History Wilmington University is an independent coeducational institution of higher education offering associate, baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degree programs. The University was chartered by the State of Delaware as a non-profit, four-year institution of higher learning on December 27, 1967. On June 27, 1975, Wilmington University was accredited and admitted to full membership by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Universities and Schools. The University initiated its first graduate program, a Master of Business Administration degree, in February 1977. In 1991, the Doctor of Education in Innovation and Leadership program was begun and offered in both the northern and southern portions of the state. A Doctor of Business Administration program was initiated in the spring of 2008, and in 2013, the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program was launched. To accommodate the institution’s growth at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, the New Castle site has undergone considerable renovation and construction over the past 15 years. The Pratt Student Center was completed in 1988. The Peoples Library Building opened in 1995 and an additional classroom and student services building, The Admissions and Classroom Center, opened in 2000 and was renamed the Audrey Kohl Doberstein Admissions Center in the fall of 2007. In the almost four decades of the University’s existence, it has expanded its locations beyond New Castle to include other locations in Delaware, as well as sites in Maryland, New Jersey, and a growing online presence. The governance of Wilmington University rests with the Board of Trustees which is self-perpetuating. Dr. Donald E. Ross was appointed founding President late in 1967 and held the office from 1968 through 1977. He was succeeded by Nicholas N. Mazarella who served as Acting President from July 1, 1977, through January 30, 1979. Dr. Audrey K. Doberstein became President on April 6, 1979. Upon Dr. Doberstein’s retirement in June of 2005, Dr. Jack P. Varsalona was appointed President. He served as President until June 2017, at which point Dr. LaVerne T. Harmon was appointed President on July 1, 2017. In September of 2007, Wilmington College officially became known as Wilmington University in order to better reflect the evolving nature of the institution.

Surveys Wilmington University utilizes student surveys to gather information regarding student satisfaction, student engagement, and program outcomes from various levels at different stages in the education process on a Universitywide level each year. The primary survey instruments the University administers are the College Outcomes Survey (formerly the ACT Survey), and the Annual Alumni Survey. Additionally, the Office of Institutional Research also develops and deploys a number of other survey instruments throughout the year. The survey topics, as well as their audiences, are varied. The types of surveys created include, but are not limited to:      

Course/program outcomes and satisfaction surveys Pre- and post-class skill assessments Department-specific surveys (Athletics, Academic Advising, Career Services, Library, Student Success Center) Community Awareness/Impressions of Wilmington University University event-related surveys (for both students and faculty/staff) Surveys for faculty and staff

The following pages provide information and data related to the two major survey instruments administered. Full reports for these surveys are available by contacting the Office of Institutional Research.

Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) College Senior Survey Each year graduates are sent a college outcomes survey to measure University outcomes, student satisfaction, and experiences. In previous years, these responses were gathered through the ACT College Outcomes Survey; however, in 2015 the instrument was changed to the HERI College Senior Survey because the ACT College Outcomes Survey was no longer available. The College Senior Survey is administered to graduating undergraduate seniors and includes a range of questions related to outcomes and post-college plans including:      

Engagement Student-Faculty interaction Satisfaction Cognitive and affective development Degree aspirations, career plans, and post-college plans Goals and values

As of the date of this publication, the results from the 2018 distribution of the HERI College Senior Survey were not available. Once these results become available, a formal report will be available on the IR SharePoint site. The results indicated below represent those of students surveyed in 2017 during the University’s third administration of the HERI College Senior Survey.

The Annual Alumni Survey The Wilmington University Annual Alumni Survey was born out of a need for a more comprehensive, uniform look at program outcomes and alumni satisfaction across all colleges. The survey asks identical information from students across all colleges and levels. By creating one instrument that is unchanging across all colleges, program outcomes and alumni satisfaction can be measured more completely. However, though the basic structure of each survey does not change, each instrument allows for additional questions to be included to address accreditation or program review needs. This survey was deployed in October 2017 to a total of 4,937 alumni who graduated between August 2016 and May 2017. Of those contacted, 685 individuals responded, for a response rate of 13.8%. Prior to this year’s survey administration, Institutional Research worked with University Relations in a coordinated effort to increase awareness of this survey to our alumni population. Examples of initiatives completed included a postcard campaign to encourage alumni to update their contact information, and a social media campaign that coincided with the launch of the survey in October. Institutional Research also met with Career Services to incorporate questions related to employment that are worded in compliance with NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) standards and protocol. These questions capture details about what alumni are doing professionally after graduation and, in addition to employment, include information regarding full time volunteer work, military service, and further education. Highlights from the full trended analysis of the four years for which data was collected for this survey are presented below. The full report can be found on the IR SharePoint site.
