Dear readers, W
elcome to the Spring/Summer edition of SaundersBest, a selection of exceptional homes and stories from across the Gulf Coast. Entering a new decade brings both reflection and hope. At Michael Saunders & Company, we are in awe at how our beloved Gulf Coast bounced back from The Great Recession and continued to evolve into a diverse cultural playground. Today’s amenities and attractions were mere aspirations of the dreamers who have helped mold our dynamic community, and it’s thrilling to think of the growth we’ll see in the years ahead. In this edition, we’re exploring the world outside our front door – whether it’s the array of recreation available on land or sea or far beyond our coastline to examine the international buyer discovering our region. We also pay tribute to the high-performance venues that allow world-class athletes to train year round and the breakfast
spots we’d highly recommend to fuel their dreams in our latest “Six to Savor.” Our featured property is a true reflection of the Southwest Florida lifestyle. Sited on breathtaking Point Crisp with infinite Bayfront splendor to greet you each morning and lull you to complete relaxation, its 1.2 acres is only an introduction to an interior brimming with elegant coastal finishes. From Bradenton to Boca Grande, our communities invigorate the senses, rejuvenate the spirit and inspire a connection to people and place. We hope you have the opportunity to experience them all this season. There is no shortage of adventure and no better place to call home. Nowhere but here.

You can have it all
“Sarasota offered everything we were looking for: the arts, restaurants, the beach, shopping on St. Armands Circle, the marina. And everyone just seemed to be happy all the time.” The lure of Longboat
“We always wanted to live in Sarasota because living in Europe for four years made us appreciate being within walking distance to shops, restaurants and theaters. But we loved driving down Longboat Key and seeing everyone biking, walking, jogging or going to the beach. It looked like paradise. Country Club Shores is still close to downtown and all the things we like to do. Knowing we would be here year-round, we wanted to be a part of a neighborhood—and we are.” Outdoor appeal
Jimmy and Nancy Riyad.
“I wanted a home with outdoor living space that’s great for entertaining, especially when our sons visit from New Jersey. We have a beautiful view of the bay from our bedroom and floor-to-ceiling sliding doors all around the pool and lanai. We watch the sunset with a glass of wine or have a coffee in the morning looking at the bay. It never gets old.” The beach is our playground
My new hometown
“We walk on the beach and swim, and I run on the beach almost every morning. I see the sunrise and pelicans and great blue herons fishing for their breakfast. The beach is my personal fitness center—with no annual fee.”

New Jerseyites Nancy and Jimmy Riyad accepted an invitation from cousins to visit Sarasota 15 years ago, and “it was love at first sight,” says Nancy. After enjoying a vacation apartment in downtown Sarasota, they moved here fulltime in 2017 and bought a canal-front home in Country Club Shores. “It was harder leaving each year to go back to New Jersey,” says Nancy, a banker with UBS who works from home; Jimmy is retired from the medical industry. “We could see ourselves living here, not just vacationing.”
We’re connecting with culture
“In New Jersey, we enjoyed going into New York City to see cultural events, and we didn’t want to give that up. We absolutely love the ballet, opera, the Van Wezel and Burns Court Cinema. Next for me is to start getting involved in the human service organizations.” M I CHA ELS AU N DER S.CO M

