ABOUT MAAKAH (MECCA) DEVELOPMENT PROJECT (KAAR) KING ABDUL AZIZ ROAD. Makkah (Mecca) is regarded as the most holy of the relation of Islam. The city is located 70 kilometres inland from Jeddah. It is the primary holy place where Muslim pilgrims come to pay homage to the birthplace of Muhammad and is the site of Muhammad's first revelation of the Quran. It is the fifth pillar of Islam that a Muslim is required to make pilgrimage Hajj at least once in his, or her lifetime. So important is Mecca in the religious practice of Islam that a Muslim must physically face, and do prayer (Salat) in the direction of the Kaaba, in Mecca.

KAAR is a unique urban re‐ generation scheme aimed at providing hotel & residential accommodation, commercial/retail spaces, car parking, public spaces and public amenities to support religious, social and commercial activities to Hajj and Umrah pilgrims and other visitors and local residents all year round.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Implemented by Umm Al Qura for Development & Construction Company is a diverse mixed-use development project comprising of 200 plots of residential units, serviced apartments and hotels alongside commercial and recreational areas.

The Project covers an area of 1.2 million square meters with a length of 3.6 kilometers and an average width of 320 meters. The expected capacity of the project is estimated at 113,119 residents.

The key urban design issues were aesthetic and strength (longevity) of materials and landscaping, including, clear and well created wayfinding will also be important for providing easy and efficient directions for the many of the local, and foreign visitors.

From May, 2015 to March, 2016, Michael was the senior Landscape Architect on a 3.65 kilometer long redevelopment of the Mecca, extending from the most holiest mosque of Islam: the Majid Al Haram to the third ring road. The project being the largest and most important project in Saudi Arabia.

His responsibilities were to help advise the client, Umm Al Qura, on all aspects of the Atkins concept design, and to ensure all aspects of the masterplan were efficiently and effectively undertaken.

Achievements: Michael provided design advise to assist fine-tune the Atkins concept masterplan design. Daily, Michael would meet with the client and provide input on the proposed layout and design aspects of the urban design including the quality and aesthetics of the future paving, street furniture, soft landscape elements.

Other responsibilities of Michael’s role included undertake regular and a complete photographic site survey of the site, including analysing and becoming acquainted with the Atkins generated detailed CAD infrastructural drawings, to help advise the client on the PM/CM of the project.

In order to assist the KEO infrastructure team with the development, MichaeI undertook a Sketchup modeling, with Lumion rendering, of the proposed development.

This modeling tool aimed to assist them to properly visual this vast project.

Major Achievement: MichaeI proposed and designed at the early phase development of the project, a plant nursery and commercial visitor centre. The objective of this concept design was to propagate trees and plants early on site so the client could achieve consistent growth without disease.

The visitor centre to be used to test the durability of proposed materials including pavers, lights and other street furniture, before the boulevard is constructed.

A simple time line including area and budget was proposed to the Client.

Location: Muscat, Sultanate of Oman In September 2014, after completing a Masters of Landscape Architecture at Deakin University, Michael was invited again to work for KEO International in the role of Senior Urban Planner, he worked as senior project manager based and coordinating with the KEO Infrastructure engineers between September, 2014 – May, 2015

Project Manager – Industrial Planning for the Master Plan development of approximately 250 sq km Industrial land currently managed by the SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE AUTHORITY DUQM (SEZAD).

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Michael successfully managed a team of planners and coordinated with Infrastructure engineers, to produce a Concept Master Plan and detailed report on the strategic “vision” direction of the future design and construction phase until to the year 2045.
