the this week, is expected to reach €6 billion. Báñez made the announcement after meeting on Monday with the prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, and the leaders of Spain’s main labour unions in the Moncloa palace. Unemployment in Spain currently stands at around 27 per cent of the active population, but affects 57 per cent of people under 25. This has led to an exodus of young professionals who have
little chance of finding a job at home. After Monday’s meeting, the main union representatives said they doubted that the European Summit, to be held in Brussels on June 27th and 28th, would address priority issues for workers and citizens within the EU. After the 90-minute meeting, CCOO union leader Ignacio Fernández Toxo, who is also the president of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), warned that social issues “were not going to be given any room” at the meeting, despite the fact that their inclusion was one of the commitments agreed upon at the last European Summit, held in December of last year. The general secretary of the UGT union, Cándido Méndez,
was slightly more positive, saying the Spanish government has “been able to switch from a position whereby it is being swept along, to a position of resistance,” given that “It understands that a lack of decisions is creating additional problems.” The unions are also calling for the establishment of a “social salary” in Europe, in line with the minimum wage, as well as dialogue on social issues at an EUwide level.

Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría told her regular weekly press conference on Friday that the government expects to save around €37.7 billion over the next three years under its restructuring of public administrations, which includes the mergers and elimination of 57 public bodies and organisations. She said the figure is a “conservative estimate”, amounting to about four per cent of GDP. Under the plan approved by the Cabinet there will be no layoffs, the deputy prime

minister said. Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro, who accompanied Sáenz de Santamaría at the press conference, said: “These reforms are not being taken to reduce the public payroll but instead to make government more efficient.” “A painful adjustment had already been made, which unfortunately added to the unemployment problem,” Montoro said, referring to the loss of 375,000 public jobs across the country since the PP came to power in 2011, and began implementing acrossthe-board cuts.

Princess Cristina did Eight jihadist suspects arrested not commit tax fraud
The Guardia Civil and the National Police arrested eight terror suspects – believed to have links to the Al Qaeda terror network – in the early hours of Friday morning in Príncipe Alfonso the neighbourhood in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta. They are also suspected of having recruited jihadists from Ceuta and Morocco to fight in countries such as Syria and of funding, indoctrinating and facilitating travel for would-be fighters. Police said the network was based in Ceuta and the Moroccan city of Fnideq.
Interior Ministry Jorge Fernandez Diaz called the operation a "hard blow" against international terrorism. All the detainees are Spanish citizens. In a statement, the interior ministry said dozens of people, some of them under 18, had left both Ceuta and Moroccan territory under the cover
of the al-Qaeda-linked network. Some of them had taken part in suicide attacks, while others had joined training camps to prepare for armed action, the ministry said. Several groups of jihadists were still expecting to travel from Spain to Syria, the ministry statement said, and the investigation was still ongoing. The National Police and the Guardia Civil began separate investigations in 2009 and 2011 but began working together earlier this year. Details about those arrested were not immediately available.
The presence of foreign combatants among those fighting the government of Bashar al-Assad is causing anxiety in Western countries, as well as in Syria itself. In April, EU counterterrorism co-ordinator Gilles de Kerchove said an estimated 500 Europeans were fighting with rebel forces in Syria. Since the Syrian conflict began in March 2011, at least 93,000 people have been killed, the UN said on June 13th. Among the foreigners who have been killed in Syria were two Britons and an American woman.

Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro told Parliament last week it was an administrative error that attributed the sale of 13 properties worth €1.4 million to Princess Cristina in 2005 and 2006. He said the properties in question were never registered to the king’s daughter, who is embroiled in an investigation into her husband's alleged misappropriation of public funds and moneylaundering.
Montoro said the princess’s national identity card number had been erroneously inscribed on the registry forms. He said he could not give a full explanation until he had the results of an investigation which was already under way. He said: "It is most unfortunate and in the first instance I apologise to the Royal Household.”
In response to questions as to how the Princess's distinctive ID number – consisting of two digits and letter when a normal ID number consists of eight digits and a letter – came to be used, Montoro said: “Technically I don’t know how it happened. I do not see any cloak and dagger here; these are purely administrative
errors. To say these errors do not occur is to be detached from reality.” He added that measures had been adopted to ensure “this never happens again”.
The Socialists said the minister should “take responsibility for an absurd situation worthy of a banana republic,” noting that the matter was hardly good for the credibility of Spain. The minister replied that the tax agency AEAT handles “millions and millions of data and is one of the best and most efficient in the world”.
The princess’s lawyer, Miquel Roca, said she would not file a lawsuit against the tax agency. “If there are mistakes there are mistakes,” he said. “Mistakes get corrected, and that’s all
there is to it.”
It is not the first case of mistaken identity on the part of the authorities involving a royal: on April 24th Princess Elena was nearly fined by the Civil Guard for driving a tractor without insurance.
The two officers stopped the vehicle in Valladolid province and discovered the driver, a man, had no insurance. When filling in the form, one of the officers wrote 12 – the eldest princess’s ID number – in the corresponding box but did not fill in the rest of the driver's number.
The mistake was corrected and the princess did not receive the fine, which could have ranged from €601 to €3,005.
Flood-hit towns face long return to normality
Catalonia's internal affairs Ramon commissioner, Espalader, warned last week that the residents of Vall d'Aran, a picturesque valley in the Catalan Pyrenees that sustained heavy damage from flooding faced a "long and hard return to normality".
However, he stressed that, "The main thing is that there were no victims to mourn; that is the most important part of this emergency." A state of emergency was declared after heavy rains and thawing mountain snow brought heavy flooding to the area. Last week the local authorities brought in heavy machinery and
workers, aided by dozens of volunteers, started with the cleanup work along the Garona, where there was a lot of accumulated mud and severe structural damage to public and private property. Espalader said, "Repair work will require significant financial resources and time."
The top priority was given to getting communications and drinking water back to the 3,500 residents of the valley's capital, Vielha, and 1,000 other people in the municipalities of Betrem, Bossòst, Arties and Salardú. Besides Vall d'Aran, the nearby
districts of Pallars Sobirá and Alta Ribagorça were also affected by the rise of the Noguera Pallaresa river.
Military helicopters transported some of the 12 generators that restored electricity to the area. Tanker trucks delivered water to places such as Vielha hospital until pipes, deposits and water treatment plants could be repaired.
Located in the province of Lleida, Vall d'Aran and the surrounding area is a favourite destination for fans of outdoor sports, particularly climbing and skiing.

Messi to pay up if found guilty of tax fraud
In response to tax fraud allegations against Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi last week, his lawyers said that the 26-year-old "scrupulously complies with Spanish legislation" and "has paid what he is legally obliged to". They attributed the player's situation to a "difference of opinion" with the AEAT tax agency.
Messi and his father, Jorge Horacio Messi, are accused of defrauding the
tax authorities of more than €4m between 2007 and 2009 and are suspected of using companies abroad – in Belize and Uruguay – to sell the rights to use Messi's image. They both deny the allegations. They have been summoned to appear at a Barcelona court on September 17th.
Their lawyers said in the statement that they "firmly" believe in the innocence of their clients,
but also announced that Messi will pay "the amounts that are finally decided" if he is found guilty.
Messi's net salary from Barcelona is said to be about €16m a year, making him one of the world's most highly-paid sportspeople. He has also signed multi-million-dollar endorsements with commercial sponsors around the world. The income related to
his image rights included contracts with Banco Sabadell, Danone, Adidas, Pepsi-Cola, Proctor and Gamble and the Kuwait Food Company.
Under Spanish law, tax evasion of sums over €600,000 is punishable by up to six years in jail and a fine of up to six times the amount defrauded. However, legal experts think it extremely unlikely Messi will be given a custodial sentence if found guilty.
84 arrested in crackdown on doping
The Interior Ministry revealed on Sunday that police have arrested 84 people and dismantled two criminal gangs accused of importing and distributing sports doping substances in raids that were carried out in 10 regions. Half the arrests were made in Madrid,
Barcelona and Valencia. The ministry said in a statement that about 707,000 doses of anabolic steroids, blood boosters and growth hormones were seized. The substances were distributed through sports centres and private homes. One of the gangs imported the illegal substances from Portugal,
and the other from Greece and China. The names of those arrested were not revealed. The issue of doping has become more prominent in recent months because of Madrid’s bid to host the 2020 Olympics. The city is competing with Istanbul and Tokyo, with the host city expected to be chosen
in September. The government recently approved a law aimed at countering a doping problem that has tarnished the reputation of various sports. The new law expands the range of doping tests and imposes larger fines for those dealing in illegal substances.

Newborn rescued from drain
Police have arrested a 26-year-old woman on suspicion of attempted murder, after her newborn baby was rescued from inside a building's drains. The two-day old baby boy weighing 2.1kg was found after a neighbour had heard what he thought was a meowing cat trapped in the drains and decided to alert firefighters at about 2 am on Sunday. The firefighters found the baby boy – who still had his umbilical cord attached – wrapped in plastic bags in the manhole in the building's courtyard. it is believed that the child was trapped in the pipe for 40 hours. Police said the woman had confessed she had tried to get rid of the baby, but did not have enough money for an abortion.

