Keynote speaker, James Levine, Ph.D., LICSW is the director of James Levine & Associates and has been in this role since 1998. He provides consultation, supervision and training across New England as well as nationally, focusing primarily on the intersection among trauma, mental health and behavioral issues. He works with clinical and teaching staff, families, and public agency staff and has a special expertise in consulting to school principals.

Challenging Children, Challenging Behaviors with Dr. James Levine This presentation outlines the on-the-ground implications of the various kinds of trauma children experience. We’ll also look at the impact of some primary childhood mental health and neuro-developmental issues and how they translate to the real world of schools and classrooms. The morning keynote outlines critical aspects of trauma, behavioral health and neurodevelopmental disorders. Along with describing these areas in detail, we’ll look at interventions that make practical sense in school settings and are supported by current research. The first afternoon session explores ways to apply what we discussed during the keynote and allows time for participant questions and areas of concern. The second afternoon session, for those who wish to go deeper with the material, will utilize an illustrative case study to integrate today’s content.

Career Development Considerations for Students who Have Experienced Trauma with Candy Tavernier, RSE-TASC Transition Specialist, FEH BOCES
For those who wish to go deeper with the material, an illustrative case study will be utilized to integrate today’s content.
Research has shown that trauma may impact the way a person engages in the career development process. Beliefs about self-worth, thoughts about careers and what is possible, as well as actual work performance and ability, may be impacted. In this session, participants will be exposed to how trauma can impact the career development process and will learn about strategies and supports to help individuals develop skills to be successful.

Restorative Practices with Tammie Miller, Director, Resolution Center of Jefferson & Lewis Counties, Jeannette Rushford, Principal, Jefferson County ACES, Shantelle Curtis, L-MSW, Jefferson-Lewis BOCES Our three presenters will talk about building a culture of care using Restorative Practices and Justice in our communities and schools. The three tiers, restorative circles, diversion, pro-social supports, and additional resources will be highlighted during the workshop. Data and case studies will be presented to support how the practices are successful. Please expect an interactive environment. This team has been trained by Tom Cavanaugh from Colorado University, the International Institute of Restorative Justice (IIRP) and Kay Pranis (the author of Circle Forward) of Suffolk University. **This session will be repeated March 27th**

Assistive Technology Tools to Support the Mental Well-being of Students with Lisa Tebo, Director of Assistive Technology and Education, Clarkson University Students who face emotional and behavioral challenges on a day-to-day basis may find it difficult, if not impossible, to perform at their best academically. In this session, we’ll review some of the assistive technology solutions that are available to help students manage anxiety, distractibility, task completion and other behavioral issues. Solutions will encompass apps and mainstream technologies, wearables, and specialized technology appropriate for a school or home environment.

Why have the ELA Standards Changed and How do the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards in English Language Arts Reflect that Change? What is the Impact on our Special Education Population with Cheryl Dodds, Facilitator, CVES/NCTRC This session will allow participants to engage in discussion of the introductory documents and an in-depth look at the revisions to find answers to these questions. The NYS Next Generation standards are a result of a two-year exercise in reflective practice that has demonstrated how a collaborative process of review can create a stronger, more focused set of learning outcomes accessible for all types of learners. Participants will look at how the standards are defined, how they relate to curriculum, instruction and assessment, and how they impact student learning. It will include discussion around how introductory documents can be used as meaningful tools to guide local decisions about instructional practice, curriculum and local assessment.
