Age-itecture

Proposal for a new nursing home typology In later stages of life many people find themselves living in buildings that do not function well for them. The upkeep and social arrangements of housing designed for families can become burdensome in old age. The present solution to this is to move elders into housing oriented around varying levels of skilled nursing. These buildings, and the lives of the occupants, more closely resemble medical offices than housing. Elders’ social activities and lifestyles must adapt to the needs of the institution, rather than the other way around. Through Bureau of Labor Statistics data and our own brainstorming, we developed exhaustive lists of activities that constitute an independent lifestyle. These ranged from special

events like going to a movie or restaurant to the mundane channel-surfing and doing housework. We insisted that these activities be accessible to people of all ability levels, supported by both architecture and a user-centric approach to services. The result is an urban environment where the nursing home community and surrounding neighborhood mix to enrich both. Each nursing home resident has a small studio apartment, with a workshop/parlour space which is dedicated to their social life and hobbies, and able to be opened up to other residents. Group activities, normally regimented and centralized, can be more impromptu and resident-initiated. Housekeeping, personal care, professional services, and skilled nursing are provided like a hotel concierge. By providing flexible spaces for a plutheora of services and activities, the nursing home architecture preserves residents’ lifestyle and control over their environment.