Worst weekend in box-office history
Just over 300,000 people spent €2,150,857 to go to the cinema last Saturday and Sunday, compared with the previous minimum of 500,000 recorded on the weekend of april 20th and 21st, when box office takings amounted to €3.8 million. The president of the film producers association (FaPaE), Pedro Pérez said he recognized the impact of the 13-point hike in the VaT rate, from eight to 21 per cent, but said the industry had to fight back with "aggressive pricing policies". rentrak España, which has been measuring theatre box office takings since 1997, said the figures reflect the fact that last Saturday and Sunday was the first weekend of the year with warm weather, and that there was no big commercial title to draw people in.

World News Nelson Mandela 'still critical' Former South African President Nelson Mandela remains in a critical condition in hospital, President Jacob Zuma said on Monday, adding that the doctors were doing everything they could to make the former leader comfortable, but he could not give any more medical details.
On Sunday, the presidency announced that Mr Mandela had become critically ill, after Mr Zuma visited him in
hospital. Mac Maharaj, Mr Zuma's spokesman, said after the visit that it is a stressful time for the Mandela family. "I think there is need to be sombre about the news. There is a need not to hold out false hopes but at the same time let's keep him in our thoughts and let's will him more strength," he said. South Africa's first black president, 94, was taken to hospital in Pretoria earlier this month for the third time this year, with a lung infection.
There has been little information about his condition in recent days. On June 13th Mr Zuma said Mr Mandela's health continued to improve but that his condition remained serious. Mr Mandela is revered for leading the fight
against white minority rule in South Africa and then preaching reconciliation despite being imprisoned for 27 years. After five years in power, Mr Mandela retired from public life in 2004 and has rarely been seen at official events since.
Mass cremations Seven years for for flood victims Berlusconi
Rescuers continued their attempts to reach thousands still stranded by flooding and landslides in northern India, as firewood, fuel and priests have been flown to the town of Kedarnath to perform mass cremations.
A senior police official in the state capital, Dehradun, said that mass funerals would to take place in the Hindu temple in Kedarnath, which was worst hit by the floods. Police said lots of bodies are piled up around the temple and have begun decomposing. Many of them remain unidentified
so they are being photographed and DNA samples are being taken and preserved for the families of those still missing.
The cremations are expected to carry on until Saturday, police said. Uttarakhand State Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna said at the weekend that he feared at least 1,000 people had died. Officials said 97,000 people have been rescued so far. Early monsoon rains in India this year are believed to be the heaviest in 80 years
Italy's former PM Silvio Berlusconi has been sentenced to seven years in jail and banned from public office for paying for sex with Ms El Mahroug, known as "Ruby the Heart Stealer", in 2010, when she was 17.
However, he remains a free man while he appeals against the Milan court ruling. Mr Berlusconi is already embroiled in several other court cases. In October 2012 he was given a four-year sentence for tax fraud, which is also under appeal. This latest verdict ends a two-year trial which has
frequently made the headlines, with its allegations of topless women and erotic party games. Ms El Mahroug was one of a group of women invited to Mr Berlusconi's private residence for so-called "bunga-bunga" party evenings.
Mr Berlusconi insists the alleged sex parties were actually dinners where female guests performed "burlesque" dancing. The prosecution said the women were part of a prostitution system set up for his personal sexual satisfaction.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has apologised to neighbouring Malaysia and Singapore for the thick haze caused by fires in Sumatra. The haze is being blamed on illegal slash-andburn fires used to clear land for palm oil production. He said firefighters were working hard to extinguish the blazes. Malaysia declared a state of emergency in two southern districts on Sunday as air pollution levels reached a 16-year high, leaving two towns in virtual shutdown. in Singapore, the Pollutant Standards index (PSi) hit a record high of 401 on Friday – a level where prolonged exposure is considered potentially "life-threatening" for old and vulnerable people. Anger at Russia and China
The US has criticised Russia and China after fugitive edward Snowden left Hong Kong for Moscow. US Secretary of State John Kerry has said it would be "disappointing" if Russia and China had helped him evade an attempt to extradite him. The US has revoked Mr Snowden's passport. He is thought to have spent Sunday night in an airside hotel at Moscow airport. On Monday, a seat was booked in his name on a flight to Cuba, but he was not seen on board when it took off. He was still believed to be in Russia on Tuesday. The 30-year-old iT expert, who has applied for asylum in ecuador, faces charges in the US with theft of government property, unauthorised communication of national defence information and wilful communication of classified communications intelligence. Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed on Tuesday that Snowden was still at Moscow airport. SOUTH KOReA
Cyber attack on Korea websites
The government has issued a cyber alert after an apparent hacking attack on government websites. The website of the presidential office was one of several official and media sites hit by an apparently co-ordinated attack on Tuesday morning. aged just four at the time, was unharmed as she was hiding under her mother’s skirt in the back seat and remained unseen. She was found eight hours later, still hiding, by French police attending the scene of the crime. The two girls have been staying with foster parents since the shootings and are said to be recovering well according to a family friend who also expressed surprise at the arrest of “a quiet and very private man”. Surrey Police set up a Joint Investigation Team to work with their French colleagues – with up to 100 officers working on the case. Following the arrest, Annecy prosecutor Eric Maillaud told AFP: "We felt there were enough reasons to take him into custody. We need to ask him questions about his
schedule, his relationship with his brother and the family inheritance." In May, Surrey Police issued an appeal for help to trace a vehicle, thought to be UK-registered, which was seen near the crime scene. Detectives said the 4x4 was being driven on the Combre d'Ire Road in Chevaline, near Annecy, about 20 minutes before the shooting. Zaid al Hilli was among the mourners at the funerals held for his murdered relatives in 2012.

According to research carried out by former Tory donor Lord Ashcroft, the second most recognised person in the UK Government is not the Chancellor but Mayor Boris Johnson who came second in the poll just pipped to the first spot by David Cameron who won by just 3 points at 94%. Mr Miliband was the third
most well-known politician on the list at 77%, but was often confused with his brother David and was also identified as Bert from Sesame Street.
Defence Secretary Philip Hammond was the least recognisable politician from the group shown to voters, with just one in 10 able to name him correctly. Some believed he was WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who has been camping out at the Ecuadorian Embassy as he tries to avoid extradition!

Back off banks
Bank of England Governor Mervyn King, making probably his final public comments before retiring, accused British banks of lobbying senior politicians to undermine a new system of financial regulation. He said on Tuesday some banks had contacted the offices of Prime Minister David Cameron and Chancellor George Osborne to protest against looming regulatory decisions. The Bank gained powers to supervise banks on April 1st, and last week it ordered them to raise 13 billion pounds of extra capital and meet a new cap on lending ahead of international pressures to curb risk in the financial sector. King also criticised banks for complaining to the media about regulatory decisions during negotiations.

Ian Brady addresses his Oldfield must leave UK mental health tribunal Ian Brady appeared in public yesterday (Tuesday) for the first time since 1966, speaking at his mental health trial, trying to get himself released from the high security Ashworth Hospital where he has been held since 1985, back into the general prison population so that he may starve himself to death. However, it was revealed on Monday that, despite being fed through a tube while on hunger strike, he in fact makes himself toast every day.
The 75-year-old Moors murderer compared the crimes he committed with fellow murderer Myra Hindley in the 60s with the acts of soldiers and politicians saying that a “criminal” would have “given value to the person he is about to kill”. When asked what value he got from the killings he had carried out he referred to his torture and murder of children as "recreational killings" from which he derived an "existential experience". He is arguing his case on the grounds that he does not consider himself to be mentally ill and is not psychotic. He alleged that when he first went to jail he copied symptoms of other prisoners who were
being held on the prison’s psychiatric wing to get himself transferred. He referred to Constantin Stanislavski who created a set of techniques in the 20th Century, called method acting, which was used to create realistic performances. It was used by actors including Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro, saying: "It's attempting to portray the heart and soul of the character you are trying to portray."
Brady described his life behind bars, how he enjoys "eclectic, freewheeling conversation", how he studied German and psychology and how he walks up and down in his cell reciting Shakespeare and Plato. Brady said he had "more freedom" in prison – he spent time in Durham, Parkhurst and Wormwood Scrubs. He remembered mixing with the Kray twins, the Great Train Robbers and various terrorists. Brady made reference to his notoriety as a prisoner, saying the public and media are obsessed with the Moors murders case. He said: "Why are they still talking about Jack the Ripper, after a century? It fascinates them so, the dramatic background, the fog,
cobbled streets. The Moors is the same thing... Wuthering Heights, Hound Of The Baskervilles."
Trenton Oldfield, who stopped last year’s Boat Race, has been ordered to leave Britain after his licence to remain in Britain was revoked.
He also said at the tribunal “Who doesn't talk to themselves?”, when it was pointed out that he had been heard on several occasions muttering to himself.
His legal team says he has a severe narcissistic personality disorder but is not mentally ill and could be treated in prison rather than hospital. But Ashworth says Brady is still chronically mentally ill and remains a paranoid schizophrenic who needs around-the-clock care.
The last time Brady spoke so publicly was in court in Chester when he was convicted 47 years ago and jailed for life for three murders in the 1960s.
The hearing is being relayed to the press and public on TV screens at Manchester Civil Justice Centre and the judgment of the panel will be released at a later date yet to be fixed. Brady was given life for the murders of John Kilbride, 12, Lesley Ann Downey, 10, and 17-yearold Edward Evans.

