“Art is everything, art is everywhere. Art is creativity that makes sense and sometimes doesn’t make sense. Art is how you look at something, it is a perspective. Art is not just something that appears to be but also everything that makes up a thing. Art is a picture or idea that stands out to you. Art is black and white with a colorful soul. Art is a sound, a vision, a mindless expression. Art is your opinion on what you believe is art. If everything is art then nothing isn’t art.” -Tiera Spencer

Spring 2016

Editor’s letter: Reborn. Art & Soul, the creative arts magazine of Honolulu Community College, has a history dating back three decades. But, somehow, over ten years ago, it faded away and disappeared. Now, we’re bringing it back, and our cover tells a story of that rebirth. The white hair in the image stands for what we haven’t seen for so long, for the vision we lost when the magazine went dark. When we decided that we wanted to revive the magazine, we knew there would be challenges to be faced, so in the cover picture, I gave color to the brain, which helped us imagine how to bring the magazine back to life. The color in the face represents how the magazine would look and stand out from the

past Art & Soul issues. The color in the neck represents the voice of the student artists whose creativity can be heard and seen again. The color that goes into the body represents the student body, which enthusiastically responded to our call for submissions and to the other people, including a professional magazine company, alumni and others, who helped us understand the process of how to make this happen and stand out from the rest of other colleges around us. The bright color on the left side of the body shows how life was brought back into the magazine and on campus by making this happen in a short amount of time. Reborn. And planning to be around for many years to come.

Janica Marie Pascua Paint Me The first boy I fell in love with Said he’d paint me in colors He’d sworn I’d never seen before. But he painted me red— Screaming! Yelling! Bleeding! Red. And I told him he could take his paint brush, And leave, Because the colors on my body No longer made me happy. And he left. The next boy was covered in blue. He said we could mix our colors, And make some purple, And it’d be the prettiest color I’d ever seen. Purple was pretty. It was fun and colorful, But it started to make me feel dependent, Drowning in another person’s color, Just to feel alive, And feel like I needed it to belong. So I told him, “I’m sorry I can’t take my color back,” And left. The boy after that made me feel no different. His soul was brown, But when his hands touched me, They were yellow. But yellow on purple Doesn’t make A rainbow! It made me brown— Almost as brown as his soul was. And I wanted so badly To burn the color off. But I couldn’t. I was so addicted to Being the same color as his soul Because I thought it made me Important To him. But that’s not what It was. So I broke away from his brown soul, Told him,

“I’m sorry,” And left. When I finally fell in love With a boy who’s colors were in Every spectrum, I cried. I got down on my knees, And sobbed so hard, That my lungs burned, And my eyes hurt, And he took the tears I cried, And washed me. He told me that In order for me to see the rainbow I needed to understand That I already had it. That the colors Placed on my body By the ones I loved before Did not define the colors I had Within me.

He washed away The tainted paint And smiled as he saw me Glow. Beneath the paint That covered my skin, Was a soul too contained. He told me, “Look! Do you see what I see? You’re a spectrum of colors I’ve never seen before, And you’re beautiful inside And out. Love yourself, Before you love me. Rainbows appear after the rain, And sometimes, When the light is strong enough, You can see a double rainbow.”

Keala Mathias My place of peace... No matter how many times the ocean gets sent away, it refuses to stop kissing the shoreline. That's similar to me, I cannot stop coming to this place I love, I call this my place of peace. Funny how some things can put your whole world on pause with feelings of tranquility. I have a hard time believing on how this feeling is for free. Life is moving way to fast now, well to fast enough for me. Like I need to be at this place some how, just to put my mind at ease. Can somebody take me to this place I love, I call it my place of peace...

The Whole Woman The woman, a being so magnificent and effortlessly agile An encompassing silhouette of limitless grace and style A stunning temple that gifts the earth with a new being An ability to share infinite love, a force of healing Bearing breasts with the ability to sustain life With a soul made of strength from varying lessons of strife Her soothing voice fills the room like gleaming stars of the night Ah the lady, a radiant beam of calming light A soul made of gold, fleeting with timelessness Withholding a maternal instinct of fascinating finesse Respect her, love her, let her inhabit the earth For she has earned all its glories by realizing her self worth

Chicken Fried Steak

Are you serious? I wasn’t even looking at her! Sure, she was on the menu, but make no mistake. Your beauty is timeless, so I don’t mind the wait. You are the main course, my entrée. You’re medium rare, and a little bit country. There is no surprise, there are a lot of sides that want to get inside or even past my eyes and tried to make look like a fool who claimed the wrong prize. They all tried, but I cannot deny that I’m nothing but deprived if I don’t have my chicken fried. Wait! Maybe it was fate. When I picked you up at a quarter to 8, I was running late and calling you. At this rate, I’m falling for you. But then I crash hard into the ground. Splat! Your friends be saying, “Yeah… He’s great.” I shake it off, but I can’t see straight. I see stars… That’s the headlight of my car. Let’s go, we’ll be late. We get there on our first date Don’t you remember? In the middle of September and we met at that shopping center you LOVE so much. No? Was I wrong? Well I digress. And yet, I have to get something off my chest. You see, I’m a very picky eater. I like to take the toppings off first from my pizza.

