I

n de Bogaard is one of the earliest shopping centres in the Netherlands. Ambitious and modern in its original concept, it turned over the years into a monofuncional island abandoned after opening hours, unattractive for investors and thus with vast vacant commercial areas and unused parkings. Proximity to Rijswijk train station and expected growth of the district offer a potential and opportunity for transformation. The aim of the project made by Posadmaxwan is to create an attractive local centre, connected to the surroundings and improving life quality of a healthy and lively city.

The project started as a framework with several principles that then developed into a comprehensive project. We decided to transform retail space and create a more compact shopping mall, allowing for development of residential buildings and effectively creating a dense and quality urban fabric. Beatrixlaan, a wide street along the western edge of the centre, was redesigned into a much greener and narrower profile, opening a possibility for expansion of the development area and creating a more human-like scale. The volume of In de Bogaard was broken down into several smaller blocks that created openings and connections towards the surroundings, especially a new designed Leefstraat, cutting East-West through the shopping centre and linking Ministerbuurt with Rijswijk station. New public spaces were introduced- two squares on both ends of the green cut-through, that break the boundary between the surroundings and the shopping mall itself. At the same time existing squares were given a new quality, especially Bogaardplein, also known as the-windiest-place-in-the-country. Rooftops of the lower buildings, both new and existing, are meant to be an extension of the public space - planned as green parks and sportfields accessible from the ground level by inhabitants and users of the shopping centre. Along with introduction of solar panels on the towers and high quality of building materials, the area is expected to meet the ambition of energy-neutral future of the Netherlands in the coming years.

T

his is a collection of smaller urban projects I worked on at Posadmaxwan. They involve quick and sharp analyses of selected areas and serve as a set of guidlines or suggestions for the client on the potential use of the area, its opportunities, threats and possible density. In some cases the project is also a reflection on existing and/or future development and acts as a start of a discussion between several parties involved. Project in Woerden was a critical reflection of a current masterplan and a concept for its extension on the whole area, currently dominated by industrial buildings and small offices. Its centre point is the recently finished Gemeentehuis and involves better connectivity of the building to the station and city centre, along with introduction of a bicycle and pedestrian passage over the train tracks.

Woonzorg in Nieuw Waldeck, Den Haag is project of a new facility that will replace the old one and a public space surrounding it. Its aim is to incorporate health facilities and dwellings for elderly with other housing typologies and create an inclusive, friendly and mixed environment.

Development around Salvador Allendelaan in Purmerend is based on similar principles as the one in Den Haag, yet in a slightly bigger scale. Moreover, it introduces a typology of Mobiliteitshuizen - parking hubs with public functions accessible from the ground level and providing green energy with solar panels on the rooftops. This solution limits space needed for parking and car roads, allowing for large car-free public spaces around housing blocks. Project in Kanaleneiland, Utrecht, is a redevelopment of one of the urban blocks of a visionary modernist project that degraded over the years. The assignment follows the notion of several projects and strategies in the area of revitalising Kanaleneiland and transforming it into a new, lively neighbourhood. U Delft, expected to reach 25 000 students by 2025, is a rapidly growing university in the recent years. To meet its innovative character the university’s campus is going through major transformations. New educational, research and housing facilities were built, existing buildings adapted to current needs and many public spaces, such as the main street, Mekelweg, was completely redesigned. Posadmaxwan developed a vision of the campus that serves as a set of rules, directions and a guidance for the ongoing transformation. Campus Zuid masterplan is a follow-up of this vision, and a further and more detailed project of the southern part of TU Delft, currently still heavily underdeveloped. This project takes into consideration several earlier designs made for the area in the course of the last 17 years, providing a plan tailored to the current and future needs.