Mother sentenced to Removals & minimum 18 years 25-year-old Rebecca Shuttleworth has been sentenced to a minimum of 18 years in jail after she was found guilty of murdering her own twoyear-old son Keanu.
She was also found guilty of four counts of child cruelty after Birmingham Crown Court had been told that Keanu had been found to have a fractured skull among 37 other injuries including a fist sized tear in his stomach that had caused “massive bleeding”.
Family and friends told the court that Keanu was often seen wandering around with a soiled nappy for long periods of
time and he was generally a neglected child. The judge, Mr Justice Spencer, told her: "He was a defenceless child and it was your duty to protect him. Instead you beat him so severely he died a lingering death from his injuries a day or so later."
The detective who led the inquiry, Chief Inspector Caroline Marsh said: "Rebecca Shuttleworth is clearly somebody who isn't a normal member of our society. In the past, I've described her as a monster and perhaps I would stand by that, because I can't understand how someone could do that to a twoyear-old boy."

EC slams plan to Malaga-Madrid AVE the most used expropriate properties Government figures show that the Malaga-Madrid AVE high speed train is the most profitable in the country, ahead of the Madrid – Zaragoza – Barcelona AVE, as least as far as the number of passengers per kilometre is concerned.
Last year, the AVE trains running between Madrid and Malaga had a
63.8 per cent occupancy, just ahead of the Madrid– Zaragoza–Barcelona (63.4 per cent) and Barcelona– Sevilla (61.5 percent).
The least used AVE is the one between Madrid and Albacete, with a 25.8 per cent occupancy. Renfe is trying to improve occupancy rates with special reductions that can amount to as much as 70 per cent if tickets are

This has increased the occupancy rate by 11 per cent on the Madrid– Malaga route since the discounts were introduced in February. More than ten million people have used the Malaga-Madrid AVE since the service was introduced on December 24th, 2007.

The European Commission has said that the Junta de Andalucia's plan to temporarily expropriate homes from banks to prevent evictions of low-income families could have a negative impact on bank stability and economic recovery.
In April, the region’s coalition government of Socialists and the United Left (communists and green groups) passed a
decree establishing that homes in the process of foreclosure can be taken away from banks for up to three years, if the homeowners meet certain conditions. So far, there have been seven such expropriations. However, in a letter to the Economy Ministry, the EC warned that this type of initiative could increase doubts about the real estate market, push up
Spain’s borrowing costs and reduce investor interest in the property market.
The EC wrote that there could be “a drop in the value of real estate assets,” which would have an immediate impact on the banks’ balance sheets which in turn would prevent credit from flowing to businesses and individuals.
Manilva mayor resigns from party Manilva mayor Antonia Muñoz and six councillors who belonged to the United Left have resigned from the party since charges of corruption and nepotism appeared in the newspapers last week.
Apparently the party's executive had been asking them to resign for some
time. However, they have not resigned their places on the council.
The resignations came after a meeting between the Manilva contingent and United Left officials at the party's headquarters in Malaga, during which Muñoz was asked to resign as mayor but she
declined to do so because she said she was innocent.
She said she understood that the party had asked for her resignation as a member but would not leave her post unless told to do so by a judge, in the event of being found guilty of the accusations made against her.

As the trial of Jose Breton, who is accused of killing his two children, entered its second week, media attention did not flag.
If anything, the trial seems to have become a national obsession, with morning TV magazinestyle shows following it live and the so-called pink gossip shows devoting huge chunks of their time trying to analyse the man at the heart of the case. Bretón is an enigma. He sits quietly between two policemen at one end of the judges' bench, but it is his eyes which dominate – intensely staring from judge to witness or seemingly lost in his own thoughts. But what fascinates most is how removed he appears to be, how distant, something the police and witnesses highlighted this week.
One policeman told the judge that for a man who had just lost his two children –- six-year-old Ruth and two-year-old Jose – Bretón was remarkably calm, something that all the other witnesses in the Cordoba park on October 8th, 2011, also couldn't help noticing. "Everybody else was wandering around looking anxiously for the children but he just sat on a bench, as if it had nothing to do with him," one witness said. "He didn't act like a man who had just lost his two kids." The only time Bretón showed any nervousness, one policeman said, was
when they took him to the finca where his children's bones were eventually found – burned in a makeshift oven.
Meanwhile, his statements were not convincing. Asked why he bought so much petrol in the days before his children's disappearance when he was travelling back and forth between Cordoba and Huelva, where the children lived with their mother, he said he wanted to stock up because petrol was so much cheaper in Huelva. When he said the children ran away from him, the judge pointed out that a two-year-old child could not outrun an adult. But one of the most harrowing witnesses was the children's maternal grandmother, who had accompanied them to Cordoba for their weekend visit with their father. Clutching a photo for her two grandchildren, she broke down and cried disconsolately as she told the judge: "It was the last time I was ever going to see them". Their mother Ruth was more composed as she contradicted her husband's testimony that he adored and spoiled his kids. She said: “Bretón was never affectionate toward the kids. He frequently rebuffed little

Sharp drop in motorcyclist deaths
From 2005 to 2012, the number of motorcyclists killed on the roads dropped by 80 per cent, even though the number of motorbikes on the roads increased by 40 per cent.
Malaga provincial government spokesman Jorge Hernandez Mollar said that in 2006 19 motorcyclists died in accidents and there were 85,000 motorbikes on the roads. in 2012, four motorcyclists died, even though the number of motorbikes had risen to 123,000. He said this was proof that the Traffic authority's road safety campaigns aimed specifically at motorcyclists were successful.

What a palaver!
B
oy, did the tax people get egg all over their faces last week. It started with the tax office accusing Princess Cristina of not paying taxes on 13 fincas in four different parts of the country which she had allegedly sold for around €1.4 million. She denied ever having owned the fincas, even though her ID number was on the deeds. And this is where the mystery begins.
T
he royal family don't have the same IDs as other Spaniards. It all goes back to General Franco who decided to introduce IDs back in 1944. However, he didn't get round to doing anything about it until 1951, when he assigned himself the number one, his wife, Carmen Polo, the number two, and his daughter Carmen the number three. These numbers are preceded by seven noughts – the ID number for Spaniards has eight digits followed by a letter. We foreigners have an ID number starting with X, followed by seven numbers and ending with a letter.
A
lthough Franco had not named Juan Carlos as his heir in those days, he knew he was going to bring back the monarchy sooner or later so he assigned the Royal family the numbers from 10 to 99. So King Juan Carlos is number 10, Queen Sofia 11, the Infanta Elena 12, being superstitious they jumped the number 13, so the Infanta Cristina's number is 14, ending with Z.
W
hat everyone asking themselves now is how could four notaries in four different parts of the country not recognise the Princess's very distinctive ID number when the deeds to these properties were drawn up!
F
inance Minister Cristobal Montoro has said the matter is being investigated and it will be interesting to see what explanation they come up with. The whole problem started when the judge who is investigating Princess Cristina's husband on tax fraud and money laundering charges asked for the couple's tax returns. I've felt for some time that Judge Jose Castro seems
determined to embroil the princess as deeply as possible in her husband's alleged wrong doings. In fact, I would go as far as asking him which political party he voted for – judges are very politicised in this country and it wouldn't surprise me if he belonged to the monarchy-hating United Left. But how could four notaries get it so wrong? Perhaps one day we'll find out.
W
hile researching DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad), I came across some other interesting facts. In the beginning, there was a strong element of control – the DNI was only obligatory for people who were on probation after getting out of jail. At that time – 1951 – most of them were probably political prisoners, that is, people who had fought on the Republican side in the civil war. Men who changed their address for business or work reasons also had to have an ID card. Franco didn't like people wandering at will around the country.
L
ater, as the ID cards spread to the rest of the population, four categories developed in accordance with the holder's economic circumstances. Well-to-do people (primera – first class) paid 25 pesetas for the card, second-class citizens paid ten and third-class citizens paid five. The very poor and unemployed paid nothing. These four categories existed until 1980, when the single category was introduced. The DNI card costs Spaniards – even the poorest ones – €10.40 today.
I
t has been issued in many colours over the years – pink, green, blue and even multicolour. At one time it gave the holder's blood group, profession and marital status. The national identity document is unique and not transferred to anyone else after its original holder dies. Some low numbers are still issued, but only because blocks of them were not assigned to anyone in the past.
I
www.thenewsonline.es
t's not the first time the authorities have been careless with ID numbers. Franco's daughter Carmen was wrongly assigned a property and more recently, Princess Cristina's sister Elena was nearly fined for driving a tractor without a licence. After nabbing the male driver, the Guardia Civil who was filling in the form wrote 12 in the pertinent box then forgot to fill in the rest of the numbers. The mistake was discovered in time. So why were the 13 mistakes with Princess Cristina's ID number not discovered in time?