I avoid anything green and most pasta (Spaghetti doesn’t count). Soda and coffee? Yuck. The bitter taste sucks. And that fizzy sugar fuzzy feeling? I can’t even. Where was I? Oh right, my food story. Sorry, we all get hungry. I just miss that dish that loved me. Someone who I adored, and it’s too late to express myself in a metaphor. Truth is, I didn’t reciprocate my emotions. When I was showing desire, she was showing devotion. I swear your love is like heaven. I’m sad I didn’t ask for seconds. We were on that road when things started going downhill. Now we sit across this dining room, I narrowly avoid the bill. Every gentleman has to pay right? It’s a matter of pride Deep down inside, I still believe that the love you gave was real. I swallowed my words, cause I couldn’t say how I feel. But I know what it’s like to hit home plate. And honey, your love is sweeter than strawberry shortcakes. You are my favorite meal at any time of day. You are my chicken fried steak, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Fashion Technology program provides students a chance to turn the creative visions in their mind into practical, wearable realities. The work begins early in the year with preliminary sketches like these that are refined and developed over time. Then the students apply theoretical and practical skills like industrial sewing, draping, marking, cutting, fabric selection, and more to create the finished garments like the ones which draw rave reviews at the program’s annual, end-of-the-year fashion show.

The Cosmetology program provides its students with many opportunities to express their creativity and is committed to teaching the development and delivery of innovative techniques that can be used professionally. During their studies, students are encouraged to play with the elements of form, texture and color, as well as the principles of repetition, alternation, progression, and contrast in design. The results can be amazing, as in this collection of photos, below and right, from a Halloween event this past fall.

MELE program The Music & Entertainment Learning Experience program “doesn’t create Grammy-award winning performers and engineers; it just gives you the basic information and you go do what you want with it,” says student Devon Rosete. The on-campus studio is a place where the creativity of the artists meets the technical expertise of the audio engineers to bring the two sides of the music industry together. “Anyone who loves music and wants to make a career out of it and has a good attitude belongs in the MELE program,” Rosete said.

Triston Leo Neyra Honestly Verse 1: I need a signal when you’re gonna talk to me It seems that I got a crush on you, baby Tell me the truth when you look my eyes, Would you leave me later for some other guy? It’s all confusing, but I’ll give it a chance, (yeah) You know I know nothing about love and romance But I’ll put in work if you do the same girl One day we’ll kiss under the pouring rain I’ll do my best just to treat you right I would trade it all just to see you tonight Chorus: I can honestly say it’s a first Because, I’m at a loss for words Whenever I see this beautiful girl She means the world to me I can honestly say it’s a new feeling She makes my heart uneasy And it’s getting harder to breathe in She means the world to me (the world to me) Verse 2: When I’m asleep, I see you in my dreams I’m caught up in my fantasies Where it’s only you and me Every day I think of ways to make you smile And very minute spent with you is all worthwhile Forgive me girl; I’m just being polite All I asking for is to see you tonight Bridge: So tell me, honestly Would you put your trust in me? I’ll be there for you; I swear it’s true. So let me start by saying, Baby I love you.

Never Forget Verse 1: When I met you girl, I could tell that you were one of a kind Cause ever since that day, you would never leave my mind And as the days go by, my heart knew it was going blind I just had this stupid dream that I could make you mine Now the first time we spoke, you took me by surprise I would never forget when I looked in her eyes I made a promise to myself whenever you walked by I would try to talk to you and never leave your side Pre-Chorus 1: But times changed, and I don’t see you today Thinking why the hell did I ever walk away? Do you got a man who loves you the way That I did? No way, no way Chorus: You just gotta move on and keep it strong There is nothing wrong with loving you But there are times I miss, like when we first kissed Who knew that I would ever think about you? I just won’t, won’t, won’t forget you (x3) I just won’t forget the times that we had I just won’t, won’t, won’t forget you (x3) I just won’t forget the times that we had together Verse 2: Whatever you do girl, I don’t want it to stop Cause with me and you, we can both reach the top But we also knew this journey’s coming to an end Hope that once we’re through, we can still be more than friends But I’m packing up my stuff and heading out the door Never ever thought I’d feel this way before And I wonder how long until heart feels sore When I’m back in your driveway wanting you more Pre-Chorus 2: But times changed, and I don’t see you today Thinking why the hell did I ever walk away? Do you got a dude who does the kind of things That I do? No way, no way (Chorus x2)

Bonsai art

For most of his life, Christopher Maria has been growing bonsai, the 2,000-year-old traditional Japanese art form of miniature plants in pots to create a pleasant experience for grower and viewer alike. Maria has trees in various stages of growth, like the ones at top right, which won’t reach their full artistic potential for many years. At the top left is a pine tree done in formal upright style with the branches angled slightly downward as you would see them weighted in nature from years of heavy snow. At right is a very old Fukien tea tree. It has a strong trunk that is accentuated by the short branches.
