Old McGill YEARBOOK
Old McGill YEARBOOK
2013 VOLUME 116
f0rew0rd Thank you for picking up a copy of Old McGill, the undergraduate yearbook of the Students’ Society of McGill University. This year, we strove to make Old McGill more accessible to students, both in price and size. The yearbook underwent several changes, most notably in length and orientation to a landscape publication. The essence of the undergraduate experience at McGill is rooted in events, student government, campus publications, athletics, and clubs and services. As such, we have focused specifically on those important aspects of student life in the following pages. On the inside back cover you will find a disc with additional pages featuring members of the graduating class. I hope that this yearbook finds a dedicated spot on your bookshelf of coffee table, and that each time you pick it up and read it through the memories you treasure from your time at McGill come to mind. There are several people I would like to thank, and without whom this yearbook would not have been possible. I would like to thank and extend my deepest appreciation to my team of editors, Yoojin and Ivy the dedicated Section Editors and Alice the multi-talented Graphic Designer. We were just a small team of four, but we worked hard (and very quick) and put together a great publication in just one month’s time! I would also like to thank the Arseny Ryazanov, the SSMU photographer, for taking almost all of the photos you will see in this yearbook. From Frosh and Activities Night to 4Floors and the infamous McTavish Flood, his finger was always on the shutter. To the students and graduating class, please enjoy!

dedicati0n t0 0ld mcgill As Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University, it is my great pleasure to write this dedication to Old McGill. I write to congratulate all of you who are graduates of the 2012-2013 academic year on completing your course of study. But I am also writing for posterity, as Old McGill volumes inevitably become lifelong treasures for our graduates. Perhaps more than anything else, the pages of Old McGill document the faces and the events that have shaped your odyssey, from your first days on campus, to convocation. I trust that these will remind you of meaningful and joyous times. To this year’s graduates, my sincere congratulations on reaching this milestone in your lives. It took years of intense work and focused determination to arrive at this point. You have now completed your studies and joined the ranks of over 225,000 living alumni worldwide. If your experience follows that of a majority of McGill’s alumni who have come before you, you will reflect often and happily on your memories of McGill and those with whom you shared your experiences here. To those of you who are graduates looking back on your education and reviewing this volume of Old McGill from later in life, I hope that the early promise of your McGill education in terms of friendships, intellectual engagement and leadership opportunities has, and will continue to be, fulfilled. I am gratified by the high degree of social engagement, intellectual curiosity, and idealism expressed by our McGill students and graduates, and by the contributions to society that you make. You have a long tradition of leadership in the arts, sports, the sciences, business, education, philanthropy and community service, among other areas. I trust that your McGill education has enriched your lives, and I am confident that you are making a difference in your community, and the world. Please continue to stay in touch with the friends you have made while with us. Please continue to stay in touch with your McGill. With my warm regards and every good wish, Professor Heather Munroe-Blum

McGill University S0ng Hail, Alma Mater Hail, Alma Mater, we sing to thy praise;
Great our affection though feeble out lays.
Nestling so peaceful and clam neath the hill. Fondly we love thee our Dear Old McGill. Hail, Alma Mater, we sing to thy praise;
Loud in thy Honour, our voices we raise. Full to thy fortune, our glasses we fill. Life and Prosperity, Dear Old McGill.
Hail, Alma Mater, thy praises we sing:
Far down the centuries, still may they ring.
Long through the ages remain - if God will, Queen of the Colleges, Dear Old McGill. McGill University Song Book (1921)