P
rime Minister Mariano Rajoy was heavily armed with political clout when he arrived for the European Summit in Brussels this week, but it was far from certain whether he would be able to convince leaders to initiate a growth plan to stimulate the economy and create jobs for young people. The continent’s leaders said the main reason they called the twoday summit was to discuss introducing stimulus packages, but few actually believe there will be concrete measures or any major changes to the current austerity drive policy coming out this meeting.
S
trict-minded Germany has heard what the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said a few weeks back that austerity isn’t what it is all cracked up to be if there are no stimulus measures. It is listening, but of course the Berlin government doesn’t like what it hears, especially on the eve of federal elections with Angela Merkel’s conservatives slipping in the polls over domestic scandals. The Germans would rather want to continue to pull the purse strings even tighter on Spain, Greece and Portugal.
W
hile Spain has been given high marks for implementing reforms, including changes to the labour laws and financial restructuring, the ongoing high unemployment threatens to unravel all the work that the Rajoy government has accomplished. This nation can no longer support the persistent painful jobless situation. Without work there is no money for consumption and financing for all types of businesses is tight and limited.
S
ocialist leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba was the first to make an offer to Rajoy to form a pact to strengthen the prime minister’s position at the summit. It is mostly for show, however. The key idea is to demonstrate to other European leaders that the two major parties have set aside their bickering and come together to demand policy measures and tangible solutions for Spain’s economic woes. Other opposition groups, including the PNV, CiU and UPyD, announced that they would not vote against the agreement in Parliament.
H
ow much this pact will actually shed new influence on Brussels is anybody’s guess. But the assumption that European leaders will push forward remedies because of a Socialist-PP document is unrealistic. Spain’s
two major parties have inflicted a lot of wounds on each other and those injuries will need a lot of time to heal. Rubalcaba stressed that the pact would in no way influence the Socialists’ position against the government’s labour and education reforms or insistent demands for explanations about the ongoing alleged corruption scandals inside the PP. “I can be in disagreement with Mr Rajoy but what is at play here is the future of all Spaniards,” the Socialist leader said on Tuesday.
E
urope isn’t so much concerned about the backroom deals brokered in Madrid between the two political forces. Leaders want more assurances that Spain and other troubled nations will honour their commitments in preserving financial stability while at the same time keeping their reforms in gear. But job growth is a major concern. With 27 per cent unemployment – 56 per cent among young people – Spain needs help in creating jobs. Labour Minister Fátima Báñez on Monday announced that the EU intends to give up to €2 billion to Spain to help fight youth unemployment.
H
ow that money will be used is still not clear, but government officials say that funds could go to creating job training programmes and helping companies pay salaries for young people they intend to hire. But again, we go back to square one. Business owners are still edgy about the current economic climate, and investor confidence in Spain, as well as in the rest of Europe, is remarkably down. They may not be so keen to open their doors to new workers, despite government incentives, at a time when consumption is low.
T
he only way to break this vicious circle is for Europe to do a complete turnaround, with the wealthier, more stable, countries helping and advising their fragile neighbours. Gone should be the days when the rich nations of the north tell the weak periphery – it is not our problem. It is their problem because they form part of Europe, and Europe is now definitely stuck at a crossroad with no direction in sight.

Problems paying your mortgage? Don’t despair - We have some solutions
Due to the complicated economic situation that we are going through, it is increasingly common to see individuals and families faced with difficulties in meeting their mortgage payments. If you find yourself in this situation, don’t bury your head in the sand. Unfortunately, by stopping the monthly payments you are worsening the problem rather that ending it. Banks can, and do take action from the very first missed payment. They can claim the unpaid amounts and eventually they ask the courts to take legal action by starting the process to auction the property in order to recuperate the debt and instigate eviction.
The problem nowadays is that even if the property is auctioned it may fail to achieve a price high enough to cover the debt, and will therefore leave you with an outstanding amount that you are still liable for. So despite the
fact that you have lost your home, you may still have a debt to pay to the bank for the outstanding balance. To avoid this we propose the following solutions:
1. Check first if the mortgage has a payment protection insurance for payments or unemployment, which would cover unpaid monthly instalments for up to 12 months 2. Don’t wait until the last minute. As soon as you realise that you will have to default payments we recommend that you talk to your bank to initiate a series of negotiations to improve the conditions that you had with them. Don’t forget the bank will
always prefer to receive some payment rather than being obliged to keep the property.
3. Take an active part in the matter. Firstly notify the bank that you are willing to pay but wish to negotiate a lower instalment. This could be possible by negotiating the terms of your mortgage, by refinancing and extending the time period for the mortgage. This may mean that the mortgage will cost you more in the long run, but it will be infinitely cheaper than having a debt which accrues interest from the very first day, and becomes impossible to keep up with. 4. Cancelling all of the debt by handing over the property to the bank.

Emily got the job but Amy backed out at the last minute thinking something didn’t quite add up and went back to their digs at Oxford University where the pair had been studying. Emily is a feisty young lady and is the daughter of Toronto Politician, Donald Mortlake, who seems more interested in keeping the situation out of the press while he challenges for his party leadership than he is about the safety of his daughter, so Petra is called back from her holidays to investigate the case. Petra decides that the only way to find out what has happened is to join the crew of the yacht herself, despite misgivings from her mentor Tom Gilmore who sees the only way he can help her is to give her some advice on how to get herself
out of certain situations should they arise as he realises he is not going to be able to dissuade her from the path she has chosen. She joins the ship, Titania, in Monte Carlo as it sails between there, Puerto Banus and the north of Morocco. There is obviously something going on and Petra is fascinated by the yacht’s owner Don Léon, but there’s the lovely Monica’s strange and jealous behavior and the dowdy and manly Olga to contend with but absolutely no sign of Emily. Is she still alive and, if so, can Petra and her cohorts find her in time? Time is fast running out, so how will it end? You’ll have to read the book to find out! An enjoyable, fast-paced mystery with a bit of murder, mayhem and sex thrown in for good measure and not at all what one would have expected from the rather demure looking Ms. Leigh! About the author. Marion Leigh was born in Birmingham and after receiving her M.A. in
Modern Languages from Oxford University, she worked for a year as a volunteer teaching English in Indonesia for a year, after which she moved to Canada where she had a successful career as a financial and legal translator. She now lives on the Costa del Sol. She and her husband spend the summer in north America cruising aboard their 20metre powerboat. To date they have covered over 15,000 nautical miles exploring the Great Lakes and the Eastern Seaboard of the United States and Canada. She says: “Only since I moved to Spain have I had the time and mental space to begin work on a series of adventure thrillers featuring Canadian Marine Unit Sergeant Petra Minx. The Politician’s Daughter is Marion’s first Petra Minx novel. ISBN number 978 0 9562760 3 2. Published by Rudling House.
Remember, that legally it’s not mandatory for the bank to accept the property in lieu of the total debt, (“Dación en Pago”), but it’s not illegal to reach an agreement, so it’s well worth trying to propose this option, as you have little to lose.
5. Go to consumer associations such as PAH who help people who are having problems with their mortgage by providing information, holding public meetings and rallies. They also take legal action and have managed to avoid foreclosure for some people. 6. Extension of time Remember once an auction has taken place and you are awaiting eviction, you can request
an extension on the time you are given in which to vacate the property, depending upon your circumstances.
7. Note that if the mortgaged property is linked to a business or professional activity, eviction cannot be carried out if the holder is insolvent.
8. Payment of the debt before foreclosure begins. It can take up to six months, from the first payment default, for eviction proceedings to begin. Therefore, if you can manage to pay off the debt, plus interests and costs, before this process starts it would still be possible to put a halt to the proceedings and avoid the seizure of your property.
9. Contact a legal councilor or a lawyer. Local man reaches new heights - and then some! When local La Cala man Paul Shafto takes on a challenge, he doesn’t do it by halves!
This time he undertook a week-long trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro joining 15 intrepid explorers attempting to reach the summit of Africa's highest mountain. He joined Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling, and former footballers Colin Cooper and Craig Hignett in this massive effort to raise money for the Finlay Cooper Fund. (Paul and the team are pictured below.)
The fund was set up by former Middlesbrough, Millwall and Nottingham Forest defender Cooper and his wife Julie in loving memory of their son, Finlay, who sadly died in a tragic choking accident shortly before his second birthday, 11 years ago. Here’s
what
Paul
(pictured right at the top of the mountain with his copy of The News – sensible boy!) had to say about his fabulous trip:
“A truly amazing week with some great new friends! We were so lucky to have just had to deal with the cold as we got higher, I don't know how harder it would have been if we would have had rain to deal with as well. The thought of every morning and night with wet clothes etc…, thankfully, the sun shone every day. “Every morning we got up 5:30am for breakfast at 6am. Then we would warm up and carry on each day, some days tougher than others. Sunday and Monday were gradually rising and 8 to 10 days trekking. We arrived at camp with the tents and mess tents ready assembled by the remarkable raffiki's (locals) who would carry all our gear for camp:

Tents, tables and chairs, pots and pans and food, and they would walk each day to local rivers to collect water – the job they do is amazing!
“On Wednesday we walked 10 hours. Passing Barranco Wall which was an incredible sight using hands to help pull us over each part of the tough two hours constant climbing over rocks. We arrived at camp for tea and a wash. That night I was in my sleeping bag at 7 pm (very unusual!). We were woken at 11:30am for tea and some food, then we had walk through the night to the summit for sunrise at 7am. “I can honestly say that after all my training here in Spain and the week with the lads, as soon as I pushed for the last little bit of the summit climb – “I did it! – We are there”!! The emotions started hitting home on the amazing effort that we had all done and I couldn't stop the tears even though there were 15 lads at the top. Colin then placed at the top of the summit a heart shaped stone that he had engraved

