he Chesapeake Region of the Porsche Club of America serves it’s club members and hosts activities within the Baltimore, Annapolis and surrounding geographic area, including Maryland’s Eastern Shore. fter, what many people I’ve spoken with lately have uniformly declared as the “worst winter ever!’ (aren’t they all?), the warm sunshine seems to have finally broken through here in the Baltimore/DC area and we are all basking in some truly delightful climate change!

Pear Sauvignon Blanc, one could practically taste summer! Kudos to our tour leaders Mike Cook and Steve Graham for another successful outing.

This past month we were also treated to a terrific TECH session at the COLLECTORS CAR CORALL, where our Board Chair for Insurance, Lee Rock, gave our members a presentation on insurance which left most of us standing in line afterwards waiting to ask questions and hear more!

This is sure to be a very unique event which has already attracted the attention of PCA National’s Digital Media chief, Damon Lowney. He has asked, and we have agreed, to have him join the trip and to record it for PCA’s website. It should be interesting!

Such is the state of our Region. There is a lot going on and even more exciting events in planning. I’m always happy to hear from you at president@pcachs.org and look forward to seeing you on the road soon!

Project 944S: Part Two - More Than

Our close friend Darwin was chomping at the bit for a winter project and helpfully offered to pull the motor and get to work. His enthusiasm was equally matched by a bit of procrastination and as we slipped from 2014 to 2015, new parts were stacking up. We set a date in mid-March for me to fly out to Salt Lake City and collect Red Sonja.

As the date approached, Darwin got started in earnest before a family emergency divided his attention and put Red Sonja on the back burner. We discussed pushing the date to the right but based on our schedules, it would have moved to June giving us a scant few days to prepare Red Sonja for Parade. The final decision to continue forward with our original date wasn't an easy decision to make but ultimately it was the one we would live with.

On a cold and blustery day in March I departed from BWI and arrived at bright and sunny Salt Lake City. A short drive later I arrived at Darwin’s house and could finally see Red Sonja firsthand. She was beautiful! Meets The Eye had received a full top-end rebuild from a “reputable German shop” but had little supporting documentation. The DOHC 944 motors utilize a metal chain and oil-fed tensioner to keep the camshafts in-time. Imagine our surprise and horror when we looked down into the head and saw the tensioner held in place by gravity and friction!

One of the mounting bolts was clearly visible laying in the head but the second bolt was nowhere to be found. Since we had already removed the oil pan and inspected the oil galleys with a magnet probe we were confident the second bolt was not located within the engine. Our concern grew

once we noticed the metal oil pipe feeding the tensioner had sheared from the stress. A frantic phone call to the local Porsche dealership filled me with dread when I was informed a replacement part was still available, albeit in Germany. With a new option not feasible based on our timeline, we had to come up with other options. In a stroke of lucky fate, Minta’s decision to remain at home became the lifeline we needed to get Red Sonja into a safe, drivable state. We had recently disassembled our spare S2 motor and through Minta’s meticulous organizational skills we knew exactly where to find our spare oil pipe.

She dropped the oil pipe into an overnight package and by Thursday morning we were back on track. Unfortunately, we weren’t finished with the discovery process. At some point in the past, a mouse had decided to declare Red Sonja it’s home and crowned itself lord of the 13 944. We continued to find the remnants of in-

detected, we started to pack her up for the drive home starting early the next morning. My confidence in our decision restored, I quickly fell asleep.

We continued our assault on the drivetrain in earnest, fixing issues as they were discovered and slowly returning Red Sonja to a drivable state. My confidence in “fly out, drive home” was eroding but I was still optimistic I would make it to Maryland in our new car. Late Thursday night we finally hit pay dirt and accomplished what we had set out to do from the start, return Red Sonja to a running state. She coughed to life and quickly set in to a high idle. Oil pressure was strong and steady, we didn’t hear any sounds of impending doom and the test drive reaffirmed the taught handling and impressive power delivery compared to our 944 NA. With no red flags

His friendship and support perfectly embodies the PCA motto, “It’s not the cars, it’s the people!” and there is absolutely no way we could have done this without him.

Porsche GT5 and A Ferr family of turbocharged and normally aspirated boxer engines, which will come in four, six and eightcylinder formats. The new engine family will generate much higher power densities and feature some innovative fuel-saving tech.