student g0vernment
Legislative C0uncil SSMU Legislative Council is the primary decision-making body of the Society. Composed of thirty-two undergraduate students, including the six members of the SSMU Executive, each Councillor represents a Faculty or School at McGill University, with larger Faculties receiving more than one seat on Council. This academic year, notable accomplishments by Council include dedicating the name of a room in the building to Madeleine Parent, the purchase of an e-waste collection bin in the lobby, the establishment of possible seats on McGill Senate for students in Nursing, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy, Arts and Science, and Social Work, and the creation of the SSMU Building Committee and Student Advisory Resource Committee. We also saw the implementation of “roaming Council,” an initiative spearheaded by President Josh Redel, which rotated the location of Council meetings from the typical Lev Bukhman room in the William Shatner University Centre to other places on campus, including an interactive classroom in Burnside Hall, the Carrefour Sherbrooke Residence and the Macdonald Campus Students’ Society Building. Thank you to all of the Councillors, the meticulously hard-working recording secretary and SSMU General Manager for their immense dedication! Michael Tong Speaker of Council
general assembly
The SSMU General Assembly is held once each semester and open to all members of the Society. This year saw immense technological innovation at the General Assembly, facilitated by President Redel and the SSMU Secretary-General, including the use of clickers instead of placards to decrease the time to tally votes, the establishment of a “mood watcher,” live-streaming with an online discussion board and screen sharing, and an automated barcode entry system to calculate quorum and faculty distribution. Topics for discussion at the General Assemblies this year include renaming the SSMU Breakout Room, the installation of a bouldering wall in the Shatner building, ethical investments at McGill, support for accessible education, support for indigenous peoples and allies and support for the Social Equity and Diversity Office.

Senate Caucus Senate Caucus is the group of undergraduate student Senators who represent members of the Students’ Society of McGill University on the McGill Senate. Senate is the collegial body of professors, students, staff and administrators which oversees academic activities at the University. This team of students works on a range of projects throughout the year with support from the University Affairs Secretary-General. With members from nearly every faculty we bring together a wide variety of opinions. This year we’ve dealt with a number of issues such as the Provisional Protocol, changes to the Student Code, Budget Cut implications and enquiring about the MUHC-McGill relationship. The student senators have taken lots of initiative by bringing many issues to the attention of Senate and McGill. Moreover, through various faculty specific projects and university committees, the senators have continued to advocate for and help students at every level of McGill. It’s been a very interesting year for University politics - a big thank you and applause to the student senators for a great year and all of their hard work and dedication! This exec has helped to facilitate the growth and development of 9 EUS clubs, and helped support our Design Teams through an unprecedented $270,000 construction project for their space, jointly funded by the EUS, Alumni and the Faculty. A new committee, called the Engineering Tournament Committee, was founded to host min-competitions, and The Ledger, a new publication, was successfully launched. Going forward, we will continue our unwavering commitment to students by initiating a referendum that will create a new emergency EUS fund, towards academic and support staff, to help alleviate the burdens of the impending budget cuts.

The annual Ampersand Conference on Feb. 23rd, Identity 2.0, was an amazing event featuring fantastic speakers who spoke about discovering ourselves in an age of technology. The National Integrative Research Conference, set to take place on March 15th at the time of writing, will bring keynote and student speakers including Prof. Atsuo Takanishi, a world-renowned expert on robotics. In addition, BASiC and Arts & Science Representative to SSMU Victor Lam successfully collaborated with POTUS and NUS members to include smaller programs in the re-allocation of vacant student Senator seats.

The CNSA Regional Conference was organized and hosted by McGill University. Over 50 McGill nursing students attended the CNSA National Conference 2013 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We collaborated with other Faculties to increase diversity on Senate! Bylaws were changed and we now have our first Nursing Senator on the McGill University Senate. Sugar shack, Nursing Sangria Mixer, Interprofessional Apartment Crawl, Nursing Games and many more were note worthy nursing events for 2012-2013!

Publicati0ns
The McGill Daily The McGill Daily, at one time the oldest daily student newspaper in the Commonwealth, has been the training ground for generations of journalists since its inception in 1911. Currently The Daily is one of the largest student newspapers in Canada and is widely read both on the McGill campus and around Montreal. The Daily began as a broadsheet that focused mainly on sports news. Its evolution has taken many directions. It has taken courageous stands over the years, such as publishing a special issue for International Women’s Day in the late 1970s, that were ridiculed at the time but later embraced by the mainstream media. The Daily has been independent from student government since 1980. It is published by the Daily Publications Society, an autonomous body whose membership includes all McGill downtown campus undergraduate students except Continuing Education, as well as all graduate students excluding non-residents, graduate medical and graduate dentistry students.

