PSI LAMBDA SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON The Psi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. offer scholarships to young men who attend Brainerd High, Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences, Howard School for Arts and Technology, and Tyner Academy. On Saturday April 18, the luncheon was held on the campus of UTC to present the Scholarship Candidates based on the fraternity's cardinal principles of Academics, Service, Leadership and Brotherhood. We had 12 young men who were chosen to advance to the interview stage of our selection process. This year we are pleased to award scholarships to four extraordinary young men from those schools. The scholarship recipients were: Nicholas Jackson (CSAS), Fredrick Walker (Brainerd), Marcus Shropshire (Howard) and Damond Torrey (Tyner). We are proud of not only the scholarship recipients, but all of the exceptional young men we met during this academic school year. The guest speaker for the 2009 Scholarship Luncheon was Councilman Andrae McGary who presented a message of hope, inspiration and encouragement to all in attendance. Special thanks to Chick-fil-A, Carmike Cinemas and Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union for their special gifts to each of the 12 students in recognition of their academic achievement.

FRATERNITY HISTORY Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first intercollegiate Greek letter fraternity established for African-American students, was organized at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York on December 4, 1906. The seven visionary founders known as the “Jewels” of the Fraternity are: Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy. The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice educationally and socially – at Cornell. The Fraternity was founded on principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character and the uplifting of humanity. The Psi Lambda Chapter was founded on May 15, 1926 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

SCHOLARSHIP HISTORY The Fraternity’s National program “GO-TO-HIGH-SCHOOL, GO-TO-COLLEGE” dates back to 1916. During this time, staggering numbers of African-American students were not completing high school or pursuing a college education prompting Alpha Phi Alpha to begin a campaign to increase the education level of the African-American community. The program consisted of three components – knowledge, attitude, and skills. The three program components were designed to help young people focus their attention on completing high school and pursuing a college education or other form of training after graduating high school. In 1989, the program became a renewed emphasis for the Fraternity. Since its establishment in 1926, Psi Lambda has promoted this program by annually providing scholarships, visiting the local schools, tutoring, conducting workshops, and providing mentoring for young men in the Chattanooga community. In 2002, the Chapter established the “Psi Lambda Educational Foundation, Inc.” as a Tennessee non-profit corporation with 501 (c) 3 tax exempt status. With the establishment of the Foundation, we began awarding our annual scholarships in honor and memory of Alpha Brothers who reached the pinnacle of success in their chosen profession, and through their contributions and accomplishments serve as role models for young men to emulate. Program and Description Research and anecdotal evidence show specifically that Big Brothers Big Sisters’ one-to-one mentoring helps atrisk youth overcome the many challenges they face. Little Brothers and Sisters are less likely to begin using illegal drugs, consume alcohol, skip school and classes, or engage in acts of violence. They have greater selfesteem, confidence in their academic performance, and are able to get along better with their friends and families. There are three core Big Brothers Big Sisters programs: Big Brothers Big Sisters Community-based Volunteers go on two outings a month with a “Little” in their community for at least one year. Activities include going to ball games, fishing, movies, working on homework, going to the park, or just hanging out together! Volunteers and their “Littles” also attend activities sponsored by Big Brothers Big Sisters and benefit from many community discounts and free admissions. During there unstructured outings, relationships are cultivated that provide children with skills to manage everyday challenges. Big Brothers Big Sisters in Schools Volunteers provide “Littles” with one-on-one time and attention in their schools or after-school sites, typically once a week for one hour during the academic year. Volunteers can have lunch with their Little, play games, work on schoolwork, or go to the playground. As their friendships evolve, volunteers and children discover ways to make schools and learning fun. Amachi Big Brothers Big Sisters: “People of Faith Mentoring Children of Promise.” People of faith spend one-on-one time with children who have an incarcerated parent. Research states that children who have an incarcerated parent are 6 times more likely than their peers to be incarcerated themselves one day. A volunteer can help stop the cycle of incarceration through being a friend and a positive role model. Volunteers are required to go on 2 outings a month for at least one year. Matches can enjoy many fun, community activities together and build a strong friendship in the process!

In Loving Memory of Al Seals

A Family man, a Friend and a Brother These are just a few of descriptions of the man known as Al Seals. Al was very passionate about his Alma Mater Tuskegee and anyone that met him knew it. He was an Allstate agent and a lot of his customers became his friends.

Being an avid photographer he captured many moments that will never be forgotten. Much like his quirks and good humor, Al will never be forgotten. Al left us here on earth to be in heaven on January 2nd 2006. However, he will always be in our minds and hearts.

We miss you Al