Finlay (the little boy who lost his life and the name of the charity we were all trekking to raise funds for) into it! So, of course, there were even more tears!
“We stayed at the top for around hour or so then we started our walk back down. We had a four hour walk down to camp for lunch, then a cheeky hour’s sleep before we carried on from 2 pm until 6 pm and to dinner and camp for the night. Obviously, we were all still high on the achievement that we had done! We had dinner before heading to bed as we still had more descending from the mountain to do on Friday. “Next morning some of us could feel the heat in our feet and legs, but we had breakfast and started again on our next day. A gruelling seven hours of constant downhill trekking followed, some over rocks and three feet drops, but a lot of manicured paths formed out of wood and mud. The only way to explain it is that it is like walking down steps two feet long and about the same distance in height as from your elbow to your hand. This hit hard as it’s seven hours and just downhill! As we walked down through the woods, in the trees above us there were wild monkeys swinging from tree to tree.
Incredible to look up and see! As we approached the lower level we could see the buses and people congregating at the bottom then something worth waiting for… Tony bought me a beer!... Kilimanjaro beer … Went down so well! This week has been one of the toughest challenges of my life but at the same time an incredible achievement that we as a group had achieved. If you ever get the chance to do this my advice would be: Do it! I can guarantee you will love every minute but you won't want to do it again!
Chic
All our achievement is to raise as much as possible for such a wonderful cause so, if you can find it in your hearts to donate if you haven’t already done so www.finlaycooperfund.co. uk. RELEASE MONEY FROM YOUR UK PENSION QROPS (Qualifying Recognized Overseas Pension Scheme) have been available to ex-pats since April 2006.
There is no mystery to QROPS, they are basically the same as your UK pension but offer better benefits than the UK. The process is very simple and takes approximately three months to complete. In the UK you may not take any benefits before you are 55 years of age. If you are 50 or above and have been outside the UK for 5 complete tax years you may withdraw 25/30% and then an income at 55. If you are pension rich but cash poor, this could be a way of solving temporary financial difficulties. You have nothing to lose by asking but everything to gain. We look forward to hearing from you To find if you qualify to release money now call 951 206 138 or email admin@kennedyfinancialservices.com or visit www.kennedyfinancialservices.com and complete the free assessment form.

Ain’t nothin' but the Mijas Blues Once again the Mijas International Blues Festival is here. The annual event will be from Friday the 5th of July to Sunday 7th and, as usual, in the large plaza in front of the town hall in Mijas village. July 2013 sees the return of some familiar faces, some of whom have played at the Mijas Blues Festival since it started seven years ago. From the UK Jerimiah Marques and the Blue Aces have played at all but two of the festivals, and at number one for attendance, is West Weston with the Bluesonics, who have performed authentic Chicago and West-Coast blues at every Mijas festival since 2007. Opening the show is our own Mama Paula and her
Blues Band. The festival brims with talent. West Weston is rated as one of the top harmonica players in Europe, and 2013 sees the premier performance of the Mississippi / New Orleans rough, rural and talented blues-man, Little Freddie King (pictured Right). Although performed in its many and varied forms, all the music is strictly blues. Starting at 7.30 pm through to 1.30 am on

There are no tickets or entrance charges and the whole event is organised by the Mijas town hall Foreign Residents Department and Kevin Hillier owner of the “Aint nothin' but” blues club in London. Kevin's love of the blues and gentle but persistent cajoling of the town hall eventually led to the annual Mijas Blues Festival. Now one of the most popular of all the Mijas events, it draws a healthy crowd. In addition to the live music and good company, food and drinks will be available from the stands in the square. Almanecer of an evening and the warm and balmy atmosphere makes it a fantastically romantic evening out. Laurent, originally from France, spent two years on Mustique followed by another 18 years on St Maarten (that is part Dutch, part French run) in the Carribean before moving to Spain with his family. He serves good quality Spanish cuisine along with a few French favourites. The menu del dia is just €9 with very good choices for each course. I had the paella, which I have to say
was one of the best I’ve ever tasted, followed by spinach crêpe with a homemade cheesy béchamel sauce – delicious! My companion chose from the main menu starting with the battered aubergine chips with cane honey which she said were utterly delicious, followed by calamari a la plancha. We also shared a crisp, fresh, house salad. Desert was a fabulous home-made crème brulée, one of our favourites – that was very good indeed to finish a lovely San Juan lunch within sight of the beach in a typical Spanish sea side
restaurant. The menu is extensive with many different fish and meat – dishes enough to spend 20 minutes deciding over a lovely cold glass of tinto verano what to choose. Service as I said is good and attentive in a laid-back Spanish way – no pressure only pleasure when you want it and at your own pace. This restaurant is
thoroughly recommended. See their ad on page 18 for more info. and to book your table. by Geoff Heading

Despi c abl e Me 2 Directed by Chris Renaud & Pierre Coffi Voices of: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Russell Brand When Despicable Me was released back in 2010, unleashing villainous Gru (Carell) and his little yellow Minions on youngsters and their mums and dads it became a global hit for Universal Studios, grossed more than $540 million and was the 10th biggest animated motion picture in US history.
Since then the concept has been turned into a mega-successful ride at Universal’s Florida theme park so another outing for Gru and the Minions was always on the cards. In the first movie criminal mastermind Gru followed the path to redemption and now he is a changed character. He has adopted three
charming little girls and embraced fatherhood with warm enthusiasm. But his skills as a villain mean that he finds himself called on by agent Lucy Wilde (Wiig) from the Anti-Villain League to help thwart a new dastardly villain in the shape of El Macho (Benjamin Bratt – this should have been voiced by Al Pacino who reportedly walked citing artistic differences, but Bratt is on great form). Gru finds himself falling for Lucy as he and the Minions aid her in the battle to bring down this new foe.
So, a movie with a great new villain, a sweet love story, the Minions on top singing form, full of breezy wit and smart animation
with excellent voice-overs – it’s the family friendly summer blockbuster destined to make the box office tills ring.
It’s received a universal thumbs-up from critics in
Europe and the UK. And so confident are Universal of the appeal of the chirpy Minions that there is a spin-off movie for them in the pipeline too so there’s plenty of life left in this franchise.

Soon they discover that the Blood Moon will approach in three days and the powerful dark witch Muriel is the responsible for the abduction of children. She intends to
H
ave you noticed that as soon as a sequel or a remake is about to hit the silver screen, the original appears on TV? It’s something I’ve always found rather amusing, and don’t worry it’s not just Sky TV that does it, Spanish TV does it too! So, it’s no surprise that “Superman II” was on TV the other night – I do mean the original, starring good old Christopher Reeve, with his big shoulders and relatively little head.
I
’ve seen “Superman” more times than I care to remember, though I have to say the time I enjoyed it the most was when I was in Bryant Park in New York a few years ago. It was the last movie of the summer to be played and over 2,000 people came to watch it. That said, he has never been one of my favourite superheroes. To be honest, I am not really into superheroes, but if I had to pick, I’d have to go for Wolverine from X-Men. There are various things about Superman that I just don’t get, like why did he think that wearing red Yfronts on his suit was cool? And who in their right mind has belt on their Y-fronts, let alone a yellow one?
P
use the children together with a secret ingredient in a Sabbath to make the coven of witches protected against the fire. Meanwhile Hansel and Gretel discover secrets about their parents.
ersonally, I don’t know what Lois Lane saw in him. It’s not exactly hard to tell them apart – Clark Kent parts his hair on the left and Superman on the right (except he uses gel), and they both have appalling dress sense. And Clark is such a goofy character. Anyway, I digress. I could pick and poke at him all day, but let’s poke the film a bit instead.
W
hen I was watching “Superman II” over the weekend, I couldn’t help but laugh at the dreadfully embarrassing special effects and lame dialogue. I know that at the time it was “out of this world”, but really, it’s pretty bad. For example, the Daily Globe is supposedly set in New York (as there are many flying scenes around lower Manhattan), but when Superman begins fighting Zorg and his gang, the sets are all over the place. There are bits that look like Time Square and right next to it a “fake” bridge reminiscent of Grand Central and then the radio tower falls off the Empire State. Did anyone think to look at a map and say, “Dude, that is just ridiculous”? Not to mention all the silly extras tumbling up and down the street and running towards the danger – twits!
T
erence Stamp’s acting it rather questionable too. I love it how the Americans always choose Brits to be the baddies. I think the English accent is far more effective when being malevolent (especially Alan Rickman), however Stamp’s voice is a little too high pitched to pull it off, he almost sounds like Kermit on helium!
T
he fact of the matter is “Superman” is a classic, even with all its cheesiness, not the best film ever made, but it’s mighty entertaining and it made my summer in New York. So, if you fancy a giggle, dig it out and bring out the popcorn.