The campus consists of a continuation of Mekelweg that reaches Campuslab, central public space, and several zones around it: University zone containing Aerospace Engineering and Applied Sciences faculties; Deltares, a research facility in the field of water; Reactor Institute; sport facilities and Business Park. The main ambition for the campus is to create a modern working and learning area, without borders and isolating functions from each other. Campuslab serves as the major binding piece, providing space for exhibition, activities and social events, supported with a function of university theatre and a nearby cantine. Mekelweg goes through the whole campus, joining on its way faculties and research institutes with sport facilities and ends with a bridge leading to green polders outside Delft. The focus of the project is on the entrance to the campus from Schoemakerstraat, creating an attractive green boulevard both for car users, cyclists and pedestrians, as well as developing a new typology for the business park. The business zone is divided into clusters, each of which contains a green corridor serving as a meeting and entrance zone for the buildings. Every cluster has a parking hub, combining parking solution with a public function in the groundfloor. The project attempts to provide the highest quality of public space, while introducing significant focus on ecological structure and preserving as much of the current qualities as possible.

(Dis)Continuity vertical garden in Amsterdam 2050 Individual work 2018 TU Delft Master thesis graduation project, Complex Projects studio. Tutors: Steven Steenbruggen, Hubert van der Meel Location: Apollolaan, Amsterdam, The Netherlands The project touches upon the topic of transformation of Amsterdam in 2050. Over the course of a year the work consisted of a comprehensive research part, both individually and in a group of 8, defining a problem the city is facing, proposing a group future strategy and creating a framework of an architectural solution. The second part is an answer to the research, a design proposal.


A

msterdam faces a problem common to many historical metropolises - how to maintain the transformation of urban fabric, while preserving its identity? I believe that the city centre cannot fall into stagnation and instead of becoming an open-air museum it should still develop to provide a better future for its inhabitants. In my project I attempt to improve urban environment by creating connections over the borders and effectively breaking isolated clusters, maintaining continuity within the city and between the districts, as well as enhance life quality and environment between the buildings. The project is a landmark, a reference point in a new network of walkability that introduces a concept of a new typology of a public function for Amsterdam 2050 – a climate centre. Its aim is to multiply green area ratio and purify the air, effectively improving local climate as well as offering a new activity space for locals and an attraction for tourists outside their cluster within the central city.

The site of the ending of Minervalaan axis, part of Plan Zuid by H.P. Berlage, has a great potential for such a public building. It is currently occupied by the Hilton Hotel, that in my belief does not contribute to the quality of urban fabric of the area and, first and foremost, it privatises what should belong to the public realm a meaningful square and the canal. As an alternative I propose an open building, transparent both visually and functionnally, open to the visitors and local community, a green vertical garden. Its main structure is a concrete frame, a modular system inspired by the work of Rob Nijsse. Its repetitiveness allows for great flexibility of forming the interior, that consists of five basic elements - open paths, green areas, urban farms, greenhouses and pavilions of specific public functions. Each floor of the building addresses a different area of public life. The groundfloor is a meeting point, creating an intermediary space between the street and the canal, open from every side of the building. The first floor and second floors are designed for education and science purposes. The third floor is a leisure area, with an extensive tropical greenhouse. The building introduces a concept of public participation. With an access to the climate centre anyone living nearby could enjoy planting their own flowers, vegetables and taking care of any plants. The gardens remain open, accessible by everyone. The users of a local community by contributing to the centre, in return are granted the benefits - they become a part of the garden users.

A New City Gate public arcade in Prague Individual work Spring 2017 TU Delft Msc2 project, Public Buildings studio. Tutors: Susanne Komossa, Sien van Dam Location: Masarykovo Nadrazi, Prague, Czech Republic The studio focused on a proposal of a contemporary urban palace that, following many precedents of such a builiding in Prague, addressed transformation of the existing fabric and attempted to tackle its issues on the scale of architectural and urban design.

his project started with a short analysis of the city of Prague, followed by the studio trip. My conclusions were that the city has a very strong historical structure - dense urban blocks, although filled with newer buildings refer to medieval streets, trade routes and city walls. While the envelopes of the blocks remain unaffected, their insides present much more changing structures. To enlarge the public realm of the city nu40

merous passages and arcades perforated the blocks to create new streets and squares, hidden from an unaware observant. I see this structure of representative facades and unexpected interiors as form of Chambers of Secrets, which became one of the focal points of my design. On the other hand, historical boundaries seem to divide

the city from functional perspective. Tourists, a significant part of the city life even outside the main season, focus on the Old Town and Mala Strana, offices are usually located in the New Town, between the lines once defined by city walls and bastions and most of dwellings and schools are located outside the historical area.