The McGill Tribune is an editorially autonomous newspaper published by the SociĂŠtĂŠ de Publication de la Tribune, a student society of McGill University. Every week, its staff of 20 editors work hard to reflect and reinforce the community it covers. The Tribune seeks to provide the student body with even-keeled and relevant coverage in the form of news, opinion, science and technology, student living, arts and entertainment, sports, and photography. It has a circulation of 7,000 and publishes once a week on Tuesday.

MonWHO The Montréal World Health Organization Simulation (MonWHO) is an annual global health conference and a transnational initiative under the International Federation of Medical Students. MonWHO’s objective is to provide a national platform to debate about some of the world’s most pressing global health issues, attracting delegates from across Canada to bring together not only students, buts NGOs, and renown healthcare professionals in a fully interactive conference. And every year, the charter our delegates create is sent off directly to the real world health organization. The 2013 theme was “Corruption in the Healthcare System,” covering a pervasive global health issue that affects all countries regardless of economic status. Corruption can take in the form of over-payment for medical services to millions not receiving desperately needed treatment due to theft of medical supplies or distribution of counterfeit drugs.

In November, high school students from across the country travel to our High School Debating Tournament, and of course, every January since 1953, we continue to host Winter Carnival. We have enjoyed another tremendous year of competitive success, with McGill teams reaching elimination rounds at the World Universities Debating Championship and winning the North American Women's Debating Championships, among other notable achievements.

Red Thunder
Visit redthunder.ca for more details.
Red Thunder was formed in 2009 by six students with the goal of increasing the fan-base for McGill athletes. Their hope was to fuel passion for varsity sports and to boost the level of school spirit on campus. In the years since its creation, Red Thunder has evolved and grown. In 2012 Red Thunder joined forces with the McGill Athletics Red & White campaign and together they aim to attract as many students to McGill games as possible. The club has also expanded its objectives to include philanthropic pursuits as Red Thunder has helped support number of organizations in the past year including, but not limited to, McGill Students for Right to Play, STAND McGill, and the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation. As a McGill University student group, membership is available to the entire student body, welcoming not only sports enthusiasts and varsity athletes, but casual fans, those full of school pride, and anyone else who happens to take an interest in our school’s athletic endeavours. Red Thunder membership includes free entry to every single McGill sporting event, a rad t-shirt, concession deals, as well as a spot in the Thunder Family. We are a group of students brought together by sport, despite the club’s diverse membership we all find common ground when we’re cheering for our incredibly talented athletes. GO RED GO!

Heart of the City Piano The Montreal Heart of the City Piano Program went under a fantastic year of expansion in 2012-2013. Over 100 students now participate, and about 80 volunteers have been involved teaching at our schools or on our sub-committees. HCPP started up at a new school, École La Mennais, in September and held musical activity workshops in collaboration with Homework Zone for Community Engagement Day in October. We also held our first ever Winter Festival in December. HCPP has recently become affiliated with the School of Music and the McGill Alumni Association as a Seeds of Change project, which assists in securing donations for the program and has been a fantastic partnership for planning our events and activities. At the time of writing, HCPP’s first Talent Show is upcoming on March 23 and our annual Year-End Recital is set to take place on April 11.

Women in Leadership

McGill Women in Leadership (MWIL) seeks to instill confidence in female students while preparing them for the workforce. Despite our main focus on them, we also encourage male students to join as the professional issues women face and the resulting societal gap affect everyone.
Northshore Society is a group of young people with strong passion and interests in the social progress of China. We would like to engage all the students and scholars from different backgrounds and to cultivate social consciousness and public participation in the Chinese community.
Through a series of guest lectures, trips to leadership conferences, and workshops, members of MWIL will have extensive opportunities to learn, bond, and network with people who can help them with their futures. MWIL aims to inspire and connect young adults who will build our future.
We offer reliable news and readings regularly via social media, and host Politics Tea Party, Workshops, Documentaries and Seminars to foster an open and free environment to discuss current China, with academic theories as a starting point.