Even though you would rather float through the next few days the universe is making sure that you are totally grounded. Any idealism of others will fall away and their ‘true’ self will be revealed. A new adventure is commencing and it is important to see it for what it is as it is likely that new influences are going to take you on different path. It will feel important to acquire as many items for your next phase as possible. You could be asked to put your heart on the line and say what you really feel. So many of us make things harder than they need be through over thinking and yet there are also some things in life that are difficult. The one thing is sure that there is something very powerful and empowering to earn that victory after an intense challenge. You may find that after you make a serious decision something this week is about to become a lot easier. Listen to what others say but try to avoid becoming trapped in heavy discussions with others, you need some lightness in your life. This is a very social week for you when it is time to go out and have some fun. It is vital right now that you concentrate on your hopes and dreams and do not allow anything to break your faith. Rise above negativity and the harshness of the world and keep on track. Personal finances are highlighted and it is important that you are making use of the gifts and talents you already have. Major opportunities can appear right now as Jupiter is shining its light upon you. A relationship exchange will make you feel more at ease and reassured about the future, someone you love will start to lighten your load. If you invest your time and attention to overcome a hurdle that stands in the way of your wishes then you will be rewarded for your dedicated efforts. This is the time to play by the rules and if you do things are likely to work out in your favour – if you indulge in secrets you could be found out. Any choices and decisions you make you need to make sure have reality attached to them, times have changed and situations are not as they were. The thing is you cannot win if you are not in the game so as long as you remain in play you will have a chance of getting what you want. As long as you expect the unexpected you will be able to make sure that everything moves along smoothly. This is a great week for relaxing and figuring things out.
In the past it probably felt as though you were held back while others seemed to thrive but all this begins to change. Perhaps you now realise that you are in the right place at the right time. Many that may have avoided you in the past may now seek you out and need your help. Although there may be moments of confrontation it is important that you remain true to yourself and September 23rd - stand your ground. This is a great time for exchanging ideas with others. If you need to get an important message across then this is the week to get it down on paper as your communication and writing skills are exceptional. You may have to do what needs to be done rather than what you want to do, as in putting the interests of others before your own. Take each thing as it happens without assigning too much meaning into it, as all of a sudden one thing is likely to lead to another and all that you dreamed would never happen, could come true.
This week everything has a way of flowing, it all just falls into place, with little effort on your part, particularly in the areas of home and family. You have an amazing ability to be able to connect with others and have a direct influence upon their lives and future. There is more going on behind the scenes and slowly secrets will start to filter through to you that may take you out of your comfort zone initially, however, there is much wisdom to be found in this process. Others cannot necessarily see your true nature upon first meeting, you tend to keep a lid on your feelings with a guarded exterior and yet when you do let someone in they are amazed at how gentle and empathic you really are. This week there is an opportunity for you to show someone your inner nature, to reveal more of the self you have been protecting, one thing is for sure they will be back for more and will take you a few steps closer towards your dream.
Timing is everything right now so you will be required to be patient and remember that anything worth anything is worth waiting for. What appears to be one thing on the surface is likely to be the opposite underneath so do not be fooled by appearances, some people are masters of disguise. Be persistent in your approach and keep your mind on where you eventually wish to be, perhaps it is time to release certain conflicts with another so that you can have some peace in your life. All you need is some tender loving care and that dose of extra comfort will go a long way in giving you the confidence you need to take a courageous step. Soon you will find yourself taking responsibility for something that you have set in motion and you will begin to make the finishing touches. If you are single there is the possibility of a new relationship being formed and if in a partnership already then marriage could be on the cards.

This quick and easy recipe for chewy, sticky florentines is absolutely foolproof. Whip up a batch for a summer party or, alternatively, they make great gifts.
1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. 2. Heat the butter, sugar and flour in a pan over a medium heat, stirring continuously, until the butter has melted and the sugar has dissolved. 3. Gradually add the creme fraiche, stirring continuously until well combined. 4. Add the almonds, candied peel, stem ginger, and sour cherries and mix well until combined. 5. Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper and place teaspoonfuls of the florentine mixture onto
it. Space the teaspoonfuls out at 2.5cm/1in intervals so they don't merge together when heated. 6. Transfer the florentines to the oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden-brown. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool on the tray, then transfer the florentines to a cooling rack. 7. Bring a little water to a simmer in a pan. Suspend a heatproof bowl over the water (do not allow the base of the bowl to touch the water). Add the chocolate pieces and stir until smooth and melted. 8. Turn the florentines so that the flat base is facing upwards. Spread the melted chocolate over the florentine bases and set aside to cool and set.

LESSON
August 23rd September 22nd
This is a time for inward reflection this week Aries where you take time out to contemplate and muse on the latest flurry of activity. Pay close attention to the details and take your time, doing things right the first time round is what matters at the moment. Your creativity levels are sky high and you will be able to put your high imagination skills to practical use. As you access your creative bowl, an air of playfulness surrounds you, and attracts others.
...you don’t have to be a chef!
We have looked at the difference between the same word which ends in o or a in a previous article. For example Libro - book and Libra - pound (as in pound sterling or a pound weight) . It is so important to differentiate between the final vowels to make sure you understand what is being said, or perhaps even more importantly, you must be very aware to be sure of what you are saying.
This week I thought we'd look at some words which are easily confused if you don't pay attention to that final vowel
Un manzano is an apple tree while una manzana is an apple. Similarily, un naranjo is an orange tree and una naranja - an orange Un almendro - an almond tree. Una almendra - an almond Un cerezo - a cherry tree. Una cereza - a cherry Un ciruelo - a plum tree Una ciruela - a plum.
Sometimes there is a difference in size or use apparent in the final vowel
Un barco and una barca are both boats but un barco is bigger. Un gorro and una gorra are both types of hat. Un gorro is the woolly hat you wear in winter and una gorra the peaked variety to keep the sun off your face. Sometimes the masculine denotes the person and the feminine the subject with which they work
El músico is a musician while la música is the music El matemático is a mathematician while las matematicas are maths. Poco a poco - little by little we learn to notice the difference. Fluency can't be far away.

Out-of-body scenarios 'help social anxiety' People suffering from social anxiety may be able to overcome their fears by viewing themselves taking part in virtual scenarios, according to researchers at the University of East Anglia.
New imaging technology allowed six participants to rehearse their behaviour in a range of social settings. UEA researchers created more than 100 different virtual scenarios, such as using public transport, buying a drink at a bar, socialising at a party, shopping, and talking to a stranger in an art gallery. They then asked six young men recovering from psychosis who also have debilitating social anxiety to take part in the video scenes which they were able to see on a real-time video screen. The researchers said: "People with social anxiety are afraid that they will draw attention to themselves and be negatively judged by others in social situations. "Many will either avoid public places and social gatherings altogether, or use safety behaviours to cope, such as not making eye contact.
Lords
"Paradoxically, this sort of behaviour draws attention to people with social anxiety and feeds into their beliefs that they don't fit in.
"We wanted to see whether practising social situations in a virtual environment could help." The virtual environments encouraged participants to practise small talk, maintain eye contact and resist safety behaviour such as looking at the floor or being hypervigilant.
When used as part of a course of therapy, researchers found that these virtual environments helped participants notice their anxious behaviour and change it. They could also rehearse their behaviour over and over again. As a result, the researchers found that participants were able to take greater social risks. One participant said that his confidence about going to the pub and socialising with people "in real life" increased from 30% at the beginning of the first behavioural experiment to 50% at the end of the last experiment.

Violence against women worldwide is 'epidemic' More than one in three women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual violence, according to a report on partner and non-partner violence against women by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC). Its authors say it is the first systematic study of global data, detailing the impact of the abuse on both the physical and mental health of women and girls. The key findings are:
l Violence by an intimate partner is the most common type of abuse, affecting 30% of women across the globe. l 38% of all women murdered were killed by their partners.
l 42% of women physically or sexually abused by partners had injuries as a result.
l Victims of nonpartner attacks were 2.6 times more likely to experience depression and anxiety compared with women who had not experienced violence.
l Those abused by their partners were almost twice as likely to have similar problems.
l Victims were more likely to have alcohol problems, abortions and acquire sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.
WHO head Margaret Chan said violence against women was "a global health problem of epidemic proportions". "This new data shows that violence against women is extremely common," said report co-author Professor Charlotte Watts from the LSHTM. "We urgently need to invest in prevention to address the underlying causes of this global women's health problem."
The document adds that "fear of stigma"
prevents many women from reporting sexual violence. It stresses that health officials around the world need to take the issue "more seriously", providing better training for health workers in recognising when women may be at risk of violence and ensuring an appropriate response. The WHO says it will start implementing new guidelines together with other organisations at the end of June. The prevalence of violence against women is highest in the low income
countries in South East Asia (Bangladesh, East Timor, India, Burma, Sri Lanka, Thailand) (37.7 per cent), followed by Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan and the Palestinian territories (37 per cent). It is lowest in the high income countries – Australia, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, and the US – at 23.2 per cent.
Step forward in cure for migraine
A major study into the causes of migraine could offer hope for sufferers, researchers at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute have said. They have identified five areas of the brain they believe contain genes linked to the onset of migraine and said that studying these could "open new doors" to understanding the causes.
About 14% of adults in the UK are affected by the condition – usually an intense headache at the front or one side of the head. It is difficult to study because, between episodes, people are otherwise healthy. The
team
compared
DNA samples from more than 100,000 people, including those affected and healthy patients in the belief that many of the genes associated with migraine are interconnected and could potentially be adversely affecting the chemistry of brain cells – resulting in some of the symptoms of migraine. They said: "At a fundamental biological level we really don't know what causes a migraine.
“Many people find it very debilitating, becoming overly-sensitive to stimuli such as light and sound. They find it very difficult to function
and just want to lock themselves away in a darkened room.
"These five new genetic regions increase your susceptibility to develop migraine. There were already seven regions discovered, so we have 12 now. We think there should be many, many
more, so there is still a lot of work to do."
The researchers described the new discoveries as "very important to informing the direction of research", but said a cure – if one could be found – would be "many years down the line".

