he Chesapeake Region of the Porsche Club of America serves it’s club members and hosts activities within the Baltimore, Annapolis and surrounding geographic area, including Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The general objectives of PCACHS are, as indicated in the by laws: Promote the highest standards of courtesy and safety on the roads. Promote the enjoyment and sharing of goodwill and fellowship engendered by owning a Porsche vehicle and engaging in such social or other events as may be agreeable to the membership. Promote the maintenance of the highest standards of operation and performance of the marquee by sharing and exchanging technical and mechanical information. Establish and maintain mutually beneficial relations with Porsche AG, Porsche Cars North America (PCNA), Porsche dealers, and other independent service sources to the end the marquee shall proper and continue to enjoy its unique leadership and position in sports car annals. Promote the interchange of ideas and suggestions with other PCA Regions throughout North America and the world, and in such corporation as may be desirable. Establish such mutually corporative relationships with other car clubs as may be desirable. Establish a community service initiative with the goal of engaging members to participate in activities that benefit the community through fundraising or volunteering of time.

o your fellow members, who are instrumental in PCA National PARADE, made a real spectacle of themselves this year at French Lick and in the process of having so much fun brought home a bunch of awards! No spoiler alert here though. Just a note to check out the great article in this month’s Patter with many thanks to our wonderful membership co-chair Minta Miller for sharing the good news with us all!

When even a simple drive around town is an adventure, it’s such a pleasure to report that the last two months have also been graced with tech sessions and socials, Parade and our own (and just completed) annual Crab Feast! Our committee chairs, Region members, and Board executives, both long-serving and new, are extra busy at keeping the Region active and healthy. It’s my honor to be able to serve with them and I thank all of you for the tremendous effort and time you put into our Region’s wellbeing. But the year is far from over folks! We have plenty of activities planned both for the Region and those which we are supporting at the Zone and National levels. As you’ve already seen in my e-blasts, early August will see a combined Region TOUR and SOCIAL to DeJor Vineyards with daylong events planned for those who attend.

This will be a unique opportunity to spend some quality time with a man who has had a unique experience with Porsche and who is coming to Challenge to share it with all of us. AUTO-X continues to vex us all with challenging courses each month and our TECH crew is always finding new ways for us to learn more about our cars with visits to specialty shops in our area. And with all of that, we are working to bring a few new events later this fall. So stay tuned and on the lookout for additional announcements. And if you still have more time to fill, this year we have some very special events. Zone 2 is hosting a Porsche Car Corral at VIR’s Oak Tree Grand Prix Tudor Race in August. This is your best chance to see the Porsche factory teams racing the #911 and #912 GT3 RSRs in the United Sports Car Championship! Also in September will be RENNSPORT REUNION V hosted by PCNA. It’s a bit of a throw to Leguna Seca in Monterey CA, but worth every second as there will be more Porsches present than one might ever imagine seeing at a single time. And finally we have WERKS Reunion in mid-August, also in Monterey and held during ‘Monterey Car Week’.

Each of these events welcomes volunteers with open arms and generally makes some extra goodies available to those who step up. So there’s plenty to do, see and experience this summer as we make our way into fall! Get out and enjoy your cars, be safe and, most of all, have fun!! Autocross Report PCACHS Autoc PCA AUTOCROSS EVENT No. 4

he morning of Autocross #4, it looked like we were going to be able to sneak another event in before the inclement weather arrived. Forecast called for scattered afternoon thundershowers and clouds were way off on the horizon – nothing to worry about …..right? Fifty-three drivers came out to try their hand at another one of Greg Martell’s masterfully laid out courses – which could be best described as a wild course of crazy and lazy eights. Knowing that weather was going to be a factor later in the event and everybody was on hand and ready to go (thanks to everyone who pre-registers), we were able to get the first car off a little early – a good thing too, because as we were halfway through the second run of the first run group the rain began to fall. As it has been in previous ‘wet’ events, times got better because drivers tend to drive more smoothly on wet pavement. Shortly after the heavy rain