There will be one for the lower-powered Boxster, Cayman and 911 models. There will also be a mechanical all-wheel-drive version and one with electric drive to the front wheels.

Sources indicate that the new architecture will come with the option of both mechanical and combined hybrid/electric all-wheel drive, the latter using an electrically driven front axle similar to that of the 918 Spyder.

The modular engineering principle has also been applied to the design of the chassis’ front end, so it will accommodate upgraded spring and dampers systems and a wider range of brake set-ups, depending on which model is being underpinned.

Porsche’s eight-cylinder supercar is expected to go on sale in 2017, closely followed by replacements for the Boxster, Cayman and 911. The entry-level Boxster and Cayman are expected to have a 2.0-litre turbocharged flat four good for about 280bhp, with hotter versions set to have up to 350bhp.

The same goes for the new structure. Porsche is thought to be switching to a construction technique that uses aerospace bonding, riveting and welding to enable the basic sports car architecture to be upgraded with lightweight materials.

By 2019, Porsche should have moved its entire sports car family to the new architecture and nextgen engines. But the structure and components underpinning the new sports car models cannot be strictly called a platform. That’s because of the wide variation of requirements for a family of cars that will stretch from a 280bhp four-cylinder entry-level model to a new range-topping model with about 600bhp.

Just as the Lamborghini Huracán uses a carbonfibre rear bulkhead and centre tunnel within an aluminium structure, Porsche’s new architecture is expected to be upgraded with aluminium and composite structural elements for the 988.

As for the number of body styles, the architecture is remarkably flexible. Aside from different engine locations and sizes, it is also ‘package protected’ for fixed-head, cabriolet and targa styles.

U.S. Boxster, Cayman To CEO Matthias Mueller: “We will see how it works.”

Amy Wilson Automotive News May 18, 2015 - 12:01 am ET ATLANTA -- Porsche will begin selling four-cylinder versions of its Boxster and Cayman sports cars in the U.S. in mid-2016, CEO Matthias Mueller said. Porsche last sold four-cylinder engines in this market 20 years ago.

Mueller acknowledged that Porsche could consider four-cylinder engines in the U.S. for other nameplates.

"First of all, we will have it in the Boxster and Cayman successor," Mueller told Automotive News. "And then we will see how it works and how successful it is and how the customers will react on that, and then we will take the next decisions."

Executives confirmed last year that a new flat-four boxer engine was planned for the freshened Boxster and Cayman, but they didn't say which markets would get it. A flat-four engine has pistons that are horizontally opposed, instead of in line or in a V. The engine is expected to be turbocharged, and although Porsche has not confirmed details, displacement could come in 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter versions. It would lower vehicle weight and improve fuel efficiency and handling. According to a German report, Mueller has suggested that the new engine could produce "up to 395 horsepower."

The Boxster and Cayman won't be Porsche's only four-cylinder vehicles. It sells a four-cylinder version of its new Macan crossover in China and the U.K. Until now, Porsche executives have said the fourcylinder Macan isn't slated for the U.S. But Mueller said Porsche hasn't decided about that.

Porsche sold vehicles powered by flat-four engines from 1948 through 1976. It sold inline four-cylinder engines from 1976 through 1995. Porsche's last nameplate sold in the U.S. with a four-cylinder 20 engine was the 968 in 1995. ***

Is Porsche Working On New Electric Super Sedan To Compete With Tesla?

According to the fine men and women over at Autocar, Porsche is working on a brand new executive car that will be aimed squarely at BMW's 5 -series in size, and Tesla's Model S in terms of technology and likely pricing. The new sedan is rumored to be developed with two power-train systems at launch (both driven through the rear wheels), including a true plug-in electric version, and a hydrogen fuel cell electric version. Both are expected to launch in late 2017 or early 2018. This information was gleaned through a series of patent applications filed in various markets.

RACE/TRACK 993 $48,000 Many on Rennlist and in PCA know my 993 to be a very well developed and prepared car that is fast and forgiving. It is that rarest of racecars in that it has taken me to the podium quite a few times and, yet, it has never been wrecked.

This car spent the first four years four or five years as a street car and then became a car that I drove 99% on the track. It is technically street legal since it's tagged and titled. I've actually been stopped/been given warnings by two police officers, and neither of them cited me for the loud exhaust, roll cage, etc. Lucky, I suppose. I have a lifetime emissions waiver from the state of Maryland, so it never needs to be smogged again.