Everything feels French at this bustling downtown Sarasota café. Cosmopolitanlooking diners sip café au lait at the sidewalk tables; brisk servers with Gallic accents deliver quivering quiches, mushroom-stuffed crêpes and perfect omelets, with a side of salade, of course; and the Great Masters of France’s pastry art in the display cases inspire awe and longing. Fresh fish and eggs? Totally, when you’re overlooking the Gulf of Mexico on beautiful Anna Maria Island from a pretty outdoor patio. Or savor your seafood in a Coastal Quiche, with scallops, shrimp and crab. The corned beef hash is also a winner, and regulars swear by the buttermilk pancakes. Honestly, with views like this, it almost doesn’t matter what you eat. gulfdrivetiki.com
With two Bradenton locations, Sage Biscuit Café has built a fervid following for its fresh, creative menu. You may wait for a table, but it’s worth it. Vegans will find appealing bowls; carnivores go crazy for the jalapẽno bacon. Look down as you fly along the coast from Bradenton to Boca Grande and you’ll see a landscape surrounded by and laced with sparkling blue waters. From the vast Gulf of Mexico to bays, inlets, canals, lakes and winding rivers, our waterways nurture wildlife, boast glorious views and provide a year-round playground for residents and visitors. You can paddleboard, kayak, parasail, cruise, canoe, fish, sail or row; compete in beach runs or dive for fossils; hike along a wild river or just settle in for a sunset on a secluded beach. We scouted out a sampling of water adventures to start you off.
Your gondola awaits
You don’t have to travel to Venice, Italy, for a romantic gondola ride. Just board Boris Tsatskin’s boat with the curving bow next to Phillippi Creek Restaurant and enjoy an Italian serenade as he propels you through the surrounding canals. Tstaskin, a former member of the Soviet Union’s Olympic rowing team, wanted to start a water-based business when he moved here. “There was so much competition from motorboats, and I wanted something romantic,” he says. So he built his own gondola, developed a repertoire of Italian love songs, and launched Sarasota Gondola. Passengers often bring along a picnic basket and libations. Along with pretty backyard vistas, they see fish, wild birds and manatees. “People who have lived here all their lives tell me they had no idea Phillippi Creek is so beautiful,” he says. The gondola has become Sarasota’s unofficial love boat. Tstaskin is swamped throughout Valentine’s week, and says people propose on board all year round. He even got his notary license and marries couples on board. sarasotagondola.com 12
Music and literature on the beach at the Hermitage Artist Retreat.
Culture on the sand
Accomplished artists, including Pulitzer Prize winners, MacArthur “Geniuses” and Grammy, Tony and Emmy winners, are invited to stay at the Hermitage Artist Retreat on Manasota Key, where they create new works in a charming collection of Old Florida cottages on the Gulf. Some of those works will end up reaching worldwide audiences, and you can get an intimate preview during the Hermitage’s free Friday series, Art on the Water’s Edge. About an hour before sunset, people arrive with beach chairs and beverages. While the sinking sun paints the sky with technicolor hues, a Hermitage artist makes a presentation. Some gatherings are small; others attract a large audience. “We’ve had more than 500 people listening to a string quartet; the U.S. Poet Laureate read on our beach to 350 people,” says events director Patricia Caswell. Peaceful Snook Haven.
Down a wild river
Drive along Southwest Florida’s bustling coastline and you’d never dream that just half an hour away, thousands of acres of wild Florida still exist. One of the easiest—and most relaxing—ways to venture into this untamed world is aboard a Logan River pontoon boat at Snook Haven. Arrive early enough for some barbecue under the shady oaks—if you’re lucky, there will be live bluegrass on the outdoor stage—then set off on an hour-long journey down the Myakka River. On a recent ride, our knowledgeable guide, Keith Logan, pointed out sunning turtles and alligators, an osprey eating a fish, great blue herons and much more. But the pristine, primeval river was the star of the show. It wound through a tangled jungle of stately oaks, flowering trees and palms, some toppled into the water by epic storms. Narrow creeks occasionally branched off into the jungle, and we could picture prehistoric people paddling down those dark tunnels. loganrivertours.com
Kayak through a quiet preserve
The Robinson Preserve.
Before a two-hour guided tour of the tidal marshes, bayous and mangrove tunnels of Manatee County’s Robinson Preserve, Kayak Jack’s Jack Glennon starts off with a quick lesson in kayaking basics, which he promises anyone can master, especially on the park’s quiet waters. He keeps groups small, usually four to 12 people in single and tandem kayaks or on paddleboards. You’re likely to see herons, egrets, roseate spoonbills and even bald eagles, along with oyster beds and a variety of marine creatures, including the occasional mullet that jumps into the boat. You can stretch your legs at a stop to climb an observation tower that offers panoramic views. Save some time to explore more of the 662-acre park, which has miles of secluded hiking and biking trails, made even more tranquil by the park’s “no motors” rule. kayak-jacks.com M I CHA ELS AU N DER S.CO M