Feedback Placemaking post-industrial redevelopment strategy Cooperation with: Ada Jaśkowiec December 2019 Europan 15 Productive Cities 2 competiton, Winner Location: Huta Warszawa site, Warsaw, Poland For this competition we proposed a strategy for incorporating the still functioning Warsaw Steel Plant into the city in form of a productive area. Building upon the requirements of social, economic and environmental, resilience, the project designs a framework of constants and variables and characterises relations between them by defining crucial processes, successions and interdependecies.


H

uta Warszawa is a strategic site for the development of Warsaw. It is a vast area located close to the Młociny metro station, where the investment pressure is high. What it becomes in the future is not a local issue, but it is of major importance for the whole city. Hence we feel the urgency to look at the project on four different perspectives. The City scale brings up the vision for the city and establishes major development scenario’s. District scale resolves conflicts that arise as a result and translates city-scale ambitions into spatial decisions, without compromising local priorities. Strategic Site scale focuses on combining district objectives with local ones. The Project Site scale treats future residents and tenants as a top priority. Active participation of users into the planning progress is welcome, as bottom-up urbanism can bring about much more innovative solutions. Successful and resilient design requires constant switching between the scales, analysing feedback which comes from one scale and updating the other. That is why we decided to call oour project Feedback Placemaking.

In our proposal, we are not looking for one definite project. We find definite proposals not flexible enough to be able to adjust to possibly very varied conditions. Our project is instead a search for balance between defined and undefined. Our concern is how set out the guidelines within which the area can further develop itself. Like a Roman castrum romanum, we would like to provide general structure and suggestions of functions and allow for lot of freedom elsewhere. Building upon the original urban concept, an extension of the local main street, Kasprowicza is created as a dominant axis, that creates a spatial connection to areas which are potentially located within the metro station catchment area, yet in reality are very disconnected. The area around the axis is divided into zones forming perpendicular stripes - an eclectic composition of functions. The future of the zone in the heart of Huta and closest to the metro station lies in flexibility and openess. We propose to treat temporality as a great opportunity, not as a burden. The area poses the unique chance to become a testing ground for new urban solutions. It acts like a trial-error experiment, whose aim is to explore the possibilities of the plot in order to be able to choose for permanent functions which will work well in the area.

Modular cohousing residential unit in Nadarzyn Individual work Spring 2015 Warsaw University of Technology Bachelor thesis project. Tutor: Piotr Grodecki Location: ul. GĹ‚ogowa, Nadarzyn, Poland The project presents a concept of a system of wooden modular housing, based on existing technologies. The focal point of the thesis were technical solutions, from the overall structure to the details of joints between modular panels.

It is an attempt to create an alternative solution to common problems in most popular types of residential architecture in suburbs of Warsaw. sports facilities or a recreational area. The project consists of 4 different types of houses made of three-dimensional wooden modules. The estate is located near GĹ‚ogowa Street in Nadarzyn, a small suburban town located within 12 kilometres from Warsaw, the capital of Poland.

Dimensions of modules allow easy transport and assembly. While the system was a personal project, it was based on leading Polish and German companies solutions. The modules, along with interior finishing, are manufactured in a factory, and then delivered to the site and installed on concrete slabs. It is a higly efficient meth-

od allowing a wide variey of configurations and styles in the building layout, as well as significantly reducing overal completion schedule.

Beerologist Beer label design This is a project of a beer label for a craft beer brewery of a friend. The concept was to create a simple and plainly informative presentation of the product. Its main point is a diagram, made out of six main characteristics of a beer. The diagram creates a unique shape for every type, making it easy to recognise a particular one with just a glance at the label, supported with a color.

boardgame re-design

how the tiles form paths and towns by being placed next to each other, the graphic design is my own proposal. Moreover, the tiles were given a third dimension of buildings and walls.

This project is a redesign of a popular boardgame, Carcassonne by Klaus Jurgen Wrede. While I maintained the original gameplay and initial concept, for instance
