To maintain one point of consistency, the dates, countries of origin and typeface lists for each biography were taken (with minor exceptions) from An A–Z of Type Designers by Neil Macmillan (2006, Yale University Press). This project is not to be reproduced, distributed or published except as an example in the designer’s portfolio—or possibly the professor’s teaching portfolio—wherein it will be presented clearly as a student project. United Kingdom 1882–1940 Before his training in typography, Eric Gill studied to become an architect, which eventually contributed to his linear expressions and his ability to pay attention to fine details. He was strongly influenced by one of his teachers at Central School of Arts and Crafts, Edward Johnston. His most famous typeface Gill Sans, created in 1928, is now one of the most widely used typefaces in England, where it is known as “the Helvetica of England.” Its diverse line weight, which is a humanist characteristic, makes it more calligraphic and legible than other sans-serif typefaces. Germany B. 1918 Hermann Zapf first entered into the world of typography through calligrapher Rudolf Koch. After completing an apprenticeship retouching letters, Zapf designed Gilgenart, his first printed typeface, for the Stempel type foundry. He continued to design many typefaces in the late 1940s and 50s, including Optima and Palatino. In 1968, Zapf created the Manuale Typographicum, a limited edition book displaying various typefaces through the use of alphabets and quotes. Zapf continued his work teaching at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he became familiar with computers, with the help of companies such as IBM and Xerox. During this time Zapf digitized calligraphic script from his drawings, which led to the creation of the Zapfino type family. By: Michelle Wang
