Hotel Fuencarral

Concept for an hybrid hotel in Madrid

A hotel is a space where all kinds of activities take place such as; leisure, work, rest, commercial, social...but, as a matter of fact, hotel design is still a very conventional and conservative field, bounded by the simple repetition of obsolete models. This proposal tries to go over this typological and conventional issue, by the introduction of a second programatic dimension in terms of uses, according to the opportunities offered by the urban surroundings. Calle Fuencarral is one of the main commercial street of Madrid that runs from the city centre till the fancy area of Chueca. It hosts along its course pedestrian pathways, shops, restaurants and public spaces, and a remarkable flow of people and events. Hotel Fuencarral occupies an empty plot in a relevant intersection, where the corner is the element of connection with the main street. Here the facade breaks to disclose the inner complexity and to bring urban life inside.

Kivinokka Waterfront

A new proposal between city and nature, Helsinki

discovery

relation

This is a proposal for a new waterfront for Kivinokka, a protected peninsula not far from Helsinki city center. The project aims to find a new relation between natural and artificial landscape, in a rural oasis occupied by hundreds of tiny summer cottages, where people want to find temporary refreshment from the urban city life. The site can be reached easily by public transportation, bycicle or car from the city center, but despite of its vcinity to the center, it shows a completely different organization. Here there is no sign of urban planning, cottages spread all around the area in a spontaneous aggregations and there is a total absence of facilities. The new system wants to be a key to strenghten the relation with the local environment, in terms of use and participation. Here, the waterfront represents the border line between the forest and the city, in both physical and conceptual sense. The project belongs to the site, is integrated with it, is a tool to read and to archieve a meaning. Its language is space, material, environment, design and construction.

* A shell into the landscape

A prototype for a minimum dwelling could be a key to undestand a landscape, a tool to read it and to be involved with it. An interior to comprehend the outside world. A house defines a limit in an otherwise undefined space, is a built space both open and closed, to reflect the landscape’s openness and to fix some certain limits. The proyect focuses on the relation between the concept of inner and outer space, openness and closure, contemplation and inhabit. Is a projection of the local landscape in an intimate and domestic scale.

Barcelo House + Studio

Single house for an artist and his family, Reayo del Roble

The Barcelo House is conceived as a synthesis and a paradigm of the surrounding landscape. Its organisation scheme is ispired by the harshness and horizontality of the local environment. The spaces are generated from two long stone-walls planted in the hilly ground. Some small cabins hang on to this walls, as spyglasses towards the wide valley and the lake below. This elements select views and bring the landscape inside, to find an harmonic relationship with site and archive a meaning.

31

This is a concept-house and a studio for an artist and his family. The project is located in the Madrid region, deep in the countryside landscape. The long horizontal walls and the boxes are the main organizers elements, connections are enclosed between the walls. On one side the common spaces, on the other side bedrooms and private spaces. The line represents the wide landscape, the box represents the living intimate space.

Sordio Town Hall

A building as an urban link, Sordio

Sordio is a small town close to the Milan urban area. The request was to design a new town hall. in an empty lot in the main square. The new building should host all the required funcion for the mayor and his/her staff and some public office and facilities for the citizens, such as library service, medical services, a police office, a stamp duty office and sone other municipalities services. The proposal fulfill all the requests, and due to its central role and location, tries to re-connect the surroundings creating a new public space to collect all the local energies and improve social life. The architectural language is inspired to the modern northerrn italian tradition, a longitudinal pure parallelepiped that occupies the long side of the square, with some voids that allow permeability and circulation. The cladding is made out of local stone panels that give massive appearence to the building.

The building occupies longitudinally the lot, and divides the square in two stripes. It is disposed as a new central focus to attract fluxes and forces from the surrounding environment and to start a requalification of the public spaces, currently used mainly as parking lots. The new town hall is a symbol of the community and a new urban link to improve public life. Project has been developed from the concept untill the structural detail. Two concrete cores around the staircases bear a steel structure. A cantilever part faces the main street and permits the building to enhance its massivity.

The courtyard of the building at the ground floor is an open-air hall. During the warm season people could enjoy the breeze and chill out on the boxes while waiting for their turn. Boxes are elements on a grid. By moving them is possible to compose different seatings or aggregations. At night time interior lights provide suggestive illumination and create a cozy public spot.

Twisted shelter box

Disaster prevention pavillon, Istanbul

This is a proposal for an Info Point out of a 40’ container. It is part of the Istanbul Disaster Prevention and Education Centre’s program. It is open to the public and its purpose is to inform people about natural disasters topics, in an heartquakes risk area like Turkey. The shape, material, use of illumination aim to instill a sense of uncertainty to the visitors, in an emphatic way. Thanks to some screens people can interact with the exhibition and feel all the unpleasant sensation of instability due to a natural disaster and become aware of the risks. The pavillion can be placed in any suitable public space.

Urban Condenser

A new public space in Milano

This project has born as a result of a detailed study on the urban context. It is located on an empty plot in the heart of Milano, between the Central Railway Station and an important commercial street (corso Buenos Aires). This area is a longitudinal stripe (600mx60m), which is divided in tree main blocks: parking lot, public garden and an empty concrete slab. Every section is strictly characterized by funcion, form and spatial features. The new Urban Condenser wants to break this rigidity throught the insertion of three programatic and architectural stripes, aximilate the fluxes of the urban context and generate a new kind of multipurpose space. Here, the concept becomes architecture: the fluxes generate spaces, plans, section, and programs. The building can host a wide range of events, from dance performances to fashion show. It is a new urban core in Milan, an event-space, an intersection of energies, a condenser of activities, a renewal of a waste-space.

The Condenser wants to be a collector of urban forces, an infrastructure for events and a catalyst of fluxes.

Two corridors are generated by fluxes in the groundfloor, where also the floors textures and the nervous wall lines give a strong perception of the treble space and dynamism. Two squares at both endings create a void that reveals the bulding from the main streets crossing the lot. Due to the variation of his facades, the Urban Condenser is everchanging to the eye of the visitors, and reveals gradually its complexity through the broken lines of his exterior shell. In the basement the division in three stripes is even more enhanced. A central space runs all along the building, it constricts and enlarges the side galleries. Here, light, materials and walls create different situations, for various programs. The central stripe is a unique space that could host several activities, from fashion shows to exhibitions and concerts. The event-space is like an underground bridge connecting two squares to provide maximum permeability.

Project site is Hernesaari, located in the south coastline of Helsinki city centre. Nowadays the area is used by different business, harbour facilities, industries, boating enterprenours, and a cruise ship port. Is a gate to the city center for who arrives from the baltic sea. There are already plans for a future developement of the area, including residential buildings, job and business facilities, and recreational services. The task of the project is to create five spots of urban space for temporary use, suitable to the local environment. The proposal is developed as a path throught five public points that are links between the city and the terminal, to improve life experience in Hernesaari and to introduce the city to the newcomers. Every spot along the path focuses on one main funcion, but each one can host spontaneous activities. The result is a whole public system, susteinable, cheap, easy to dismantle but, at the same time, built to last and to be experienced.