Work out on the beach
Why go to the gym when you can go to the beach? That philosophy has sparked a flurry of exercise classes set right on our sandy shore. Up and down the coast, yoga, Tai Chi and other workouts come with sweeping water views and sea breezes charged with healing hydrogen ions. For sheer fun, nothing beats the Peace, Love and Hoopiness classes Heather Kirkendall teaches on Nokomis Beach. Students work out with hula hoops—not the plastic ones you may have struggled with as a kid, but adult models that Kirkendall says produce “a 99.9 success rate.” While spinning their hoops, they dance, do squats and other moves, fueled by the energizing playlists Kirkendall creates for every class. Her regulars swear by the results; what’s more, says one, “I never want to miss a class.” And because there’s a spacious pavilion at Nokomis Beach, classes go on rain or shine. peaceloveandhoopiness.com. Above, hula hooping on Nokomis Beach; right, a turtle walk on Longboat Key; bottom, chasing tarpon
Catch the silver king
For many anglers, landing a tarpon is the ultimate achievement. The powerful, agile “silver kings” can grow eight feet long and weigh 350 pounds and are famously difficult to catch. But every summer, thousands of migrating tarpon cluster in deep, narrow Boca Grande Pass, attracted by a rich supply of fish and blue crabs. Their presence has won the tiny resort town of Boca Grande the title of “Tarpon Capital of the World.” Tarpon migrate through our waters from late spring until early fall, but the peak fishing season in Boca Grande is in June, when armadas of fishing boats crowd the narrow pass. Among them are seasoned—and well-heeled— sportsmen who come from across the country to compete in The World’s Richest Fishing Tournament. Learn more at bocagrandechamber.com.

Protect sea turtles
One of the great wonders of the natural world are the massive sea turtles that swim hundreds—even thousands—of miles to return to the beaches where they were born to lay their eggs. From May to October, 300-pound, three-footlong loggerhead turtles lumber out of the Gulf of Mexico in the dark of night and dig nests in the sand, laying more than 100 ping-pong-ball sized eggs. The eggs must incubate for several months, and if the nests are not protected, many eggs will be destroyed before they can hatch. You can get a first-hand view of the nests and learn more about these ancient reptiles and other marine creatures on early-morning Turtle Walks during nesting season. Conducted by Longboat Key Turtle Watch in conjunction with Mote Marine Laboratory, the walks are led by Mote experts. The group sets off at 6:45 a.m., looking for nests and marking them with yellow stakes and flagging tape. lbkturtlewatch.org
LIQUID ASSET For many, living on the water is the ultimate dream. The consistently most popular locales for well-to-do newcomers are our barrier islands: Anna Maria Island, Boca Grande, Casey Key, Siesta Key, Longboat Key and more. But in Southwest Florida, waterfront property can mean many different things, from a rustic cabin on a river to a grand Gulf-front mansion. All types of waterways come with a view, but each has different advantages—and price tags. What’s the right choice for you? Gulf-front. The ultimate in prime real estate, Gulf-front homes enjoy spectacular, sweeping views—including the nightly sunset show—and a private stretch of white sandy beach. No wonder they make great vacation gathering spots for friends and family. From $300,000-$19 million. Bayfront. You’ll also get wonderful water views from a home on the bay, and you’re likely to see more activity than you would on the Gulf—a plus for many buyers. Bay waters are also more protected. And if you’re lucky, your home will come with a dock and boat lift. From $400,000s-$10 million
Learn to row
In the last decade, Southwest Florida has become famous not only for its natural bodies of water, but for a manmade 400-acre lake. The centerpiece of Sarasota’s Nathan Benderson Park, which boasts state-of-the-art rowing amenities, the lake is the battlefield of champions during national and international rowing competitions. But it’s also became popular with amateur rowers, who have discovered that rowing, either alone or with others, is an addictive exercise. In the park’s learn-to-row classes, students—who have ranged from ages 7 to 75—get eight hours of instruction in single sculls over four days. Although the first day can seem daunting, says programs manager Megan Ferrel, by the second or third day, “People start to get the hang of it, and it becomes a natural motion.” People fall in love with rowing, she says, not only because it’s a great lowimpact exercise (especially appealing to seniors), but also because it requires such coordination between the rower, the boat and the water that it takes you out of your head and into a meditative space. And rowers also enjoy phenomenal views of nature. nathanbendersonpark.org.

