YEARBOOK 2019

Flashing back... Many things happened this year. Taylor Swift turned 30. One of the greatest architect, I.M Pei passed away… Karl Lagerfeld also left CHANEL, where we worked for 36 years, went to the heaven. Star Wars series ushers in its final chapter… Even Ironman has sacrificed to save the world… China-U.S. Trade war continues, Hong Kong problem broke out. But to look on the bright side. Woody finally got his truth love. We took a picture of a black hole for the first time. Human marathon record rises to less than two hours for the first time. The Raptors defeated the invincible Warriors and won the NBA championship in team history… The power of women right raises… And for myself This is the last year for me as a teenager. And I am a sophomore now Became the vice president and minister of design development or my club And most importantly, I met Elyn, the girl I like. In fact, we have spent three quarters of this year together… Looking back at the past year, many things happened. Some are satisfied while some are not. By inventorying the 2019, I’m also very exciting about the upcoming brand new decade.

Architectural representation and communication

Freshman year Semester 2 Finished at May 28th

Brief of the module In this module we were required to design three pavilions using the simplest elements like folded surface or curved surface. I was quite frustrated during this module because I thought that my design was leck of imagination. Finally, the score of this module was 72.

Three pavilions, three metaphorďźŒeach of them respectively stands for mountain, cave and waves. Mountain The vertical pavilion stands for mountain. The element this pavilion involved in is curved line. In the design, I use metal wires shaped in curves to shape a curved surface. This mountain does not look like what it should be in real life because it is curved, smooth and rounded. To a certain degree , it looks like the mountain in Chinese traditional painting.

1

Caves In my pavilion I use angled surface to represent caves. Just like the mountain, it also looks different from a real cave. However, I still called it cave because I want people walking into it like walking into a real cave to experience the changing of the cave. Waves What does waves in real world look like? Curved, round and untouchable? I use hyperbolic paraboloid as the element. I use squares as template, and rotated them by 5 degrees one by one to create a rotating and

fascinating waves because I think the essential element of the waves which fascinated me is it is variability. Waves are tumbling and motive. If you like surfing, you will find the waves of water looks like a hole which you can go through, and that is what I want to show in my pavilion.

Design Thinking and Articulation

Sophomore year Semester 1 Finished at Oct 24th

Brief of the module Space is about exploring and experiencing. In this module, we have done a lot of practices on the exploration of the materials and experiences of creating a space. In the body/building part, we used the simplest materials and elements to discover the characteristics of our roles. We have experienced how humans interact with each other, and also how we can form a space. During the solid/void, we learned how to use basic geometric solids to create a complex volume through different interactions such as interlocking, mounting and subtraction. And for the wax model, the relationship between positive and negative spaces were taught through the creation of the void in wax. In the last exercise, space/time, inhabitants are involved. We do not only aim on creating a space, but also on how to explore it, or experience it. The potential of the space has being explored by different movements. In addition, time is the key of the movements. Activities can be various when the time changed. Just like what inhabitants did in my ‘Iceberg Cathedral ’. This book will tell a story about a civil engineer's journey of exploration, from man-made buildings to nature landscapes. Eventually, the civil engineer will combine these two together to create a unique structure as well as architecture. Hope you can also experience the joy of

exploration while reading this book.Space is about exploring and experiencing. In this module, we have done a lot of practices on the exploration of the materials and experiences of creating a space. This wax model has a special ability of transparency. Due to its light blue colour, I refer to call him 'Iceberg Cathedral'. What possible activities can be inhabited in a cathedral? Take Notre Dame de Paris for example, cathedral is not only for Christian to pray, it can also be a place of interest for all people to appreciate, to go sightseeing, to have fun or interesting movements. Especially, this is an 'Iceberg Cathedral', so it is about exploring and experiencing the combination of artificiality and nature.

Small Space Design

Sophomore year Semester 1 Finished at Dec 13th

Brief of the module In this project we have two clients, a historian and a woodcarver. The design of this project began from the Luban Jing poem: Ferocity. By measuring the survery site, I was albe to make my own footruler. Then a ink drawing which represtent the proportion of basic elements in surveyed room was produced and will act as a important role in the project design.

The design concept of this project was based on the idea of separation.

From the ink drawing, one object is separating into two parts, and there are many small pieces getting out of the control. The two parts later became the two individual spaces for the craftsman and the scholar. Also, from the ink drawing, it has the idea of disconstruction, diffierent floor level, separated walkways... those abstruct elements has formed the basic concept of this project. For my two clients, to a certain degree, they are very different people and that’s why they live in two separated rooms. However, both of them are the lover of natural. So I designed hugh french windows and dock for them. Even a walkway from the ground to the roof garden. Meandering stream is a traditional activity for acient Chinese scholars, painters, writers and poets. Usually they will sit together along a river or pool. People will drinking, chatting together to exchange their idea or life or new discoveries. It looks like the art salon nowadays. So for the historian and woodcaver, they want to hold this activity once a year as for a chance to get along with the old friends and meet with new people. That’s the reason why the ground floor is a totally free space and in the middle of the plate has two pools for people to chat together.

Structures and Materials

Sophomore year Semester 1 Finished at Dec 16th

Brief of the module In this project, we are going to make a model which is 275 mm in width, 275 mm in length and 825 mm in height. And it has a foundation which is 275 mm by 275 mm and 100 mm height. Through the process of model making, the understanding of structures and materials will be grasped. Through the experiments of different joints and structures, we will learn how to distribute the load from top to the end, how to make the structure to be resistant to wind force, how to chose suitable materials and thickness for the structure‌

We think for the structure, there are two different strategies: skeleton system and surface system. Skeleton structures can be considered as columns and beams in real life, while surface structures can be considered as walls or load-bearing facades. Our group has working on both directions at first in order to find out the best structure for the model. After the discussion, our group decided to use wood panel. And for the joint, we got some inspirations from cardboard joint. We decided to use a small triangle wood piece to connect two wood panels. We wanted to use the wood panel as an exoskeleton, like the TOD’S Omotesando Building designed by Toyo Ito. By cutting the panel into some specific shape, it can not only bring a new way to distribute the load weight, but also save some usage of materials and increase the area of openings. Because of the component force in this direction, the corner has the tend to expend. We need to add another joint in the bottom to lock two panels tightly.

ARC104

Structures and Materials

For the foundation Concrete foundation part, we gave up is stable and hard. out the idea of using However, structure is light, concrete. use concrete as

foundation will easily damage the model itself. Thus, we use high density wood board to make a box for foundation. And we bore holes on it. Later, we use screws act as poling to insert into the foundation and connect the main structure. The design of the model also had considered geometric aesthetics in it. In the front view, the model will look exactly like the original Outline Model No.1. However, if the model rotates for 45 degrees, it will looks like picture 3. Also, if you look through the model from the opening on the top, you will have some feelings of the beauty of geometry and symmetry. This time, the load was easily reach to 15.4kg without any deformation. In order to ensure model integrity, we haven’t kept on testing. However, we conservatively estimate that the safe weight of our model is 25kg and the limit weight is 45kg.

"During this module, we have learned many different kinds of materials and structures."
