BLURRR 7 Performance Art Biennial

November 12-26

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Jerusalem International Oud Festival, dedicated to the ancient Arabian fat-bellied lute, opens dialogue and collaborative avenues between Arab classical music and Jewish liturgical poems, linking old and new, East and West. The foremost Israeli and international players of the oud and other stringed instruments that developed from it, pay tribute to the poets of the Golden Age of Spain and the great artists of the Arab world, as well as spotlighting on Syrian musical tradition, alongside Greek, Turkish and other musical styles. Over the years, the festival has presented amazing fusion experiments, with different elements thrown into the mix including cantorial music, ancient folk sounds, contemporary folk-rock, acoustic metal, blues and medieval hymns. The Oud Festival has developed from a modest few shows into a two-week event, offering performances in five Jerusalem venues and drawing sellout crowds. Markus Mizne - Love Letters

Art & CULTURE pick of the month

Markus Mizne: Love Letters Tel Aviv Museum of Art Oct 30

Markus Mizne (1908-1994) was inspired by great artists such as Miro, Pollock, de Kooning and Twombly. He knew their work well, and acquired many of their important paintings. Mizne’s paintings are calligraphic, a kind of automatic writing in which the hand is activated by an inner force of a private, intimate memory. These seemingly vague and undecipherable sketches, are charged with the tension created between the sublime and the trivial. These quick sketches, apparently made inadvertently, convey a sense of inner turmoil, and accumulate into a kind of personal diary. Most of the paintings are dedicated to the artist’s wife, the internationally acclaimed pianist Felicja Blumental, and others are jointly dedicated to this wife and to his daughter Annette. The winding line in these painting-letters leads the pictorial rhythm, and the viewer can experience a rich variety of emotions, some of ecstasy, some of sorrow. Mon, Wed, Sat 10am- 4pm, Tues, Thur 10am-10pm, Fri 10am- 2pm. Sun closed. www.tamuseum.com New exhibitions Beit Hatfutsot, Museum of the Jewish People THE REAL AND THE IDEAL: THE PAINTING OF LUDWIG BLUM (1891-1974) The first exhibition of the artist Ludwig Blum, known for his panoramic paintings of Jerusalem, the city where he lived and worked for fifty years. The exhibition incorporates an architecture-sculpture-performance approach and includes a video

The three sculptural works are made of wood and all creations in the exhibition hold a dialogue with the history of modernism. Thematically, the works relate to family and education and all works are characterized by a didactic aspect. 6 Tarsat Blvd, Tel Aviv. Mini Me Exhibition at Urbanix Nov 1-12, 2009

This gallery and shop dedicated to urban art and vinyl toys, introduces and promotes urban artists and designers from all over the world. The gallery space hosts a variety of unique exhibitions and the Street Art shop, offers the largest range of vinyl toys in Israel, fashion, accessories, gadgets, books, magazines, prints and more.

As part of a study project, third-year Industrial Design students were asked to address their persona and selfperception and to design a toy character in their own image. Inspiration for the toys came from the designer’s past experiences, personality, character and physical appearance.

As part of the manufacturing process a unique 3D printing technology was used, providing the designers with an accurate and realistic “picture” of the product during the design phase. The project’s results, which form the exhibition, demonstrate each designer’s personal working process, unique approach, and individual selfexpression.