See a chap in a multicoloured striped jumper and you can bet it would probably have been
Mick Aston from Time Team
… but the jumpers will sadly no longer grace the screens on this loveable chap
Famous for his jazzy jumpers, archaeologist and broadcaster Mick Aston, who found fame with TV’ programme Time Team, has died aged 66.
Close friend and former colleague Phil Harding, who worked on the popular Channel 4 series with Professor Aston, said he had received the news from his son, James Aston. Time Team's official Facebook and Twitter accounts also paid tribute to the retired academic with the message: "It is with a very heavy heart that we've been informed that our dear colleague Mick Aston has passed away. Our
thoughts are with his family." Dr Phil Harding, who worked on the series with him said that although his friend had suffered health problems, learning of his death just two weeks after talking to him on the phone for the last time had come as a shock.
"It just seems so incredible, like a bad dream, but unfortunately this is no dream," the 62-year-old said. "He was a seriously good mate and a seriously good archaeologist, a unique man.
“Everybody loved him, he just had a way with people. I cannot believe there was
anybody who disliked him, he just had such a relaxed way. He had incredible knowledge and an effortless way of making archaeology accessible to people." Born and raised in Oldbury in the West Midlands, Prof Aston was instantly recognisable on television for his colourful jumpers. He lived in Somerset, and continued to take part in archaeology projects after leaving Time Team acrimoniously last year, when he accused the programme of dumbing down.

Tony Soprano Fry and Titchmarsh and the whingers Laurie dies aged 51 James Gandolfini, best known for his recent role as Tony Soprano in HBO’s hit series “The Soprano’s” died of a suspected heart attack at the age of 51 while on a family holiday in Rome last Wednesday. No cause of death has been given, but unconfirmed reports suggested a heart attack or stroke. Sopranos’ creator David Chase said Gandolfini was one of the greatest actors of all time. "He was a genius. Anyone who saw him even in the smallest of his performances knows that. He is one of the greatest actors of this or any time. A great deal of genius resided in those sad eyes."
Since The Sopranos ended in 2007, Gandolfini has appeared in a number of big-screen roles, including thriller Zero Dark Thirty and the comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. Gandolfini married former model Deborah Lin in 2008, and their daughter was born last year. He also has a son from a previous relationship.
Hugh Laurie has teased that he and former comedy partner Stephen Fry could embark on a reunion. He told Kirsty Young on Desert Island Discs that his favoured format would be 'a stage revue with a couple of wing chairs and a rug and a decanter of Madeira and my colleague will recount amusing stories and I will sit at the piano and play ditties'. Housewives’ favourite Alan Titchmarsh, 64, has said there should be 'less whingeing' from women about sexism in the TV industry during an interview with The Observer “Men in television tend to last a bit longer at the end of their careers, but it is women who make hay at the beginning,” he said, adding: “They don’t complain in their early days when they are disporting themselves on sports cars. I’d like to see a mix of all ages on TV and wish there could be less whingeing about it.” Last month 'Watchdog' presenter Anne Robinson made some similar remarks, saying “Television is about pretty pictures, if you want to
keep your job on telly, lose a stone and get a makeover, it’s as simple as that,” she said. “There are a great many issues more pressing in this world than whether Selina Scott has a job. Haven’t you noticed how much better Miriam O’Reilly and Arlene Phillips are looking since they were bumped? If they’d taken that much care of their appearance in the first place they would probably still be in a job.”

Suzi Perry presents coverage of the eighth round of the season at Silverstone (start time 1.00pm), where Mark Webber took the honours last year. The Red Bull driver reversed the top two qualifying positions to beat Ferrari's Fernando Alonso into second place. Webber's team-mate Sebastian Vettel finished third 12 months ago and the standings leader will be looking for an even stronger performance this time around.

Pauline McGregor I was wondering what your readers thought about the conviction of teacher Jeremy Forrester for child abduction last week. On the one hand the man was a teacher and in a position of trust with minors and therefore should have rejected the 15-year-old pupil but, as she told the court that she made all the running and that she had begged him to go with her to France or she didn’t know what would become of her, can he really be convicted of abduction? One year older and this would never have come to court in the first place, and
the girl has made it very clear that she was in no way “abducted” anyway. It seems to me that Mr Forrester could well be convicted of being stupid and being led by his nether regions but I do feel that this law should be reformed. The sentence of over five years seems particularly harsh and would appear to have been insisted upon by the CPP by way of taking the heat off the police who perhaps didn’t investigate this case enough when they first heard what was rumoured to be going on between the pair months before.

I spotted your hoax letter about the police radar speed gun clocking a Tornado jet. I understand that story, in various guises, has been around since at least 1995. It is, of course, not possible – power of police gun too low, different types of radar etc. However, this is true: I used to be a police officer and I remember one time that a radar gun was accidentally knocked off a
table in a police canteen. To check that it was still working they pushed a tea trolley across the room and clocked it doing 3 mph. Until then I thought that when I was riding my motorcycle, I would be too small a target for the radar guns, but if a tea trolley is not safe, then a motorcycle stands no chance! Incidentally, there are new radar cameras, 5 km apart, on both sides of the

prey to in Torreblanca last week. We were staying at a Torreblanca hotel and walking back from the beach when we were approached by an Englishman, grey unkempt hair, tall 50s a bit untidy but not a beggar – he obviously was a resident. He said I “Are you English, I have just had my car towed away by the police from Torreblanca station as I had parked in a motorcycle bay. I have only a few euros to get into town etc. I went into the hotel and they did not help me but gave me a map and a newspaper!” He also enquired where we were from and where we were staying and other small talk. Like a twit I gave him 20 euros and our room number so he could return it when he could. He, of course, assured us
Would it not have been enough, after the girl’s evidence, that he was banned from ever working with “children” again? When I was 13 and 14 years old, I went into pubs and clubs and was never once asked about my age (in fact, the first time I was asked was when I was 32 and looked younger then than I did at the younger age with less make-up on!). So, fellow readers, what do you think?
Editor says: Over to you. I’m sure there will be a lot of “fors” and “againsts”.

N340 in Mijas. They not only check the speed as you drive through but also, I understand, the average speed between the two points. Editor says: Speeding tea trollies … whatever next! Actually, our proof reader said she had seen the report before as well some while ago.

he would. He had a strong hand shake and said his name was Paul. This was not worth reporting to police, but perhaps I should have.
Editor says: Just another way of getting money from people here. However, I would not have given him your room number as that is one sure way of telling him that all your stuff is in your room and you are away from it. Ideal information for a burglar! Your name would have been sufficient for him to have returned the money to the hotel reception for them to pass on to you It is an unhappy reality that sometimes people have a genuine problem and we should be able to help each other out in times of need but there are so many of these scams going on that we are mostly loathe to do it anymore. Such a shame.

Animal Astronauts N
This week I want to pay tribute to all the unsung heroes of space travel; that is the animals that tried it first. ovember 3rd 1957 saw the launch of a Russian dog called Laika on board Sputnik 2. Scientists believed humans would be unable to survive the launch or the conditions of outer space, so they viewed flights by animals as a necessary precursor to human missions. As little was known about the impact of space flight on living creatures at the time of Laika's mission, and as the technology to de-orbit and return to Earth had not yet been invented, then there were no provisions for Laika's survival.
L
aika was a three-year-old female mongrel found as a stray wandering the streets of Moscow. Soviet scientists chose to use stray dogs since they assumed that such animals had already learned to endure conditions of extreme cold and hunger. Her true pedigree is unknown, although it is generally accepted that she was part husky and part terrier. To adapt her to the confines of the tiny cabin of Sputnik 2, she was kept in progressively smaller cages for periods up to 20 days. The extensive close confinement caused her to stop urinating or defecating and caused her general condition to deteriorate. In truth she was undernourished and dehydrated.
L
aika was placed inside the capsule of Sputnik 2 on 31st October 1957, three days before launch. At that time of year the temperature at the launch site was extremely cold and a hose connected to a heater that was meant to keep her container warm failed. Therefore two assistants were assigned to keep a constant watch on Laika before launch. Sensors showed her heart rate was 103 beats/min before launch and increased to 240 beats/min during the lift off. Laika completed three orbits of the Earth. But after seven hours into the flight it was decided that she had endured enough and no further sign of life was received from the spacecraft. Poisoned food had been fed to her.
F B
ive months later, after 2,570 orbits, Sputnik 2 disintegrated – along with Laika's remains– during re-entry on April 14, 1958.
ut although Laika was the first animal to orbit the Earth she was not the first in space. At least 10 other dogs were launched into suborbital flights before the historic date of April 12th 1961, when Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. The Americans had first launched fruit flies (of all things) on board a captured German V2 rocket in February 1947. The rocket achieved 68 miles high that qualified it for space travel before successfully parachuting back to Earth. In 1949 Albert, a Rhesus monkey, was blasted into space and this time reached
O
83 miles high. Unfortunately the parachute failed to deploy and Albert hit the ground at over 1,300 miles an hour.
n January 31st 1961, Ham the Chimp (pictured above) was launched in a Mercury capsule aboard a Redstone missile. Ham had been trained to pull levers to receive rewards of banana pellets and avoid electric shocks delivered through electrodes fitted to his feet. His flight demonstrated the ability to perform tasks during space flight (and avoid getting electrocuted). Three months later on May 5th 1961 the United States sent Alan Shepard into space to become the first American in space.
O
ther animals have been on further journeys. On September 14th 1968 the Russians launched a tortoise (what!) around the Moon and in 1969 two bullfrogs were launched on a one way mission into deep space to study the effects of space motion sickness. The crew of Apollo 17 carried five mice to the Moon and back although one died and was ‘ceremonially buried’ in space via the toilet waste dump.
S
ince then a whole menagerie of animals have been in space. From silk worms to chickens’ eggs and Madagascar hissing cockroaches to South African flat rock scorpions. But my favourite has to be on June 28, 2007 when Bigelow Aerospace launched Mexican jumping beans into space, what in God’s name did they expect to discover from that?!
S
o take a minute to salute the brave unsung heroes who weren’t given the choice but instead were chosen to boldly go where no man had gone before.

