CONTEMPORARY LATIN AMERICAN ART

HA 551 (Issues in Art History) Robertson F 2–4:50 PM, Main 230 This course unfolds in a post-colonial framework of subaltern studies. Period-styles, derived from mainstream modernism and linked with the marginalization of Latin American art, are exploded as students explore "constellations" of avant-garde art production. Shaped by propositions that oscillate between the transcendental ideals of modernism and materialities precluded by those ideals—these "constellations" capture the flux of history with an eye toward contemporary issues. Students breakout in turn: probing material accessible in NY Metropolitan museums, galleries and public spaces, and subjecting starting points for the course to critique. 3 credits
