One of the most respected leaders of modern times, Nelson Mandela inspired generations of politicians, thinkers and ordinary people throughout the world. Imprisoned in 1962, the legendary figure remained behind bars for twenty-seven years. After a global campaign secured his release in 1990, he forged a political career that would see the abolition of apartheid in South Africa as he became the country’s first black president. Following his presidency, he dedicated his life to tackling poverty and inequality and fostering racial reconciliation.

EINSTEIN

Pioneer of the world’s most famous equation, E=mc², and originator of the very look of the ‘mad’ scientist, Albert Einstein’s work transcended physics to change the way we view the universe. Without his revolutionary work in relativity and quantum physics, our knowledge of the cosmos at both the micro- and macro-levels might lag decades behind where it is today.

If, by the time Achilles reaches where the tortoise is, the cunn ing reptile must have always moved on ahead, how can the faste r competitor ever win? This ancient Gree k paradox, along with famous thought experiments that include Putnam’s Twin Eart h, the Ship of Thes eus, Descartes’ Evil Gen ius and Galileo’s Balls, have assisted grea t philosophers and scientists in mak ing pivotal discoverie s about life and the universe, from infin ity to relativity, grav ity to time travel, free will to determinism, uncertainty to reali ty. By questioning prec onceived notions in hypothetical scen arios and obscure realities, thought experime nts have enabled huge leaps in philosoph y and science that may never have occu rred in the real wor ld of practical experime ntation and rese arch.

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was born in 1874, the oldest son of Lord Randolph Churchill and his American wife. As a junior officer he fought in four campaigns; as a war correspondent in South Africa he made an epic escape from Boer captivity; in politics he held numerous ministerial posts and, from the back benches in the 1930s, increasingly warned of the dangers of German rearmament, of appeasement, and of Britain’s unreadiness for war. In May 1940 he succeeded Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister. His inspiring leadership of the British people, and the war-winning relationships he established with America and the Soviet Union, won him worldwide fame, and he became an overwhelming presence on the international stage. He died in 1965 and, after a magnificent state funeral, was buried in the graveyard of the tiny parish church close to Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, the house in which he had been born. Dominique Enright is a freelance writer and editor. Her other books include The Wicked Wit of Jane Austen, The Wicked Wit of William Shakespeare and The Wicked Wit of Women , as well as collections of the poetry of Wordsworth, Burns, Keats and Kipling. ‘If Hitler invaded Hell, I would at least make a favourable reference to the Devil in the House of Commons.’ Of Labour Party leader Clement Attlee - whom Churchill had once described as ‘A sheep in sheep’s clothing’: ‘He is a modest man with much to be modest about.’

Proposing a toast to the Soviet leader at the Yalta conference in 1945: ‘To Premier Stalin, whose foreign policy manifests a desire for peace.’ Then, in a whispered aside out of the interpreter’s hearing: ‘A piece of Poland, a piece of Czechoslovakia, a piece of Romania . . .’

On being urged by a British diplomat to flatter the Free French leader General de Gaulle (whom he described as looking ‘like a female llama who has just been surprised in her bath’): ‘I’ll kiss him on both cheeks – or if you prefer, on all four.’ To a well-endowed American woman who wished him to know that she had got up at dawn and driven a hundred miles to attend the unveiling of his bust in Richmond, Virginia: ‘Madam, I want you to know that I would happily reciprocate the honour.’ ‘If you give only one book of quotations . . . He was the greatest orator of his day, the greatest leader of the Second World War, the greatest statesman of his age, and the greatest Englishman of the twentieth century, perhaps of all time. The debt owed to Sir Winston Churchill by the free world remains immeasurable.

Yet at the heart of this often intimidating colossus lay a man of vast humanity, enormous wit and boundless humour, much of it mischievous. His most famous speeches and sayings have passed into history and into everyday language, but many of his aphorisms, puns, bons mots, jokes – often at his own or others’ expense – are less well known. This unrivalled collection gathers hundreds of his funniest and wickedest quips in tribute to the exhilarating wit of this great-hearted, infuriatingly conceited, wildly funny, and brilliantly talented Englishman.

dolls – including teddy bears and South Park figurines – were planted in the snow in the Siberian city of Barnaul, as substitute protesters. The toys carried slogans like ‘I’m for clean elections’ and ‘A thief should sit in jail, not in the Kremlin.’ On the face of it, the miniature dolls could hardly have been less threatening. But the authorities reckoned they represented an ‘unsanctioned public event’ – and also noted that the toys were ‘not citizens of Russia’ (‘especially the imported toys’) which meant that the toys’ protest was banned. Police scrupulously recorded the dangerous slogans in their notebooks. The police action – ahead of presidential elections in 2012 – was duly uploaded to YouTube, where Russians could laugh at the official paranoia. In the words of protest organizer Lyudmila Alexandrova, ‘We wanted to show the absurdity and farce of officials’ struggle with their own people.’

Vladimir Putin worked for many years with the KGB, the Soviet secret police. In 1999, he became Russian prime minister. In 2000 and again in 2004, he became president for the maximum permitted two terms. In 2008 – unable to stand for the presidency – he went back to being prime minister again. Finally, in 2011, he suddenly announced he wanted to be president for an unprecedented third term, under an imaginative re-interpretation of the electoral rules. For many Russians, this was the last straw, especially when there was documented evidence of vote-stuffing in the parliamentary elections that year. In Moscow, tens of thousands of protesters linked hands to encircle the city, wearing the white ribbons that became a national symbol of change. Many were arrested. It turned out that the Russian authorities were not just afraid of people. Toys proved politically scary, too. An assortment of

THE MODERN ART ACTIVITY BOOK

Draw, Colour and Paint Your Way Through Art History ASHLEY LE QUERE

Impressionist to colouring like a Cubist, each movement is accompanied by a fun activity to get the creative juices flowing

79

 Includes a stunning fold-out timeline

Impressionism The invention of portable easels and paint that came in tubes meant the Impressionists, unlike artists who came before them, could paint just about anywhere.

Not only did the Impressionists change WHERE they painted, they also changed HOW they painted. Unlike artists working in a studio,

They could set up outside a café and paint people having lunch, or next to a river and capture landscapes, scenes from everyday life and the way the sunlight filtered through trees.

Impressionists needed to work fast. Instead of trying to capture every detail of a scene, they would instead capture an ‘impression’ of it.

Claude Monet used blobs of paint to give the ‘impression’ of light flitting accross the surface of the lily pond in his garden.

ASHLEY LE QUERE is a London-based surface pattern designer and illustrator, specialising in handmade patterns and screen printing. She enjoys experimenting with colour and texture, creating all of her illustrations by hand.

EXCITING NEW TITLES 100 DIGGER

PARROT

digger

parrot

The digger, or JCB®, is the king of the building site. When a shovel just won’t cut it, they’re brought in to dig huge holes. Created by, and named after the company’s founder, Joseph Cyril Bamford, they have been shovelling dirt since 1948. Our JCB is bright yellow, just like all the machines produced by JCB since 1951. While there are more than 150 models, we’ve chosen to recreate a combination backhoe and loader. The bucket at the front is created by using two upturned chair pieces.

These brightly coloured birds are found in most tropical and subtropical regions and have curved bills, strong legs and clawed feet. Most parrots are vegetarian, living off a diet of seeds, nuts, fruits and other plants. They are among the most intelligent birds on Earth, and domesticated parrots are known for repeating what their owners say. LEGO®’s blue and yellow are the perfect colours for our parrot.