started coming down, then there were reports of lightning in the area, which then forced event autocross officials to call an audible put the event on hold. As a matter of policy autocross events are not delayed or cancelled for rain, they are only delayed or cancelled for lightning (for obvious safety reasons). The weather hold lasted for about an hour while many drivers sat in their cars and others huddled under canopies near the timing trailer. As time dragged on, Scott Borden succumbed to his caffeine cravings and went on a mission of mercy and returned with coffee and donuts for the masses. DJ Vu rocked the iPod of steel, mixing up a rain-themed soundtrack while drivers dunked donuts and dodged raindrops. Unfortunately several racers could not wait for lightning to leave the area and left early. So just as the rains came, the rains left and the event was back on. It was a bad day for the remaining Porsche crowd, ‘Non-Porsche’ dominated the top five positions.

Time of the Day makes up a predominant percentage of our autocross events, there is a component that centers around people learning how to drive their cars (preferably Porsches) in a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;performance-typeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; event and the enjoyment that first-timers get at successfully completing the course and seeing their times displayed in 3

Where Are The Cones! lights. If you are thinking about coming to join in the fun, please keep in mind that we are using motorsportsreg.com for event registration. Registration ends at midnight on the Wednesday prior to the event. Please help us speed up the check in and registration process on event day and preregister. If you have difficulties creating an account or have questions with classification of your car, please do not hesitate to contact us at autocross@pcachs.org. As we enter into the depths of the summer month, we need to be careful about heat related injuries. Limited drinking water is on hand, so we recommend you bring additional water to ensure you’re taken care of. Headgear, eyewear and sunscreen are also items you should bring along in your track bag – we’re on an open lot with little shade so the sun can be brutal out there! There are plenty of areas

for spectators to safely watch the cars during competition, but for their added safety (and to please the PCA legal eagles), please remind anybody who comes with you to the event to check in at the registration/timing table/trailer to sign an insurance waiver release form and get a really cool, fashionable, sexy wristband (suitable for framing). Also, if you must bring a pet it must be on a leash at all times. Remember that the sound levels that many of the cars produce may be distressing to them! Yes, autocross is one of those ‘single-player sports’, but you don’t have to have a stable of Porsches in order to share the experience with friends and family. Co-drivers are a common and cost effective way to see who will have bragging rights at the dinner table/water cooler. And just because it’s a Porsche Club event, that doesn’t 14 mean that cars manufactured by more common

he PCA-Chesapeake Concours Committee is pleased to announce an upcoming session on Concours judging. If you’re interested in having you car judged at a Concours car show, or if you would like to be a judge, this is the school for you to attend. We hope you will be able to join us.

Background -- A Concours is a car show, during which the cars are examined by a team of judges. The cars are typically displayed by category and trophies are awarded to the highest scores. There are different levels or types of Concours. The classifications are designed to accommodate various levels of commitment, car usage, age, and originality. Beginners can enter their daily driver and learn a great deal about the history of that model and year, while making it gleam. For those who want to take it a little more seriously there are categories in which the originality of the car is considered, as well as every tiny nook and cranny of the engine compartment and undercarriage.

The W Porsche Parade 2015 Winners - Chesapeake Region Welcome Party Costume Contest: 1960’s Theme

hat a great way to start Parade!! Despite the weather causing the party to be in a parking garage, Chesapeake knew how to get the party started! First off, we all

tried to sit at the same tables in close proximity to one another. After some music, dinner and recognitions of past Parade and PCA presidents, some of us competed in the costume contest. The best part, Chesapeake Region showed up in FORCE!! Not only were all 4 women’s finalists (Ellen Beck, Linda Gordon, Donna Brandt, Minta Miller)from Chesapeake, but so were the 2 men’s finalists (Steve Wood and Aaron Miller), and the 2 finalist couples (Steve and Joan Wood, Aaron and Minta Miller)! Chesapeake cheered the region on until we were hoarse! The Judge, Mark Shevitz, was so blown away by the finalists all being from the same region, he commented “ Are you

Concours d'Elegance Competition was stiff this year as many fine cars competed. Again, weather was against us and the entire concours was held in a series of parking garages. Donna Brandt and Warren Schultz took home 2nd in their class with their 993 C4S. Not an easy feat by any means. Donna and Warren arrived at Parade Early on Friday and worked endlessly and tirelessly until the Concours on Monday.

