Welcome to Castle Hill

The Historic Henderson Castle Trend45’s Castle on the Hill event was every photographer, model, blogger, and stylists dream brought to reality. Trend45 rented out the entire Henderson Castle, established in 1895 in Kalamazoo, MI for a day of creative exploration and content creation. The famous architecture of the castle was home to one of the most successful early businessmen, Frank Henderson. Mr. Henderson owned the Henderson-Ames Company, which made uniform regalia for secret societies, fraternal organizations, and the military. Mr. Henderson and his wife owned the plot of land that the castle sits on and had dreams of building it into what it is now, a unique and beautiful piece of architectural history. In 1888, he enlisted help to create his new home, and by 1895, the Henderson Castle was complete. The castle includes 25 rooms in total including seven baths, as well as an elevator, a third-floor ballroom, and even a hot tub on the roof. The castle’s exterior is sandstone and brick, while the interior wood includes mahogany, bird’s eye maple, quartered oak, birch, and American sycamore. Since, the castle has been in three horror movies, and featured on the Discovery Channel and House Hunters. Trend 45 allowed metro Detroit creatives to explore and shoot in this 11,000-square foot Queen-Ann style mansion that sits on 3 acres. Throughout this magazine, you will be able to enjoy the amazing photographs, fashion, and models that made Castle on the Hill one of the best Trend45 events yet. Dylan Hudson is a photographer and former model from Grand Rapids, MI. Check out his work on Instagram at @photarrow.ports and his portrait work at @photarrow. Q: Since this is your second Trend45 event, what keeps you coming back? Trend45 events are a wonderful way to meet people. As a photographer, coming to an event with models, photographers, stylists, and bloggers, you know you will be collaborating and making art which is what keeps me coming back. At my first Trend45 event, Midwinter Manor, I learned how to use studio lighting from a seasoned photographer. There is always something new to learn when hanging out with people in your field. Q: What would you say to someone looking to break into photography with no experience? Try to find your own style. When you put your mark on your art and brand yourself, people start to recognize your work without seeing your name next to it. As a photographer, that is one of the ultimate goals. Q: What are your favorite types of shoots and what part of the day is best for shooting? My favorite shoots are casual lifestyle shoots. I like shooting people who look real, not like they are trying to hard or posing too much. As far as time of day to shoot, my favorite time is at night which is an unlikely sentence you will hear come out of a photographer’s mouth. I like using a lot of artificial light and playing with that in my photographs.

SPRING

awakening

One thing you can count on from a Trend45 event is the high fashion. Models, stylists, bloggers, and photographers all came to Castle on the Hill looking to shoot the hottest trends and styles. For the spring 2018 season, you can expect to see everything from pastels and sequins, to chunky sneakers and plastic.

The 1980s Every season, it seems an old decade is made new again and spring 2018 is no exception. Every designer from the spring 2018 runway shows seemed to focus on the early 1980s, which means strong shoulders and shoulder pads, long legs, and lose pants with a hinged waist. Sneakers Chunky sneakers are being paired with every outfit from an all denim look, to a skirt with a cropped hoodie, to even an evening dress. Chunky sneakers are such a staple spring trend that you can wear them with almost anything and pull the look off. Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Balenciaga all had models strutting up and down the catwalk with wearing none other than comfortable, chunky sneakers. Sequins Sequins is making a comeback in a real way. In the spring 2018 fashion shows,

you saw top designers like Tom Ford, Marc Jacob, Gucci, Dior, and Chanel all showcasing long dresses, accessories, and shirts loaded top to bottom with colorful sequins. Pastels Nothing says spring like light and airy pastel colors. On the spring 2018 runways, pastel colors like lilac, pink, lemon, and duck egg blue ruled. The great thing about pastel colored pieces are that you can go matchy-matchy for a 90’s clueless vibe, or mix and match styles with other pastels and neutrals for a street-ready on trend outfit. Checkers Checkers, specifically heritage checkers, and plaid have been seen on the runways for almost every season in 2018 and spring is no exception. The spring 2018 runway shows had heritage checkers all over designer’s clothes including Balenciaga, Victoria Beckham, Sonia Rykiel, and Burberry. Heritage checkers can be large, small, and in any color to make your spring outfit stand out from the crowd. Plastic Plastic material was seen at Chanel, Isabel, Marant, Burberry, Topshop, Calvin Klein, and Fendi’s spring 2018 shows. The glossy finish on plastic gives finished looks a badass futuristic vibe. Spring is the perfect time to try out this trend and no color is off limits. Plastics have been seen in reds, see-through, white, neutral-striped, black, neon, and more.

Bold Matchy-Matchy Color One thing that was noticed across the board at spring 2018 runway shows was bold matchy-matchy outfits in every hue from reds, blues, yellows, and oranges. Matching your exact top color to your pants or skirts is the perfect spring look and a sure way to ensure you are fashion-savvy for an evening out. Sheer Sheer is another trend that has been seen in every season’s runway shows for 2018. Sheer is the perfect layering material. You can overlay sheer with tank tops, tee-shirts, and crop tops, or wear slinky bralettes, and cropped tank tops underneath. But sheer isn’t only for shirts, on the spring 2018 runways shows it was seen on coats, dresses, skirts, and, purses purposefully showcasing what lies beneath.

ABOUT THE EVENT

castle hill

Castle on the Hill took place on March 25, 2018 at the Henderson Castle in Kalamazoo, MI. This event was unlike any other Trend45 event because the location was in an actual castle with over 25 rooms for metro Detroit creatives to explore and shoot in. When coming into Castle Hill, you were swept away by the Henderson Castle’s stunning architecture overlooking downtown Kalamazoo and the entire Kalamazoo valley. Over 50 photographers, models, stylists, bloggers, and videographers headed into the castle for a day of creativity, networking, exploring, and letting lose with like-minded people. At a Trend45 event, creatives are free to work with whomever they want, wherever they want. The Henderson Castle was every photographer’s dream due to the dramatic sunlight beaming through haunted rooms, stained glass windows, and plenty of gorgeous outdoor location options. Every room you went in you could witness creative collaboration coming to light. From videographers shooting a video in one room, to a blogger sitting down for an interview in the next, to looking out at the historical landmark’s landscape and seeing an inspired 70’s shoot, t there was creative energy streaming through the entire castle. At 4 p.m., photographer Savi John and model Willow Henderson conducted a studio modeling class. Savi John taught the photographers in attendance how to properly use studio lighting, and Willow Henderson taught models how to pose with proper angles for body types. That is the great thing about Trend45 events, you have experienced models and photographers working with aspiring models and photographers to help each other grow in desired fields.

Don’t miss your chance at signing up for the next Trend45 event, Cabin on the Grasslands II, in Aberdeen, Ohio June 1st – June 3rd, 2018. Aside from content creation, enjoy one catered breakfast, two catered lunches, two catered dinners, plenty of vegan options, an exclusive after party, DJ Rou!ette, and over 7,500 square feet to shoot in.