Canal-front. Pretty canals wind through many Southwest Florida neighborhoods, offering recreational opportunities to boaters and access to larger waterways. From $200,000s$4 million. Lakes. The region has lots of natural and manmade lakes, both large and small. They provide serene views and often serve as a natural oasis in newer communities out east, attracting deer, birds and other wildlife. From $200,000-$4 million. Rivers. Scenic rivers in rustic and pastoral communities provide an OldFlorida flavor and a habitat for wildlife. They’re also great for fishing, paddling or bird-watching. From $200,000$3 million. sports thrive in Southwest Florida all year long. Much of the credit goes to our temperate climate. After all, wouldn’t you rather be jogging on a sugarwhite sand beach in February than shoveling snow? Our demographics also play a role. The region attracts health-conscious retirees with time and energy along with young professionals and families who enjoy everything from paddleboarding and triathlons to kids’ sports leagues. Whatever their age, people who live here love to move. Check out the parade of walkers and runners crossing the Ringling Bridge between downtown Sarasota and Bird Key at sunrise and sunset. Or the tennis players who take to the area’s hundreds of public and private courts, and the bicyclists who zip up and down Longboat Key and along the Legacy Trail. The Legacy Trail, a paved former railroad track that runs northward 11 miles from Venice, is slated to be extended all the way to downtown Sarasota in the next couple of years. That’s great news for the estimated 225,000 people who enjoyed at least some part of the publicly owned trail last year alone.

he region has plenty of other top-rate facilities and fields, including Bradenton’s famous IMG Academy. One of the biggest drivers of the region’s rising reputation for world-class athletics, the academy brings elite young student athletes from all over the world to its sprawling 600-acre West Bradenton campus for rigorous training in a wide variety of sports— soccer, football, baseball, basketball, golf, lacrosse and track and field. IMG opens its doors to the public for many tournaments, including the Eddie Herr International Junior Championship in November, where you can spot future champions as you cheer on more than 2,000 bestof-the-best junior tennis players from over 90 countries; and the IMG Cup College Showcase in late February, when Under 13- to Under 19-year-old soccer players from around the world compete in front of top college coaches. You can even train like the pros in tennis, golf and performance with top-notch coaches at an IMG Academy adult camp. game, appointing sports commissions that draw athletes and fans from all over for national and even international sports events. In Sarasota alone, says Shelby Connett, director of sports for Visit Sarasota, some 89,000 out-oftown athletes and fans participated in such events in 2019; plenty of locals also turn out. What makes the region such a popular sporting event destination? Balmy weather, of course, but also “the caliber and quality of our venues,” says Connett. “Many stand out in the state and some in the entire United States.” And since athletes and their supporters often view out-of-town tournaments as mini vacations, they appreciate the region’s many activities and amenities, from great restaurants and cultural facilities to our famous white-sand beaches. Some of the highest-profile competitions take place at Nathan Benderson Park, which straddles Sarasota and Manatee counties just west of I-75. The park’s 400-acre lake is the only Class A FISA-certified rowing course in North America. NBP opened with a splash in 2017 when it hosted the World Rowing Championships. It’s hosted many other important competitions since then, including last June’s USRowing Youth National Championships, with 1,500 elite high school rowers from across the country, and July’s World Rowing Under 23 Championships, which had taken place the year before in Poland. In another big win, NBP has been selected as the site for the 2020 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic rowing team trials. Lacrosse is gaining ground here, too. some 250 amateur players originally from 46 countries. The club owns its own five-acre field off University Parkway in Lakewood Ranch. Its annual Six-A-Side Festival over Thanksgiving weekend draws teams from as far away as Australia and South Africa. Also in Lakewood Ranch, the meticulously groomed fields of the Sarasota Polo Club host fast-paced Sunday afternoon matches between professional teams from midDecember through April. Spectators are encouraged to tailgate in style. If you’re so inspired, you can enroll in the club’s 10-week polo school, where you’ll learn basic horsemanship, rules of the game and more. Once you’re sufficiently comfortable, you can participate in amateur league play. Golf is perhaps considered the quintessential Florida sport, and more than 100 public and private golf courses can be found in our region. For golf enthusiasts who can’t get enough of the game, two major tours visit our area. The LECOM Suncoast Classic, where professional golfers compete for a chance to join the PGA Tour, comes to Lakewood National Golf Club in February. And the LPGA Symetra Tour SkyiGolf Tournament, part of the official qualifying tour of the LPGA, makes a stop at Charlotte Harbor National Golf Club in North Port each March. And about Major League spring training: South Sarasota County hit a grand slam last year when it became home to Florida’s newest spring training park, the Atlanta Braves’ new CoolToday Park. Located in the West Villages master-planned community between Venice and North Port, the ballpark is expected to draw Braves from across the Southeast—and to create new Braves fans among locals. The Braves join the Pittsburgh Pirates at LECOM Park in Bradenton, the Baltimore Orioles at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota and the Tampa Bay Rays at Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte for Florida Grapefruit League games late February through March.