Tech Quiz This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tech quiz was universally regarded as one of the most difficult in recent memory. r A Facelift cellent. We purchased a new front bumper from Porsche Annapolis, our local dealership, but the driving lights, light trim and bumperettes were sourced from ebay UK over about six months. If we had purchased new, the lights, trim and bumperettes would have cost over $500! I can see why more people don’t go for the euro bumper conversion. A quick trip to a local body shop had our front and rear bumpers painted in LM3A Guards Red and we had them mounted in a little over an hour. The results were breathtaking, Red Sonja looked just a little more sporty and unique to us. On a side note, the US-spec engine bay wiring harness does not have a provision for the European driving lights. The early (83-85) 944s featured

mounted, I was learning a hard lesson in the meaning of “good” used parts. We had previously parted out a derelict 944 S2 and carefully cleaned and packed all of the parts away for future use. Red Sonja had already shown her radiator wasn’t up to the task of keeping coolant inside the cooling system so rather than spend $375 for a new radiator, we decided to go with our “good” used one. The swap is an easy one and in the course of about 5 hours, old was replaced with new. A few quick pumps on our cooling system tester showed the “new” radiator was also leaking from the side caps! Bizarrely, Red Sonja had an “early” style water pump devoid of the later timing belt guide so for peace of mind, it had to go. On to Amazon

It’s not a fun job to do twice to replace something the second go-round. With Red Sonja now mechanically sound and aesthetically pleasing, a target of opportunity arose giving us the chance to improve handling for pennies on the dollar. A friend from Potomac region had upgraded his 944 Turbo to the impressively stiff Weltmeister sway bars and now had a set of sway bars taking up room in his garage. A short trip to Virginia netted us a front sway bar from a 944 Turbo S and a rear sway bar from a M030-equipped 968, still with excellent condition bushings. Swapping sway bars is as easy as click-

New water pump and freshly zinc’d hardware instills confidence parts with my freshly re-zinc’d spares. I love the look of fresh yellow zinc! Thankfully, the engine and cooling system went back together without fanfare and our leak problems were cured. On the trip home I had noticed I was losing oil at an alarming rate from the crankshaft seal and kicked myself hard for not making a point of replacing the seal prior to the drive home. With Red Sonja laid up waiting on a radiator, I resolved to do all of the front-end maintenance in one fell swoop. Gaining access to the crankshaft and balance shaft seals made me feel like an idiot for not anticipating the dry Utah climate would have wrought havoc on the seals and as I removed them, they were hard as rocks and past their replace

And while the previous owner had installed brand new tires on Red Sonja shortly before our purchase they left quite a bit to be desired in the handling department. We didn’t find out how slippery the tires were until Chesapeake’s first autocross on April 25th. Darrell Pope’s similarly equipped 944 with sticky Hankook Ventus V3 tires easily turned in times 2-3 seconds faster than Red Sonja. And in the interest of ego, I’m going to squarely place the blame on the cheap all-season tires!

Red Sonja also made her concours debut with the Central Pennsylvania PCA region at this year’s Hershey Swap Meet. Minta and I look forward to this event every

year and it marks the beginning of our driving season. We took the opportunity to give Red Sonja her first real scrub down and I’m still a little shocked at how much Utah dust was everywhere! The weather cooperated and we had a bright, sunny and warm swap meet. We located a few parts for Red Sonja and some great factory literature, including a new old stock 1992 warranty manual for our 968! While there were a ton of beautiful 944s at Hershey this year, we were the only car sporting euro bumpers.