McNish triumphs at the Renault’s new F1 Power Le Mans 24 hours Unit-2014 unveiled Allan McNish won the Le Mans 24 for a third time as Audi clinched a deserved victory at La Sarthe. The event was overshadowed though by a fatal crash involving Danish driver Allan Simonsen.
The fatal crash happened just 10 minutes into the 90th Le Mans 24-hour race on Saturday. The safety car led for most of a wet first hour of the 90th anniversary edition of the race after Simonsen had crashed heavily in his Aston Martin.
Danish driver Allan Simonsen passed away in hospital following the crash. The 34-year-old Dane, competing in the GTE Am class, spun off into the barriers on lap three at Tertre Rouge after just 10 minutes while Germany's Andre Lotterer was leading in the number one Audi R18 e-tron quattro diesel hybrid. Repairs to the barriers continued and Simonsen was taken to hospital.
"In a serious condition, Allan Simonsen was transferred immediately to the Circuit Medical Centre where he died soon after due to his injuries," read a statement on the race's website. Simonsen, father of one child, was participating for the seventh time at Le Mans. He is the first driver to die at Le Mans since 1997 when Frenchman Sebastien Enjolras was killed during the prequalifying event. The last driver to die as a result of an incident in the race itself was Austrian Josef Gartner in 1986.
It was a fourth successive Le Mans 24 victory for Audi. The winning team also comprised Frenchman Loic Duval, who had never previously won the
endurance race, and Dane Tom Kristensen, who takes his record tally of wins to nine. Anthony Davidson, Sebastien Buemi and Stephane Sarrazin came second for Toyota, while another Audi team of Oliver Jarvis, Marc Gene and Lucas Di Grassi completed the podium finish. Several hours of racing were lost because of
safety car periods, of which there were a record total of 11. The winning total of 348 laps was 30 short of last year's tally. Former Formula 1 driver McNish previously won at Le Mans in 1998 and 2008, with the latter also in partnership with Kristensen.

Renault presented its innovative new power unit at the Paris Air Show at Le Bourget. Designed to the new technical regulations to be used in the FIA Formula One World Championship from 2014 onwards, the new generation Power Unit is officially named Energy F12014 – reflecting synergies with the pioneering fuelefficient Energy engine range in Renault road cars. The race-intent Power Unit revealed for the first time demonstrates a radical leap in Formula One powertrain technology, achieving ground-breaking fuel efficiency from its direct injection turbocharged engine, allied to cutting edge energy recovery systems and electrification. In 2014, Formula 1 will enter a new era. After three years of planning and development, the most significant technical change to hit the sport in more than two decades will be introduced. Engine regulations form the major part of the coming revolution, with the introduction of a new

generation of Power Units that combine a 1.6-litre V6 turbocharged engine with energy recovery systems that will dramatically increase efficiency by harvesting energy dissipated as heat in the exhaust or brakes. The maximum power of the new Power Unit will exceed the output of current V8 F1 engines, however, fuel efficiency will be radically
improved. With only 100kg permitted for the race, the new units will use 35% less fuel than their predecessors. Alain Prost, Renault ambassador and four-times Formula 1 World Champion said “From 2014 we will bring engines to the fore and redress the balance in F1. An engine is the heart of a car, from next year it returns to the heart of our sport.”

e `Big Easy´ claims Nadal out of Wimbledon Rafael Nadal was sensationally beaten in the first round Munich Open of The Championships on Monday. South African Ernie Els birdied the last hole to seal a oneshot victory over Thomas Bjorn at the Munich Open. The 43-year-old four-time major winner finished with a 69, which included four birdies and a bogey, for a final total of 18-under par.
Darcis, who had never before beaten a Top 5 player, finished the match with his 13th ace. He converted three of his 11 break point opportunities for victory in two hours and 55 minutes.
Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn also fired a 69 to finish runner-up on 17 under.
Els, who won last year's British Open, began the day in a share of the lead with Swede Alexander Noren and Frenchman Alexander Levy. He and Bjorn had both been on 17 under with six holes remaining with Levy a shot further back. But Bjorn had a double bogey at the 14th which ended his hopes and Els's third successive round of 69 was enough for his 28th European Tour victory and his first at this event.
"It's been a long while," he said afterwards. "I've had a great weekend in Germany and tried a long time to win this golf tournament. I made it pretty tough for myself again.
"I stayed with the basics. It's great to get my name on this wonderful trophy."
Els also admitted the win is a boost ahead of
the defence of his Open title at Muirfield from 18 July.
"Obviously it gives me a lot," he added. "Wire to wire you've got the pressure and every night you've got to sleep on it.
"This is quite a week for me. There were a lot of strong players in the field. I'm really looking forward to Muirfield."
Wayne’s Poker Tips It is all hotting up at the 2013 WSOP. Day 26 of the 2013 WSOP will hand out two bracelets by the night’s end of Monday 24th June.
One bracelet will be in the $2,500 No Limit Hold’em Four-Max event and the other in the $1,500 Seven card Stud Hi-Lo event. With the WSOP in full swing some new faces some made have breakthroughs but the old guard is still holding its own as the rankings for POY (player of the year) show.
The 2013 WSOP Player of the Year standings fluctuated wildly with players new seven cracking into the top 20 spots. Daniel Negreanu continues to nurse his lead but Tom Schneider‘s two bracelet wins rocketed him up to the second spot to cut Negreanu’s lead to about 20 points.
Negreanu added 31 points to his lead with two recent cashes – 39th in the $5,000 Six-Max No Limit Hold’em and 49th in the $3,000 Mixed-Max events.
Steve Darcis, currently No. 135 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, won 7-6(4), 7-6(8), 6-4 on No. 1 Court to condemn the fifth seed to his first loss in the first round of a Grand Slam Championship
If Negreanu continues to hold the lead he will be the first person to WSOP as repeat Player of the Year after winning it in 2004. Schneider picked up a second bracelet in the last week, sweeping the HORSE events for the summer. He also picked up a 60th place finish in the $3,000 Pot Limit Omaha event and put his winnings at over $500,000 for the series.
Jason Duval, Erick Lindgren, Scott Clements, Max Steinberg, Greg Isaac Muellerand Hagerling all enter the top Clements with 20 spending just one week outside the top 20.
Clements picked up two cashes in the past week, including a second final table where he finished fifth in the $3,000 Pot
Limit Omaha event. He also cashed in a $1,000 No Limit Hold’em event. Lindgren has a successful series with five cashes and he won his WSOP bracelet in the $5,000 Six-Max No Limit Hold’em event. Just a few days before his bracelet win Lindgren cashed in the $3,000 Mixed-Max event in 45th place for $6,475.
Mueller moved up in the rankings thanks to two WSOP final tables in a week. He finished eighth in the $5,000 Limit Hold’em event and third in the $5,000 HORSE that Schneider won.
“Sometimes you play well and you have the chance to win,” said Nadal, who arrived in London six days ago. “Sometimes you play worse and your opponent plays well and you lose. I just want to congratulate Darcis. I think he played a fantastic match. At the end (of the day it) is not a tragedy. That is sport.” a
“Two weeks ago I was in fantastic situation,
The agony and the ecstasy of losing or winning in the first round
winning a fantastic tournament (at Roland Garros). Two weeks later, I lost here in the first round. That's the positive and the negative thing about this sport. It is tough losing in the first round.”
Darcis is the lowest ranked player to defeat Nadal at any event since World No. 690 Joachim Johansson at the 2006 Stockholm Open. Gustavo Kuerten was the last
reigning Roland Garros champion to lose in the first round of Wimbledon in 1997.
Nadal, who had reached nine finals in nine tournaments since returning from a knee injury in February, was on a 22-match winning streak. He dropped to a 433 match record on the season. Last year, Nadal lost to Lukas Rosol in the Wimbledon second round.
Monty to play the Senior British Open Former European number one Colin Montgomerie will make his senior debut at the Senior Open Championship at Royal Birkdale from 25th to 28th of July.
The Scot who was 50 on Sunday, the minimum age for competing on the seniors tour, won a record eight European Tour Order of Merit titles. He captured a total of 31 European Tour events, and rose to second in the world rankings, but never won a major title. "I'm under no illusion as to how good the seniors standard is," he said.
Montgomerie won seven successive Order of Merits from 1993 to 1999 but is without a title since the European Open in 2007. In six events on the European Tour this season he has missed the cut four times, with a best finish of tied 29th in his opening event, the Volvo Golf Champions tournament in South Africa in January.
"I've played recently with guys who are younger
than my children," added Montgomerie. "You say, 'hang on a minute, this isn't quite a level playing field'. Suddenly I'll be the youngest, against guys like Bernhard Langer who is six years older than me.
"I'll be a rookie, and therefore hopefully in an advantageous position. I've been playing against guys who are 23 or 24 years old and they are hitting the ball a mile, so it's about
time that parity came along."
Montgomerie will face stern competition from several of his former Ryder Cup team-mates and opponents.