The McGill Pre-Law Students’ Society (MPLSS) serves as a point of reference for undergraduate students interested in applying to law school. The MPLSS acts as almost an older sibling to students interested in law, providing them with the advice, resources, and the know-how to be successful applicants. We have had a very proactive year with a Canadian and an American law school forum, multiple workshops on the LSATs and personal statement, talks from prestigious members of the law community, such as Justice Linden and lawyers from prominent law firms in Montreal, as well as wine and cheese mixers with current law students. McGill Quidditch
We are a co-ed athletic club which organizes and promotes the play of “muggle quidditch”, an adapted version of the fictional sport of quidditch, popularized by J.K. Rowling’s famous Harry Potter novels. As an official member of the International Quidditch Association (IQA), a non-for-profit organization which standardizes, regulates, and promotes quidditch gameplay worldwide, we share their mission to foster creativity, promote the benefits of an active lifestyle, and make a positive difference in our communities by encouraging social involvement and outreach. We believe our club succeeds in this, providing an avenue for students to meet one another, get exercise, get involved, and have fun. Since becoming the first quidditch team to form in Canada in 2008, the club and the sport has taken off. While quidditch is ultimately a great hobby, we also have a core group of members who are dedicated to competing. We have won the last two Canadian Cups and consistently place among the top teams in tournaments in the US, including the World Cup. Whatever quidditch might hold for you, whether it be a fun group of friends, a special way to experience a team sport, or a chance to get involved with the community, we highly encourage everyone to come join us. Every Saturday, when the weather permits, we hold open practices and welcome anyone to watch or join in, so come on out and discover quidditch!

Symphonic Band Symphonic Band is a wind band open to all McGill students who play traditional band instruments, no auditions required! We perform medium difficulty band pieces at our concert each semester and students are encouraged to set up their own small ensembles. This project was initiated due to the lack of a “fun wind symphony on campus and for our conductors to gain some non-credit field experience. Past repertoire has included everything from World of Warcraft to Wagner! In addition, we are a club as well as a wind band, so we provide our members both musical and social opportunities throughout the year!

SOS
Students Offering Support: McGill Chapter is a network of student volunteers working together to raise funds to raise the quality of education and life for those in developing nations through raising marks of our fellow University students. This is accomplished through our Exam-AID initiative where student volunteers run group review sessions prior to a midterm or final exam for a $15 donation. All of the money raised through SOS Exam-AIDs is funneled directly into sustainable educational projects in developing nations. Not only does SOS fund these projects, but SOS volunteers help build the projects on annual volunteer trips coordinated by each University chapter.

The Local Committee (LC) of World University Services of Canada (WUSC) at McGill University is an independent student-run group. It acts as a liaison between McGill University and WUSC. One of the major mandates of the WUSC-McGill is participating in the Student Refugee Program (SRP). Every semester McGill University raises a levy of 50 cents from every student’s tuition fees to fund the SRP. This levy accumulates to approximately $30,000 - $35,000 every year. The annual levy, along with the unused fund from previous years, are put together to create a budget to sponsor two students, typically one male and one female via WUSC’s student refugee program. The sponsored students are from refugee camps and have no access to post secondary education. This program is also run in other universities across Canada making post secondary education accessible to a handful of high school graduates from refugee camps every year. The coffee house event held on February 4th at SSMU bar was a fund raising and awareness raising event. Besides SRP, our committee is also involved in WUSC’s other fundraising campaigns such as Shine A Light (fund raising to purchase solar lamps for studying at night time in refugee camps where electricity is scarce) and Bike for Aids (fund raising to purchase low-cost bike ambulances designed to transport patients in Malawi). We hope to build a hard-working and innovative Local Committee so that with the support of WUSC and our faculty advisor (Prof. Philip Oxhorn), we want to instigate a project to build libraries in the refugee camps with donated books and funds.