ar Fact of Life - If you drive your car you will eventually get some chips in your paint! Some of you have tried to eliminate chips with transparent films

have the film, we end up with chips. In addition to paint chips those of you with more ambitious goals might want to repaint one of your bumpers, a wheel well, wheel well edges, engine compartment or trunk(s) and if you are that ambitious you might like to do it yourself. Not too long ago this would have required an air compressor and spray gun however today you can buy all Porsche colors in an aerosol spray can! In the process of converting a Porsche 914/6 vintage race car to street configuration it was necessary to do some body work. The race 32

l Spray Can Paint car had a secondary oil cooler in the front of the car which had required a large hole in the front of the car and another in the front trunk. Since I couldn’t find a new 914 front body panel, I was able to obtain the sections I needed from a fellow 914World forum member and the bottom panel from a Panorama and Excellence advertiser – Restoration Design. Ron Yeager of Ron’s Rods did a great job of blending in the replacement panels but Ron doesn’t do paint work. As an aside, Ron has hosted a Tech Session on metal work and several Chesapeake members have had Rod work on their cars. Since the 914/6 front panel would be covered by a bumper and valance I thought I would attempt to paint the area using a product offered by another Panorama and Excellence advertiser – AutomotiveTouchUp. They have become the nation’s leading provider

of specialty automotive aerosol spray paint cans, touch up bottles, pens and more with over 60,000 original OEM colors available. I was curious as to see how their aerosol spray can product would work. Their aerosol spray product is two-part paint so one buys a can of the color basecoat and a can of clear coat. As with any painting job, preparation is everything so to ensure a nice finish one should follow typical sanding, cleaning, priming, tack cloth, ventilation, and face mask protection. Use of the spray cans is the same as using any other spray can – easy! After applying primer I sprayed on 3-4 coats of color basecoat followed by several coats of clear. I wouldn’t spray a whole car with the stuff but for minor repairs or for any areas on your car that doesn’t need to be perfect, I would highly recommend the AutomotiveTouchUp products. ***

Porsche Pajun Coming to Frankfur

n electrified concept for the rumored baby Porsche Panamera is coming to the Frankfurt auto show, a new report suggests. The Porsche "Pajun" EV (Panamera Junior) will feature an electric motor, according to French website Lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Automobile. More on Motortrend.com: Although Porsche prefers hybrid powertrains to full EVs, the brand has built a few prototypes based on the previous Boxster, according to the report. The concept will feature a hatchback body style similar to the Panamera, though on a shorter platform. Though the baby Panamera will debut as a concept, Lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Automobile says it could make it to series production. The production model, which is rumored to arrive in 2018, will feature regular gas, hybrid, and pure electric powertrains. In an earlier report, we said the Pajun could feature a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter V-6 gas engine as well as a turbo version and a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 engine sourced from Audi. The electric powertrain will be shared with the similarly sized, recently confirmed Audi Q6 EV, which is said to provide just over a 300-mile range. Despite its sedan/hatchback body style, the Pajun will share its underpinnings with the Audi SUV. ***

2016 Porsche 911 Carrera Sp

orscheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current 991-series 911 sports car is about to undergo its mid-cycle update, with the updated version, the 991.2, on track for a debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show this September. However, the latest prototypes currently testing around Europe are no longer wearing any camouflage gear,

At the rear we can see some new intakes at the sides of the bumper, and the exhaust tips have also been moved closer to the center of the bumper instead of at the outer edges. Though it’s yet to be officially announced, new engines are expected as part of this update, with most 911 variants to feature turbocharging—including the base Carrera models. GT models like the GT3 and GT3 RS are expected to remain naturally aspirated for the foreseeable future, however. The Carrera is expected to feature a turbocharged flat-six engine displacing 2.9 liters while the Carrera S is thought to be receiving a turbocharged version of the newly developed 3.8-liter flat-six found in the latest GT3 RS. It’s not clear what effect the turbocharging of the base models will have on the actual Turbo variant but it’s likely output will be dialed up higher than the current model’s 520-hp rating. Considering Porsche is testing the cars without any camouflage, an official online reveal can’t be far. The Frankfurt Auto Show debut will take place September 17. It is that rarest of racecars in that it has taken me to the podium quite a few times and, yet, it has never been wrecked. This car spent the first four years four or five years as a street car and then became a car that I drove 99% on the track. It is technically street legal since it's tagged and titled. I've actually been stopped/been given warnings by two police officers, and neither of them cited me for the loud exhaust, roll cage, etc. Lucky, I suppose.
